Assassin's Creed Odyssey Proves Something Incredible | Luke Stephens

  • Assassins Creed has been a major franchise for over a decade. Release after release the series never ceases to grow in following and in scope. Just when players think that the IP has grown to new, unbelievable heights Ubisoft releases a new game that smashes expectations. This is the story of Assassins Creed: a repeated demonstration of how to exceed expectations even in the wake of criticism of a “lack of vision.” It certainly has been a journey to get here, and they weren’t always like this, but now it is clear that we should not look at Ubisoft as “that AAA developer that just shoves out ham-fisted games before they’re ready,” but rather as a leading developer with the best tech in the business of Open-World RPG’s. They’ve successfully reinvented themselves and it is incredible.

      The only faults I can find in it (but they are big ones)
      1. The face animations, to me personally, seem completely whatever. The eyes never seem to quite look at the right place or jiggle around, the facial expressions are incomprehensible (I don't think they used face tracking on real actors, or they did it very very badly).
      2. The NPC's are completely goofy.
      It is a great game, but tbh I don't think it's unfair RDR2 overshadowed it.

What I can say is that this game feels less like an AC game and more like a typical RPG style game with plenty of content and grinding that never really gets boring. The open world is as big as I've seen in any game and it feels unique. Not to mention the cool fighting mechanics and abilities that you can upgrade as well as an interesting story. I’m with you 100% on this. It’s now December 2019 and I’m still playing it. I’m that history nerd, and I’ve been waiting for historically accurate open worlds for a long time. I played Origins for 290 hours and Odyssey for a staggering 729 hours. And I’m not even done the DLC. I never played a single title that long in my life. The game just brings me so much enjoyment. The story, the unbelievable gorgeous world in 4K HDR (some of the best in game sunsets you’ll ever see), the mechanics, the systems.
    There was a time where I just rolled as a Spartan and redid Athenian forts over and over just to trigger the conquest battles, and recruit the leader as a ship lieutenant. I still do the daily and weekly quests. There’s just something about this game and I appreciate hearing someone who had a similar experience. It gets a lot of slack for being grindey but when you love just spending time in the world, it’s certainly not a chore. Don’t even get me started on the Discovery Tours.

      There's only around 150 to 200 hours of content in the game I don't know where the hell you got 720 from but it doesn't sound like your telling the truth also If you had played any other Assasins Creed you would realise what a sack of shit Odyssey is in its historical accuracy gameplay features and Assasins Creed lore

    @wolf3012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +71

    My first impression of Odyssey was that it would be utterly innacurate in terms of historical content. But it proved me wrong, it's actually in between, some things are indeed innacurate (such as some weapons) but many characters are so well portrayed, it tries hard to teach you history, which is one of the core elements of this series

    • @Alovon
      @Alovon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      And honestly, the weapon thing makes some level of sense due to
      1. It's a game
      2. Isu existed in the AC Universe, so their stuff is hanging around which pretty much explains all the superpowers/magic weapons.
      And honestly, some other abilities can be explained via natural stuff.
      Poison Weapons: Add a coat of poison on the weapon
      Fire Weapons: Harder to be accurate to, however it could be a thing like charcoal pine resin in Dark Souls, as in, a coating of flammable material over the blade that the user sets on fire, now for durability long term it is a bit risky, however, it could be feasible if you know how to be safe.
      Second Wind and the increased Damage thing/Battle cry of Ares?: Adrenaline Rush
      And pretty much everything else that Kassandra and Alexios can do are due to the spear which is a piece of Eden, so the Isu tech comes into play.

    Witcher 3 was a game which made me feel like I was really in the game. It was the first time I had felt this while playing a game. I can't even say how much that game changed me. I played the game everyday for atleast a 2 hours and got a total of 300 hours and did pretty much everything. It changed my life. I started viewing games differently. After that Odyssey was the closest to make me feel the same way again and that is why I love this game. Ive played all the AC games, they are ALL good games, but Odyssey takes it to another level. It is truly a masterpiece. I will never understand, nor care why it gets hate from a small camp of AC fans. Whenever i ask a hater why they hate it, they can never give a decent reason why. Usually they say because it doesnt have parkour🙄 And then they try to say it doesnt have stealth/ assassin ability, but i always shut down that LIE, and they quickly shut up. Ive enjoyed every AC game, but Odyssey is the only one i keep going back to. I had hoped Valhalla would be as good as Odyssey, but was disappointed. The gameplay mechanics isnt as smooth, and having to babysit a village gets old REAL fast. And the main character isnt nearly as interesting as Kassandra, the greatest AC character, HANDS DOWN. I applaud every Odyssey fan out there for being open minded TRUE AC fans.

    Indeed! I have purchased this game long time ago and played it just for a couple of hours and left. With Valhalla launching, I picked it up to go through the story quickly, to find out, after playing for hours, a very emotional scene saying "ubisoft presents"... so I've barely scratched the surface of the game and since then I couldn't stop playing after tons of hours of fun, funny, emotional, deeply tied main and side stories, very rich and varied gameplay, I'm still 50% of the game, incredible amount of the map unexplored yet, and it gets better with every second. Even at mid game new mechanics being introduced it is really an amazing game. Now Valhalla is out, played it for one day and I feel I want to come back to odyssey. Believe me, I'm not an RPG fan, I barely play games. I'm much more into flught simulators and combat or hard-core survival complex games. This game is fantastic and accessible to everyone and it can be played the way you like the best... give it a try... please

      @vibhu sharma I disagree. Origins had a better plot and characters that didn't feel like cardboard cutouts. The world also felt more dynamic and alive. It also looked better graphically. Having one well-written protagonist without dialogue choices also lends itself way better to the narrative. Odyssey felt really empty and lifeless in comparison.

    The Things I love about ODESSEY and ORIGINS are that I can explore ancient Greece and Egypt respectively. I really haven't played any AC game before Odessey bec I just don't like them. I mean now I feel that they are a masterpiece but BEFORE that realisation I fell in love with Odessey. Ancient Greece is too damn beautiful. Same thing with Egypt. I wanted to look and visit the pyramids when they were in there original form with the golden top. But Valhalla disappointed me, I waited for that game for soo long and saved money for it. Ancient England and Norway has nothing special.

    He has just expressed my sentiments to the T! This is my favorite Assassin's Creed. It is definitely a masterpiece and Ubisoft should be given high praise for this game. It is, by far, the biggest world I have ever played in and the most beautiful.
    365 hours played, 12053 kills...and still haven't done all the side quests or the exploration/educational mode. If you own an Xbox One or PS4 and you do not own this game, it is an utter travesty. I haven't played all of the AC games, my last one was Brotherhood. I'm a big fan of history and ancient Greece with it's mythology is exciting for me and the history of it all. When I first looked at the map in game, I wasn't sure if I could go to all of these places. I didn't realize how big this map is and still haven't because I haven't even explored anywhere close to all of it yet.
    I love coming across the different mercenaries. I remember walking down a dirt path and I saw this mercenary icon and I wasn't sure what was going to happen. He was riding a horse, came by and said my name in a sentence and on the screen it popped up with his name. About 30 seconds later, another mercenary rode by.

    The one major tip for anyone wanting to try this game is that if you wish to play it, go in with an open mind and DO NOT (I REPEAT, DO NOT) go in expecting a full fledged assassins creed style game. Someone I heard (who i forgot) said something along the lines of this: Odyssey is an RPG with Assassins Creed elements mixed in, NOT an Assassins Creed game with RPG elements mixed in.
    It’s a really good game. I have played for around 18 hours now I think and even though in a low level (Currently at 18) I enjoy seeing what Ancient Greece has to offer. I enjoy fighting a group of bounty hunting mercenaries, I enjoy trying to find the right time to slip through the guards sights to go kill a target who belongs to a certain group (story related so I won’t spoil it), and I even enjoy the side quests and the interesting stories they tell. What I’m saying is the game has a very good way of making you feel like you world is alive with people living in it and going about their own lives wether it be from the 2 major military powers fighting over territory to the mercenaries that pop up at the most random and sometimes most inconvenient of times, even some of the citizens add to the realism of the game. It’s all great.
    Then there’s also the fact that you can go get a weapon with a level requirement of 41 at like any point in time if you manage to get to its location without provoking anyone.. or the alpha lions that guard it. Gotta love it

      I can't get it either. Yet they praise the games like AC3 which does the things way worse than AC Odyssey. Nostalgia is a very poisonous thing. They wanted the series to change, Ubisoft did it and they complained (Unity) not just because of glitches but also because of the similar design (missions, similar stories (the main characters are mostly orphans, I wonder why... That's actually the difference I really liked in Odyssey. I said "Oh shit, finally a character with a family, and she/he is searching for his/her family! They finally tell us something different since AC Rogue!". I personally like family stories especially those with sibling conflicts since as a girl myself I have two elder brothers.), dull characters, boring combat system etc.) we've already seen in previous games, people wanted something more different from this and Ubisoft created a whole new thing. With a much better combat system, exploration, side quests, freedom in character builds etc. yet toxic fans still complain about that. Ubisoft is actually happy with the sales now, they don't want to face with another case like Unity's.

    Finally someone who appreciates this magnificent game! I am an Ancient Greek history and mythology fanatic and this game really does the time period, geography and mythology justice.

    I loved AC:Odyssey and completed it 100%. Took like 120h but worth it, loved most of the quests and the lore was fun too.

    I've spent countless hours playing this masterpiece! I will always remember the first time I've loaded up this game, and was taken away instantly by the world of Greece.

    Definitely my favorite of modern AC games despite it's flaws. It's done so much right that Valhalla stepped back on and some ways nonsensically. Seriously the heroic greek merc doesn't gameover when killing civilians but a viking who in history is notorious for their rampant murder does?

    Ive never played an Assassins Creed game, the premise didn't hook me so i stayed away. My 9 year old son suggested it because he liked it so a year after it's release I paid 50 dollars for everything including all DLCs. I absolutely love it. I started playing and forgot I was actually sent back in time to do something or rather. I am addicted, there's not a second where i am bored and it doesn't limit you to the storyline. The maps and storylines are huge!!! The characters are great and the history, myths and maps are incredible. I love this more that Red Dead and i loved that.

    The next assassins creed game, in my opinion should have injury mechanics, when u fall, you limp. When you get shot in the leg, you can’t run, if in the arm, you strength decreases. You can’t climb if you’re severely injured, you bleed out eventually, and health doesn’t regenerate by itself. You aren’t a demigod like Alexios, and at the start you aren’t even good at anything, you have to grind your way through to level up your skills. And really earn the ‘assassin’ badge.
