Do We Regret Moving to Tennessee? *8 month update*

  • After living in Nashville Tennessee for 8 months and experiencing 3 out of 4 seasons, we thought it'd be fun to explore if we have any regrets about moving to Tennessee.
We went through our first Tennessee summer and experienced the humidity. Either it wasn't that bad or we're just a couple of Zonies used to 115 degree summers so high 80s was a treat for us. We'll see what summer number 2 brings.
How are tornadoes in Tennessee? Scary! We went through our first one of those too. We experienced a beautiful Tennessee fall and who woulda thunk it snowed here too.
Tennessee is truly one of the most beautiful places to live.
Gondola ride was at Anakeesta in Gatlinburg!

Well I’m born and raised here in my beautiful Tennessee and I want to first and foremost welcome one and all … my family goes back generations here before Tennessee was even a state .. I live in the eastern side and you folks want to see beauty well y’all need to see East of Knoxville.. all around is beautiful scenery and good folks to boot .. now we are a red state and will gladly tell you how we like our living to stay.. just saying.. lots of good Christian folks and that is what I mainly want to tell y’all.. please come but please please don’t try and change us to what you folks ran here to get away from .. we have churches on just about every street corner and love our hometown street parties for fun but clean wholesome fun now .. I know our country is changing and not for the good . But no matter with a warm Tennessee welcome with some southern hospitality will certainly be given as long as it’s warranted.. much love and hugs come one come all but leave your whatever state you’re leaving pretty please..

The housing market used to be affordable, but it's insanely high right now. While I welcome everyone moving here, it's partly the reason the housing market has become so unaffordable. You can't compete with people moving here from other states who make a profit selling their homes and are paying cash. Houses are gone as soon as their listed. My daughter and her fiancé are wanting a home of their own, but they can't afford it sadly. 10 years ago they wouldn't have had a problem.
When I was young, I remember Tennessee and other southern states were made fun of by the rest of the US. I couldn't travel anywhere without someone commenting on my southern accent. I was in California when I was a teen and some kids asked me why I wasn't wearing overalls and a straw hat. Now, we are in the top 10 states people moved to in 2021. WOW

My wife and I moved to Knoxville from Orange County, CA last October, so we were able to experience the tail end of Fall and LOVED IT. Winter has been an adventure, but being in Knoxville we don't get as severe weather like the West side of the state since we are up against the Smokies, but we have also loved every minute of it! We have enjoyed doing excursions on the weekends when my wife doesn't work (she's a nurse) and have loved Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge along with civil war historical places. My wife and I are in the same boat in housing, we are currently in an apartment and hopefully inventory will open up in the spring so we can pounce on one. We moved here from CA to take a step back and breathe from the high stress you get there and our stress levels have significantly dropped since moving here. Not that it's totally gone, but it is so much less. People are nicer, food is great and the atmosphere of seeing the beautiful trees everywhere you go makes it for a relaxing place!

FYI - I work at Hometown Lenders in Franklin TN, but there are companies that will pay cash for the house you want, and then turn around and sell it to you. They will turn you into a cash buyer. One company I do work with is Ribbon Home. They will pay cash for the house, you rent to from them for 1-3 months, then they sell it back to you for the same price. It's a great way to combat all the cash buyers in our market and allows you to get your dream home without worrying about a finance contingency. Look them up, or message me, and review their details but they are pretty straight forward. The housing market is crazy all across the US, but even more so here in Tennessee with everyone wanting to move here. I am glad y'all like it here so far and hope you find your dream home! Good luck!

We moved to East Tennessee after giving Florida 3 years (did not like the flat lands, hurricanes, alligators or extreme heat) We had to moved FL from 20 years in Southern California for work. Originally from Wisconsin. We absolutely love Eastern Tennessee and are looking to plant roots but as you said, the housing market is out of sight right now. I expect in a few years when things settle down, we will find something affordable. In the meantime we are leasing a house in an amazing historic community near the University of Tennessee. You are correct, there is so much to do, see and eat. History, museums, hiking, fishing, golf, outdoor activities, parks, the Great Smoky Mountains, music BBQ, dining out doors, and so much more. We absolutely love the 4 seasons. In fact, we experienced our first magical snowfall on our first Christmas here. It was beautiful enough to make us cry. The people here are so sweet and respectful. We grew an awesome garden of 36 different fruits & vegetables. We enjoyed riding our Harley along the ocean and all over the Central Coast hills from Santa Barbara to Paso Robles. Sadly, the landscaped changed to more cannabis grows w/ hoop houses, the economy tanked making the cost of living impossible to stay. We are so happy to have made this dramatic move. We love the smooth roads, especially on the Smoky Mountain Parkway. The history around here is beautifully highlighted in the outstanding museums such as the Sam Houston Historic Schoolhouse, the Museum of Appalachia, and Cades Cove Museum. I'm sure Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge are great places to visit but the traffic seems to be overwhelming so we stay away.

I also have all the same questions you guys had and still have. I plan on moving in 1-2 years. I will be 50 years old in 2026 so new live for me at age 50 and new location. I want to travel and experience so much new stuff on East coast since I have experienced everything on west coast already. I will be moving more towards Knoxville and Chattanooga area for I want less hustle and bustle instead of all the business here in Phoenix. Thanks I will watch more of your videos as weeks to come. You are correct lots of realtor videos.

You know I've been to Tennessee twice, from Indiana. Between there and Florida I feel were the places that I felt most at home. Both have such welcoming people and it's pretty easy to spark conversations with strangers. And in my opinion, Tennessee is more beautiful of a state, because the mountains and sheer amount of wilderness there is amazing. I'm a nature person and a house somewhere out in the mountains actually sounds like paradise, but I'd be pretty lonely lol. And the bears are awesome, it feels like they're almost just part of society here the way I seen so many that wander around town.
If only I wasn't 21 with no money or no clue what i wanna do with my life or no one to do it with. But I still watch these videos, just sucks that I have no clue what i'd be happy doing with my life to make enough money to go where I want. I like making music but until that takes off I feel like I'm a slave to this boring flat cornfield infested nowhere land that only prevails at factory work and farming. And then once u do tht u get stuck in the same area paycheck to paycheck like everyone else. So confused man. Hope I can one day find out what to do with my life so I can move somewhere like Tennessee or wherever like you guys. It's depressing, but thx for the video this content helps me feel better at least.

Keep your head up and believe in yourself. hopefully one day as a people we can help each other actually get to the places we all would like each other to be. the industry jobs are destroying our world. it’s very scary. I’m right here with you bro. Except I’m 25 with in reality, not a whole lot of money and no clue where I’m going to move to. you’re not the only one out here with the same things on your mind. Trust me. A lot of people are really struggling. I hope someday things can change, and people will charge less, pay more, and overall care more. Blessings to you and your family and friends bro. I've lived in East Tennessee all of my life. You're right, it isn't as humid as everyone says. Although it's strange the longer your body adjusted to Tennessee humidity the worse it will get. Now you may be sitting outside when it's 88 degrees with 60% humidity and be thinking it isn't that bad hot. But in a few years you will be in the same situation and you'll be saying... OH MY GOD IT'S HOT! 🤣. Winter is strange here also. The snow is very random. One year northern east Tennessee may get 2 or 3 storms maybe average about 3 inches of snow per storm while the southern portion of east Tennessee may not get anything... Next year could be the opposite lol. In my opinion spring and fall aren't very long seasons here. It is more or less winter or summer for the majority of the year.

Umm... Raised in New England move to Arizona (Maricopa county) . And now to East Tennessee. Been here for a little over a year and the observations I have made are very poor health care. People really don't want to work. Having vehicles repaired or any type of service done takes a while. The scenery is beautiful but it's only for a very short time. Whereas in Arizona it's pretty consistent weather (warm and half the year really damn hot). Arizona though is very diverse with scenery. After a while of being here Believe it or not you miss the sun. It can get gloomy here especially during the winter months. And the weather is seriously erratic. It's hard to plan a trip sometimes because you just don't know what it's going to do. I think that was the biggest reason why I left New England. The only things I don't miss about Arizona is HOAs and how crowded it's becoming. It's unfortunate that there was so much influx of Californians and other very liberal states that It's now a political nightmare. I'm praying that don't happen to Tennessee.

Ancestry is kind of hilarious. We are from Illinois originally. Moved to NC and lived there 30 years, retired to TN, even though our family (still stuck in the Midwest) hollered at us to "come home!"
I always considered myself an Illinoisan because my ancestors had been there since the 1830s. Once I began researching my family tree, I found that our homes in North Carolina; now Tennessee; were close (like next county over) to the sites of ancestors who took the path of immigration from Virginia to Tennessee to Kentucky and then Illinois. So, we told family "we DID move home!"😁

Just two hours ago, I was driving on White Bridge Road from Harding Pike in SW Nashville en route to Trader Joe's. While stopped at the red light at Post Road, there were two cars in front of me in the two lanes, two cars behind me in the two lanes, and a sweet Mercedes adjacent to me. The cars in front of me had California and New York license plates. The cars behind me had Texas and Florida license plates. When the Mercedes raced past me because her lane was moving faster, I noticed she had Illinois plates. There's no need to wonder why a midday commute that used to take 12-15 minutes to make now takes 25-30 minutes, and why a trip at 3 PM to the airport that used to take 25-30 minutes can take as much as an hour and a half now. Of course, TJs was already out of almost half of my grocery list, because the population increase here commands that a new grocery store open about every 6 or 7 weeks, which does not happen.

My wife, son and I just got back to Arizona from Tennessee yesterday. We drove a uhaul truck for my parents to Chattanooga and we stayed there for 2 weeks to look around and help them find a house. They're still hunting, and having a heck of a time, but they'll get something eventually! We miss Tennessee tremendously already! We're hoping to move there as well, within the next month or two.
Also, I'm new to y'all's page, just stumbled acrossed it today. I know y'all are from AZ, but what part?? We're currently in Lake Havasu City, just hopefully not for long!! 🤙🏻

Fun to hear "real people" experience! Nashville/Franklin are particularly good in TN so it would be good to hear from folks who've moved to other parts of the state --it's rather LOOOONG so I'd hazard a guess that Memphis area is different from central TN (so, Nashville) and Northeast TN.

Lol! We're not too well versed outside of Middle Tennessee but hopefully people like Amanda who also live here and love it can share their experience! Everyone seems to say Chattanooga is more beautiful than middle TN area but we've never been. The Smokies are awesome! I've met one person who grew up in Memphis and he enjoyed it, but loves Middle TN more.

We fell in love with the Green & Clean & ALL the Wide Open Spaces(land) there was. It has grown quite a bit since 20 years ago… but the State as a whole is still LOVELY. Also coming from Southern California… We Deeply appreciated the slower pace and the hospitality(kindness/friendliness) we constantly encountered… not to mention the southern accents☺️
Our kids were 4 & 8 and the school system was VERY family orientated and respectful to parents. It’s been a few decades and unfortunately some things have changed and aren’t as “small town” as when we arrived. However Franklin TN is still a very special place to live and we’re still here. We do experience all 4 seasons but it does rain all throughout the year. The heaviest rain is during the summertime though. Hope this helps!

You must check out the Olive Branch Ms area! It's just across the Tennessee/Mississippi line (Memphis). Talk about variety of homes, 1 acre lawns, beautiful scenery, laid back. Went from 2000 in 94 to 60000 today. Conservative politics, law and order, great dining everywhere. Close to Beale St and casinos. Wonderful music, museums, history, low crime. 2 months of winter, spring is awesome, fall is so nice, summer is summer! Memphis in May! festival!!

My family is contemplating a move to Knoxville from Phoenix right now. We have made 2 visits in the past 6 months. I fell in love with E TN and the incredible beauty. We grew up in OH, so we know about 4 seasons (and how harsh they can be), but E TN winters appear to be much nicer and milder by comparison, especially with snow melting only a few days after it has fallen! I would be all about actual changing seasons (vs. nice, hot, hotter, and I'm melting heat) as I do miss those changes, especially fall. Were you both native to AZ, and what drew you to TN?

    • @joescheiman
      @joescheiman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Biow3apon My in-laws are hillbillies, grew up in Virginia and West Virginia. Maybe that is part of the draw? I understand frustrations, but prices are being driven up everywhere regardless. It has become a national problem due to massive businesses now buying up all the real estate as commodities. We just want the best quality of life for our children and Eastern Tennessee is very attractive to us for that aspect.

Hey Joe! Better late than never, right? Sorry for such the delay. Are you still contemplating making the move? We weren't native to AZ - I'm from southern California, but lived in AZ for 10 years. Melissa is from NJ but lived in AZ for 7 years. We we're drawn to the change of pace and the beautiful scenery. It feels so much more enjoyable and calm living out here. Sounds weird, but just can't explain it. So much green and so many trees. Way prettier than where we were in Phoenix AZ in our opinion. Definitely one of the best decisions we've made.
