Big props to Marc for trying so hard to switch up his strats within these series. He could just do the most broken version of his build and fly to GM. But he makes sure to try every variant possible even if its really difficult!
This is what I wanted when you were doing the cheese to grandmaster. Anytime you did a PF rush, it never worked or was half-hearted. I love this series.
You know Marc, you're putting in so much effort to enterain us yet we do nothing but sit here and twiddle our thumbs so I just want to say, merry christmas Marc to you and your family, and I hope you have a fantastic new year. Thank you for everything you do!
35:10 Ryan McBeth always says problems have solutions but dilemmas don't, so you should create dilemmas for your enemies. Way to create a PF / Hellion dilemma!
I'm so impressed and so entertained at the same time :) I love all the little details, like blocking the probes in the choke in the mineral line with the first reaper, getting two shots off, then killing the damaged probe while running away; or knowing exactly which units are going to die and which engagements are profitable, or reading the path of the observer. It must be scary for these guys to play against you. I also really like hearing the considerations that go into your builds. And the most important part: it's so clear that you're having a lot of fun :D
For longer macro games can you try prioritizing the upgrades in the Engineering bay and see how much of an advantage they offer to the BF? Range and defense seem to be quite helpful here.
Armor upgrade alone cuts worker DPS by 40% and for zerglings as well, marines lose 33% dps and zealots lose 25%, it's expensive but if the enemy is going to pull the boys it makes them basically useless.
Marc, awesome videos I’m a huge fan. Wanted to float a series idea for you: swarm host to GM… I know you are a Terran at heart but I think it would be a fun and obscure unit for you to make shine, plus you can prove you are a great all around player running the ladder with Zerg
Opponent: bg lucky Uthermal: bad game, lucky, hahaho, all right, sure, if that's your opinion... Epic response, made me laugh... That opponent clearly didn't notice that he got completely out-micro'd in every engagement...
This was a really strong episode of the series, meme strategy + rush + static defense is a rare combination but very satisfying to watch play out. I'm catching back up through the backlog of this series while it's still relatively new, and I had to stop and comment here since it was so good.

You did a move in ep4 with reapers supporting the planetary landing, I really liked that. I thought about that too before I saw it, it's really really cool. I think you could maybe also pull a few scvs to load into the CC for repair micro.
Your games are awesome! You're mixin your strats like a skillful bartender. Haven't played for quite a while, but watching your series with an unbelievable interest. And it's not only the game, it's your comments that makes its so great!

Marc you are really getting a lot better, watching your videos from the start, you gameplay and ability to make builds are amazing and you have improved a lot. If you run into problems with the PF2GM, you should maybe as challenge go ghosts with PF or marauder ? You should make a composition depending on the race of your opponent, ghosts against Zerg and maybe raven against Protoss, together with the PF ? Thank you for making these amazing videos, very fun to watch and learn from :)
You are part lion, part surgeon. Imagine an elephant being attacked by the pride and as they are chewing him to pieces, they are explaining the details of the anatomy and what cuts of meat taste the best.
Cant afford a computer and played the starcraft2 campaign once. been watching this duuude uThermal for the past month. keep it up man! You are getting noticed my guy!
I think it makes sense to build spines. He figures you are gonna keep your troops near the PF to protect it and to keep them safe, so he builds spines to deter you from attacking just whenever you want to. Gives him more time (more APM) to do other stuff because you can't just poke in with a few hellions every five seconds, and gives him a bit more time to get in position if a full push does come from you. Edit: Well I was assuming he wasn't just gonna try to break it head-on. I thought he was buying time for mass mutas or some other air or siege strategy.
Didn't realize hellions could flame up to high ground. It makes sense when I think about it as a board game with pieces, but I thought they couldn't. You learn something new every day.
Bro. You made me start sc2 again, I was master back then, now playing in Diamond 2, gotta get back to my old level ahah. (It makes me rage like crazy to get cheesed tho, that was not the case 10y ago 😂🙄) Anyway, thank you and keep it up!
If you go cyclones, keep some scv's permanently with you on autocast. I peel off the ones that are down on energy, and keep them behind the line of actual control, and treat it as a repair bay. It ends up snowballing.
39:50: "I don't think it was lucky, I think my strategy was epic. Let's be real though, I'm not sure this strategy was good... I think we got a bit lucky" I don't know what to believe anymore!
First, thanks for the awesome content. Somehow watching agadmator chess analysis brought me here. I had an idea for a challenge, or a couple of challenges: 1. How far can you advance if you are limited to no more than four of each unit (not counting workers)? What about three limit? Two? One? You'd be a real silly goose to have such a diverse army, I'm curious how it would go. Thanks again, I've subscribed and really enjoy your channel!
2nd game review. First I thought you were going to walk away from planetary, thinking about it. PF is bait, lines up zergs in a line for a good hellion in line shot. Forces Zerg into panic mode, leaving hatchery to go into main as the kill move, timing excellent. Finishing queens doesn’t allow heal or injects. Hellions come out faster than Zerg lol. Only meta I would add is move PF next to hatchery because your too busy continually attacking into main. Bring up more scvs or make more. That’s if Zerg countered properly.
I watch these and get anxiety thinking about how I’m going to remember all of these details of what I need to know to out play each race knowing darn well I haven’t played SC2 since 2013 and I will never be playing again.
Hi Marc, you asked something about video length. I love watching your videos while I ride my bike. Longer is better for me. I will watch up to an hour maybe more. Not sure how long other people like to watch. Wish you the best.
I'd like to add a new addition to the build: when ever you start the PF or maybe when they see it for the first time, you drop a Salt Cannon catch phrase in the chat to your opponent. "You've been Salt Cannoned" or something like that ;)
What happens if your opponent gets ventral sacs or medivacs or prisms and expands by transporting workers and defensive units? And/or harasses with early drops on your bases?
Marc: we won cause we got lucky. They had bad build order Score board: when we gunna see someone with good build order then? Feeling pretty lucky sitting 18-0
This is probably a stupid question but it seems like the right place to ask it: is there any value in faking an early cc build into pf rush? Let them scout the cc building in your natural, then pick it up and fly it across the map after they go home, building an e-bay in the meantime. Not only will they be tricked into thinking you are playing macro, but it will be hilarious if they come for a run-by to find the natural empty and a pf building next to their main.
No, he's at a level now where people know how to scout. Either they see that his CC is later than 1:43 so they know that something is up or it's not and they think he's playing macro... because he is. At least build order wise, so then he doesn't have the unit count to get the PF up. Not to mention that flying it across the map takes forever.
The speed of a flying cc is not helping with that. By the time it reaches the enemy we will be playing sc3. Jokes aside it's very slow and it worked against weaker players. But the higher you go the less likely it is to work. 1 second is enough of a difference to decide if it's a win or loss in starcraft. And cc flying across the map is a bit more than one second.
I don't think Protoss not using 2nd gate was a big blunder in this case. At that skill level it was a tricky mindgame which should work in the most cases - he knew that you know he is at 2 gates that early, so he assumed you won't even try to attack.
i wonder if researching "hi-sec autotracking" as soon as ebay finishes would be worth in some cases. It only takes 57 seconds and 7 range makes it even more awkward to break the contain.
Your strategy of building a PF in their base while harassing workers with hellions, reminds me of a fork in chess. He can't protect against both, and either outcome is pretty painful. I have no clue what the correct response is. We saw here how bad it was for him to lose nearly all of his workers, but letting the PF finish seems like it would have been gg for him as well. The only thing I could think to do would be to pull the probes to attack the CC, allowing him to keep the stalkers near them to defend against the hellions. I think a well executed PF rush, such as this, needs to be respected similarly to a cannon rush. If you don't treat it as the emergency that it is, then you either lose all your workers or one of your bases, just like with a cannon rush.
Marc can you help me understand what the point is of the ‘bong cloud’ build? I don’t see it being strategic or confusing? I’m not being inconsiderate, just wondering what the purpose is. Thanks! Edit: spelling
I'm sure he explained it a bit more at the start of the series, it is just to kind of mimic the chess opening move of the same name where you move your king forward in the first moves of the game...
