I know the omnibus collectors really wanted a "Man of Steel" omnibus, but I have to tell you I am in love with this small chunk package of about 19 issues for $50. If I can have 2 or 3 equally lovely books on my shelf in the future, I will be highly satisfied. This is a nice introduction and beginning to the Byrne era, with a sturdy but light feel to the physical book. A glossy cover and dust jacket on the outside, with a nice matte paper and 80s-reminiscent coloring on the inside. It feels comfortable and readable in my hand, which will make it a lot easier to read than my 1200-page Fourth World style "omnibu."

Absolutely, if the quality had been there I may have purchased but no way am I buying this garbage. I am to the point where I buy almost nothing from DC.
I understand your dissatisfaction at this not being an omnibus and I would have liked it to be as well but this book is def for me. I had a couple of these issues when I was a kid and I was never able to complete the story. I’ve read so much about John Byrnes influence on Superman from his miniseries to now and I’ll never forget his design of Joe El and Lara and Clark taking Lana for a flight to reveal his powers to her. Not to mention that the art is top 5 best ever to put Superman on paper. I preordered this with Grand Design X Men and because I chose for both to be shipped together, who know when I’m going to get it since Grand Design was pushed back a few weeks.
Not sure what the hell is wrong with DC to decide NOT making this an omnibus.. I mean seriously.. it's a fail on their part. I mean they could've at least made it a deluxe edition 😭 Is there still hope after the standard hardcovers are all released?? 😭😭
For a few months DC was soliciting for omnibuses and then turning around and cancelling them. In one of his last appearances at a consumer/customer presentation before his firing Dido explained the reason for the cancelling of the omnibuses was the minimum number required to justify a printing was not there but many of the titles would be released in some form other than an omnibus. Maybe if the hardcover collections sell enough then there will be an omnibus.
WOW all 4 of those images on the book and the inside covers are just ICONIC SUPERMAN pics and iconic Byrne pics. This also reminds me of my childhood and especially anything 80’s John Byrne definitely brings the memories....Gorgeous but damn why not at least make it a deluxe edition friggin DC and GLUED BINDING?!?! WTF?!
I like the design and type of paper used for the book. It's quite light and so practical to read compared to the omnibuses which to me are more towards collectibles and for shelf displays.
I got my copy of this last Saturday. I'd much rather have had an omni too, but this is a handsome book, and the material collected is mostly wonderful. I never cared about Superman until this run either, and Byrne made me a fan for many years. I hope enough people get this for the series to continue at least. Take care everyone.
I picked it up right on the release date and I couldn't be happier. Now I'm impatiently waiting for the colume 2, and hope for further volumes. Great review btw! Cheers.
You're voice and tone speaks volumes Omar regarding OHC/Omni (which i totally agree with) but for those on the fence and have never read the series or prefer this format, its an absolute purchase. Some of the best comicbook storytelling and seminal work on the Superman character. You're content review is spot on.
That’s the build I was expecting. I’m waiting for the omnibus but will pick this up if I can get it for 50% off or more. I don’t know why DC think we want this format. The Byrne WW run is in the same format. Correct me if I’m wrong but it’s Also strange that the only Byrne Omni at DC is Doom Patrol.
I have all the trades, so as this HC isn't a deluxe version, I'm not prepared to "upgrade" as it really isn't an upgrade IMO. What I'm REALLY waiting on is the next omnibus that comes after Exile, that should take us through up to the "Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite" saga. I don't know if DC ever plans on doing another omni, but they bloody well should!
I'm so torn. Selling books can be difficult in EU, so jumping on this and having an omni maybe solicited later on.... But, I also really want to read this run. :(
This was an instant buy for me: I grew up on Byrne’s work and I missed out on some of these issues. Flipping back through some of the original issues I noticed the coloring from DC was horrible back in the day on the old newsprint: blotchy red skin tones and muddy colors. The re-coloring alone is worth the cost.
This brings back some memories. I grew up in the 70's having read occasional silver and Bronze Age books, but I didn't discover the direct market until just before Crisis so I was on board for that and everything afterwards I remember the miniseries well and then the relaunch of the Superman books. I even sent in the card in those first issues to get a chance of getting a limited copy of the Man Of Steel miniseries bound into a TPB, well sort of. They took the original issues, sliced off the spine and glue bound it in a yardstick cover that had the miniseries cover logo and a grid background. I haven't revisited this since reading the original issues, but I like the idea of how they collected this volume in publishing order, which would make it convenient to read. It is in my opinion the best reboot of the characters in the universe up to date and I have many warm memories of this period.
This is the run that got me in to comics, such great stuff. Shame it’s not an omnibus but I take what I can get. I have my copy already from Amazon, but I think it represents a quadruple dip for me. Strange to start over from the beginning rather than continue the trades at volume 10 though
I preordered this with the expectation of it being oversized. Such a shame that it’s not. But as I’ve never ready this before, I’m still super excited. And I got it for cheap!
Enjoyed the video. Brought back some good memories of early days of collecting. The Man of Steel came out in 86 not 91 cause I was in high school at the time.
I actually own the 9 volumes in trade, but as a huge Superman fan and collector, the temptation to get this is real. Would you say it was worth upgrading to these collections from the trade paperbacks? I don't really collect in omnibus format, so I was heartbroken when they cancelled the Man of Tomorrow collections and opted for the Exile and Other Stories omnibus to follow the Man of Steel trades, but I picked that up regardless.
It looks very cool I started collecting comi s last year right know I am starting to realy complete the siries ( knight fall is wat I am busy with know ) but I think i will pic up this book just two read and add To my colection ! And as a pauze of completing my comic siries but a realy realy cool book
I’m disappointed this is not an Omni too. I would like to believe sales will be strong enough that maybe in two or three years, they might still do one. Meantime, it’s Byrne Supes. You were far more eloquent than I, but this... this is the run. From here to the wedding, it’s just every inch something worth having, same as Batman from Year One to NML. Get it, read it, treasure it. And maybe be like me. Whenever you are down, discouraged, beaten, disappointed, there is always a hope. Just look... up in the sky.
Why would sales be strong? I love the work but I’m not going to buy a book with garbage binding and paper, send a message to DC by voting with your wallet.
@@bclayj That’s a fair point. If it’s not what you want, you have other options - the trades, digital and so on. But beware cutting your nose off to spite your face: they could just as easily see poor sales as reason not to continue and cancel after two volumes. Your decision, beware of consequences.
Matthew Periolat DC is doing the cutting, not me. They can cancel it after one volume for all I care, I’m not going to buy their shitty book. If they want my money they need to put out a quality product, end of story. And if enough people tell them that, they will stop putting out junk.
I must buy this, because I grew up with this, and I love Byrne, but what DC did with this book, the glued binding and the normal sized hc, it's a piece of sheat!
I’ve really been looking forward to this coming out. A little disappointed in the format but still looks great! I would love to see this go all the way to the Death of Superman. The tail end of this and the Death of Superman were the stories I grew up with. I love that sweet nostalgic feel!
I so wanted an omni in this. However, I am going to purchase it anyway. Even though it does not have sewn binding. This may be the best we get for awhile. Love the content!
As much as I'm a Bryne fan(I Loved his stuff on F4, She-Hulk), I surprisingly haven't read this. So yeah; I'm picking this up, alongside Grell's Green Arrow Omnibus. Great work as always, Omar.
got mine today with venomnibus vol 2 would have loved an omnibus as well beautiful cover art and dust jacket, a bit of advice uncanny omar have you seen the spectre bronze age omnibus ? i am tempted but not sure dont know a great deal about the spectre ?
I was definitely hoping for the Omnibus. I have all 9 trades. I’m completely baffled by this decision. We got a exile Omnibus but not a Omnibus of this? This run of Superman by Byrne is equal to: Green Lantern by Johns Green Arrow by Grell Aquaman by Peter David Wonder Woman by Perez Justice League by Morrison Swamp Thing by Moore I would be ok if it was at least a deluxe size HC. Awesome review. Can't believe I finally have this in-hand. It's a real shame that DC didn't make this a deluxe hardcover. Your custom bound omnis are really nice.
So frustrating. Hate to admit I actually impulse bought this, because at least you've got better paper and some actual design work and care put into them compared to the older trades which are a bit more barebones. With all the AT&T/WB/DC news recently, I got frustrated/bored and basically made a giant list of every run of significance that DC has never reprinted or that is out of print. My custom bind plans were already disproportionately DC due to their haphazard collected editions efforts, but now my horizons for them have expanded. And Superman is the biggest character with HUGE swaths of uncollected material, so I guess I gotta hit the dollar bins...
so does glue binding fall apart alot more then sewn binding? i bought this and it seems like they tried to make this cheaply made and priced it higher then normal or am i wrong?
This Superman was my very first DC comic, I remember picking up from the bookseller on a train station. How many volumes will be there of John's Superman?
I just ordered the book, it would've been cool if it was an omni or at least a deluxe edition, but either way, I'm a huge Superman fan so it was a must. I used to watch the Superman animated series as a kid, Smallville, all the reeves movies, so I'm hyped. I just ordered it with some of my bday money from a few weeks ago, I'm excited to read it. I've only read a few issues from my uncles' collection and I loved what I read.
That custom omnibus with that cover looks beautiful. Wish I had it. Anyway, thanks for reviewing this item. I may pick it up myself, but I'm hoping an omnibus will be released one day.
So just a quick comment. Did anyone else ever find the image on the back cover with Superman holding his cape a little odd? It just always bugged me. And what are some definitive John Byrne Superman images because a John Byrne Superman statue has never been produced.
This is really sad :/ But Omar, do you mind doing a video on ALL your custom bindings? They look really interesting and I would love to see why they mean something to you!
I just remembered I used to own that issue 1 when I was a wee lad. Didn't know how awesome the run is back then and I gave it away. Silly youth! Nevertheless, I'm getting the book for sure :D
Hey Omar I am confused, maybe you know better, Uncanny X-men omnibus 2 is scheduled for November on Amazon. Do you know when it will available in places like IST and CGN?
Of course I wish these were over-sized and I'll likely still pick this up, the only thing holding me back is the fear of this run being orphaned. Looking at my Lucifer Vol 1, that's my major fear with DC books right now.
Omar, I'm a new follower coming over from print novels and coming back into the fold of comics. I'm a Batman, Hulk, and Spiderman fan. A quick question, I see you have custom bound editions, who is your go-to for custom binding these days? I'd like to have some of my own collection bound as well. Thanks for all your work, I really enjoy seeing your earlier stuff, esp the reading order of Batman & Hulk...
I felt the same way about John Byrne's run on Wonder Woman being collected in regular HC format. At least give us a deluxe HC with sewn binding. Oh well, hopefully we will get the omnibus treatment for all of John Byrne's stuff at DC like we already got with his Doom Patrol run. Until then, I will buy the HC's, since I never had these in physical copy growing up in the 80's and 90's. I am grateful that we get this stuff printed at all. I remember a time when the only way to read comics was to hunt down the back issues. Remember folks, we have it good right now.
Omar bro pls reply pls pls 🙏🙏. I am starting my cpllection of marvel and i am thinking to buy this edition and vol 2 of this to start my collection . I am getting for 30 dollars each. Should i go ahead?
@@NearMintCondition ok bro. So nice of u to reply 😍. I am getting both of the volumes. Just wished if this would be a sewn binding rather than glued. But who knows maybe 3rd volume comes in sewn. Rest all i like in these volumes
These need to go all the way upto the wedding that happened in 1998, at least, but I doubt it will. They'll probably stop after 3 or 4 of these, sadly.
I actually picked this up. I'm a Byrne fan, so it was hard to pass up. An omnibus would have been a lot better though. However, with all that's been happening at DC regarding the Lay-offs I'm more forgiving and, honestly, more sympathetic to those who lost their jobs.
I just ordered this yesterday on Instocktrades for $25. I was excited about the omnibus and it sucks that they cut it in half and shrunk it down with a different binding (I'm assuming that an omni would have been sewn). This was still a "beggars can't be choosers" situation since this is still cheaper than getting the trades. I hope they release enough to reach the Exile omnibus.
I don't really care if Omnibus or not, what I would have liked is, more effort put into this book! I have just received it today as well by the way and it feels a little cheap, as you said, glued, the title printing on the spine of the book for me is slightly over on the back cover and just plane paper pages, same like the 9 TPBs which you have also mentioned..... I completely agree though that these are the best Superman stories and art there is! In Hungary they have also started with this series Superman and I have enjoyed every issue! I have already re ordered Vol. 2!
Hey Omar, I have a question if you don’t mind. You know how you stretch the spine of an omnibus? What else do you stretch? Oversized hardcovers? Compendiums? Big hardcovers? Or just omnibus’s? Great episode/review.
I was disappointed that the omnibus was cancelled, however I still purchased this, it’s what got me Interested in Superman. I would like DC to know there is a demand for Superman
I'll continue to wait for an Omnibus version. Never read those stories... I got into comics after the Death and Return of Superman, so I bought that Omnibus and the Exile Omni. Really want an Omnibus of the John Byrne run.
I bought this and I’m speaking with my $ to DC in hopes that they still make these into Omnis after all the hard covers are released. Even if this is their game plan all along to release Omnis after these HCs to get more money out of us in this one instance I will be elated to double dip and get the Omnis after and gift the HCs to a friend or Family Member to get them hooked as well. Perfect review Omar on this book!

Sadly not yet.
About two to three weeks earlier
@@NearMintCondition ok thanks
Of course I wish these were over-sized and I'll likely still pick this up, the only thing holding me back is the fear of this run being orphaned. Looking at my Lucifer Vol 1, that's my major fear with DC books right now.
We’re up to volume 3 with volume 4 solicited for around the beginning of 2022.
Welcome aboard! I used Houchen In the past. Part four of Batman reading order is coming out next week :)
1:42, top right middle panel...supes being sneaky
Yes! been waiting for this video, thank you! So disappointed that it's not and omni or even a deluxe, why DC, why?
And for the 100th time, thanks for the videos
For the 100th time. Thank you so much for the kind words.
Man I ordered this yesterday I thought it was a OHC well I am still excited to read it!
We do have it good now.
Hi omar, where i can get that custom omnis? Who did it have some on sale?
Nobody on sale. I had it done. Mapped it out and then Houchen bound the book.
@@NearMintCondition oh ok, look so nice, a shame that dc dont made the omni of this one like yours
Omar bro pls reply pls pls 🙏🙏. I am starting my cpllection of marvel and i am thinking to buy this edition and vol 2 of this to start my collection . I am getting for 30 dollars each. Should i go ahead?
I got you my dood. So 30 dollars each is a good deal for these books.
@@NearMintCondition ok bro. So nice of u to reply 😍. I am getting both of the volumes. Just wished if this would be a sewn binding rather than glued. But who knows maybe 3rd volume comes in sewn. Rest all i like in these volumes
@@mohammadvahid2441 Much love. Volume 3 comes out in June.
Great video Omar, personally for me I'll be stinking with my paperbacks I still hold hope we will get the omni's even if its five years from now.
that's actually not bad for me....do you think there will be 2 or 3 volumes, overall?
2 is solicited. So I hope there is more.
Hey Omar, I have a question if you don’t mind. You know how you stretch the spine of an omnibus? What else do you stretch? Oversized hardcovers? Compendiums? Big hardcovers? Or just omnibus’s? Great episode/review.
It looks awesome. I want it.
I was disappointed that the omnibus was cancelled, however I still purchased this, it’s what got me Interested in Superman. I would like DC to know there is a demand for Superman
Do you know if there'll be a reprint of the Death and Return of Superman omnibus?
I'll continue to wait for an Omnibus version.
Never read those stories... I got into comics after the Death and Return of Superman, so I bought that Omnibus and the Exile Omni. Really want an Omnibus of the John Byrne run.
God, I preordered this book so long ago. So glad to be getting it sometime next month finally. I wish this virus hadn’t pushed back shipping times.
where can i get the omni you compared it to??
I bought this and I’m speaking with my $ to DC in hopes that they still make these into Omnis after all the hard covers are released. Even if this is their game plan all along to release Omnis after these HCs to get more money out of us in this one instance I will be elated to double dip and get the Omnis after and gift the HCs to a friend or Family Member to get them hooked as well. Perfect review Omar on this book!
