You should do research on Seneca Village. Central Park only exists as it is configured because of racist anti-Black policies that forcibly removed and stole the land from Black home owners.

Weirdly, someone else mentioned that and when I thanked them for letting me know, they deleted their comment 😥
I've pinned this here now - and for anyone who's interested, here's Central Park's own minisite about the history of Seneca Village.

This was so refreshing compared to all those other luxury apt hunt videos! My situation is very similar and also currently looking for the same kind of apt at that price. Never considered Sunset Park, but will definitely look now - thank you for sharing!

I love that neighborhood so much! In the summer, at industry city, they have a lot of good indie bands that play shows there. You found your place, I’m wondering why you didn’t check the other side of Central Park? The upper west side extends a bit further north, you can find some pretty good deals in the low 100s below 110th. Not quite as dicey as east Harlem, Columbia‘s directly north of it so get a lot of the younger crowd and it’s a bit more patroled

From what I remember, in general nothing showed up for the bedrooms + price point I was looking for! My guess is that that area's best time period to look for things is somewhere around August/September, a window I missed.

@@prestonradtke222 I missed the commotion by about 30 minutes! My neighbor wasn't so lucky and was in one of the carriages affected by the smoke bomb. She showed me the videos she filmed of it - looked super scary! It's a miracle nobody died.

The Upper Eastside goes up to 96th street, after that it’s a neighborhood called East or Spanish Harlem!

I owned a four family house in Sunset Park decades ago (41st and 7th). To let you know how long ago, my tenants rent for a two bedroom was $180 a month. Yes, that was before greed took over NYC. 40 plus years ago. Sunset Park was where I took my kids to enjoy. Back then, it was strictly a family area. No singles. I grew up near Prospect Park.

Totally with you there. I have a very good career and am in the top maybe >95%ile of income and I still would never pay for these ridiculous apartments, I'm only willing to pay under 2k$. These kids today must be influencers or their parents have a lot of money.

Do you had issues and was afraid of Flatbush area because you googled 1 incident that happened in the area yet you end up in the area that the crazy man shoot up the subway train recently 😮. Lesson learned. No where in NY is safe so don’t assume you will be better off or safe in an area where there are people who look just like you.
I live in Brooklyn overlooking Prospect Park. Doormen building. One of the most beautiful views. I can see the Empire State Building too.
There are some nice elevator buildings in my area rent stabilized.

Well, it wasn't a Sunset Park resident (he came in from Philly), and then the community got together in the park afterwards to reset in solidarity, reaffirm the love for the neighborhood and commit to continuing to protest the misuse of the police budget. It was actually quite a nice bonding moment.
Also nobody died. Meanwhile, there have been 6 murders in Flatbush this year so far.
But to your point, yes, you're not 100% safe anywhere. I've traveled all over the world, but the only place I've ever been in the middle of a terrorist incident in was in London.

There are people your age and older in NY paying that as well in nice building in Manhattan. One of my client rent is $175 and he lived in the Village. Another person I know is paying $600 upper east side. They’ve live there all their life.

Is that true? Seems incredibly cheap for Austin unless it’s some kind of subsidized housing. Austin is a very trendy city with a huge music and restaurant scene where a lot of people want to live. I saw a House Hunters show where people were looking to buy homes there and they were all around $600,000.
