  • Today we take a look at one incredible Isopod... The coveted and undescribed 'Cubaris' sp. Lemon Blue.
    This outstanding invertebrate is another wonderful newer discovery coming from the hidden limestone caves of Thailand.
    Isopods have taken the world by storm with all the incredible new discoveries being found seemingly weekly. From the start when the first Rubber Duckies took the isopod collectors world by storm there was no looking back and sp. Lemon Blue is no exception.
    It's gorgeous coloration, active nature and ease of culture has endeared them to collectors worldwide.
    They may not replicate as fast as other members of the genera so their value should remain higher as demand outweighs the supply chain...for now....
    So I hope you will join me today as we discuss this fascinating little invertebrate.
    Thank you kindly for watching and support my work.
    Cheers!

    All the cubaris are adorable! 😍 even common sow bugs are cute to me, though. My son and boyfriend hate that I release them back into the wild from our laundry room but I could never squish one on purpose 😰. Need to get a beetle or hermit crab or something to help my son get over his fears of anything that crawls/flies. We tried raising caterpillars/butterflies and it helped him until they started flying out of the cage and he was terrified all over again 😅. Something slow-moving maybe would be less scary

      Haven’t you learned anything yet? Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh...... not bugs... albeit bugs are really cool... perhaps more so than fish for their diversity, incredible abilities etc....
      back on track.....
      Isopods are crustaceans🦞 more like lobsters, shrimp etc... they have functional gills... taste delicious to some in Chinese food etc..... Forrest Gump even approves!
      Yes I completely forgot to mention that I got it mounted. I was terrified with all the construction of jay I would damage it. Now it reside in a place of honour in the top shelf!
      Thinking of you daily brother.
      Stay safe! Keeping on getting on!
      Hugs

      I know it's kinda irrelevant to this video but the caribena versicolor tarantulas are shockingly beautiful too! I'm always surprised to see such vivid colors in nature when so many things are neutral shades. Isopods and crustaceans have some of the most gorgeous patterns/color variations of anything in nature. Even flowers rarely appear with blue pigment, let alone neon blue 🤩

    The lemon blues and the rubber ducky’s are so cute! I want to get some but I need to do more research before I invest . They are not cheap obviously so I want to make sure I set them up correctly and they thrive

      My duckies do very well however my lemon blues somewhat died out. Im hoping they bounce back. The culture got ignored a bit too much during the construction transition and they were the hardest hit. Expensive lesson to learn!

    are these easy to breed?

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely not on the scale of say armadillidium maculatum or porcellio laevis.
      Most Cubaris are far slower to replicate and establish than the former as well somewhat more intolerant to abrupt changes in the chemistry of their substrate.
      My colony thrived but during construction on the new lair I didn’t check on them often enough and my colony crashed. I have very few individuals left but hoping to see a comeback

    Have you had any luck with them retaining their vivid coloring or did they fade to a lighter paler coloring? I've heard diet plays a role in their coloring and no one has cracked the code yet. Could you please weigh in on this? It's what's preventing me from getting lemon blues and Jupiters.

      Are your Lemon Blues ok? Cause friend has said they're very hard to keep, much more than Rubber Duckies and I wanted to ask you is that true?

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aleksandrakrolak more challenging no. My culture is as fine for a very long time. Truth be told with all the construction and farm life this spring/summer I feel the bins got a bit drier than they should’ve and this alone probably accounts for the crash. I take full responsibility.
      I was doing maintenance yesterday and only found two individuals. That’s not to say their isn’t more in the substrate

      @aleksandrakrolak 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@themadaquarist Oh they crashed?! :O I'm sorry, hope surviving individuals will be fine ;)
      I own Rubber Duckies and at first they were dying one by one, but now colony is thriving and I see many babies ;) And I've thought Cubaris = Cubaris, so Lemons gonna be the same, but my friend said otherwise, so I wanted to check if that's true.
      I mean I'm still gonna own them when I have Teh Moneyz™, just it seems I need to be prepared more ;)
      Thanks for answering, have a nice day!
