Whatever Claudia Lane is doing, she is a true inspiration to all of us as runners and to all of us as an example of excellence in life's pursuits. I am glad to have known of her in this video. Thanks.
Kind of strange timing-wise, but Claudia was a year behind me in high school and literally this past week I remembered her and started to wonder what happened to her after high school, since I barely heard anything about her afterwards. Great, insightful video as always.
Before she purged her IG, she had commented that she wasn't as fast as she used to be. A lot of people just can't maintain HS dominance into college and beyond. When Molly Seidel won the NCAA XC championships, it was said that she broke the "foot locker curse", because people who'd won the Foot Locker nationals in HS never went on to win at the NCAA level. I think Tuohy has now accomplished that too, in the era of the Nike Cross Nationals, but people are taking that for granted. As people mature, their bodies change, you know? I had it happen myself. I was never faster than I was at age 17, and it wasn't for lack of desire.
So true!!! Bodies change with maturity, especially with young woman. All it takes is an injury or two coupled with a changing body and the times go down. It's not about desire, it about weighing more etc as a girl becomes a woman. Men's bodies, when going through puberty, change in ways that aren't as detrimental to running performance as is often the case with young woman.
Though she ws the same year as Tuohy, they never raced. The New York Times did an article about high school female runners and about how often those years were the fastest they ever ran. Puberty was an issue for many of them, apparently.
I can understand this. I had a pretty quick rise to one of the area's best high school runners by XC my junior year. A combination of injury, personal life, etc and I plateaued for 2+ years. Had to put in 3x the work to finally improve times 2nd year of college before a torn hamstring knocked me out. That was it for me at a competitive level. I hit a wall physically I think, and when not absolutely at the top of the mental game I just couldn't go faster.
I love this story. I love that she walked away from something she was great at, despite the societal drive to pursue glory. I love that she doesn't do social media. This is a good human. Well done Claudia Lane.
Watching her races got me back into running, I'm a 63-year-old man in Butte Montana my PR back in the day was 1553 5K thank you Claudia Lane I'll never forget you

I still run a 19 minute 5 k at 52 years of age, still weigh the same as l did at 20. Ran faster after birthing my third son at 46, not all of us gals fall apart.
@@teamofsteve He's right though. The way men and women grow during puberty is completely different. The way men grow is way more ideal for running (taller, stronger, higher testosterone levels, no real downside) vs women (less aggressive height and strength gain, higher estrogen levels, and growth in chest and bottom, none of which is nearly as ideal as men's puberty). Not a bad thing necessarily, but there's a reason that underclassmen boys are rarely nationally ranked vs underclassmen girls. Generally they haven't gone through puberty and sometimes get slower as they get older.
This happens quite a bit in women’s gymnastics as well. The year they turn 16 is their first senior year. Anyone with a serious injury at age 14 or 15 may or may not return with the same potential as a senior. Maile O’Keefe was a three times national Junior US champion, was injured and was not able to carry over the dominance into a senior career. She did have a brilliant NCAA career at Utah. Maile now holds the collegiate record for most perfect tens on balance beam! (look her up - she is stunning! Also look up her 2022 floor routine!) Suni Lee had a very different outcome - missed several years due to injury so I was very surprised to see her return as a senior. As everyone knows, she went on to win the Olympics gold all-around medal in 2021, and won the bronze medal in 2024 despite v serious health problems that arose in 2023. (look up Suni’s beam and floor too! She competed NCAA at Auburn for two seasons. Both her college and Olympic routines are beautiful but of course the Olympic routines have much higher difficulty.)
Geographically speaking, she didn't come from nowhere. I picked an exclusive gated community in the hills as a center point. Within a 7 mile radius you have the home high schools for Footlocker champions Claudia Lane, Kim Mortensen and Bryan Dameworth. Olympic Marathon Medalist Deena Kastor, disgraced and disqualified multi Olympic Gold Medalist Marion Jones (still the HS National Record holder). You have the athletic powerhouse of Oaks Christian, and Newbury Park, enough said.
It’s a challenging sport. And even at elite amateur level it can be all consuming lifestyle that is not for everyone; even when you are a phenom like Claudia Lane.it’s amazing how so many ultra talented athletes say “that’s enough, time to move on” good for her.
11:04 respectfully, I am amazed she did not suffer injuries sooner. Her running form is lacking for someone at her level. Arms too high and close to the chest restricting her breathing, even the way she swings them is inefficient. She heels strikes like crazy and her stride is awful.
From a selfish standpoint, sorry she's not competing. From a human perspective, as long as she's happy and healthy, good for her. I wish her the very best.
This story is so sad...coaches are the ones to blame for this sad story...one more athlete that could have been in the olympic or ncaa champion but thanks to the selfishness of their coaches these athletes get injured loss motivation can't handle the pressure due to fame...Sarah Baxter Anita sahraki Amber trotter and many talented athletes pushed and squeeze by their coaches own glory...only one athlete has demonstrated been strong enough and that's Katelyn tuohy..the only high school run who has won state national titles at high school level and at ncaa level..no other athlete has done this
I was never anywhere near as talented as lane (my 5k PR is about 22:00), but I am the same age as her and had to quit XC & track because the only way I run is with my feet hitting the ground really hard, like I’m stomping. That may have been an issue for her as well.
@@kaybay5210 I'm sure that every state has a few real courses, that actually take place on grass, but the trend is to flat, fast, track-meet-style cross country.
You set a ludicrously low bar for "legend". I'm from Europe and when I checked her record I saw why I'd never heard of her. She's another young athlete whose success was achieved by over training which likely caught up with her.
Love Claudia Lane.... Been watching her since the beginning.... very inspirational participant of the sport....er? uh? i mean? she's so fast she could write a letter & have it in the mail before the ink is dry i meant to say
She still has the Woodard Park course record....where the Cali State Meet happens. And has a degree from Dartmouth too.

Sad to see such talent leave the races, but if it's not for her, then so be it.

Her stride is mesmerizing. Very unique. Not sure if that was what caused her injury. More to life than running. Be your best.
I love it. She has such great running form. Congratulations Claudia! and a congratulations to Nevada Mareno for a valiant effort!

Always good to have a man to explain the changes in young women’s bodies. Thanks

Awesome story well done for such a talented runner.

Wow you sound like a person who played rhythm games
why does he talk like this?
AI?
11:59 you say "Tuohy also did not race either". You should say "Tuohy also did not race" or "Tuohy did not race either". You're welcome.
I have her in Insta she’s cool 😎
