    Solder splices are commonly used on aircraft for convenience and repeatability. (We kept them on USAF bench stock.) Not cheap but if you've a need for them they work nicely. Aircraft harness repair often involves working next to wire bundles so we'd use a heat gun with a shield on the tip to focus hot air only were we wanted it. An easy heat shield for adjacent areas can be made by cutting a soda can with scissors. Aluminum foil works too.

    Been using 3M weather-pack connectors for years, it's the only way to go. NSPA brings it to a new level and I will be checking them out for future projects. Great video for those in the industry looking for real quality. Using proper tools and high quality products is key for long-term repairs. This is the stuff I really want to see more of. Thanks for bringing the NSPA rep to Andys Auto Sport to show us these great products and procedures.

    Hmm interesting i havent seen these before. When i splice, i prefer to use a butt connector with dielectric grease in it, crimp it then put dielectric grease in the heat shrink tubing and then shrink that. Ive been doing this for years and some have been in extreme environments without failure (100,000+ miles in extreme mountain winter driving in underbody applications)

    Why do expensive operations like this use dollar-store crimp-tools? The crimps themselves are designed to be fitted with a specific crimp-tool that exerts the correct pressure to give a perfect joint. When you carry out a pull-off test on a properly made crimp, the wire will break as often as the crimp will fail.
    Use The Proper Tool and don't spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar!

    Great video but soldering is always better then crimping

    • @sebibv15
      @sebibv15 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tyler Plunkett Yes, but solder it's not suited for the conectors from the engine bay, because the heat can get the solder points to get loose

    • @ferrariowner123
      @ferrariowner123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Tyler Plunkett Not technically True, a crimp (When done correctly) will always be stronger than a solder connection. I used to think like you, But from my personal experience, it was inadequate tools, and lack of knowledge. Here's something to ponder on, you will almost NEVER find a solder connection in a race application, and Rarely in OEM applications, so if they don't solder, makes you wonder why, right?. Solder leaves a cleaner look under the heat-shrink, but its much more susceptible to damage and eventual failure from heat, and is very brittle when cooled.

    The instructions are going too fast.. If we (the youtube viewers) are the target audience, we can't really see what is going on.. The instructor needs to go slower and show the product to the camera, making sure it is in focus and clearly seen and understood instead of just explaining at 100+ miles an hour.. I gave up viewing after 20 minutes since I was really interested but I was losing track on what was being explained and that got me frustrated and I gave up viewing it..

    These things are junk. I know how to solder and although the concept seems great, they are NOT dependable. I tried a couple different ways and watched some videos. I used a heat gun and didn’t get good solder melt. Then I used my mini torch. The solder did a good melt. However once I cut the heat shrink off then gave it the “pull” test. The strands easily pulled apart. I feel the issue is the low heat solder melts and disperses but the wire strands don’t get hot enough to do a good bond to the solder. In order to get the strands hot enough the solder would be like water and run out and the heat wrap would burn up.

    these dont require a torch, the solder in these melt under a heat gun (thats what theyre designed to do) through the insulation plastic.
    they also heat under the heat of a high amperage, and engine heat. you'd have to be stupid to use these on engines.

      *Agreed. It is all too easy to nick wire strands with those combo stripper/crimper/screw cutters. Learned that the hard way. However they excel at cleanly shearing/shortening 4-40 to 10-32 machine screws, so is worth having one in the toolbox.*
      *One stripper that Aerospace/MIL/NASA and I prefer (and use) is the IDEAL Industries or Greenlee EZ-Wire Stripper ~$80 new but have bulky cast zinc frame. Used ones with slimmer stamped steel frame and still sharp blades on eBay for ~$30. It's the only one I know of that correctly strips Kapton insulation from stranded AWG 22 to AWG 12 without damage.
