Catching dinner from the ocean | 3 days solo camping on an island

- I get dropped at an island with lots of fur seals, setup camp around the back and catch yellowtail kingfish for dinner amongst the seals
Yellowtail kingfish ceviche is for dinner and it's 👌🏽👌🏽 hopefully I do ceviche some justice with my she'll be right style of making it.

The segment that features you eating has such an epic sunset in the background it looks like a Victorian landscape portrait .Brilliant! I noticed the seals were swimming fairly close to your catch. In California the sea lions will steal it right off of your line. Is that a problem there?
Great solo trip, nicely documented. I live down in Baja, Mexico... I paddle out to the Islands, camp and spearfish for my dinners. It is amazing good fun, occasionally gets exciting. This is what life is all about.

yeah, me too...maybe sea lions are worse than fur seals? they look the same to me, but he seemed awful chill about the whole thing...as opposed to when they were getting bitten off by sharks :)

Yellowtail is what we call them here in South Africa.I now start believing my wife.She always says Im crazy to stand in the sun for days on end fishing.I prefer to be called crazy over not fishing.Great shots.Keep it up.
Sometimes I wish I could be on a island by myself for two or three days or a month, all the comforts of home of course. LOL. Like food and a big bed and cabin. Not much for tent life! Lol. It would be nice to get completely away for a while, maybe two or three months. Lol I keep adding on time don't I. Wonderful video man. Loved it.

Oooooh i like this island, reminds me of wearing really dark glasses as a kid, awesome stuff :-) It didnt look that thick from the air ! The geology and structure is pretty cool steep cliifs. to top it all off wet reg grudies. Just so you dont underestimate how much effort goes into Gidos vids..Every time he says I'm just going back to camp 500m hike 50m up 50m down. Between him and the Continental Shelf is " nothing " Southern Ocean in all its glory ! to put it into perspective the next bit of land is 4000km away! that last bit of footage, have a lot more respect for the previous vid where you hopped that gap !

Sensational video. I thought the Kingy was going to be swallowed by the seal. The drone footage shows just how hard core that campsite was. Nothing like a tent perched on the edge of a chasm!
When I lived in Acapulco, we used to bring up abalone and other shellfish to the dive boat and make shellfish ceviche. It was so good!

Ceviche yum! doesn’t need olive oil and if u didn’t fully enjoy your ceviche it’s because u didn’t put enough salt in it, garlic makes it incredible and chilli takes it to the next level, nevertheless I am binge watching your videos, really enjoying them all. You are so brave and fit! 😊

I enjoy watching your videos! I'm glad the seals didn't take off with your dinner. I've been salmon fishing with my parents a few times in their boat. One of those times, a seal latched on to one we had hooked. Instead of trying to land the fish, it became a game of tiring out the seal to the point that they let go of the fish to breathe. That was a crazy instance. I can only imagine what it would be like from shore.

I was surprised those seals didn’t grab your Kingy! When I fish in Mexico and Sealions are around they will grab your fish when your bringing it up.

Kingfish don't know HOW to quit fighting. They will dive, full speed, head first, into the rocky bottom if it means breaking your line. And another thing, I don't know about your fur seals, but our sea lions will steal a yellowtail off your line faster than you can say

You were right the first time. The easy way to tell is the external ears. What differentiates them from seals is that they walk on all fours rather than slithering on their stomach as seals do.

I'm the dad. Have you tried poke' or Hawaiian style raw fish recipe? Coming from Hawaii it's our most tasty snack , goes well on a steamy rice. Anyway I made the spicy poke' with some aku or tuna that my daughters boyfriend caught couple weeks ago...epic poke'. In Hawaii we only get normal tuna and yellowfin tuna, so this was my first time at tasting southern blue aku. Frikin ono(delicious). Big fan, Mahalo K-dog. PS Kimi Werener recipe.

I’ve noticed you’ve been using the gosa 5000. Can you turn the spool with your hand while the drag is locked down? Im not sure why my 5000 and 10000 gosas are doing that or is it just normal! Feeling they need a service although not gone through a lot of work 😔
Yes I can. Can do it with my 20k Stella too well maybe... it is a struggle. I don’t fish with the drag in the 5k that tight and can turn it with my hand easily. No need to lock it right down on a reel that size and with 30lb line

Yes I’m married. We have kids so someone has to look after them while I’m out. This was during the week also so she was working. I’d like to bring her along sometime when possible
I watched this again, because I didn’t realize I’d seen it until I saw the seals again. Interesting I had just watched a Jordan Peterson pod cast with Bret Weinstein. Bret had two skulls on his bookcase - one bear and one seal. It turns out bears and seals are brothers; bears returned to the sea, You can’t tell a seal skull from a bear’s skull except for the teeth, and the seal has a much more dangerous set of canines than bears. So getting bit by a seal would be worse than getting bitten by a bear - good choice on not getting too close.

I’m not sure. They probably haven’t seen fish being caught enough to see it as an easy meal yet. I’ve had a seal steal a fish from me only once many years ago at a location that was fished much more regularly
