I like moments like this where the protagonist is given time to think over a life changing decision, it shows that they take the matter seriously. Nowadays in movies the protagonist instantly makes the decision without thinking about it.

I watched it again this week. It holds up perfectly. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have crazy chemistry, the jokes are still fun, the CGI looks decent. Great movie

I love when K got asked "Is it worth it?" He immediately answered "it's worth it" probably because of what he's done as an MIB, but then followed up after a brief pause "if you're strong enough" because he throught about it from J's perspective and knew for a newbie it would be difficult to adjust.
He knew it was worth it because he has been a part of MiB for decades. He knew how much it takes from you because he gave up those decades being with his wife for the sake of keeping humanity safe from hostile aliens.
I love how much more subdued this film is than the others. The sequels get really over the top, but this one actually makes the MIB feel real.

Dude, I remember seeing MIB 2 when I was 12 in theaters and I couldn't understand why it was so goofy lol. I didn't even realize the original was a comedy! It was all so subtle.

Funny enough, I think that’s ACTUALLY WHY I was a bit disappointed in this movie as a kid after being SUPER HYPED to see it (cuz I was too young and dumb to appreciate things like dialogue and character-building and just wanted to see aliens get blasted) but GREW TO APPRECIATE IT A LOT MORE as I got older.
I think A LOT OF THAT had to do with me seeing this AFTER Independence Day and Starship Troopers (which are much more PURE sci-fi action schlock).
I love the scene at 4:00 where he’s just thinking for hours about the proposition to that music with the nyc backdrop. Lotta movies these days just skip the smaller yet highly important beats like these. Brings realism and atmosphere to your story rather than just rushing the plot along with nonstop exposition from characters

Facts. Movies nowadays always have rushed convo’s that are just trying to get to the next scene especially if it’s an action movie. Small details like this where it keeps the movie from feeling being rushed are rare now.

It's one of the scenes that I remember well in this movie. It shows us the last moments of Jay being a civilian, thinking hard on the biggest decision of his life.

K's quote about a person vs people really is one of the most important lessons of all time. It's not just a good sounding quote, it's one of the most useful thought processes to keep in mind at all times if you're dealing with either 1 person or multiple people in any given circumstance.
I remember George Carlin saying something similar, how he loves individuals but despises groups of people.

I think it also had to do with the presumption that many cab drivers in 90s New York were immigrants, so making the further guess that they are even more alien would be what the average person would think if they knew aliens were on Earth.

I personally just like this first one as a stand-alone film anyway.
When all they left the guns in the table, J is the only one that double checks the safety is on. Also, K never mentioned that he was the lost kid that offered the alien the flowers, but J recognized him immediately.

the movie wasn't bad tho, he didn't actually "carried" it just make it overall much better and enjoyable than it already was

All good points but i'm hard pressed to think of another actor of the time that could have made this movie's humor work, Jones' unique brand of deadpan delivery is perfect for the dry humor and the parts where a little somberness/seriousness is required, he was the ideal actor for the role. So yes, a film is always a team effort but TLJ is the anchor that keeps this movie from becoming slapstick and elevates it to something "legitimate" and with a lil more depth than expected, whereas other (maybe none) actors may not have been able to pull this off

You can talk to a person 1 on 1 and they can understand and try and listen and follow what you are saying, but when you try to talk to a group they are more likely to not listen and give into a mob mentality. So if 1 dumb person starts to panic or make a scene a few more people are likely to and when a lot of people are panicking, everyone will panic. So a singular person can be smart, but a group of people is as dumb as the dumbest person in the group.
As for the second part for applying it in buisness, he was saying if you follow the group it's only going to end bad or little success, whereas if you do your own thing you either are going to have no success or have great success. Like if a group of buisnessmen open fast food in an area of town, following In Their footsteps will either lead you to fail if everyone else fails, or only moderate success because everyone else has a fast food place.
Now if you opened an actual restaurant instead of fast food, you still have the possibility to fail, but if you succeed you are much more likely to succeed greatly. Either way you have a chance of failure, but doing your own thing and going your own way you are more likely to find great success

@Reality Temple not to spoil the experience, but MIB3 added that Jay’s father died in a heroic operation that saved the planet…of course, no one could ever know because it’s MIB. But K did. And K promised to look after Jay, somehow and someway. He succeeded.
yes but he sacrifices his future, which is why his partners never lasted in MiB2, they wanted a normal life. K sacrificed love twice. As a teen when he was on his way to a date only to encounter an alien and any future with Agent O. In the animated series I remember Ks father being introduced wondering what happened to his son.

The ancient Greeks figured out the Earth was round in the 5th century BC (about 2,500 years ago). The idea that it was widely believed that the Earth was flat not that long ago is a total myth.

It was more like the other way around, it could be said that the average person 1500 years ago thought the earth was flat because it was the dark middle ages and all that. And 500 years ago makes sense for the whole debate between Galileo and the church about the earth or the sun being in the center of the cosmos. So I think some writer mixed the two up somewhere, or Tommy lee jones messed up in the scene but that’s very unlikely

It’s a beautiful scene especially with what came before it.
And I love they show J really thinking about it. Cutting ties with everyone you’ve ever known and stepping across that threshold is terrifying. Not knowing what’s beyond that dark first step and not having a way back.
I’m honestly surprised the MIB have so many members with the kind of sacrifice they have to make
It sounds kinda intriguing…,..sometimes certain people just become so outcasted that it really doesn’t matter to get close to anyone anymore…..and believe it or not these people can still care from a distance even if that means never getting close to anyone ever again. The outcasted child doesn’t always burn down the village. Sometimes the outcasted child continues to love even if it’s not reciprocated. It’s similar to how the Jedi order worked in Star Wars. Jedi weren’t allowed to date or get too attached to anyone. It was always about balance. Everyone’s balance is different. Certain people can do just fine alone. Humans may in fact be social beings but one doesn’t necessarily have to get close to others to be social. I’m not saying J was outcasted but I am saying that people can and have cut ties with everyone they knew before and it’s not always so obvious why but at the end of the day we’re all just individuals with our own choices and preferences.
Imagine being in his position: probably losing your mum and dad, best friends, siblings, nieces and nephews, grandparents etc.
Such incredible writing having him sit there in silence for so long.
The thing is, it's difficult to imagine his position because we don't know if he has any of those. Because his social life is blank, it's easy to assume perhaps he gave up very little socially. He doesn't appear to have anything to miss after he joins.

Not to mention, the MIB would have likely tracked down any and all friends and family he had and neural used them, ensuring none of them would have any memory of his existence.
@@ShawndaPrawn Eh, not necessarily. We see with K's family (his wife) they just make up a cover story that he went into a coma, not erasing all memory of his existence. They show it in a newspaper at the end of the movie that he "came out of a 35 year coma" and they show a picture with him back with his wife, after he retires and J neuralizes his memories of working at MiB.

This is some of the best dialogue in any movie ever. It's so much deeper and more important than just lines in a movie script.
I love this scene for an entirely different reason: this was New York at its peak. Late 90s, economy doing well, crime down, subways working, before it was turned into a tax shelter for despots, and the original WTC stood still. It was the best time to be in New York.

Fun fact. The aliens in this scene are speaking huttese the same fictional language spoken by Jabba the Hutt and the rest of the Hutts from Star Wars.
Big thanks to Spielberg to brokering the making of this movie. Truly a lightning in a bottle.
It's the little details that make this scene. Like the fact all the military guys just lay their guns down, yes with trigger discipline and not sweeping anybody, but still with the kind of carelessness caused by too much familiarity. Meanwhile at 0:19 J checks that his is empty before putting it on the table. Just that extra hint that beneath the attitude and act is a highly conscientious and intelligent man.

@@Angaraman Which would be great if those were something that _had_ a safety lever on them. But those are Sig Sauer P225's, and they don't have a safety to check. It _does_ have a decocker lever, though (note the exposed hammer on the back). Using that would render the gun safe-ish, but not really safe. It's a double action, so there's that extra pull on the trigger for the first shot, but...that wouldn't stop it from being fired at all.

I never fully grokked the "a person is smart, people are dumb panicky dangerous animals" line until COVID started.
Like, yeah, I recognized some truth to it when I rewatched this movie as a teenager, but it wasn't until 2 years ago that I actually understood it.
I doubt that this movie's writers imagined that line being used as a justification for science and vaccine denial, but here we fucking are.

When I was a kid I thought K was being serious about people knowing the earth was the center of the universe and flat bit. Mainly because I saw the word "knew" as absolute. I'm glad I can appreciate the depth of what he meant now as an adult and that what we think we know isn't the full picture.

Well considering that they passed him even though he shot the kid, when I was young it made sense but these days I know that he should have failed and the others should have passed.
Technically humans figured out the earth was round first, figuring out that the earth wasn't the center of the universe was far more recent. Well, some people knew, but the Roman inquisition threatened to torture Galileo for spreading the "heretical idea" that Earth wasn't the center of the universe in the 17th century- less than 500 years ago.

A couple of things these scenes do well: 1. When K is explaining to J what MIB is K picks up on Js skepticism/sarcasm when he says” aww you brought that tall man some flowers”. He proceeds to then reinforce what he’s telling J by showing him the creatures in the coffee room to show J it’s real instead of just pictures in a folder. 2. He uses the chronological events of earth being the center of the universe, the earth being, flat and “15 minutes ago you knew humans were alone on this planet”. 3. He confirms Js knowledge of how a person is smart but a group of people are stupid and panicky. 4. “Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow” is a tactical line used to spark Js curiosity. Finally, #5, he instigates Js ego by telling him it’s worth it only “if you’re strong enough”, challenging Js competitive nature and giving him an itch to prove that he is indeed strong enough. Very strong scenes.
Tommy Lee Jones really added to this movie. What a titan of acting
I think it may have made Will Smith’s job as an actor a bit easier. His best work can be found in films when he is not the leading man. MIB and Independence Day.

Six Degrees of Separation came out a few years earlier; he later mentioned that the work he put into that role wasn't something he wanted to do again in his career (still a pretty good movie).

@@Gameflyer001 I agree with you. I was disappointed in his performance in “Enemy of the State” opposite Gene Hackman. I think he was miscast as his acting abilities were not up to snuff. The same with “I Robot.” I could literally feel him struggle with the fact he had to carry the film as the leading man. He had no backup.

Made it sound kind of bleak with the 'severing all ties' bit, but he still made friends. In 15 years K had the picture of a pug sitting over his bed. Anybody visiting would think he was just being reminiscent over a pet, when in reality that pug was one of his closest friends that he had long conversations with.
It is so worth it.

the 1st MIB was more than just comedy in a sci-fi setting. It had some really make you think moments. The 2nd one had some of those but substituted to much with shallow Johny Knoxville and the girl villain comedy/bad dialogue .
Most of what you think you know is imagined, either by you, or by someone else and it is taught to you.

An individual will accept things better than if you put that same person in a group and they will be swayed by the pack mentality more often than for fear of being an outcast and afraid to think for themselves. Men in black is the kind of hollywood blockbuster that you don't get anymore- one that's tight , smart , visually stylish and perfectly self contained (the ending in MIB wasn't sequel bait- it was just a fun send off for the characters ). Men in black is only 1 hour and 37 minutes , but it does more, says more and entertains more than most modern marvel movies do in 2 and a half hours.
Also, the way that the alien yells "Oh shit " after spilling his coffee , always makes me laugh 🤣.
Would be nice to have a few more 90 minute movies more often. Do feel as if Hollywood is deliberately trying to pad out their stuff with filler just to reach 2 hour run times.
@@rmj8905 Most definitely! As a result, a lot of these movies , will have scenes , action sequences and jokes that just go on and on .Big action movies and comedies under an hour 1 hour and 50 minutes (including credits) need to be standard again.
