I don't remember exactly where I saw this but, an interviewer asked a coach "How do you coach a runner like Katelyn to improve"? The answer was brilliant. With an athlete like Katelyn, you simply give them a few pointers then get the heck out of their way. She knows what she has to do and how to do it.
One of the usual pointers is to try to keep their reins pulled back a bit. Elite runners tend to be so competitive they will run each other into the ground in workouts, end up hurt and not even make it to the starting line. It is not usually a problem getting them motivated, if they just stay healthy their talent will allow them to do good things.
That one girl made a quick move with 250m to go , then Katelyn looked over at her and she turned on the kick , see ya , BOOM ! , next thing was Katie crossing the finish line . Wow , with 2yrs left at NC , imagine what is to come .. Great mental awareness , planning , and thug like strength Katelyn !!! Or better yet , great job CHAMP !!
I would say Lioness like strength and not use the term thug. Sweet little Tuohy is a lady and not some punk from the streets who "thinks" they are tough....
Katelyn likes at least one person in front of her at least half way through the race. She waits for someone to make a break while she is conserving energy, then it's forget about it. She is quite a smart runner.
Katelyn ...wow ! I think she could really do well on a mile if fresh. She almost sprints on very long events, how fast could she go for just 4 laps ? Curious !
I'm actually imagining her extending her distances because I think with her running style and stride that may be where she eventually finds her greatest success. I think the mile is actually too short a distance for Katelyn. She recently ran her first 10K and won, of course. I expect to see more in the future!
I hope these other runners appreciate the chance they've gotten to run alongside KT, or at least run near her until she decided to put the hammer down. When KT starts to earn more and more international recognition for what looks certain to be a highly competitive professional career, these kids here can tell their friends and families "I raced with her!"

Yeah he certainly sounded like he wasn't interested in the runners names where they were in the race who was changing places what splits changed. Don't those girls deserve someone whose a little bit more than vaguely interested?
what is the origin of the term 'straightaway'?..the US is the only place that says it. there isnt a straightaway on the track..there are straights and curves though.
I honestly would have loved to see her entered in the 10,000m tonight & give one go at breaking that record. It would be two days before the 1500m finals on Saturday when she runs 2 & 1/2 hrs before the 5000m. Good luck Saturday, Katelyn. Sidenote: I don't see a DMR scheduled.
There ya have it: winning time was only 33:13 when the only time Tuohy tried 10,000m she waltzed to a 32:56 or :58, I'd have to check again, sweating for the only time I've seen her 'sweat-shine' while racing where in that race she only tried to move the last 3 laps of the race. Jacksonville humidity earlier in the day was around 65%. Too close to the ocean if you ask me (which no one should!)
She has refined her arm action noticeably from high school. Her stride mechanics have always been just about perfect, but her arm carriage was a bit raw. Looks much better to me now.
I can't wait to see KT compete at a Olympics it would be great to see her against the world's best on track and see how well she does at such a young age.
I was very fortunate to see this live, as I'm here in Jacksonville. Amazing race, and overall an amazing event with so much talent across the board in women's track.
KT will run smart and win another NCAA race but running against professional runners has proven for KT to set NCAA race records. She thrives on being pushed and she rarely gets that from NCAA runners. Overall KT just loves to run so she will take what's given to her. Go KT Go!
I have never noticed this before, but Katelyn is a head shorter and her build is somewhat smaller than the other top runners in this race. It is amazing what she can get her body to preform at such a consistent high level.
I will agree that distance runners tend to be taller than average - if only slightly. OTOH, I think Tuohy’s build looks more solid (for lack of a more appropriate term) than her competitors.
Will she break 4 minutes in the final on Saturday? The way she just glided around the track and can excelirate at will gives no clue of how fast she can go if starting the laps at around 65secs and then even go faster on the last lap.? I think it is quite possible for her to make up 20 seconds if she wants to.!😅

husband speaking age 80, probably means nothing, but I have noticed KT at the start line kind of rocks back and forth as she waits to come to the line and then give a little hop to the line and she's off. Can't wait to start. Such a talent.

Great talents can have bad habits too. A lot of time can be spent on perimeter goals and lowering injuries from over-training.

She took the lead on the last lap when a taller girl tried to pass her and she had a comfortable 7 or 8 yards lead at the finish.
4:19.08 in heat1 ... can`t wait to see the final. Last year KT ran this distance in 4:06.83

The problem is, the girls running in the West prelims ran 10 seconds faster than Katelyn did in the 1500M.
