Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Rookies like me need info like this. I'm excited to go to my first Con!! The idea for folding the box after it is signed it pure genius! You guys 🪨!!
Great video! Thank you for the breakdown of pens. We recently went to Dallas Fan Expo and got 3 signatures. We ended up taking just our Funko pop boxes, folded them almost exactly like you demonstrated, except we tucked in the bottom tabs and folded under the large bottom tab. They fit beautifully into an 11 x 18 inch top loader. We've sent pops off to be signed using cardboard. The top loaders fit more easily into a backpack, which was amazing during the convention. Thanks again for the great content! We hunt together!
This is really fascinating, and really informative. I honestly wouldn't have thought about the drying time, and that's obviously important in terms of smearing. This is great info! It's also important that you emphasize the two criteria that are important; how long it takes to dry, and how it looks. I would also care very much about how it looks. And as a klutz, the drying time really matters to me. The advice about putting the collapsed boxes in a sturdy cardboard is brilliant! I've seen people do it with artist's prints, but would not have thought of doing it with the Pop boxes! Great idea! This is an incredibly useful video. I hope everyone who goes to cons and gets autographs watches it! Thank you, this is really interesting, and I really enjoyed it!!
Hey, thank you! We actually did an extension of this video if you'd like to check it out for some more tips. th-cam.com/video/CNDm78Hei-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IR16lrSkQK-G3EEw Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Where was this video before I went to my first Con and got pops signed, LOL. Everything you tested was my biggest fears so I did my own trial. I actually cut up pop protectors into little pieces and signed them with every color paint pen I had. Then I held each piece up to the front window of the pops I was getting signed to see which color contrasted the best. Best part is I didn't have to clean the protector and I actually saved the pieces for future signature decisions. Either way, I loved the video as it provided a lot of information that would have been useful to me and will be for new signature seekers. Love the content. Keep it up.
id strongly encourage you guys to try out deco colors oil-based paint pens. they are what I mainly use alongside sharpie and have been fantastic for me.
Yes we have those currently and plan on re-doing this video. Thank you for the suggestion! Amazon let us down upon ordering them, we DID search oil based and it wasn't until we opened them for this video did we realize they were acrylic! 🤣
Omg the smear test was amazing I tested it on the pens I brought and honestly those 10-30seconds makes a big difference I know which pen I’ll be taking to my con now thank you !
You're very welcome! We have a newer video with more tips, specific to cons, if you wanna check it out. We think it is very helpful! th-cam.com/video/CNDm78Hei-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bsTuIHfVcaN0JMDo
Thank you! We do the same. We made an updated video recently that's a bit more organized and highlights some tips as well: th-cam.com/video/CNDm78Hei-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=r_gCsZ8_8kslVBQC
This is an awesome video! I just started getting into having my pops signed after collecting for years. This is an amazing video for a newbie like me. Thank you! 🙏🏻
I went to have my first Pop signed back in December (my 1300-piece Thirteenth Doctor), and had Jodie Whittaker sign it with a yellow Painters brand paint pen I bought at Walmart. I tested the hell out of it way before going to the con, signing different things on old Pop boxes. When it came time to go, I primed it a good amount of time beforehand to make sure it was still wet, but wouldn't leave the tip flooded with paint. It turned out great! All in all, I think just testing out the pen you decide to go with is all you need to do. I can't imagine just buying something like that blind and handing it to the celeb without making sure it's going to work right.
Omg we hope you have the best time! I wanted to share another video we created after this one that's filled with more tips: th-cam.com/video/CNDm78Hei-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bEQNaKJZFpH6q5Go I hope it helps and hope you have a blast!
Very appreciate this episode.... gives great information for Me to move forward in starting to customize Pop Side Windows. The multi-paks seem to be on the pricey side. One point would have been nice to go ove is who sells the best colour offerings.
Thank you very much for the feedback and we are glad you enjoyed this and found it helpful! We considered doing a price comparison as well as color comparison, but honestly that would be so hard to do since these are sold in so many places- for example, the Sharpie pack we most prefer that we purchased in store was not available on Amazon. I hope this helps! 😊
I would like to also point out for those that don't know when you use the sharpie marker again weeks or months again the repriming of the marker takes a much longer time for the paint to have good consistency.
I got a POSCA signed Funkopop and after a month of having it in a case it already began flaking after I had to evacuate due to a hurricane and I put it in my bag WITH THE CASE. That was the only signed funkopop that got damaged, I brought 5 others who were all signed by Guest pens (Sharpie Paint pens). I'm personally not a fan how easy Posca's are to scratch off, plus you can get a whole lot more Sharpie Paint pens for the cost of a pack of Poscas, will definitely stick with Sharpie for funkos and Poscas for Posters. Thank you so much for the video and helping me make a better choice!
Was your Posca oil based? If it is acrylic, it is bound to flake. We haven't tried the new Sharpies yet, they have changed their formula. Please test them before use. We hope to do an updated video soon. Deco oil based is our go-to now. I really wish we had the oil based when making this video, but they are great! We are so very sorry that happened to you!
@@Gastlecast Yeah. Overall I'm not a fan of how easy Posca can be scratched and run off compared to other brands. Did a test the other day on a Funkopop and a lot of the colors from Posca came off really easily compared to the Sharpies.
The thing I don't like about the Sharpie paint pen is that they have a tendency to have separation issues where they get really runny, and the paint stops mixing as well. I primed a pen I had only used once before, and I didn't trust using it because it was so runny. I was worried it would ruin the product if any pressure was applied. This happened with both a metallic gold and a pastel pink.
Love this video. Very informative. 🤔 You think the bleed out on some of those signatures you two did could've been caused by the alcohol you've been using to clean the ink off of your test runs? I noticed you mentioned on one of the test runs a particular pen didn't do that before, but when you signed again with the same pen it did have a bleed out. I'm just wondering if that's caused by the alcohol constantly being used cleaning the screen. Great video 🤘💀🤘
Thank you so much. 😄 It wasn't from the alcohol. We let the alcohol thoroughly dry between takes and tested them on the sides of the boxes for that very reason- to ensure it wasn't somehow due to the alcohol. 😊
I had one of the writers for daredevil sign 2 of my daredevil pop with metallic silver sharpie. Looks great, going to use the same pen to get my sting funko autograph. The metallic silver really pops out, highly suggest it.
Thanks for the suggestion! We still use the metallic paint pens when we get them signed because we feel they pop a bit more vs the permanent marker. We are very happy you are pleased with them though. 😄
Great video. My son and i are going to our first weebcon in Dallas. What tip size on the marker do you recommend for the Sharpie? Getting the plastic window signed outside of box. Did you mention getting the figure inside the box signed if so where? Can you also use the same Sharpie to get autographs on GLOSSY prints. Thanks.....Phil..
Hi Phil! We usually get medium or fine point Sharpies. We like them both. Fine is better if you have a quote. 😊 Yes you can use them on posters too. We don't get the figures themselves signed.
I get a lot of pops signed and have also tried different paint pens and wanted to note a few things I have noticed. consistencybeen prepped and not used for a while. Luckily most pens can be recovered by shaking them (sometimes a lot) more. I didn't know the posca was acrylic but every time I tested them I get that splotchy result so I never use them. The deco-color you had was an acrylic you said. They do make a oil-based version and it is actually better than a sharpie in some cases. You should give them a try. Another thing I noticed is that you had mostly broad tipped pens. They are actually a little more consistent than a fine-tipped and need less maintenance. However I use a fine tip pen because it helps show the details of the signature better, as well as gives more room for quotes or character names. But I do end up having to check the fine tipped pens right before I hand them to the celebrity just to make sure it is working right. One thing I have to help me check my pens is to carry a small notepad and a piece of clear plastic test the consistency.
We searched oil based on Amazon and that Deco popped up and we realized as we started the video it was acrylic. I can't believe that mistake was made! 😔 We will have to get an oil based to test out against the Sharpie. 😊 We like fine and medium point, but it was hard to find a consistent point throughout ordering all of them. I love the tip about shaking and testing prior to cons. We do that as well but did not think to mention it! 😊 Thank you!
I got 3 pops signed at FanExpo this weekend and one of those were Super Saiyan God Goku that I got signed by Sean Schemmel & I immediately put my thumb right through the signature before it was dry 🤣😭
So we actually used the wrong Deco- Amazon let us down when I searched for red oil based paint pen! We will be comparing Sharpie with an oil based Deco in an upcoming video- this one was acrylic. Oops!
You guys came in just in time!! Getting some pops signed next month and I didn't know how important those pens were. Really informative 👏 👌 thank you guys!!!! And thats scary how much a quick wipe with alcohol wiped the signatures off 😳 I definitely gana be careful.
What an interesting video, and thanks for the tip. I actually buy some Micheal paint pens for a comic con am going to in August. Can you please do a video on which is the best paint pen or marker for autographing a comic 🤔.
We like both! It depends on the look you like. The one in the video is medium, which will be thicker. Fine is thinner and it's preferred for quotes for us!
Loved the video because I live in Utah and our comic con is coming up and I want to get a pop singed and I didn’t even think about folding down box so thanks!! (I got my winter soldier funko soda and it was a common)
My white medium tip sharpie pen kinda webs out i tried it out to see how it would come out and it webs out kinda spreads the ink it looks weird but my sharpie paint pen fine tip looks really good
Before you make your decision, we didn't get the oil based Decos! We heard Deco oil based are great. These were acrylic and we didn't notice until we sat down to record. We did find an oil based set of Decos and plan on redoing this soon. We haven't tried them yet though! 😊
@@Gastlecast Oh! Whelp... Looks like I am going to be doing some testing on some pop protectors this weekend before ECCC on Sunday. :-) Thank you for the insight and update.
We do not do things like that, but the ones we showed look the best on windows so we would imagine that? Wish I had better advice for drawing on em though!
Hey David!!! It depends, both have a different look. We use medium in this video. We like medium if we are just getting an auto. But if we are getting a quote, too, we prefer fine. Amazon is the cheapest place we have found. Medium: amzn.to/3DnonBf Unfortunately, the fine set that we like is out of stock. But you can also find it at Michael's! They also have some packs of individual fine markers. We just like this set because we get a lot of autographs!
@@Gastlecast thanks for the help! I went to my local Hobby Lobby last night in preparation for an Austin St. John signing and to my surprise, they had all the individual marker sizes, fine/medium/broad, on sale for ¢.99 😳 definitely took advantage.
I know I am just now seeing this video after a year lol but, I just got into going to cons this year and I am going to one in 8 days. Did you use a fine point sharpie or a medium point in this video? Thankyou so much for the video
Ha, it's ok! We love when people watch our older videos. 😊 We used medium in this video, however, we didn't mention that we like medium for autos only and fine for auto and quote! Here is another video we did that we think is very informative and has more helpful tips: th-cam.com/video/CNDm78Hei-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KP4eIqNwq4IsIybr
thankyou so much for the reply back and this was super helpful. I really enjoyed the content and I will definitely start watching some more videos now that I have found this page (:
Thank you! It depends on what you are looking for. We really love "fine" and "medium" point. Fine for quotes and signatures! We like medium if we are just looking for a signature, too! 😊
little late to the game but what size paint pen do you use? i recently bought sharpie “fine” size at staples but i want to green/blue/purple but i can only find them in medium at walmart and dont want to spend $36 at michaels for them
Hi! We use medium and fine point depending on what we are getting. Fine for auto and quote. Medium for just auto typically! 😊 In this video, we used medium for the Sharpie. Amazon has 8 fine for $20 here: amzn.to/3VY8Cri And they have 8 medium for less than $19 here: amzn.to/3uwn0eO Hope this helps! 🩷
Great video. But I see a lot of people switching to fluorescent pens. Which are mostly water based do you have any recommendations on those types of pens
We do not recommend water based at all. They will come right off. If you want fluorescent, we recommend thes, however, the colors are limited. amzn.to/3yW9I0r
Hellll yeaaa! I did get 2 signed with regular sharpie, it doesn’t bother me that much. But those sharpie paint pen are my new go to! Loved the information you guys brought! 🔥🔥🔥
Yes! Here is our favorite medium point set, which is the Sharpie size we used in this video! You always want an oil based pen for Funko Pops. 😊 amzn.to/3kxeevB
@@Gastlecast thank you, recently was at the voice actor of Killua signing and when she seen my permanent markers i had, she was like telling me to looking into these and i was confused but thanks to your video i see why
@isaiahjohnson6564 That's awesome, I'm glad we could help. 😊 There are a lot more colors too. We like medium point and fine point for pop signings. Anything larger or smaller is too much.
We accidentally got water based (after searching for oil based). We plan on doing an update video at some point! We hear great things about Deco and were surprised too until we realized the mistake. 🤣❤️
@@GastlecastHow do you know if it's water based or oil based? It doesn't say on the pen. I had two photos signed with Deco Color on glossy paper and the ink would not dry to save my life.
Sharpie is king! Great and informative video! Great timing since I just went to a con today and got some graphs. Would you recommend sharpie for a Funko Soda can as well?
You're very welcome! We have never tried paint pens on a Soda can. Regular sharpies have worked just fine for us personally, but maybe a paint pen Soda test would be good? 🤔
Thank you for doing this, because I am going to a con soon for to get my first signed pop and the colour strangely I was going to using red and posca lol One thing I did not hear was the size of the nib on the pen lol Please keep doing stuff like this
@@Gastlecast the oil based. No matter how I prep the red and blue specifically, they come out so transparent, I tested them next to regular sharpie and they looked near the same
a.co/d/fSNX5YP Here is a set of a bunch of sharpies! You can find them at Michael's, Walmart, Target, and other places in a bunch of colors and sizes. 😊
@@juliancar5700 We get ours signed on the pop. We only showed the protector trick because it makes it easy for choosing colors. We get our items signed and when we get home, they go directly into a protector to protect the signature. 😊
Which Sharpie point tip do you use? On the Instagram post, the image says that the tip is a medium tip. In a link that you posted here, the ones that appear on the Amazon page are fine tips. I've tried pausing the video to see which one you were using but I can't see the text that indicates which point tip you're using. Thank you for this video.
We used medium tip on this video. We choose the tip based off what we are getting. For quotes, we use fine tips, for signatures, we typically use medium. It depends on what look you want!
@@izitjusmeorwat4503 How'd you know it was me? Most people assume it's Chris that always replies! 😛 You're very welcome. We wouldn't be here without all of you, and we are equally as grateful! 🥰
@@Gastlecast Uhm, I "listen" to the sound of what someone has written and can "usually" tell who writes what . Or at least I hope I can -- I'm totally fallible. What you wrote has your cadence and phrasing. I've watched the gastlecast for about 2 years now and I hope that I've paid enough attention to tell who is responding. Maybe.
What do you mean? When they're out of box? We just keep them home. We are mostly out of box so it doesn't bother us to keep the pops out of their boxes for a bit. 😊
@@Gastlecast yeah, I think it's weird getting a pop signed with out the pop, I feel like they miss out on some of the fun. But I get it, flat box is probably easier to sign too.
@@thesimpsonsdiditpodcast Hahahahaa we have taken pops before. It's no problem if you take a few pops to just put them into a protector. When we take more than a few, that's when we flatten them. 😊 We tell the pops all about the celebrity when we get home so the pops can feel like they were part of it though. 😛
In this video, we use medium, but it depends on what you are getting and the look you're going for. We generally use medium for just an auto, but if we get a quote and auto, we like fine point. We plan on creating a more in depth video soon! Here's a link to an assorted pack of medium point on Amazon: amzn.to/3VChAKp And here's a link to a set of fine point: amzn.to/3IjTeSq We have found they are more affordable on Amazon!
I’ve always wondered what the best brand was to go with - by the brightness & the dry time so this video was literally perfect for me. Random, but I ordered a Chevy Chase signed pop from 7 Bucks a Pop & instead of signing in the red paint pens they provided him, he elected to sign it in a silver paint pen that you could tell wasn’t even properly primed. It’s one of the worst looking signatures I own, but because it’s the legend Chevy Chase I decided to keep it vs sending it back for a refund.
@DFrost25 We are so happy to hear that! 😄 Wow that's weird, I wonder why he didn't use the red? That stinks, but hey- you got a FREAKIN CHEVY CHASE AUTO!!! We would have kept it too. 🤩
It depends on what you want it to look like. We like medium for just autos but fine if we want a quote as well! th-cam.com/video/CNDm78Hei-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MoaB53f9xiplFnbY Here is an updated video comparing the two, as well as some tips and tricks and suggestions for going to cons and getting your autographs! ❤️
Hi! In this video, we feature medium, but it truly depends on what you are looking for. We generally use medium for just an auto, but if we get a quote and auto, we like fine point. We plan on creating a new video soon highlighting the differences. 😊
@@bukhadavid You're very welcome! Here's a link to an assorted pack of medium point on Amazon: amzn.to/3VChAKp And here's a link to a set of fine point: amzn.to/3IjTeSq We have found they are much more affordable than in store. 😊
Hi! We didn't forget, this video was not about everything, it was simply a test between "best" and "worst". 😊 We feel it's up to the person getting the auto to decide what point they like best. Our personal preference is medium point (as shown in the video) if it's just a signature, fine point if it's a quote and signature typically. We do plan on doing a video highlighting autographs and their process more in depth sometime in the future. Thanks for watching!
I could have missed it sorry if i did. Whag size sharpie paint pen did you use? I was looking on ebay says ultra fine, fine, medium... which one was yours please? Also in general new ones do they ever dry out? I have a little box and comic con section in my bedroom. I have never been to comic con but have always wanted to go id love to have a signed funko. Ive got a little notepad and box of all the things i wish one day theres a chance i could do if things ever got better. I started having symptoms around 13years old i didnt tell parents and wanted to push through thought maybe it would all just go away i was sporty and just tried to keep going. I ended up getting worse after a while it was noticeable at school i was bullied because you could visibly see me getting unwell and i wasnt how i was. Unfortunatly around age 15 my life turned upside down and as i got my diagnoses i spent most my teenager years in hospital i was very unwell intensive care alot going on alot of hospital instays alongside severe infections on top which hit me harder becauss of my health anyway. Lots going on my mum is amazing even up to now still looking after me things are really bad at the moment im not coping with alot going on and my health im trying to keep positive but im at the lowest ive ever been. We talk about things id like to do i know i cant do everything if things got better like i use to... i never watcher tv really but with being unwell hospital surgery recovering etc etc.. i started watching some tv series a friend told me about funkos and i said ok and said mum can i have the100 funko pop set for christmas. This was when they first came out i said i only want them ones well im age 26 now and thats the only gifts i want now haha. I cant do much and not really into anything i was all sport prior. But i sooo want to go to comic con for about 12years now unfortunatly became more and more out of reach. Im still hoping. Mum gets me comic con second hand bits on ebay and programmes i watch on youtube and im there haha i wish i could be in person id love to get a signed funko pop. Sounds silly as i know i cant havent been able to since i wanted too. But i sometimes get things and put in my little hope box of things i get to do so my programmes of comic cons i get second hand on ebay go in there i was thinking of putting some sharpie paint pens in they might dry out given the fact ive wanted to go for about 12 years and my health i just havent managed to and im currently just with everything going through the hardest time in my life. But i want some hope so weird reason i know as may never be able to go and get a signed pop... but incase or to keep hope going id like to get some of the sharpie pens. What size was yours please? Thank you x
We used medium here but we also like fine, especially for quotes. We are so sorry to hear about that. We hope you are doing well and bope you get to a comic con one day. 💕
@@Gastlecast Thank you very much 🙂 i will get a couple put them in my box 🙂 i have a notebook al everything is inside we always wanted to so together so its like a bucket list but i have some bits i wrote in it to my mum to still basically do all these things still if anything did happen and tick through our list slowly so she still does it. So basicslly its there for one day if treatment and things got better and its there if anything else went the other way... so basically the box will have everything ready to go 🙂 i try look at things both way as find it healthier too because for a long time u can put so nuch pressure on looking at things one way of your going and things can happen that u really cant or take such a scary turn that the other thinf could happen. We dont talk talk about it but i do add on always still do it though one day if we dont get too. Some things i find easier to write down than say. Im really low at moment so just break down crying so i write things down alot even now if im going through something i might be crying as i write it but its easier than speaking it if that makes sense the fact its quicker to write it than try speak it when your in a bit of a state and upset its easier to right other times when ok to in general life speaking than writing it is quicker. But in the book i have alot of things even things id of liked to do that mums doesnt fully know so again a challange for her one day maybe both of us although a few of them im 99.9% sure my drs and consultant would say absolutely not 😂 ive had that a few times i say it because i use to be hundred miles per hour but now my brain can be when my body isnt so i say it knowing i cant but i want to but i cant. Thank you i will buy those pens! Ive not seen them in the uk weirdly ive just gone on ebay and only 2 people in uk selling them. I looked on our hobbycraft website they have loads of paint pens but not one is sharpie. So ebay it is haha. Will get some now 😀 thank you so much 😀 Also love watching the videos by you both too 😀 x
@@hannahspanna5557 We love your positive attitude! 💕 Your mom sounds incredible. 😄 We have also heard Deco brand markers are great. In this video, we got the wrong ones and didn't realize until we recorded. 😔 See if you can find oil based Deco markers. We haven't tried them ourselves, but we have heard amazing things. Maybe they will have them over there. 😁 Thank you so, so much!
We heard the old Sharpie paint pens are hard to come by. These are medium point oil based! We also love Deco oil based. Make sure it's oil, not acrylic!
We actually made a follow up video to this one explaining a bit more and adding extra tips along, you can check it out here! th-cam.com/video/CNDm78Hei-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=V8P0nSSXjxGMzGhK To answer your question though, honestly color > tip size preference for me personally. There isn't a HUGE difference between medium and fine, however, if it's between the two, I'd definitely go with fine if they have the color I want. We normally like to get some sort of quote, and we find that fine is a bit easier for that. 😊
Guys you should’ve done the scratch test on it too. Sharpie’s going to be the best still though spoiler. All water-based will be scratched off easily. Some oil-based does too but Sharpie oil-based doesn’t.
@@Gastlecast I gotcha! :) I kinda feel like scratches are more for important though since no matter how many years it’s been dry the signature will still scratch unlike some brands like Sharpie which is scratch resistant while the other you can wipe it off easy even with a cloth. Love informative videos like this! Helps out a lot of new people getting into the signature community :P
I love this video, but how do you store the pens while in line. I've used the T5 ones (big mistake) and when I was priming them it was like the would erupt and be a giant mess after keeping them in my pocket while waiting. what do you reccomend?
We had this happen one time. We honestly just put them in whatever bag or backpack we are using. Since that has happened, we carry a piece of paper and prime again while in line to make sure the pen doesn't go nuts. It hasn't happened since! We would be open to suggestions if you or anyone else has a different idea though. It's such a scary thought!
@willywill4784 The problem we had was actually not with a Sharpie. It was with another brand (I can't think of the name) because we wanted a specific color. The experience just scared us that bad. 🤣
How long does it take to get an autograph at a con? Do you have to wait for hours or do you find it's relatively quick? CE2E is this weekend and if I go on Sunday (the only day I can attend), I'll have my 2 children with me. They are 9 and 11. With the price of an autograph at $60, I'm not sure if this is something that I'm ready to invest my time and money. This would be my 1st time at CE2E.
shit i didn't even think about them shipping those signed grails without protected lmao😂...I guess we'll see. Congratulations again on the epic Toxic Gastley drop 🎉
I noticed this experimenting before I went to get my pops signed maybe it's because posca is water based and Sharpie pen is oil based 🤷 Posca pens seems to be pretty good on posters
@@kevinlefrank6602 Of course! We should also note that we have never used a paint pen on a Funko Soda. We have only used their regular permanent markers.
@@Gastlecast Yes, I understand. I will try to experiment with both before the next con. It is very hard to find anyone online with any experience with autographs on sodas for some reason 🤷♂️

Yes it is! We recently got a figure signed with a regular black sharpie and it worked well! Paint pens are also a good choice too depending on the color of your figure. 😊
Great video as always! May also want to consider the tip size (no pun intended 😂). The paint pens can have a broad tip, fine tip, or extra fine tip which can also affect how the autograph looks. Things to consider if you’re also looking to get a quote/inscription.
Absolutely, we mentioned that a bit in the video but due to how long it was, we cut it out. It was impossible to find pens all the same size though for the purpose of this video. 🤣
Great informative video, thanks for this experiment. I always just grabbed random paint markers off the shelf at Walmart but will pay more attention to detail in the future.
I suggest fine if you’re adding a long quote or don’t want it to occupy the entire window. Some people like to still be able to see the pop clearly. Try to get a peak and see how the actor is signing to make a better decision.
I’m more into sports autographs but for me I like molotow for colors. Molotow also has A LOT of colors available. Some of the their neon line pens would prob look pretty cool on the black light funkos actually. I like Prisma for silver or gold. Sharpie paint if im in a pinch since sharpie paint is easier to find in stores. Deco spiders webs (what I call the marks you got lol) and their red likes to fade into a lighter red/pink after a while btw
Yup, I agree with your comment on Deco Color. The black and white I think are good. I went to a con last year and used a red deco color to have a glossy photo signed. The color turned to a light red and you could barely see it against the black background and it wouldn't dry completely. It took over an hour for it to dry and even then some of the paint still came off when I put it in a protective sleeve. I also had another photo signed in deco color green and it seemed to dry pretty quickly. I also put it in protective sleeve. When I got home and tried to remove the photo from the sleeve it also took some of the paint off. Very upsetting when you spend alot of money to have stuff signed. I also am very careful to make sure my stuff is dry before putting it away.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Rookies like me need info like this. I'm excited to go to my first Con!! The idea for folding the box after it is signed it pure genius! You guys 🪨!!
Glad we could help!!!
Sweet! So glad we could help! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for comparing. Can you guys cover UV and/or Flouroscent pens?
We recommend Sakura fluorescent pens, they work very well on pops and all things! Here's a link:

So glad we could help! This was a Heather idea! She had brilliant ones!
Thank you for taking the time to put this together, great info.

Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Where was this video before I went to my first Con and got pops signed, LOL. Keep it up.
Hahahaha we are so sorry! It sounds like you made a freaking awesome solution though omg! 🤩
id strongly encourage you guys to try out deco colors oil-based paint pens. they are what I mainly use alongside sharpie and have been fantastic for me.
We think it is very helpful!

me and my buddy found that testing our paint markers on soft pop protectors gives us a good idea of the appearance and dry time.
Thank you! We do the same. We made an updated video recently that's a bit more organized and highlights some tips as well:

This is an awesome video! I just started getting into having my pops signed after collecting for years. This is an amazing video for a newbie like me. Thank you! 🙏🏻
You're welcome! We would like to do some updates, so you may see yet another video from us soon on this topic!
My favorite autograph I have right now is homelander, met him at nycc last year and my least favorite is Kevin Smith
Hell ya!
Exactly! You must test prior!
Appreciate the tips. I’m going to my first convention this year (since I was 2 years old lol) and am hoping to get a signature
Omg we hope you have the best time! I wanted to share another video we created after this one that's filled with more tips: th-cam.com/video/CNDm78Hei-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bEQNaKJZFpH6q5Go
I hope it helps and hope you have a blast!
Nice video, appreciate you both doing this one!!!!!
Glad to help!
I would like to also point out for those that don't know when you use the sharpie marker again weeks or months again the repriming of the marker takes a much longer time for the paint to have good consistency.
Excellent advice. We always re-buy markers, as we have had this happen with most brands! 😊 It's worth the investment to us.
@@Gastlecast The posca was waterbased, I wasn't familiar they sold the oil based?
@2Clu I think I'm mistaken, I could have sworn we had oil based Posca but I just looked and they're water based.
@@Gastlecast Yeah. Overall I'm not a fan of how easy Posca can be scratched and run off compared to other brands. Did a test the other day on a Funkopop and a lot of the colors from Posca came off really easily compared to the Sharpies.
Thanks for all the info. Got my first pop signed this weekend. Went with Sharpie fine point yellow, and it looks amazing.
Omg we have a few pops signed in yellow and it POPS!!! 🤩 Excellent choice. And you're very welcome! ❤️
So fine point way to go?
@@taylormadebum111 For signatures, yes. It keeps the lines from mashing together.
We haven't had that problem with our sharpie pens!
I think this was a very informative video. Thanks for the advice. Awesome!
Glad to help!
I might be going to a con in the winter so video is a very good guide. Thanks guys :)
🥰 glad to help!
Great video, loved all the info. Would love it if someone a made a flat funko box holder for cons.
🥰 glad we could help!
Yes you can use them on posters too.
I know this video is old but any update on using the new Sharpie Creative Markers for autographs?
I got 3 pops signed at FanExpo this weekend and one of those were Super Saiyan God Goku that I got signed by Sean Schemmel & I immediately put my thumb right through the signature before it was dry 🤣😭
ohhhh nooooooo!!!!!!!
I love this video. Surprised about the deco but I really liked the sharpie
So we actually used the wrong Deco- Amazon let us down when I searched for red oil based paint pen! We will be comparing Sharpie with an oil based Deco in an upcoming video- this one was acrylic. Oops!
@@Gastlecast I was wondering cuz I never had trouble before
@@kixkollects Yeah I'm just stupid. 😂 We will update everyone once we receive the oil based one. 😊
@@Gastlecast it's am honest mistake. Doesn't make u stupid
That seemed real out of character for Deco to me as well...plus it never dries that fast in my experience
you can also use top loaders to put the folded boxes in!
❤️
You guys came in just in time!! Getting some pops signed next month and I didn't know how important those pens were. Really informative 👏 👌 thank you guys!!!! And thats scary how much a quick wipe with alcohol wiped the signatures off 😳 I definitely gana be careful.

Thanks for this review. I am getting some pops signed this weekend and was worried. I'm going with the Sharpie.
I also subscribed. Thanks again.
Amazing, thanks for watching. Let us know how it goes. They have a lot of colors as well, which is another reason we love Sharpie!
gabriel iglesias uses deco the one with the metal in the middle and it looks better then sharpie

What an interesting video, and thanks for the tip. I actually buy some Micheal paint pens for a comic con am going to in August.
Can you please do a video on which is the best paint pen or marker for autographing a comic 🤔.
Hmm we don't do much with comics but maybe we could take a look!

So glad to help!
Great info, I guess I’m buying Sharpie paint pens
🤘 theyre the best!
Hello the team, I have a second question please, do you use a sharpie pen oil fine or medium ? Thank you for the answer. Jean-marc
We like both! It depends on the look you like. The one in the video is medium, which will be thicker. Fine is thinner and it's preferred for quotes for us!
@@Gastlecast Thank you for the answer, I will try both 😉
Tysm for this video. I’m going to the 90s con and definitely didn’t wanna use a regular sharpie made that mistake last year 😢
You are so welcome!
Loved the video because I live in Utah and our comic con is coming up and I want to get a pop singed and I didn’t even think about folding down box so thanks!! (I got my winter soldier funko soda and it was a common)

My white medium tip sharpie pen kinda webs out i tried it out to see how it would come out and it webs out kinda spreads the ink it looks weird but my sharpie paint pen fine tip looks really good
Interesting, we have used white, medium Sharpie and never had that issue! 🤔
Great video! Thank you SO much for this video. I was about to buy some DECO pens until I found this video. YOU"RE all the best! Thank you!
Before you make your decision, we didn't get the oil based Decos! We heard Deco oil based are great. These were acrylic and we didn't notice until we sat down to record. We did find an oil based set of Decos and plan on redoing this soon. We haven't tried them yet though! 😊

@@thattonyadams Let us know what you find if you do! We are eager to know. 😁 We do LOVE Sharpie though!
My problem with Sharpie pens is that they seem to only be good for one use, at least the silver ones
We don't really use silver, but have had luck with multiple uses on them with other colors. I might break out a silver one to see what's up! 🤣
Awesome! Any tips on what to use to customize the boxes like painting the windows?
We do not do things like that, but the ones we showed look the best on windows so we would imagine that? Wish I had better advice for drawing on em though!
What point do you recommend for the sharpies? Medium or fine?
Hey David!!! It depends, both have a different look. We use medium in this video. We like medium if we are just getting an auto. But if we are getting a quote, too, we prefer fine. Amazon is the cheapest place we have found.
Medium:

Unfortunately, the fine set that we like is out of stock. But you can also find it at Michael's! They also have some packs of individual fine markers. We just like this set because we get a lot of autographs!

little late to the game but what size paint pen do you use? i recently bought sharpie “fine” size at staples but i want to green/blue/purple but i can only find them in medium at walmart and dont want to spend $36 at michaels for them

Thank you x

Will get some now 😀 thank you so much 😀
Also love watching the videos by you both too 😀 x
@@hannahspanna5557 We love your positive attitude! 💕 Your mom sounds incredible. 😄
We have also heard Deco brand markers are great. In this video, we got the wrong ones and didn't realize until we recorded. 😔 See if you can find oil based Deco markers. We haven't tried them ourselves, but we have heard amazing things. Maybe they will have them over there. 😁 Thank you so, so much!
Does anyone have advise for fine point or medium point? I noticed there was both options available for the sharpie on Amazon.
We prefer medium for signature only. If we are getting any quotes, we use fine. 😊
@Gastlecast thank you for the reply 🙏 my son and I are going to our first con this weekend so all the advice has been amazing!!
What’s the sharpie pen version used in this video? I want to get the exact same one
We heard the old Sharpie paint pens are hard to come by. These are medium point oil based! We also love Deco oil based. Make sure it's oil, not acrylic!
Do you recommend medium or fine tip?
We actually made a follow up video to this one explaining a bit more and adding extra tips along, you can check it out here!

To answer your question though, honestly color > tip size preference for me personally.
We were considering it, but thought it was too much. Accidental smears are much more likely to happen than a full on scratch. 🤣
@@Gastlecast I gotcha! :)
I kinda feel like scratches are more for important though since no matter how many years it’s been dry the signature will still scratch unlike some brands like Sharpie which is scratch resistant while the other you can wipe it off easy even with a cloth.
@@Gastlecast I'm not sure i'm going to try out the sharpie paint pens cause carrying a towel around to clean up might be seen as weird haha
@willywill4784 The problem we had was actually not with a Sharpie. It was with another brand (I can't think of the name) because we wanted a specific color. The experience just scared us that bad. 🤣
Do you use medium tip or fine tip
It depends what we are getting. We like medium for just the auto. But if we are getting a quote as well, we like fine! 😊
Deco colour or normal sharpies are best i think
❤️
How long does it take to get an autograph at a con? Do you have to wait for hours or do you find it's relatively quick? CE2E is this weekend and if I go on Sunday (the only day I can attend), I'll have my 2 children with me. They are 9 and 11. With the price of an autograph at $60, I'm not sure if this is something that I'm ready to invest my time and money. This would be my 1st time at CE2E.
Sometimes you do have to wait a while.
The longest we've waited was 5 hrs!
@@Gastlecast good to know. Thanks!
Great tips, but what size pen fine medium for an average pop?
If you’re getting an auto plus a quote definitely fine point, but if it’s just the auto then medium is the way.
Fine and medium are awesome! So sorry we are just now seeing this comment. We like medium for just auto and fine for auto + quote. Hope this helps+
What were you using to wipe off the signatures?
Just an alcohol pad. 😊
shit i didn't even think about them shipping those signed grails without protected lmao😂...I guess we'll see. Congratulations again on the epic Toxic Gastley drop 🎉
Oh they'll ship them without any protection and we'll be here to make a video to cover those scenarios LOL
@@Gastlecast I'll be tuning in for that A1 content
The video that I exactly need it thank you so much
You're so, so welcome! ❤️
I noticed this experimenting before I went to get my pops signed maybe it's because posca is water based and Sharpie pen is oil based 🤷
Posca pens seems to be pretty good on posters
Yes the water based is not great on plastic! 😊
Do you use medium or fine point sharpie paint pens? I'm trying to decide what would be best for funko sodas. I forgot to ask earlier. 🙃
The sharpie is medium point :) sorry that we did not include that!
@@Gastlecast no worries! Thanks for getting back to me!
@@kevinlefrank6602 That's a great idea! 😄
What’s the marker from 10:31 called?
It is Craftsmart from Michael's. We have had issues with this particular pen separating before, but didn't notice too much of that in the video, but just wanted to note that.
You can find it here:

Thank You so much. I’m gonna try it out and see how it goes.
Please let us know how it goes! ❤️
Awesome content
🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
The disrespect for Deco :( I get it, I'm passionate about what I use too. I've never had a pop signed before, but on movie posters deco is king.
We LOVE Deco! We got the wrong ones, they were acrylic. 😭 We clear it up in future videos.
Hi luv the pen section. I'm wanting to get my funko pop car signed and not the box. Is that doable
Yes it is! We recently got a figure signed with a regular black sharpie and it worked well! Paint pens are also a good choice too depending on the color of your figure. 😊
@@Gastlecast hey thanks.
It's agent coulson car Lola. It's red so was thinking white or silver?
@@janetlamb4424 Either of those would look amazing!!!
What are you using to wipe the Funko window?
Alcohol pads!
What tip size would you recommend?
@@carlosdl637 We personally like fine for quotes and medium for signatures, but the commenter may have other advice!
@@carlosdl637 I use a fine tip paint pen.
Awesome
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Great informative video, thanks for this experiment. I always just grabbed random paint markers off the shelf at Walmart but will pay more attention to detail in the future.
Glad to help out!
Idk if yall also collect Marvel Legends figures bc it would be cool on tips and tricks on that
You can use the same pens for Legends!
Sharpies rule!!!
🥰
I supply my own ink, it dries in about 3-4 days…🐙
Ayyyyye 🐙
What size point is the sharpie
This Sharpie is medium point, but we love the fine point, too. Especially for quotes!
@@Gastlecast thank you!
@@SuperZ11569 Anytime!
Fine or medium point?
In this video, we use medium point, but we use fine and medium point depending on the look we are going for! 😊
Wow thank you so much for all of this! We will definitely do more experimenting in the future. 😄
Is the bearded man a canadian , he says the vowel 'o' in a very interesting manner
