Many companies, but not all, will push you to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you let them. Samsung did that to me, and my "high" salary was less than minimum wage if you consider the hours I was working! Now that I am no longer there, it's easy to see, but when you're in it, it feels like you have to do it!

I expected the burn out result. I think 8 hours Mon-Fri is too much to work for a whole life honestly.

A hint for folks. That co-worker who makes a commit at 2:00 AM is probably not doing the 18hr day at your company. It's more than likely they did NOTHING in the afternoon or have a side hustle consulting so they made that commit at 2:00 AM to meet a deadline that they could have met had they committed it at 2:00 PM. They are most likely not the superhero that folks think they are.

To provide another perspective, I am someone who does work into the late hours fairly often... And it's not for a lack of trying during normal business hours, or that I have some other obligations like children or a side gig. It's actually a glaring sign that I'm running on fumes, and productivity has declined because of burnout. I have to produce a certain amount of output and I do, but it takes me 12 hours to do what I could do in 6 or fewer hours if I were fully recharged. I love my job, but it's mentally taxing. The issues compound upon themselves because as I have to work longer and longer to make up for slowed output, I get more exhausted and productive worsens. So when I'm responding to an email at 2 AM or pushing commits to Git at 4AM (I did that this week actually), that's why.

Or the product stakeholders and other members of the team don't leave the person alone long enough to do their job, so they do it when everyone is asleep and stops pinging them for help with things that they can't figure out on their own. I'll trade you my jaded for your jaded. ;)

Whenever I experience burnout.. I file vacation leaves, those week-long kind 😌
However, I also learned that it is possible for me to not appreciate those paid vacation leaves- because of guilt?
Like.. I worry about my teammates, or the actual work getting butchered while I'm away 😆
So, I render insane overtime work before my vacation leave schedule.. working as if it was my last day, makes me feel fulfilled and enjoy my vacation days more ☺️

Great video! I admit I've had burn out to the point where I had to take an extended time off because of the physical effects of burn out. I worked at a start up and hustle culture was company culture. I'm grateful for that time in my life though since it's given me prospective on what's important in my life. For me, it's spending time with my friends and family and finding projects that utilize creativity. I'll definitely use these principles when searching for my next job.

But on the other hand, I bartend at this super crazy busy stressful place lol. But the cash, hours and flexibility are good. I've always been a night owl. Can't bartend forever, right.

I encountered that exact situation in november last year. I felt exactly like not having any motivation at all and the slightest query from my customer or collegue caused me to feel very uncomfortable or even angry. Gladly, my boss is someone you can talk about such things and he allowed me to step back and work less hours a week (one day per week less to be exact) with keeping my salary for two months and I could have even extended that time period if I felt the need to do so.
That allowed me to sort out my working habits which helped a lot. I get job offers a lot and I would earn even more money there but to be honest: the possibility to talk with your boss that way and to get help no matter what is so valuable, that I wouldn't quit and change even if I would double my income.
That said: thank you for the video. Speaking about that topic is soo important!

Hello Tiff, I come from the chemical industry and those statistics are not surprising at all, even more now with the pandemic situation, the line between life and work has become totally blurred, you can send an email on Sunday at let's say 2pm and you may get a reply in a few min.
Personally, I think the healthiest option is to set limits and if your manager is giving you more tasks than you can handle, is obvious the company needs more resources.
I recall a quote from MJ DeMarco that says "Time is an asset that you will never be able to retrieve, whereas money and other stuff can be easily gotten back".
Your content is gold, thanks for sharing.

Exactly. Eveyone trying to rush but doesn't take the time to enjoy life and what you have. It ends up being, keeping up with the jones and not being happy. You're working hard just go make money in order o impress other people instead of trying go improve your own life.

I have a team of about 100 people in India. These are the guidelines I set with our US clients:
    - our team can’t work full US hours, as it means working the night shift in India. It has long term health issues and results in high attrition. Clients are understanding
    - tell my team, don’t try to impress a client by working late on extending hours, especially in the beginning. There will be certain times where you will need stretch, client will appreciate you more when you help them during that time.
    - there are also times when the work slows down. During this, I ask our managers to not bother the employees. Let them relax.
    Worked well so far

I got burned out, cuz I read a lot and self-educated a lot. Sounds stupid, but its how it is. I wish I knew before that I could burn out. I would not push myself so hard. Now almost the year in a half passed since I burned out and Im not fully recover yet. Guys take care of yourselves, cuz Its as important as push yourselve to work.

  • @rob9999

I have pushed myself too hard throughout my twenties. Not sure I regret it because it got me far. But I was apart of a layoff at a very ideal job recently and so that kinda messed me up. Lots of layoffs still. I did manage to land on my feet at a new company, but they have a very micro-managed mentality, and they literally operate off an extremely unreasonable intensity because of a demanding market. now I'm barely able to keep my head above water in terms of performance. Every day now feels like a death sentence so im getting ready to leave in a couple of weeks. Luckily I have some reserves to survive for a while. Moving jobs isn't a good idea right now because im afraid to bring the burn-out with me. But gosh, in this work market its difficult to just take a break.

I've been in tech since the 80s and what I've seen is an increase in unqualified people entering the industry, many of whom are then quickly elevated to management positions that they shouldn't be in. Also an increase in pointless rigmarole and admin that no developer needs or wants because some tosser wrote a book. You have to learn to tune out of the noise as a developer otherwise you will go insane.
