  • I picked up a used Kobalt 40v cordless chainsaw from ebay because I have other 40v tools, but this one is no longer in production & tested it out cleaning up a tree top from my previous video. Don't forget to subscribe and join us on Facebook, too / flatcreekoutdoors

I have (2) Kobalt 80-volt 18" Bar Chainsaws and use (2) 5 AH Batteries. I’m 79 and love NO more having to pull a cord to start a gas-powered chainsaw. My first 80-volt 18" Bar Chain saw with a 5-AH Battery and charger was $400 in Jul 2021. it is still being sold on the Lowes website as of 5/26/2024 - I use them on our Southeast LA farm of 18 acres of tall large pine trees that were devastated by a Hurricane and tornado. On 10 acres of the property, nearly all the trees are down or dead. My chainsaws have been working great and cutting huge logs and trees and logs up to 20"+ and it works great. I also use the 80-volt 10” Pole saw, lawnmower, and Leaf Blower.

We have the KCS-4040 and Love It. This little monster is a powerhouse.
Things to remember: Never Push on the saw like you would do a power saw. Let the machine do the cutting. Also keep in mind that the saw has just an ON/OFF trigger. You can't change to different speeds. If it doesn't come with a battery, buy the 4.0ah at a minimum. If you don't know what you are doing and Push To Hard, the battery will overheat and shutdown while it cools off.
Great Saw...We have no complaints at all.

Funny thing is that the batteries are usually more expensive alone than the kit.
I bought the pole saw and got an extra 4 amp 40 volt battery when I bought the 480 cfm blower kit, for $64.00 on clearance.
Now I noticed they have the chainsaw on clearance at $116.00, so I'm debating whether i need another saw.
I have a couple nice Stihl chainsaws and the small Dewalt 20v max.

I have the Dewalt 20v XR with a 12" bar. It works great for limbing and small trees. I've felled trees up to 10" with it and it worked great. The batteries do overheat in the summer so having 3 or 4 spare 6ah batteries on hand is a good idea. Nice video, thanks for sharing.

thanks for the recommendation. I've seen on CPO outlet and ebay the 20v saws aren't too expensive, but I'm wondering if stepping up to the 60v wouldn't give you a much more capable saw.

    • @PaleHorseOutdoors
      @PaleHorseOutdoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@FlatCreekOutdoors Yes the 60v is likely more capable. It wasn't as available when I was buying all the 20v tools though. I was also going for the lowest weight due to back and joint pain.

I think this will be perfect for what I need. Small trees and limbs. My husband won't let me use a gas powered one, which I appreciate cause they're too heavy for me to handle, and a little scary honestly. This one I'm very comfortable with .

I was pretty down on the battery chainsaws for a long time but i used one at Jeff's last year and tbh it was perfect for quick limb cuts, or landscape stuff. Good portability and easy starting. Sooo i got one too. Definitely good for what it's made for. If i were to get another I might get a battery pole saw. Less portable, but does everything the handheld does plus high limbs. Cheers.

A couple months ago i bought a kobalt 14 inch 40 v chainsaw with a battery and charger for about $100. The battery is under the handle. The battery doesn't last long. Lucky i have access to two 40v batteries.
I had to cut a long oak branch that fell and was leaning on a dog kennel,a sycamore (second growth) which fell right by a shed and went over a fence, and a holly that was partially uprooted and leaning against a shed and toward a fence. Overall i think it did well.
I still have to work on the sycamore because its still going against the shed so i can't go around it and its close to the neighbors wooden fence. It went over the fence that divides the yard im working in.
I don't have much time to work on it at all. So when i have time i work to cut it down

Great video. I got the dewalt 60v and I think it solves all of the complaints you had with your Kobalt. I use mine for the same thing pretty much. I even cut down a 30" oak the other day and limbed it up all on one battery. I had to pull the gas saw out for bucking the firewood though. Great saw to toss in the SXS for random jobs.

So far for me this saw works for my purposes..I purchased to produce firewood for occasional weekends in the fall and winter. Recently a sawed enough locust and oak to get me through a bitter cold 3 day holiday weekend with almost one battery 40v charge..My drafts were wide open the entire time as the temperature did not rise above single digits. My nephew (who heats the entire winter using his gas stihl saw) was impressed with the cutting/power the kobalt has. However not very suitable if you plan to saw several pickup loads in one cutting. Otherwise you'll need at least 4 or 5 batteries which arent cheap ( a few dollars and change below $200). Keep in mind theres the cheaper 40v 2ah (about $100) vs the 40v 4ah version ($170) the saw kit comes packaged with. The 2ah will deplete very quickly and is only suitable for the kobalt hedge trimmer

You're used to a gas one.. on this 40v you need to not push as hard and let the thing cut without a lot of downward force if you want the best results. Project Farm channel proved this recently with some electric saws.
