    I'm actually made friends with Chloe, Teo, Rosie, Olivia and Amanda and I also have autism too (got diagnosed when I was 11 or 12) :). I love your videos too (I've watched other autistic creators too!). Thank you for your review.

      I loved you Heather on the show so much. Reminded me of myself in so many ways. I am also autistic. Olivia really touched my heart because she helped me understand parts of me I didn't understand. I was crying watching this show because it changed my life. I wasn't diagnosed till 30 so my whole life I just struggled and felt so off. Struggled with friends and social cues. Thanks for sharing your story

    Hey there's a new autism movie that isn't terrible! It's called The Reason I Jump (I'm assuming the jumping is part of the main character's stimming) and this one is about a nonverbal boy. I saw a segment on morning TV about it and they actually brought in an autistic author to weigh in on it! If you want to do a review of it, go for it! Thank you soooooo much for this! I watched season 1 before I figured out I was autistic & felt fairly traumatized by it. Infantalization and condescension is one of my most uncomfortable things sensory-wise and looking back huge impetus for masking and not figuring this out til middle aged. I have been curious about season 2, but not wanting to go through that upset again, and it now feeling personal! Was so nice to experience it in a safe way with someone whose reaction is so in line with what I'm feeling as I'm seeing it. And yes, happy as heck that I am on spectrum and now know it!

    I find it interesting how you mentioned the lack of diverse representation because something else I noticed kind of in relation to it is that anyone who was bi or any sexuality that’s more than one gender always got paired with another gender and only when that didn’t work out got put with their same gender. To me that felt very heteronormative as they did it with everyone attracted to multiple genders

    I saw these well before my diagnosis and I was obsessed. It felt so comforting, supportive and endearing. Now I’m diagnosed it feels hard to relate to the display of these people, but I don’t find it offensive. It’s like a lactose intolerant content creator, reviewing their annual Christmas home made rockyroad. . They LOVE IT, it’s definitely genuine in intent. It’s spreading rockyroad awarness to people that’s never heard of the scrumptious homemade rockyroad, But it’s not a reliable source or rockyroad information. They don’t really know how it’s meant to taste

    I wonder if the “forced” editing is actually to give NTs a sense of how painful some of these scenarios might feel for some autistic people. Possibly being on the spectrum exacerbates all of those forced feelings.

    i’ve had a inkling that i might be autistic or neurodivergent in some way but i have a irrational/rational fear of getting a diagnosis because there are plenty of countries that have essentially demonized autism and they don’t have the same rights as other people and that could easily be implemented where i live

    I felt like the people on the show were my friends cos I didn't really have friends at school. I am a non neurotypical , empath and am HSP. I don't think I have autism but I'm definately non neuro typical. Neuro typical people think I'm very strange and sometimes I'm happy that they think that but some days, on my low days it hurts and I can't cope. 🦎🐌🦋🌻🌼⚘☘

    Okay, but what NOONE seems to be talking about is how incredibly patriarchal and predatory Michael, Kelvin, and Mark are. They seem obsessed with "getting" a girlfriend. They are goal-oriented and not at all love-oriented. And the way Mark talks about "a nice girl", etc. makes me want to puke. Autistic men shouldn't be exempt from being held accountable for their mysogyny.

    • @LifeinBonnieland
      @LifeinBonnieland 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      AND "getting" a girlfriend should NOT be called an accomplishment. It's not a box to check off or an achievement of some sort. Relationships should not be seen in that way no matter how neurodivergent or neurotypical you are.

    I'll admit I watched the whole show without ever considering the neurotypic perspective or the fact it was probably made for a neurotypical audience. For a serious critique thats extremely relevant but that point of view probably made me enjoy the show a lot more than I would have otherwise. At the same time, while its definitely not the best representation, I feel like its still better than 90% of autistic representation out there, specially since it shows REAL autistic people

    I have a family members who have autism and when it comes to the likes and dislikes I think it helps people who are not on the spectrum understand autism better. How? Because when you are around them and display or expose them to things they don’t like which causes a negative reaction some people who have never been around someone with autism can be insensitive to their reaction rather than empathize. Also i think it helps the viewer know autism doesn’t exclude that person from having similar dislikes from someone who doesn’t have autism. I can see why some will see the show the way they do but I’m grateful that this show has helped communities be inclusive to men and woman with autism. It’s a step! 🙏🏽

    I agree with everything you say here!! Its the number 1 reason that I struggle to watch it even though I love all the people on it, the editing and clear neurotypical lense just makes me immensely uncomfortable. I'm glad that they seemed to have improved somewhat, especially with representing relationships between both neurotypical and neurodiverse folks. But I don't think I'll be watching it myself for a while, it still feels a lot like it's made for neurotypical viewers looking in (Which makes me feel yuck lol) and it makes me feel especially weird that when I tell someone I'm autistic one of the first things neurotypicals suggest is that I watch the show, or have I heard of it, alongside all the other movies that show stereotyped representations of being autistic such as the good doctor. I always cringe a bit cause I'm not sure what to say other than those shows are really made more with neurotypicals in mind than autistic people as viewers.

    I haven’t watched it. I just can’t. These type of shows, that showcase us, make me feel so incredibly uncomfortable. Probably because I then get compared to whoever is on the screen by my parents. I didn’t get a diagnosis until I was 40 and I think the doctor only gave in because I refused to shut up and sit down. My journey started with Aspergirls when my life was beyond rationalising things away. Yes, people have a hard time sometimes but no one else seemed to have the struggles that I have. No one else had to end a day with a family block of Cadbury’s or on bad days, 2+ And having a so-called male professional tell me I wasn’t on the spectrum because I could talk and female was enough to make me see red. So parents if you’re watching this and dithering about sharing your child’s diagnosis with them or not telling them because labels suck, please, please, please don’t make them grow up thinking that they’re broken, useless, worthless failures. You might not want to or be ready to accept the reality but trust me when I say that your beautiful child will know they’re different and then the soul crushing shit happens. Please let them grow with their diagnosis. Let them shine and be who they are! Yes, labels suck when randomly assigned but having a name for what you’re going through makes a huge difference. It was a massive relief when I got mine at 40. I’m still trying to undo all the negative self talk and it’s not easy but at least I can now understand why things are so hard and learn to be kinder. Please tell them. I’d do anything to save precious children from growing up thinking like I did and still do.

    Chloe, I was so happy that there was a Neurotypical Lady dating an Autistic Man:)!! And Sam is a really sweet Guy, with that Lady:)!! I hope that they hit it off and fall in love:)!!! And I so agree with you on the editing to manipulate people's emotions and promoting prejudices to be really nasty. And I think Cassandra is a really sweet Lady and I like that when she was question about "not looking Autistic" she replied, "You can not see my brain":)! I also agree with you that it is very wrong to have their "dislikes" to be about sensory overload or steaming. I think it should be about things like doing you like ballet, swimming, Do you like the ocean or the mountains? Do you like the country or the city? what kind of music do you like?, what kind of books do you read?, what are your hobbies?, what are your morals and values in life?, and do you love animals?, etc. In other words, things anyone would ask anyone they are getting to know!! Chole, thank your reviews and you have taught me so much:)!! You are so awesome:)!!!

    I think most people are afraid to go on the show lol I’d be nervous and I’m typically told I don’t look autistic but I freeze whenever I’m in front of the camera. Hmm 🤔 does anybody else have this problem?

    Hi, I have only just found your channel and only just this week watched Love on the Spectrum (both seasons). Thank you for this balanced, fair and insightful review (you cram a lot of content into your video!) I totally agree with all the points you make. Season 2 is definitely an improvement on Season 1 but still uncomfortable watching at times. I really don't know what to make of the coach Jodie...the way she speaks to contestants as though they are young children REALLY winds me up and why is she hell bent on teaching NT norms to ND people, especially when the programme mostly only pairs participants with other autistic people?! Seems bizarre to me! Quite a few mentions of functioning labels which I don't agree with, but I guess if that's how an autistic person identifies or the specifics of their diagnosis (even though the diagnostic criteria has changed and diagnoses are now not functioning specific) then they will use that kind of language. Sending thanks, respect and big smiles from the UK.

    I would be an target for self- pity and being patronised in this show as an Autistic person. Cause when I'm incredibly nervous and always am in new surroundings and on camera, I stumble on words an lot of times.....
    Sometimes even in the first couple of sentences before I get going 💕 I'm also developmentally- delayed an condition overlapping with myself being Autistic

    I see where you are coming from. The fact that this dating coach is treating dating as a second language. She does the role playing type in thing. This in my eyes is Ok. I did abit with my children where one has or not. I think that it helps with the anxiety part though, it might seem robotic.
    I also think that, if they show the worst part, then when they do come up in real life we might be more understanding and less uncomfortable. 🤔

    As an autistic person I can't bring myself to watch this show because it comes across so condescending! I had a family member explain it to me and they found the show endearing, which to me immediately rang alarm bells that it infantilises autistic people.
    The use of a dating coach in this show especially doesn't sit right with me. While I've had help from my psychologist in the past to learn scripts and how to fit in to make some interactions more comfortable, I think showing this contributes to autistic masking and sends the message that we need to act neurotypical to have relationships and to fit in. It reinforces the message to neurotypical people that there's something wrong with us and that we don't have empathy- many of us do, but just show it differently. It allows them to look down on us and continue expecting us to fit in with them rather than making the effort to fit in with us.
    Many autistic people have stressful dating experiences and many of us experience abuse in relationships. If they want to include a dating coach, they could show someone educating an autistic person on what they deserve in a relationship, what healthy communication looks like (eg communicating when you need space/support, dealing with conflict), how to balance your needs while dating (eg comfortable settings, time limits etc to avoid sensory triggers & meltdown/shutdowns).

      @erinking5313 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely , there is no need for a dating coach if they are going out for a date with autistic people , they understand each other and they don't need to mask unlike being around NT people. I am not autistic , but deaf . I told this to a AUSLAN interpreter at TAFE because she had a neurodiverse son half her age , and told her about the show

    I have been working with Autistic people for years and I thought it was great and not contrived. You can't cherry pick. Dating and relationships are difficult for most people in this community. Their are so many different types. You can't speak for them simply because you have Autism. You can't cover every nuance.
    " if you met one person with Autism...you have met one person with Autism"

    • @Daz-ov7co
      @Daz-ov7co 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That fact that you use person first language shows your understanding of the autistic community. It demonstrates that working with autistic people for years doesn’t give you a basic understanding.

    • @FireinTheBowl
      @FireinTheBowl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Daz-ov7co yeah that's it. Think nothing of the fact that I've worked with dozens of people over the years with great success. Their familes love the progress I've made, but you will summarize this based on a linguistic prescription.

    • @Daz-ov7co
      @Daz-ov7co 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FireinTheBowl Would it be professional and something you are proud to stand behind, speaking to one of your autistic clients this way? Would this count as talking over or silencing an autistic voice?
      You have told the OP that she can’t speak for all autistic people and have positioned yourself as gate keeper because you have worked with autistic people. You have further supported your argument by stating the “families” are happy with the progress that you are attributing to your work. You did not centre the autistic person in that measure of your success. And you have attributed that success to your work rather than the autistic person, their family or anyone else involved.
      And you are happy to position yourself as more valid or knowledgeable than me without knowing anything about me at all. I’m another autistic voice you are comfortable to speak over as an allistic person.

    I didn't see it that way at all. It is people who happen to have autism looking for love.
    Also an opportunity to learn more about ASD as I have two young grandchildren on the spectrum.
    How about a positive attitude?
    I didn't see anyone being made fun of.
