With so many Nikon Full Frame (FX) camera now on the market the big question is which one should you buy and why. I wanted to dive deeper into the current options to help anyone decide which of the cameras is for them. As a side note I honestly forgot about the Df and will fit that one into the discussion below.
So you are deciding on picking up a new full frame camera where should you start, what questions should you be asking?
Is this your first full frame camera or are you upgrading from a current fx camera?
    What is your budget?
Do you already have quality glass?
    What will you be shooting?
Are you a hobbyist or a professional?
Are you interested in stills, video or both?
Click the link above for a breakdown of which camera may be right for you. The Nikon D4s, D810, D750, D610 or Df.

For anyone thinking that my eyes are moving because I am reading off a teleprompter you are wrong.
My eyes move because I have an eye condition which I have talked about time and time again.
Anyone who watched the video would see the few notes I had and looked to on occasion.
This video was one take all the way through start to finish all off the top of my head.

Jared Polin Darn you Jared now i can't unsee the eye movement since you pointed it out not cool I enjoyed my ignorance. Back on topic I am really confused why you seem so attached to the D4s in comparison to the D810 with your philosophy that motor-driving is a sin. With every side by side comparison I've seen the d810 smokes the d4s in image quality, it performs slightly better in low light only being beaten by the sony a7s and it has the exact same auto focus system. Honestly the only thing that I could think of performance wise that the d4s wins at is FPS and of course not so much performance but it does also offer a pro+ type of build quality as apposed to the merely pro build of the d810. My question is what about the d4s really makes it worth 2 d810s for you? Maybe I'm just missing somthing
Edit: whoops I was slightly mistaken the d810 has slightly worse low light performance but looking at side by side tests it seems to be the very essence of negligible.

Great subject Jared. My first camera was a Nikon D70. I then purchased a Nikon D200. I used these to take sporting photos of my children playing basketball and football. I found them to be good cameras but realized that their focusing abilities were not great and found numerous photos out of focus. I then got my bonus check and had the opportunity to buy the Nikon D4s. This camera has superb focusing and low light. I found less photos out of focus and looked back to think I had to spend $1300 for a kit D70 and $1700 for the kit D200. That was $3000 and hundreds of unfocused photos. The Nikon D4s just blows everything out of the water and is a great camera. I take extreme care of my Nikon D4s and just recently purchased a Nikon Z9. As for glass, I have the trinity glass set; 14-24 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, and 70-200 f2.8. Although I promised my wife, I would abstain from speeding more money on my collection of lenses, I got her blessing to get a 300 mm f2.8. And yes, I've done several wedding shoots with happy clients. This is an expensive hobby, but I enjoy it. Thanks Jared.

Thanks for sharing your impressions, I agree with them and I will send the video to some people that are deciding what to buy (they already have an investment on Nikon glass).
A side note, if you are into architecture or landscape nothing touch the D810 outside a medium format or technical camera.
Add good glass and you are done. Is not just the resolution that helps a lot, but the low ISO and very good dynamic range.

Fro big thank you for explaining the options for Nikon FX i went for the D610 as you stated that the camera is a steal for the price. I was going D750 but saved the money for glass and i am astonished at the quality of the D610 gone from DX to FX but still keep my D5300 as they both work well. So thanks mate the advice made me make the decision on the D610 and i am not regretting it. Thanks Dude.

I'm not a full time pro but shoot weddings with a D610 and picked up a really well priced D600 as a second body instead of forking out a lot for the D750 and it's worked out really well so far. Its known drawbacks e.g. cramped focus points in the middle aren't a big deal for the type of stuff I do. If I were buying my first full frame today though, I would get the D750.

The year is 2019 and I finally decided to upgrade to a higher end camera and almost debated on getting the D850 for its 4K video but remembered that I RARELY do video nowadays (and when I finally get back into it, it'll likely be with a school so I'll have access to their 4K equipment) and settled with the D750 and using it for the first time after customizing it, I was super happy with it and can't wait to use it for actual photoshoots.

In my mind these can all be used by a working professional to make great images. My choices.
610 - someone starting out in FX, pro on a tight budget or a pro looking for a light FX body
750 - working pro shooting event, sports, or pj. and especially anyone with demanding video requirements
810 - studio photographer, portrait photographer, product photographer, architectural photographer - NOT wedding - small RAW is atrocious and the big files drag down workflow, also shooter with top notch video requirments
D4s - pro full time sports shooters, field shooters who are tough on gear, pj's on assignment in inhospitable environment - D810 video is better
    just my opinion here

      @beaugator 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

CristianAyalaProducciones You can't go wrong with the 24-70 F2.8 Nikkor (except for the high price). If you need more versatility you could use the new 28-120 AF-S Nikkor for a walk around type lens. The Sigma "Art" series lenses are a good choice if your on a budget.... Also, some of the older Nikkor AF lenses are good if you get the f2.8 versions.

I take photos for work that have to be published. I started with a D300 with an 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G and a 70-300 back in 2009. That stayed with me until last June when my bag containing all my equipment was stolen while on assignment. From then I used my office's Canon 6D with a 70-200 f2.8 and 24-70 f2.8. It convinced me that I needed to step up. So I kept saving enough to get the D750. I will use it for work for photos that will get published so I feel glad after watching this review that I didn't go for the 610.

Thanks Jared. I was trying to steel myself for the long saving time to get the D810, but this helped me. I'm making a bit of money now, and the D750 should be great. I have a D7000 now, but I'm shooting in the Casino. It would be great to just relax, use the D750 and get the job done. The only small reservation I have is the low pass filter, and I love trying to get detail into landscapes. I love zooming in and zooming in to see what is there. In one photo, I took some pictures of the ducks that the eagle was watching, way out on the mud flats of a receding lake. When I zoomed in, I realized that I had completely misjudged the scale, and I was looking at hoofed animals, probably Elk. I don't know if I need that kind of detail, though. I would like to be able to make pictures large enough to put in people's living rooms, though. Like, mine. :)

I just upgraded from a D7100 to the 750. I got a 85mm 1.8 lens as well to compliment the 50 1.4 d that i got. The 750 is simply monstrous compared to the 7100. I thought that the 7100 af system was good. (And it is). but the 750 is just on a different planet. and that full frame sensor makes the 85mm lens much more usable. Im very happy witb it.

So, I know this is a video post from like 4 yearsr ago... But, I currently have two DX cameras, the D3300(my 1st ever DSLR) and the D7100. I have had the D7100 for a couple years now and I really want to move onto full frame.. So, I've been looking around and it is between the D750 and D810 and D610 for me.. The D810 is a LITTLE high on the price scale(I know it's actually pretty low in terms of full frame cameras go but...) so the DD750 and D610 were the ones I was really thinking about... And, from what I see in this video, I think paying the extra $300 might be worth it in my opinion.. The auto focus is very important to me and as I am getting into cinematography now, all those abilities for shooting video is great! Thanks for the video man!

You're right I haven't bought a single digit Nikon D camera in a while, my last one being the Nikon D3, so I am more likely going to buy a Nikon D810 or D750 but I'd still like to hear what you think of the D4s as someone who uses one heavily. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feel this way, maybe it's worth a second thought.

What would you guys choose for landscape, the dynamic rang of the D810 or noise performance of the D750?

  • @ErwinRoossien
    @ErwinRoossien 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Tough one.. I was about to get the D810 but the 1x CF + 1x SD versus the D750's double SD feels like a issue as well. Way more handy to just bring a few sd's VS the more expensive and bigger CF cards.

Bang on. Bought a D700 as a reserve/2nd camera for my D750. For someone without the big bucks it's an excellent camera, I love it.

+Jared Polin I have a question: Is there a big difference between the D600 and the D610 in terms of night photography/high ISO capabilities? I don't know which one to choose, because I could not afford the D750. Thank you.

Get a D3X00 if you are a beginner or just want a good camera.
Get a D5X00 if you want the tilty flippy screen.
Get a D7X00 if you want a camera with professional features but don't have the money for full frame/don't need full frame.

What kind of camera did you use to shoot this video. It's super sharp! Great info by the way and my first camera was the d750 right when it came out followed by pro glass then the d500 for wildlife.

    Jared Polin.
A single question: on the nikon side, the lens options use to be much more expensive then on canon's side. Is it worth the extra $$?

  • @elay12

My main needs for photography are for myself and family, i.e. Birthdays, party's, and other memorable moments. I used to shoot with a D700 but I hated the assumptions I received from it. Granted I did the occasional wedding or other parties and portrait sessions for money, but I was always asked if I was professional. I never considered myself to be such and did gigs more as a favor to friends/family.
I now shoot with silver DF. It gives me great quality photos but I can now go out on the street and not be thought of as a Professional. Most of the time the people around me don't even care, compared to before when I shot a D700 with grip.

Thanjks Jared. Excellent comparison and pointing out what is best to buy for what we do. Are Tamron lens good enough for these cameras? I have the 24mm-70mm and 70mm to 200mm 2.8 lenses.I now have d610.

For my needs, I am looking at the 610. For vacations, walk around street photos, and the occasional "hey can you do me a favor and take a few pictures at my kid's bday party", what glass should I have in my bag?
