Is Katie Ledecky's Reign OVER?!

  • After 13 years of 800m Freestyle dominance, starting when she was just 14 years old, Katie Ledecky has finally lost, and to none other than Canadian wunderkind Summer McIntosh.
    At the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships meet in Orlando, 17 year old Summer McIntosh, swam an incredible 8:11.39, beating Ledecky by nearly 6 seconds.
    But what does this result really mean in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics? Will we see a battle of the ages soon?

      Summer won't necessarily even swim the 800 so it might be a moot point. It may conflict too much with her other events. So we may not get the showdown we all want to see.

    I think Ledecky was in her prime at the 2016 Olympics. The 10 year age gap is starting to catch up with her. Fully rested, Summer may take it in Paris if she chose to swim. Between racing the 200IM and 800Free, I would hope that she would lean more towards the 800.

      When recording this video we very much thought there’s no chance Summer picks the 800 Free over the 200 IM, but it does feel like a genuine tough choice now

    The problem with Ledecky is you never truly know with her...like at the last Olympics she was almost 5 seconds slower than Titmus in the 400 leading to the Olympics and then she ended up putting her second fastest 400m freestyle which I didn't think was possible...in the 800m however it's a whole different scenario. And in this case at the Paris, the event is at the end of the program just a day before the end....so non of them will be fresh, but if it happens it will be a bloodbath.

      100% don't doubt her on the Olympic stage!
      NGL we are really hopeful that we get to see a fully rested 800m free head to head between the two of them because the time drops could be nuts, much like how the 400m Free has gone over recent years!

      @@PropulsionSwimming I have a feeling Summer might not swim the 800. The load will be too much for her. And she's a very important figure in the Canadian relays. Maybe she could pull a Janet Evans the 400m free, 400m IM and the 800. Who knows.

      Watched Katie swim the 800 at trials last summer. Vintage Ledecky smooth powerful rhythmic and 4 seconds faster than summers swim last week. She looked off her rhythm and tired but not surprising since she is 26 and in the midst of heavy training.
      no question Summer is a great talent but Ledecky still loves what she does and hopefully will be in top form for the Olympics.

    I'd mortgage the house on Summer winning in a head to head with both swimmers in peak form. Summer is only getting better while Katie is on the decline. You can't beat the effects of time, every athlete no matter how great has to eventually hand the torch to the next generation, just as a decade from now Summer will have to and Katie is now.

    2× 400frees, 2×400Ims, 3×200m butterfly, 1 or 2× 4×100m free, 1 or 2×800free relays and 2×200m IM or 2×800m freestyles
    God it's so tiring to imagine, though she's 17 so we'd expect her to recover quickly.

    As a casual observer ,why would the Olympic committee as well as the networks not want a closing swimming event of an 800 m final with three of the greatest female swimmers of our time to bookend with the 400 m event. Is changing the schedule that difficult ?

    • @PropulsionSwimming
      @PropulsionSwimming  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The olympic schedules tend to be set in stone a long way out from the games, regardless of which swimmers are racing which event. Interesting concept on whether the spectacle and end product could be increased by reorganising closer to the race date

    • @hazliadark-shepherd9558
      @hazliadark-shepherd9558 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Usually the schedule is crafted to help the host nation the best, hece why it was change not very long ago to make sure Leon Marchand would be able to swim all his predilection distances without being bothered by the tiredness of a past event the same day.

    I don't know if you have noticed that, but the Ledecky's kick was different in this 800m racing with Summer. When she was a very young swimmer, a 2 per 1 kick was sufficient to break a world record. In this 800m, however, she did a 6 per 1 kick and even so didnt reach Summer.

    • @PropulsionSwimming
      @PropulsionSwimming  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting! Still think it’s incredibly hard to compare anything just off this swim because it’s in season, it’s never the goal to swim fast here (even if summer has) but makes a compelling hypothetical fully rested though

    • @PropulsionSwimming
      @PropulsionSwimming  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's a really tough choice, the 200m IM field right now is looking stacked. Kate Douglass, Alex Walsh, Kaylee McKeown, Sydney Pickrem, Yu Yuting etc. just making a podium is gonna take sub 2:08, we think.

      There would be no events for Summer after the 800m Fr or 200m IM, both fall on the second to last day. Guess by the same logic it's how much her program before takes out of her before getting to this point in the meet.

    Mcintosh exels in swemming form than Ledecky, and so does Titmass. But of the 3, Titmass is the smoothest swimmer. I only wish she breathes more when swimming. Once in every 4 strokes is rediculous. Air is free.
