This kind of reminds me of the difference between the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and the cartoon. Different interpretations of the same characters with a different style and tone - just a lot more different in this case. I kind of like the idea of there being an adult, kind of cyberpunk version of Mario and Luigi.
100%. It's funny how the movie vaguely adapted the games into something dark and gritty but also not serious at all then the comic very directly adapted that world into a more serious tone.
The President, King Koopa, shapeshifts into a reptillian at the end. Several scenes, mario holds up fungus to the screen. pretty much breaking the fourth wall, and says "always trust the fungus"
Honestly the fan comic would probably just end up as a free labour of love with a Patreon. That's about it. I'd love to see it continued but an artist needs to be paid to help. Maybe the new movie will reignite new found fans
I'm sure you know this this already, but they tried rebooting the sequel comic. In May of 2021 they released the first issue and it began where the movie ended...that's it. Nothing else has come of it :(
This movie is one of my guilty pleasures along side the He-Man movie, Howard the Duck, Gremlins 2, The Hole, Monster Squad and Flash Gordon. Movies so bad they're great.
As someone who grew up with the 1993 film and therefore, possesses an unbreakable nostalgic attachment… is it bad I would have preferred a sequel to the 1993 disasterpiece over the generic 2023 reboot?
@@captainet2457 not sure about buying them, but readcomicsonline.com has them. Or just Google "read super Mario bros movie comic" or something to that effect
I get that a lot of people didn't like this movie when it came out, hell when I rented it on VHS as a child, I didn't like it at first either. Then, I got it on DVD when I was in high school. For whatever reason, I kind of liked that it took a big departure from the games it was based on. Maybe it was because I finally got sick of the games feeling too samey with its formula, which I wish Nintendo would try to do more often. And they slowly are, even though they're still making bad business decisions along the way. I am aware of the version we almost got with Greg Beeman as director, and the tone feeling a little closer to the games, and that would've been interesting to see. It is a shame that version would never happen, because a certain film Beeman was working on around the same time bombed at the box office. But, I'm fine with the movie we did get, even if it's not what people wanted. Different does not equal bad, at least not always.
True. I love this movie for its overwhelming goofiness and camp. I don't think it would've worked too well to stick close to the games in live action, but now we have the best of both worlds.

I adore the sequel comic I wish it could be continued as I'm a dedicated fan of the 93 movie.
I heard that there was 3 planned movies that's why there is a sequel tease at the end of the movie
can you imagine

I'm sure they could do Patreon without running into legal issues. I hope they do someday.
Mario 1993 will always be one of my favorite movies it is honestly a good movie don't believe the hate.
I love it so much. It's just goofy and fun.
