      I've always thought of moving here but have no idea about literally anything. I've visited once and it was amazing and I got maybe 4 things done on a list of like 50 things i wanted to see but it just seems so scary and impossible strictly money wise?? i've always wanted to be a fashion designer but refuse to go into debt for school and found out CUNY has a fashion design program and have no idea how i'd juggle making money and school at the same time..

      i knew at age 5 i would be moving here. it was 1980 and there is a really funny story about it. i finally started visiting regularly in 1996, and came for a long weekend in Aug 1998, only to decide that i would rather eat glass than return to my hometown of Miami. Just shy of a quarter century here and still am in active love with NYC, having lived in Washington Heights (my #1 nabe) 19:04 , Hell’s kitchen, Chelsea, Williamsburg, Crown Heights and now Ditmas Park(my #2 fave) and very very briefly in Kew Gardens i have a decent grasp of transit and lifestyle-Maybe Maya would want to do a collab sometime lol! I’d love to add my experience to her voice and help someone else on this journey called NYC.
      This town will kick you just to see if you will kick her back. Those who do-stay forever. Best of luck!

    You nailed this video. I grew up in Queens and lived in Manhattan 1979-1989 and everything you said was absolutely true then (I had a blast). Whatever attitude you have NY will hurl it back 10 times more. Bad attitude, you'll get 10 times worse experience. Great attitude you'll get 10 times better then you can imagine. Also, as a 64-year old guy, I advise move to NY when you're young. Don't wait do it asap. It's just easier young and you'll put up with stuff that you won't want to do when you're older (like climbing stairs all day and living with roommates). NY is a lot of work to live in but you learn so much that will serve well wherever you go after. It's its own education that can't be bought any other way. I live in LA and love it (I'm so relaxed now!). People ask me if I miss NY. I don't miss NY but I do miss New Yorkers. Bonus tip: live near a subway station.

    Having independently moved to everywhere from Tokyo to a small town in the Arabian (Persian) Gulf, I think the last 5 minutes of this video are the most valuable advice anyone can get about moving anywhere. Forget the references to New York. It doesn't matter whether or not you dreamed of living there, whether you wanted an adventure or whether you were forced to go because it was the only place you could find a job. It's all about your attitude to the place. I love: "If you choose to handle it, that means you are choosing [wherever] . . . and, if you actively choose to love this place, you will." Great message, Maya.

    The subway was actually the easiest thing for my to figure out while visiting. I got used to Tokyo and Seoul subways, so figuring out the NYC subway was relatively easy. I remember years ago when my son's co-workers, when they went to NYC for a hair show, shopped for stylish raincoats only to see everyone wearing large trash bags for raincoats. 🤣🤣🤣

    Also, if you are planning on signing a lease with roommates or on your own, many landlords require your annual income to be 40X the monthly rent to get approved. If you don't meet the income requirements you'll need a guarantor that does meet a different set of requirements. Always do a reverse image search if you are looking for apartments online. There are many scams that use photos and videos of legitimate places but are just using info from real listings to take your money.

The world needs more people like you, who can just look you in the eye and speak the truth. Most people would rather convince the world they’re happy all the time maybe to convince themselves they aren’t lonely or depressed sometimes. She says that there are rats everywhere, there will be homeless people EVERYWHERE. And that “it smells” but I have been to Manhattan (specifically only Manhattan, which is why thats where I wanna live) every year since I was 3 and I find the city absolutely Beautiful! I moved to Chicago 5 months ago from Raleigh Nc and grew up in rural NC. Its so different here and I live alone. I enjoy my job and coworkers but haven’t really gotten involved in much else yet, especially moving here in winter and snow. Its been extremely lonely and I’ve found myself just shutting down more. Your section on how lonely it can be made me feel seen and have more hope that I’ll make friends and have a social network at some point.

  • @L0kias1
    @L0kias1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    We are all lonely , but if you need friends to live .. then you don’t really like yourself … and that’s a problem …. Be happy with yourself first.
    And NYC isn’t trying to break you , that’s called being young and growing up. You can be miserable anywhere … you can be broke anywhere … but you don’t have to be any of those things if you plan ahead. Save your money before you move. Make friends before you move on visits.
    A man with a plan is never confused

    Maya-thank you for doing these wonderful videos! after 24 years in this town, i can honestly say you have the most candid take and realistic approach i have ever seen! I’m sure you’ve helped so many people in their transition from “new” to “native” and don’t even probably have a clue as to the difference you make! New Yorkers are actually nice and well mannered for the most part, we are just in a HURRY.
    Keep up the great work!

    This is right. Before the 2008 collapse I would fly back and forth to NY from LA. Stay in Manhattan/East Village. I had a group of friends in the Lower East Side that gave me a bunch of advice too. The NY coat, long, wool (with pockets in front for keys, phone, subway card). Get a scarf to keep wind out. You are going to walk a lot as well.

    I've decided to move to NYC. When you think of a place, the videos on TH-cam just start popping up. To the list of your maps add" Here maps" they are also good. They actually work offline. Thank you for the video.

    I'm planning on moving there next year when hopefully covid is over (enough)😖 I was planning on moving this year but I was so worried about not being able to find a job when the pandemic hit so I'm in my same city. I've been saving for over 2 years now and have more than enough but for me the scary part is the actual moving process and being able to find a job 😬 From watching a lot of these types of videos it seems like loneliness is one of the biggest things you have to deal with as well as not having a car for errands (if you're used to that). I really like how you don't sugar coat this though 😄

    Moved from California to Manhattan NY in 2004. I've been here 17 years now. It was very difficult for me since LA and NY are complete opposite. I enjoy Soho, Lower Eastside, and Chelsea.
