I've always thought of moving here but have no idea about literally anything. I've visited once and it was amazing and I got maybe 4 things done on a list of like 50 things i wanted to see but it just seems so scary and impossible strictly money wise?? i've always wanted to be a fashion designer but refuse to go into debt for school and found out CUNY has a fashion design program and have no idea how i'd juggle making money and school at the same time..

i knew at age 5 i would be moving here. it was 1980 and there is a really funny story about it. i finally started visiting regularly in 1996, and came for a long weekend in Aug 1998, only to decide that i would rather eat glass than return to my hometown of Miami. Just shy of a quarter century here and still am in active love with NYC, having lived in Washington Heights (my #1 nabe) 19:04 , Hell’s kitchen, Chelsea, Williamsburg, Crown Heights and now Ditmas Park(my #2 fave) and very very briefly in Kew Gardens i have a decent grasp of transit and lifestyle-Maybe Maya would want to do a collab sometime lol! I’d love to add my experience to her voice and help someone else on this journey called NYC.
This town will kick you just to see if you will kick her back. Those who do-stay forever. Best of luck!

Having independently moved to everywhere from Tokyo to a small town in the Arabian (Persian) Gulf, I think the last 5 minutes of this video are the most valuable advice anyone can get about moving anywhere. Forget the references to New York. It doesn't matter whether or not you dreamed of living there, whether you wanted an adventure or whether you were forced to go because it was the only place you could find a job. It's all about your attitude to the place. I love: "If you choose to handle it, that means you are choosing [wherever] . . . and, if you actively choose to love this place, you will." Great message, Maya.

You nailed this video. I grew up in Queens and lived in Manhattan 1979-1989 and everything you said was absolutely true then (I had a blast). Whatever attitude you have NY will hurl it back 10 times more. Bad attitude, you'll get 10 times worse experience. Great attitude you'll get 10 times better then you can imagine. Also, as a 64-year old guy, I advise move to NY when you're young. Don't wait do it asap. It's just easier young and you'll put up with stuff that you won't want to do when you're older (like climbing stairs all day and living with roommates). NY is a lot of work to live in but you learn so much that will serve well wherever you go after. It's its own education that can't be bought any other way. I live in LA and love it (I'm so relaxed now!). People ask me if I miss NY. I don't miss NY but I do miss New Yorkers. Bonus tip: live near a subway station.

We are all lonely , but if you need friends to live .. then you don’t really like yourself … and that’s a problem …. Be happy with yourself first.
And NYC isn’t trying to break you , that’s called being young and growing up. You can be miserable anywhere … you can be broke anywhere … but you don’t have to be any of those things if you plan ahead. Save your money before you move. Make friends before you move on visits.

Also, if you are planning on signing a lease with roommates or on your own, many landlords require your annual income to be 40X the monthly rent to get approved. If you don't meet the income requirements you'll need a guarantor that does meet a different set of requirements. Always do a reverse image search if you are looking for apartments online. There are many scams that use photos and videos of legitimate places but are just using info from real listings to take your money.

The world needs more people like you, who can just look you in the eye and speak the truth. Most people would rather convince the world they’re happy all the time maybe to convince themselves they aren’t lonely or depressed sometimes. I might emphasize regarding living options- UPTOWN. Much more affordable than mid and down. A lot of flavor. Definitely deserves a walk-through to see the areas that you might desire. Neighborhoods in NYC Outside of Midtown and downtown can change block to block but the payoff can be great in terms of savings. All the conveniences of subway transportation are also available in these areas. You’d love these areas if you want something with a local feel. New York City is changing rapidly. Don’t be afraid of the Bronx! Same rules for uptown apply. 20 plus years in the city. Amazing city!

Maya-thank you for doing these wonderful videos! after 24 years in this town, i can honestly say you have the most candid take and realistic approach i have ever seen! I’m sure you’ve helped so many people in their transition from “new” to “native” and don’t even probably have a clue as to the difference you make! New Yorkers are actually nice and well mannered for the most part, we are just in a HURRY.
    Keep up the great work!

You literally couldn’t pay me to leave Southern California so idk why I watch these videos about New York lmao, but I’m glad I watched this one! Your last two tips are exactly what I tell people about living in Cali. So many people move here (specifically to LA) thinking it’ll immediately be this fantasy life that they see in movies and when it’s not that they begin to resent all of California. It’s really hard to explain to people why we pay so much for gas and food and rent but once you realize what this place ACTUALLY is, what it has to offer, and actively choose to make this your life regardless of the bad days, it’s literally like no other place in the world. I always end up just telling people
“I’m sure it’s like the hold that New York has over people, it’s probably hard for them to quantify exactly why they love it there and will never leave, but I just know they must love it the way I love Cali for them to endure what they do”
This video confirmed my theory 🤙🏾

This is right. Before the 2008 collapse I would fly back and forth to NY from LA. Stay in Manhattan/East Village. I had a group of friends in the Lower East Side that gave me a bunch of advice too. The NY coat, long, wool (with pockets in front for keys, phone, subway card). Get a scarf to keep wind out. You are going to walk a lot as well.

Lmao as someone from Nyc I died when u said they’ll be a bad day. This is so true and not exaggerated at all. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong. I remember in January this year I was on my way to Brooklyn to get a haircut and it was sunny and 45 degrees when I left my house so I decided to go in a sweater. As soon as I get off the train it started raining and the weather had dropped to 35 degrees. I had to take the bus in Brooklyn and the bus didn’t show up for 45 minutes. Once I finally get to my barber he wasn’t even there, the dude was feeling sick and had to leave early. So I decided to go to a different barber shop in bk. The crazy didn’t stop there. I missed the bus that goes there by 5 seconds and the next one didn’t come for a half hour. It’s now 7pm and the weather had dropped to 25 but felt like 10. I was literally shaking so much. The bus finally comes. I had to take it to the last stop which is about 25 minutes but nope the bus I was on decided to get everyone off the bus bc it was the last stop somewhere else. So I had to get off the bus again and wait for the next one. At this point I told myself yep it’s one of those days. I was freezing 🥶. The next bus didn’t take long to come, it came in about 10 minutes. After that everything went fine, I got my haircut headed back home and went under my blanket. But the worst of it came the day after when I had gotten a fever prob from being out in just a sweater and to top it off I tested positive the morning after that with Covid. I was in bed with chills and fever for one week. All because of that one shitty day. But yea I wrote this out for anyone who’s interested in what a bad nyc day looks like. And yes she’s right, u gotta love living here Even through all the BS if your gonna make it here. I love it

Your last tip is quite possibly the most important. That lens you described is something people need to be wary of. If you are moving to NY only because of how fun it seem in movies/shows, then you are moving there for the wrong reason.

LOL...I paid only $90 dollars a month for a one bedroom , one bath, large eat in kitchen , living room apt on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the early 1970s when I was single and working as a fashion illustrator, and that was rent controlled, an old brownstone! With two roomates that was $30 dollars each! Then I rented a brand new studio apt. when I moved to the suburbs, with AC, a full walk in closet, huge linen closet, galley kitchen, one bath with tub along with swimming pool/tennis courts for just $162 a month! That same apt on the Upper East Side, now renovated goes for $2500 - 3000 a month for one person! Used to pay just 10 dollars a month for food and next to nothing for utilities! Subway fare was 35 cents a ride, movies were $1.25, a drink at a single's bar was around 2 -3 dollars! A bounced check was just $3.00!! What are the skyrocketed prices today! And we thought inflation was bad in the 1970s?? HA!! I wouldn't pay any of the exhorbitant prices today that have gone through the stratosphere since then, just shows you just how GREEDY people have gotten these days and everything keeps on going up and up..the landlords, real estate, property taxes, home insurance, the greedy banks with their outlandish fees!

The no good very bad day thing must be real. I'm moving later this summer, and a friend I know who lives in NY for school literally described just that. They were so excited and everything went wrong... like its actually very sad and nothing i wish on anyone. But, they stayed and chose to endure it despite their depression and lack of motivation for months after. I'm truly horrified of this..., but willing to take on the challenge because my mind is made up.

Alot of new yorkers live in jersey. If you mean that someone who is from new york moved to new jersey then thats fair. Living a "10 min" train ride away does not make you a new yorker though. Nj is a different state. Ppl also commute from other states to work here as well. That doesnt make them new yorkers either. Having a new york address makes you a new yorker.
