I was thinking Gyatso "delayed" his moving on to the Great Cycle and waited for Aang in that Spirit World just to tell him that it was not his fault and have a proper goodbye. Damn, that also means 100 years of waiting in that hut. Gyatso surely loved Aang to stay and wait for him for that long.
That's what I thought too
Well he is a monk isn’t one of their main traits patience.
Time works differently in the spirit realm. Anything could happen in only a few seconds to thousands of years. For Gyatso, once he decided to wait for Aang and after he manifested his living quarter, time would have reached 100 years for Aang to cross over.
That was my interpretation of the scene too. Especially as he is a monk, who we know are spiritually enlightened or seek it. It would be very possible for his spirit - since in the world of avatar the spirit world/limbo is deeply rooted to the "real world"
also felt like that was a reference to the Mahayana school of Buddhist philosophy and bodhisattvas
The Aang and Gyatso scene got me hard, this adaption really did a good job in diving deeper in showcasing their relationship, Gyatso waited a 100 years to see the friend he loved before he could move on that's amazing
“Got me hard” sounds wrong. I know, I’m being childish. Just saying.
@CinePals please keep being childish... we love it
@@CinePals🤣😭
@@CinePals I think he really just got straight up hard.

I liked how they showed the mom's death. Not because I enjoyed the brutality (well, I did think it is coherent with the show's tone this season), but mostly because I was not buying the soldier simply accepting the fact that her mom was the waterbender without any proof but her word. As soon as she raised her hand as if she was waterbending (like she was raising a gun to the soldier), the soldier simply reacted in what he thought was self-defense. That really sold her lie perfectly for me and made it believable and even more tragic.
Also sets Katara up to have a moment of acceptance, because she likely feels
directly responsible now for her mother's death, and she had to even watch it happen. In the anime she leaves, and when she returns, her mom is missing (which means they took and killed her, or burned her to ash right there)
Turns out we all need a therapeutic talking fox with multiple tails in our lives... who knew.🤷
Ikr 🤷🏾
Lmao
The creature in Japanese lore is a Kitsune. Foxes are revered in Japanese legend.
@maureenseel118 That is irrelevant, Yue was never supposed to be a kitsune in any way.
@@veganandatheistwho said moongirl (yue) was supposed to be a kitsune
I understand how fans would be upset with all the changes the live action has done, but I think it is doing the best it can with the number of episodes (far exceeding the choices made in the movie). There have also been a lot of good changes and additions. I like that Aang gets to have closure with Gyatso (I cried when they hugged) and the heart to heart with Bumi in the previous episode. I hope this show gets renewed because I think the actors are doing a really good job and the series will do a great job tackling the darker parts in the later seasons
with live actions more episodes mean more money...millions of millions of money so its very plausible that they NEED to cram it in because before the series go live they don't have any budgets other than what the producers already gave them and they need to manage it well. So yeh, that is why they combined some episodes together to fit the budgets.
I agree with most of the changes they've made. I actually hope for a second and third season
Yes, it's a Netflix restriction, the 8 episodes per season... sigh. It's just so clear how the show would've benefited from it lasting like 10 episodes if not 12, which isn't a lot more, but would've let the story breathe more.
@@MARYWTHER I miss when Netflix originals were 10 to 13 episodes
Why do live actions adaptation need to exist in the first place? After watching the entire thing, I never found anything that justify it. People are better off watching the original show then this.
Why did I cry more watching you watch this!!!
Also - that was a terrifying episode.
An earlier reaction video you noted you wonder how "new" people would experience this series:
I have no knowledge of the original series, so seeing it fresh this way. It is fantastic - I don't feel like I am missing info. I am getting a 'new to the story' level of story and it is good. I imagine your depth of knowledge of the source material may be a different experience, but it seems like you also like it overall.
I don't know about budget, but these people know how to use their funds!!!
One of my favorite channels getting through this show faster than all my other ones. Yes please! Love you Jaby and Achara. This show really surprised me of how good it is. And I’m glad y’all are enjoying it as well. Definitely loving the Uncle Iroh and Zuko moments. ❤❤
6:16 That Owl design reminds me of the Underrated Owl Guardian Movie the fight scenes are still good to this day
10:47 And Koh was way more terrifying here like he is a horror movie
I loved it...reminded me of it
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
The actor who voices the owl spirit, Randall Duk Kim, was the Key Maker in “The Matrix: Reloaded.”
@@patrickhuot001thank you! I KNEW I knew the voice, but I couldn't place him.
@@ars7hoshishineeday635now THIS is a throwback! the song owl city made for this movie is still such a bop 😭
The Fog of lost Souls, which gyatso explained, is a reference from the Legend of Korra animated series.
The fog is itself a spirit that traps souls.
The girl who was playing little Katara was ACTING. I was a mess after that scene. lol
I’m glad they got George Takei to voice Koh since he was in the original show.
Never knew he also voiced Koh back then as well that’s cool

Can't wait to see episode 6 reaction.
The story was the best episode in book 1 of the cartoon and its the best episode of this season 1 as well
I agree episode 6 is the best one
That moment with Gyatso truly broke my heart. It's so heartwarming but also knowing what happens next just make me in pain 😭
This is where in the series fans are either going to love the changes or hate them, there’s no in between…it goes down the rabbit hole from here on out
I loved overall, but some changes are just a dissapointment. Like no reason for these changes.
Like - aang was suppose to have no emotions when facing the face stealer, and the monk could have warned aang about him beforehand.
And how aang recognized boomie before they even fought...
@@EternalKvKI felt the same, like some of the changes made in the live action series were some of the most animes hook lines for character development. Honestly the introduction of Avatar Roku was disappointing no dragon Aang just flew into the fire nation like it was just another random Tuesday, Avatar Roku didn't even have to help him escape... They really tried to just CRAMP all those good stories into one series...
Okay but taking an owl library episode from season 2 to bring to here really pissed me off cuz dat episode was a lot wit appa toph library and solar eclipse and dessert too… do you think we gonna get dat moment for season 2 ?
@@pelumi.2359
oh man, spoiling the librarian, by showing him in season 1 forrest was the dumbest idea ever... like who even thought thats a good decision ?
@@EternalKvK dats wat im saying like r we gonna get dat episode for season 2 wit the sand bender library and appa eclipse 🤦🏾♂️
I personally liked the show but at the same time I understand the misgivings some people have regarding the extremely compressed storytelling and how they focused on recreating classic scenes from the anime as mind of a nostalgia bait. But they have the ability to learn and improve upon that so I hope it gets a 2nd season. I don't know how many seasons this show will get as is obvious that is pretty darn expensive which limits it's viability despite popularity in the long run. At least 3 to 4 seasons would be great.
The original had 3 seasons so im pretty sure it'll get 3 seasons as well.
To be honest, rewatching it through reactions and all, it seems less overwhelming than binge-watching it. I understand what reviewers like Grace Randolph meant when they said the show would've benefited from a weekly release. Watching the episodes individually makes them feel less... packed.
@@MARYWTHER
Netflix rarely if ever does that their motto has always been the Binge formula for good or ill.
@@MARYWTHER I didn't have time to binge watch it, but even if I was, I feel like I would need to take a break to decompress after such an emotional episode. Too many people these days just seem to watch shows just to get to the end without fully absorbing all the nuances.
This was my favorite episode so far as a fan of the original. It actually got me EXCITED by the changes and not knowing how it's going to work out even though all the elements are familiar and true to the spirit of the original. At this point I'm solidly accepting that this is an ADAPTATION rather than a copy or remake. Looking forward to continuing with the rest of the series tonight.
I am a huge Avatar fan and I can understand how some might not like the changes they made. I actually enjoyed this restructure a lot, because the changes made sense to me and made this adaption a fresh take were I can still be somewhat surprised but still get a lot of nostalgia.but the core story stays the same. Some of the changes might have been unnecessary, but they can definitely learn from this first season.
I like it i agreee❤❤
“This is way too much” is code for “this is way too good”
Really Loving this adaptation!
This was a good and powerful episode. Almost everyone has some kind of trauma to deal with and accept and get passed Katara guilt of she might've been the reason they're mom was killed or it was playing on her fear because it's definitely different from the original if that's the case either way I really enjoyed the moment between Gyatso and Aang either way a very powerful episode and Koh the Face Stealer was more menacing in this than the original awesome reaction you two 🔥👏🏾👏🏾
I love seeing those thumbnails with y'all having tissues every episode 😂
Isn’t Jaby the guy who says Show me Dont tell me? When they showed you what happened to Katara’s mom now he feels he has been manipulated.
I think I understand him though. I don't necessarily feel "manipulated", but there was definitely no need to show Katara's mom getting roasted. They could have followed suit and used an offscreen death to keep viewers emotionally invested, but instead, they chose overkill.
@@SamPineSol The show is live action for a reason. Its not cartoon. Its meant for a wider audience.
I mean it cuts away right when it starts, it's not really graphic. And this adaptation isn't supposed to be just for kids@@SamPineSol
Katara’s mom was pretending to attack the firebender. The firebender probably didn’t even think about aiming at the face, he was just trying to kill her as fast as possible
It took the focus away from Katara's emotions and put it on the brutal attack. Us being shocked here is kinda distracting. It would have been better to show Katara's face instead, the flames reflecting in her eyes. We would still know what's happening and we'd hear it, but the focus would be on Katara's emotions instead. That would still be "show, don't tell". Actually showing brutality is better suited for revenge kills, where we actually want to see it happen to feel the satisfaction of it.
Next episode is my favourite!
This show really knows how to tug at the heartstrings. Twitter can talk all they want I enjoyed the fuck outta this show
Everyone on this show needs a hug
I haven’t yet watched the last 2 episodes, but as a fan of the original, I think episodes 3-6 really benefit from a second or third viewing. After getting over the initial feelings of seeing stories compressed into one episode, I can see more of what they were going for with these episodes. Ep 3 and 4 form a pair, showing us that knowing who is a friend or a foe is not always straightforward and how important it is to know what/who you are fighting for. Ep 5-6 (my favorites so far) also form a pair, showing the long lasting effects of trauma and hurt and what it does to someone (or a spirit), but also we see a glimpse of how to move forward (can’t wait for you to react to Ep 6, it really hits emotionally by the end on this point). At first it seemed odd to mash Hebei into all of this, but when viewed from this overall theme, it fits. I think my only critique would be to save Koh for later like in the original to allow the Hebei story to resonate a bit more.
It's getting emotional😢😢 cant wait for ep6, the best imo
Of all the creature designs here in the first season of ATLA LA goes to Koh. He was very creepy and brought justice to the animated version.
All I can say is that episode really gets you in the feels and had some creepy moments that definitely caught me by surprise. I can't wait to see what happens next episode.
When I saw Amber Midthunder's name in the credits I was like "What...Where?" and had to check back in the episode. I think she was the voice of the fox in the spirit realm because I felt the voice sounded familiar, but I definitely feel it sounded like her when I rewatched that part.
Enjoyed the reaction 👍👍✌ out.
I do love how this show brings realism to a wartorn world and deals with trauma amd growth. I think the choice to show a genocide in episode 1 waa our warning that this will not be the light cartoon we remember.
I think the reason that Katara seems so subdued in earlier episodes is that she is living with her trauma and has lived a life constrained by herself and her family out of fear of the consequences in revealing her true self. I feel like as Katara grows in power, the empowerment might make her more bold as we know her while also fueling some rage.
I think the show isn’t bad but its also not good. They crammed so much in these episodes it almost feels like they were afraid they won’t get any more seasons. I would give it a 5/10. Mainly because of the Zuko Iroh scenes that they nail. And Sokka they did good with. Episode 6 was terrible also, not sure what everyone is raving about. They sacrificed the group by separating them to try to tell a story with the combination of the OG episodes. But the show is about friendship love, it loses all of that by doing what they did.
But sometimes it just confuses me as to why they needed to change so much. It has become pretty obvious that the creators left due to the changes as it has become disrespectful at this point.
They changed because its LA i get it but no need to change this much. It literally changes the storyline so much and events that occur later.
I understand the Koh scenes and all but there is no danger with how they portrayed him. Its a total waste of character. In the OG we had the fear that if Aang shows any sort of reaction his face will get stolen. Also whats up with Aang crying every episode “this is because of me” or something along those lines. Show us his guilt on his face. you don’t have to repeat it every episode. We get it he is upset but cmon we aren’t dumb.
Idk we could sit here for hours with so much thats wrong with this show.
Luv this change, better than Sokka and Katara getting sick and sucking on frozen frogs🤣
I like how no one noticed that they never showed sakka trying to date a firenation soldier
oh shit we get hei bai. Sokka over here rhyming like thiw was tales of ba sing se. Damn Aang already knows about the spirit world thats different.
jaby it makes sense gyatso went to the spirit realm like iroh went to the spirit world when he died in legend of korra leaving his body behind and abandoning his spirit needs we see this in the second book of korra
I agree with Jaby, a lot of things in this show are extremely heavy handed. It feels like they just wanna seem serious as inconspicuously and overtly as possible.
Fan of the cartoon, here, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the live action show.
I love the direction they're taking and look forward to them doing a series on adult Aang.
Okay I like the changes like puttin 3 plot story into one but taking the OWL library episode from season 2 to bring to here really pissed me off cuz dat episode was a lot wit appa toph library and solar eclipse and dessert too… do you think we gonna get dat moment for season ?
@@pelumi.2359 There's definitely a possibility the desert moment gets brought up in the new season. For me, I don't blame the show runners for what they're doing because, they're presented with the challenge of a) adapting a beloved cartoon series for live action b) going from 23 episode season to 8.
There's a lot of story to tell in such little time. They're forced to choose key moments to tell the reimagined tale of Aang. With that said, if we're patient we could be treated with moments just as special as the show.
Whew I got here early, i just finished the whole show, excited for the next episode
Seriously I have been waiting for you guys. ❤ you guys are doing a lot of work. There is more emotional moment with this episode, you guys need more tissue 😢
The fog of lost souls is from legend of Korea
I was gutted when Arden cho left teen wolf. I know she’s been in other stuff since but nothing that really caught my interest if I’m being completely honest. So I was really pleased to see her in this.
Who the heck made the TH-cam edit skip over the scene of Azula training?! That's a very short, important scene!
Yea she def started cracking lol
This episode was like that scene in age of ultron
Koh is way more terrifying then the animation counter part he's like my greatest nightmare but awesome job brought it to life btw Arden cho as June she did really great job as the bounty hunter plus she's super 🔥 both in live action and her animated counterpart😍🥰
4:07 its funny cause thats kinda how ozai was when he was a kid lol thats how he sees through Azulas BS 😂
It’s so deep I love it
This Ep was Great!
Is that Algerian music playing in the background when Zuko and Uncle Iroh goes to the local bar?
Personally I thought the addition of Koh into this plot kinda weakened the Hei Bai story. Turned that spirit into a monster with no resolution. I would have liked to see Aang resolve that with Hei Bai in the same way that made them friends going forward.
I really liked Gyatso in the spirit world, and the addition of the fox (which is nice foreshadowing for later).
Jaby made a great analogy about the series.
Ko doesn't live in the Fog of Lost Souls, but I guess they're not planning ahead for live action Avatar Korra. The special effects were amazing this episode, wish we could have seen Roku's dragon, Fang, though.
I love what they did with koh
15:02 Oh snaps! That's awesome! 🙏🏽💪
10:55 The face stealer! 👀
Why was wan shi tong there? What happened to hei bai? Why doesn’t koh steal faces? I didn’t understand these changes
Because it's not a remake 🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
We are 6 episodes in and the stakes haven't been laid out in front of Aang? Master the remaining three elements and defeat the Fire Lord before Sozin' Comet returns on summer solstice. Are there going to be more than three seasons because it seems there is no rush yet? Every time Aang does something there should be this looming threat in the background that summer solstice is getting closer even if they show it the end credits. Maybe have a calendar in the end credits with each day being crossed off lol...
They had to drop the timeline simply because by the time they get to Season 3, the actors won't be children anymore. The actor for Aang is already 15 and is way past the squeaky voice.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl So are they going to reveal the comet to Aang in book 3 when they finally see what age the actor will be during the filming of book 3. So are they going to time jump between books? How are they going to explain two time jumps (book one to two and then book two to three) in the middle of a war?
@@Patrick76399 All they said is there's going to be a time skip. I don't know what they are going to do with the timeline. But since they don't have a choice, we'll have to wait and see.
I wish I had a friend like achara..
Azula looks like a baby because she us a baby..shes 14 in the cartoon and show
Jaby that was wonderful sharing. That's how emotions work. Maybe at some future time when you aren't thinking about recent family events you watch it again and get a different feeling. Emotions are weird. The question of can the art pull the same emotion is valid. Is it manipulating you or just coincidence. I felt last episode them playing leaves from the vine was manipulating watchers of the original series.
I want a Therapy Kitsune now
They really didnt have to do Hakoda like that though.
in the animated series we did not see Katara's mom get killed, we were just told that was what happened.
Being triggered is very real - my wife was often triggered by things, sometimes very unexpected things [she had cPTSD from some series things in her earlier life] there are things which trigger me too, so I understand.
That Koh creature reminded me of Hollow knight: Midwife😂
Did anyone notice the voice of the Owl Spirit is the same person as Master Oogway from Kung Fu Panda?
June:.. what are you looking at
me as zuko: my future wife
Okay, wait, let me watch it first!! (GOES TO WATCH)....
This episode really hit me😢
Overall I've enjoyed the tv show and I'll definitely rewatch it, but for me this spirit part was one of the letdowns of the first season.
In a first watch I did not like the changes to the lore they did with Koh, the Fog and the made up trauma for Sokka. They feel so unnecessary, especially since we already have a main character with big daddy issues and it makes Hakoda look fake af. They also take away some nice things that could happen in a potential adaptation of Kora, so meh...
Anyway, just venting. Have fun and enjoy
At least Azula look like someone’s little sister not like how it is in the anime original, where her she Zuko almost looked like the same age
Damn Jaby in a bed scene with Arden Cho.......
😢😢😢 i feel tbe same as u guys
I cant breathing
well, the little kid (Katara) tried to help and tried to bend and FAILED, thus her mother sacrificed herself and saved her... so technically, yes, it was her fault. cos her action, forced her mother to the thing every (well adjusted mother) would do to save their child.
"This girl who riding animal with long tounge suppose to be play as Azula or Mai since she got more thinner cheek than the actreeses that play Azula and Mai right now !"...😩
I just dont like that we are seeing the owl spirit this early as we may not see the lost library the next season.
Also, changing the power set of Koh. I miss the no emotion Aang.
At first, I was confused on why there is the Owl from Book Two here. Then, I remember on the original animated series in the episode called "The Swamp". Aang sees a little girl (Toph) he will meet later in Book Two. Just like the owl that we will see later in season 2. Same as when I also realize right away about the fox talking to Sokka is princess Yue.
that's the same feeling I felt when the fog of lost souls was introduced.
OW! My feelings!
i wish arden got more screen time in teen wolf
Easily the best episode (at least up until ep 6, where Team Jaby has stopped uploading for now). The best use of the fusion and condensing of multiple storylines like this adaptation's been doing, without altering things significantly (I'm still not over how dirty they did Bumi smh)
I have to try hard to separate this from the cartoon. I keep finding myself saying things like "but wait that wasn't until book 2". Not that it isn't nice to see.
Will upload next episode today??? 😊
oh shit its KOI!!!
Oh we didnt get the fog until legend of korra ok ok
Do we have knowledge if Jaby already watched Korra?
Just got done watching the other video
ill just say this...i had a feeling abt the fox and i ended up being right!
I am still so surprised by the bad reviews of this show? This was never going to be a 1:1 recreation of the original show. Other than Katara's portrayal which I think has been really cut down and shortened (which needs to be corrected if there is a second season), I think this is a really fine adaptation of 8 and let me reiterate EIGHT episodes of a really amazing show.
Fr. They called themselves as fans but never really analyse the good things of the series. That's why they will always seeing the bad things, not the good things. For me, they're no fan, but more to hypercritical.
It is the best adaptation of All time
The haters are ruining it for me. I wanna see Toph

Im convinced those who actually enjoy the live-action are those that just barely remember watching it grow up. The best moments of Avatar they ended up changing or modifying it. Its borderline disrespectful. I can see why the original creators left...
Can anyone tell me which fire nation girl they are talking about ? "Sakas tragic dating attempts" in episode 1-4 saka's interaction was with only one girl. 🤔🤨
Well you have to remember that they had adventures happening in between the episodes that were shown. And they did that with the live action as well. They didn’t show all their side adventures in the LA but they made mention of them they just didn’t show it.

But this episode is honestly the best one so far! I haven't seen any episodes past this point. It's so good! Maybe because I wasn't expecting it to be good??? Also Azula is growing on me! Not her friends though lol
