- Chicago P.D. is called after a patient who has been in a vegetative state for over five years is suddenly found pregnant.
Season 2 Episode 16 "Prisoner's Dilemma"
Dr. Manning treats a comatose patient who was sexually abused and is now pregnant, but later discovers that the patient has been in a paralyzed state after a suspected stroke. After an educational visit to a psychiatric facility, Dr. Reese finds one of the teens there has harmed herself as a means to see her and soon comes to believe the patient was wrongly admitted to the psychiatric facility. Also, Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Latham operate on a young girl who collapsed mid-flight while Dr. Choi, April, and Clarke treat the girl's mother, who has ingested balloons of cocaine.

I like how they kept the realistic detail of the doctor talking to the coma patient
They have to still still announce what they are doing despite the fact
I'm a nurse and I'll even talk to the bodies of my patients after they pass. It humanizes them for staff and the family. I would do the same for someone in a coma
Juar because a person can't communicate or resist doesn't make them any less human.
some coma patients have reported hearing the voices of there doctors so they may say it so reassure them ?

@@alcoholandfun243 euthanasia should be legal, so if it is an irreparable brain injury or terminal illness the patient can decide if conscience or a tribunal of doctors and guardians should be allowed to stop unnecessary suffering.
Imagine if you lost your child and have lost all hope of having that child ever interact with you. Someone then tells you she can have a baby which is the last form of her you will ever interact with. It's a pretty normal choice to make especially since she isn't conscious

@@juliannedewitt4288 how is this pro life? They're choosing the life of a fetus that only exists because she was raped over the life of their daughter. They said the daughter could die during this pregnancy. As her medical proxy's her parents are supposed to make the best choices for her and they decided to kill her for a baby that might not survive the pregnancy anyway. Its selfish and cruel to both of them.
Because, despite the reason she is pregnant, or the risks of being pregnant while in a coma, the child is now a living being. Yes, they are risking their daughters life, and maybe they weren't thinking in those terms, maybe they were being selfish, but I don't think I could ever forgive my parents if they were to kill my child because they didn't want to risk my life. Any pregnancy comes with a risk.

For anyone wondering- later in the episode Maggie goes to do the patients nails while Natalie is in the room and the patients eyes open very briefly. Natalie refused to let it go until she had to sign the discharge paperwork. On here way to tell the parents she can go, a neurosurgeon asks Natalie to do another test. They opened the patients eyes and asked her to mole them up and down and she did so. It turned out that she was never in a coma. What had happened was she had a stroke which in turn caused her brain to stop sending the chemicals to the body or something. She was conscious the whole time. In time, the patient will have gained back some movement, and will have learnt to communicate through a computer. We do not find out in that episode who did it.

This happened to a woman in South Africa recently. Turns out a male nurse did it to her which was confirmed by DNA test after birth. They didn’t figure it out until the baby was almost full term. The parents took the baby and sued the sh... out of that care facility.
You find out latter that she is actually awake but is completely paralysed. Imagine having your parents talking about letting you die so that they can have a grandkid because they have given up on you. So sad 😢

Not surprised at all sadly. I'm Australian, and abuse of the disabled (like me) is an epidemic. It always has been. It's simply because awful people seek out those who are easiest to access, least likely to resist, and least likely to report what they did. It's extremely hard to stop because a lot of disability support is one on one. There are checks before employment, but that does not help much at all. We do need better oversight though eg aged care and child care places get audited regularly, whilst disability providers do not. Even when you report it (as I have) nothing is done. The fact that it's paid abysmally and not respected, thus meaning there are severe staff shortages, is also a major issue (they can't be choosy).
I am very sorry this has happened to you. Hope you have at least found your peace, if justice was unavailable.

I know it’s just a joke, but we really don’t change the way we treat people based on their insurance. The only difference would be certain procedures such as a surgery, dx test, etc (not the actual rendering of care)

I could never force anyone to have a child. Especially not my own daughter who was raped and is now carrying trauma and the child of the rapist with her. Never ever could I force her to continue to carry even more trauma with her. If she wants to have an abortion, I'll support her decision full-well knowing that she makes the decision thinking about the future of the baby and her own.

My ex boyfriend (who used to work in a hospital) did that to a comatose girl that was programmed to be taken off life support. He revealed this horrific fact 4 years into our relationship and when he saw my perplexed face he said "she was going to die in a few hours anyway".

Do you know what happens to patients like her? It's very ugly. Even if they aborted the baby she would do nothing but exist in a vegetative state being able to do nothing but waste away. This girl is never going to get up ever again and resume her life. If by some miracle she could regain consciousness she could never do anything for herself and still would be wasting away in some medical facility

They should legally be able to terminate without the consent of the parents/guardians. It’s not their body, they won’t have to suffer the consequences of the pregnancy. The doctors should be able to do what is best for the patient, which would be a termination.
The patient shouldn’t have to lose their life so that the pregnancy has a chance at living (as it’s not guaranteed that it will live)
Technically a doctor can open a case with the judge to remove their rights, if they believe they don't have the best interest of the patient.
They are guardians. That means they have a say over her body as she would have if she was awake. Do you also think that doctor should be able to force you into something that's against your will, even if it's the best decision for your health?
