one of those announcers didn't know who Katelyn Tuohy was at all. he kept messing up her name and asked if she was from Saratoga Springs. should really have prepped a little more.
In brief comments immediately after the race KT said something like she didn't feel 100% and she had a bad day. That's crazy. She only ran the ninth fastest collegiate indoor 5K of all time and the second fastest collegiate 5k of 2022 indoor or outdoor. And you know who ran the fastest (15:14 at the Virginia Challenge in May). In other words, this was a stellar performance any way you look at it. Why would she be disappointed? This was spectacular. Because she didn't break Sisson's record (15:12.22)? Wait.
The whole narrative was kinda weird, talk about going under 15' FOR THIS RACE, she broke her indoor PB by 15" she wanted to break it by 30"? yikes. I have played sports and played well on days I felt like crap beforehand and the opposite has happened too, maybe she was just missing that adreniline rush. So, dumb question: was this set up for the collegians? that is, having Emma Coburn pace them out deliberately for that NCAA record attempt? Redenfels had to take the race of course b/c it was her home track. (so she just took advantage of the pacers + Tuohy lead?)

2 pacers & a pro in Rodenfels was a great set up 2 bring down some of the Collegians PB's, especially w/Annie matching her 15:08. I just watched the Ethiopian pros, Letesenbet Gidey run a 14:06 & a half, breaking the record of 14:11 that I believe stood since 2008. Gidey had 2 pacers, Pace 1 & Pace 2, taking their correct turns at leading, unlike here when Jones dropped out from 2nd. Not only that, the pros now have a lighted inside track that flashes green for the runners to follow for record time pace in a 10m space, & then have 10m of blue lights flashing in front of the green to pace even better. Not at all fair to the runners of yesteryear (even though I know those today ran the time they did w/all the aids). Tuohy, Olemomoi have another minute plus yet to go.
KT knows now she ran a brilliant race clearly with an arduous x country race still in her legs. IMO She would have needed greater recovery after the x country performance. Human beings need to rest.
I just watched this again a month later. I love Bill Rogers' commentary. He combines the hippie origins of this kind of running with the super-macho culture of Pre and the rest of the guys. He grew up with that. His perspective is unique, unless you could get Marty Liquori or somebody of the that ilk on board. Fantastic and, contrary to most of the comments, I love Bill's insights, from the point of view of a pure runner and competitor. I once (a long time ago) heard an interview with Bill where he was asked why he was so absorbed by long distance running, at a young age. He noted that his old VW was liable to crap out at any time. But, he said, he always had running shoes in the car so he could run home, even from 15 or 20 miles, if must needs be. And that gave him a sense of security, control, and well-being. Bill is still the same person and I love his perspective.
As a tuohy fan i have nothing but respect for lauren, it’s early i’m sure she’ll be one of the usual “suspects” as the season goes on, looking forward to the battles!👍

I was familiar with Emma Coburn as well but not all the other women . I ran track and cross country in high school and these ladies would all leave me in the dust 🙂 You go girls !!! and awesome to see you are all real and not part of fake news 👍💕
She crushed her older friend and teammate. She is someone to reckon with and she is humble and sweet like Tuohy. Too bad she is not on Tuohy's team : )
Katelyn is pushing hard to reach global times while not training at elevation and perhaps 2 years before American runners hit their prime years. The question if pace will allow her to reach her max potential in 2 years 2024 or will put too much strain on her body.
Don't think she will advance that fast...she 13th at US Nationals to compete she probably needs to bring her time down 30 to45 seconds which is ALOT. I think her goal for this outdoor season is probably to break 15:00 and that would be an awesome accomplishment...after that those last 20 to 30 seconds are tough to come by...especially since she does have a shorter stride than most...but I to hope she can pull it off and compete for the USA next Olympics it's just a big ask at this point. Her peak is probably 3 to 4 years away still.
@@TheDjcarter1966 Elly Henes is her template and competition for an Olympic spot in 2024. While 3.5 years younger KT times and NCAA championships are 1 year behind. She has to get a under 15 min time in '23 and then have the kick to match or beat Elly in the Olympic trials. To win a medal she needs to turn pro and train at altitude, improve her 1500 to sub 4:00 and hope for a slow race.
Terrible terrible production. The race was with Tuohy et al, and whether she'd break the NCAA record. The color guy didn't really seem to know who she was - Twoo wey he said at one point - and the play by play guy had to keep feeding him runners names. Then at the end the announcers are telling us about the terrific battle going on with Tuohy and they showed NONE of it, the producers choosing to follow the pro's easy victory. My understanding is that FloTrack actually charges for live coverage of their stuff. If I paid for this I'd be pissed and I think that a decent high school student's AV department would have better coverage and production values.
Why is the video title about the 2nd place finisher instead of the winner Annie Rodenfels? I'm not familiar with either one of them, but I think it is a bit dismissive of the effort, talent and skill of the winner to not be mentioned. I can only assume that Katelyn is the more well known athlete, and therefore whomever put up this video thought it would received more views with her name displayed, but you could have said 'Annie Rodenfels pulls off an upset over Katelyn Tuohy;' if you thought her name was so important that it just had to be in the title.
It's not that Tuohy was the better and she was upset by Rodenfels. Actually Rodenfels has a better PB than Tuohy. Tuohy is the more popular for sure and also people were expecting her to break the NCAA Record. Rodenfels being a Pro the best she could do at her level is win and a get a PB, she won.
Huh? Rodenfels is a pro runner who ran 15:08 on this course last year. That is like asking why the focus was on Natalie Cook at the Stanford Invite. Because this was a collegiate record attempt.
Nobody is minimizing Rodenfels’ win. Rodenfels is a well-known talented professional. The focus was on Tuohy since she was hoping to break the collegiate indoor record at this mixed collegiate/pro meet.
This was all a setup for the Collegians to run their personal bests & possibly break 15:00. That is Tuohy's goal. Tuohy, Cook, Chelangat & Olemomoi are the top collegiates along w/Valby. Tuohy says she wasn't 100% & neither were the pros w/the rabbits (Jones & Coburn) running 3:01, 3:02, & 3:03's to start. It all failed. Cook ran w/rabbits in HS. Tuohy, I believe never has. Anticipation probably cost her some. But wanting the best for Tuohy & Cook this race, I now see Olemomoi as the upcoming force.
This not an NCAA event, it's an open event, anyone can participate if they have a decent record. Depending on the record they get in a different Heat. There were six heats in this race, obviously the first Heat being the fastest.

@@icarus8471 My mistake. Let's see, to be the most specific for you, clueless about commentating this race. It's like the highest performing salesman who gets promoted to sales manager but sucks. Congratulations on his running career but commentating needs work.
Actually, it was uncharacteristic of me to criticize. Frustration at KT not meeting her goal? Boston Billy has every right to chime in at 75. Bob Costas he's not but he's still kicking' 35 years after his collegiate career. Keep going Bill.
The obvious answer is they know a lot more people are interested in how Tuohy did than anything else about this race and putting her name in the title gets a lot more views. That's how TH-cam titles usually work.
Bill Rodgers was a great runner and should be venerated but not by making him an announcer. Perhaps let him comment on the conclusion of the race for a half a minute.
This is one of the worse camera finishes I've ever seen. How can you get viewers to watch a race when you only see the winner finish and you don't see the most important part of the race - THE FINISH. Imagine watching a football game. Seeing the entire final 2 minute drive. Then the quarterback throws a game winning TD with seconds left and the camera pans over to the scoreboard to show the 6 points added. Instead of showing the catch in the endzone. What a joke. C'mon Track and Field cameramen. We're better than this. Listening to the announcer talk about Tuohy the entire race and then hearing the Alabama girls coming on strong and then seeing none of them finish is a complete mishap by the camera man. A few weeks ago I watched 155 women cross the finish line in a cross country race. But an indoor race with 22 women can only show 1 finisher. This has to be fixed going forward. So disappointing.
@@jaysmith1714 Cook doesn't have the U20 record, Sarah Disanza does. That was misreported everywhere. Disanza ran 15:20 at the same meet years ago. But yes, I would have much rather seen Cook run then the pan to the clock at the end. Terrible.
She did in I think 2 separate interviews. She did not say she would do it but that she wanted to try. It is ok. She is just coming off XC. I think she will break 15:00 pretty soon. Personally, I think she looked a little off form in that race (except in that final kick). Even if she had been more genki the pacers were going to make that goal tough since their pace dropped.

Unless I spaced out another interview.
A couple of reasons. Coburn isn't a 5k runner. She runs the 3k steeplechase as her event. She can use this event as training, getting to run with some talented runners in a race environment. And finally, she was part of the 2 woman Addidas pacing contingent giving newest Addidas signee collegiate Katelyn Tuohy a chance at breaking some college records.
The camera was on her the final four laps. This was a college record attempt. The attraction in this race was what the top collegiate runners could run in a race with pros and whether Tuohy could break an NCAA record, not whether an established pro runner won the race.

I was searching for this. Thanks
would have been great if the cameras were more than the winner!!
Great race Katelyn!!!!
I wish the video would have occasionally cut to Katelyn Tuohy during the final four laps. I would have liked to see Katelyn’s kick.
Would of been nice to see how the next 2 or 3 at least finished.
Great running, love watching the collegiate indoor distance running, fantastic athletes.
Rodenfels can Motor! Back to Back Champ! She’s so great.
Amen. A lot of Tuohy fans here but the truth of the matter is Rodenfels was by far superior and two years running now. Congrats champ.
AR looked good in that win. Nice race.
dispite having a bad day, katelyn ran an awsome race
Nice greetings to Mercy and Hilda from Alabama you stayed behind and run smart. I can not wait to see you running with Everlyn KEmboi and break 15.
Tuohy was in third for a moment but was able to find another gear to kick past a pro runner for 2Nd!!!!
The 3rd and 4th finishers were both from U of Alabama
Video is much better with sound turned off
Were only here to watch Touhy and their was no footage.Etf
People didnt even realize theres like 10 pro runners in this race 😅
If we could get a camera on the field for a closer shot - that would be great .....
Annie Rodenfels runs 15:08.22 5k to win BU Season Opener.
That was nice of Coburn to pace the race.
Pacers/ rabbits are compensated….but nice that Emma traveled with teammtes
She doesn’t run. She glides!! So beautifully!!
Rodenfal smoked everyone yet Katelyn is the one they hype. I`m a Katelyn fan but how about giving someone else that earned it credit?
The camera work the last part of the race was pretty bad.....glad I don't pay
Women's track and field, tennis, skating, swimming, golf is the best.
Who is the commentator and what is he on? I want some.
Bill is announcing from the trenches during the Second World War.
I see a couple of trash cans on the infield; why is there so much trash/paper on the ground?
I hope to see Lauren Gregory dig deep this year and join the top tier.
As a tuohy fan i have nothing but respect for lauren, it’s early i’m sure she’ll be one of the usual “suspects” as the season goes on, looking forward to the battles!👍
@Namfonos she has indoor eligibility left
Horrible coverage of the race. Especially the camera work and color commentator
I had to mute Bill Rodgers…. Uhhg
😀omg thanks!!!!!!
Solida como siempre para un muy buen desempeño
Was lucky enough to be there standing at the rail just behind the start line....came down from Maine to see Katelyn Toughy in particular as I have been following her since her high school days. I was familiar with Emma Coburn as well but not all the other women . I ran track and cross country in high school and these ladies would all leave me in the dust 🙂
You go girls !!! and awesome to see you are all real and not part of fake news 👍💕
That’s awesome you were there, great experience i’m sure!👍
The camera work at the end of this race was bad - why wasn't Touhy's finish shown?
K.T., great effort! You know what you're capable of, so you're really racing against history. History will still be there at your next meets, right?
The commentating on this was atrocious.
Tuhy for the win 😍
Great race by Nat King Cook.
WoW legend
Terrible terrible production. The race was with Tuohy et al, and whether she'd break the NCAA record. The color guy didn't really seem to know who she was - Twoo wey he said at one point - and the play by play guy had to keep feeding him runners names. Then at the end the announcers are telling us about the terrific battle going on with Tuohy and they showed NONE of it, the producers choosing to follow the pro's easy victory. My understanding is that FloTrack actually charges for live coverage of their stuff. If I paid for this I'd be pissed and I think that a decent high school student's AV department would have better coverage and production values.
there was NO BATTLE! ridiculous announcers, they ever run indoor track?!
@@GeoAce777 Look up Bill Rodgers (ridiculous announcer) on Wiki....he was the world's best marathoner from 1975 to 1982 or so...
Tough race after a long xc season.
That's a solid race from Katelyn.
Great race. Meanwhile, in the UK, Sam Harrison runs a Parkrun in 15:37 (world record) as part of a hard training session.
World record for what age group? That is no where near the world record for 5,000 meters.
It was Because Annie is a pro and Katelyn is not, and how it was the top time for women's collage
Great race kt
How can any announcer of track not know who KT is? Are you living under a rock?
Can anyone help an old timer understand why Pros are at a NCAA event?
It’s not an NCAA event lmao
Green money
Why not, iron sharpens iron!🤷🏼♂️
This not an NCAA event, it's an open event, anyone can participate if they have a decent record. Depending on the record they get in a different Heat. There were six heats in this race, obviously the first Heat being the fastest.
I'm guessing that color commentator "Bill" was distance running legend Bill Rogers.
Very good ,day by day.okay set goals each races woo, like tuff and wish best Luck each race, hay stay hungry wist best each races. Merry Christmas , seasons
Good results.
Hi future viewers 👋🏻
crazy
Who the heck is the commentator that is clueless about track?
Bill Rodgers. Let that sink in.
@@icarus8471 My mistake. Let's see, to be the most specific for you, clueless about commentating this race. It's like the highest performing salesman who gets promoted to sales manager but sucks. He can understand the language but speak it? He had trouble saying anything of substance, was corrected several times, repeated himself, even mispronounced some of the athlete's names.
@@icarus8471 That it was coming from Bill Rodgers actually made the poor commentary more surprising to me.
KT, Way to go, rooms to improve on catching the PRO. The winner is the one who did the best !
How about you put Annie in the video title since she left Kaetlyn in the dust.
nah thats boring
Because she is a 26 year old pro running against a 20 year old at the end of a long season.
@@coco_bold that was a last minute surprise that coburn and dani jones were gonna pace, that was great of them!
Rodenfels killed it.
Thanks for spoiler in title, knowing the finish time before the starting gun goes off 🙄
Katelyn is great. But a ways to go before becoming world class. Go KT!
Yup a few more healthy seasons under her belt and she will be world class.
You mean you didn't appreciate watching Rodenfels spit up instead of seeing Natalie Cook's U20 US record finish?
@@jaysmith1714 Cook doesn't have the U20 record, Sarah Disanza does. That was misreported everywhere. Disanza ran 15:20 at the same meet years ago. But yes, I would have much rather seen Cook run then the pan to the clock at the end. Terrible.
Who said she was trying for 15:00 in the first place?
She did in I think 2 separate interviews. She did not say she would do it but that she wanted to try. It is ok. She is just coming off XC. I think she will break 15:00 pretty soon. Personally, I think she looked a little off form in that race (except in that final kick). Even if she had been more genki the pacers were going to make that goal tough since their pace dropped.
the pace wasnt even for 15:00, they crossed 3k at 9:07 which is 15:10s pace
@@goatbloat8233 She said she would like to; didn't say when.
@@sanfordschmidt2035 I guess you're right. she was I am not sure if I can or not commitment level in the post NCAA XC interview but she was keen to break the record and I really thought she said it in the zoom interview but I could only find one thing about it and she didn't mention time at all. Unless I spaced out another interview.
You have a bad habit of giving away the race in the video title. I just go on by to something else often enough.
this commentator is not too informed
Yeah you should look up a guy named Bill Rogers or Boston Bill...
Would love to see the second heat...
Nice having the spoiler right in the title...
The best runner won! Well done Annie 💪💥
LOOKING AT THE LITTER ON THE INFIELD ... FRICKIN PIGS! SHAME
Why would Coburn do that?
Pacing.
@@tak-el-uc That clears it up, thanks.
Coburn get ca$h money?
Coburn and Jones train with TeamBoss and there were other pros from her group in the race
Katelyn looks like she is just loping along, well within herself
Wait till KT actually recovers from a CC season of speed, tempo and mileage. Rodenfels will have company very, very soon.
Who else gets the feeling that she could still go out to the front and then lap runners for the rest of the race...?
I'm not real impressed with the announcers..
Are the announcers here obligated to mention the athletic equipment sponsors?
why are you guys not talking about the girl who actually won?
The camera was on her the final four laps. This was a college record attempt. The attraction in this race was what the top collegiate runners could run in a race with pros and whether Tuohy could break an NCAA record, not whether an established pro runner won the race.
@@icarus8471 makes sense didnt realize she was also pro since she didn't stop running like the other pacers.
@@harshitasehgal8283 theres 10 pro runners
