Smash Remix is genuinely impressive to see in action; these modders are on a whole other level.
Yeah, it's crazy to see how much love is put into it
It’s also equally as fun to play as it is impressive
And completely works on real hardware, if you use a flash cart. It plays really well and you can turn off the N64 anti-aliasing for an FPS and clarity boost. You just need an expansion pak as it won't even launch without it. Doesn't even give you an "expansion pak required" warning screen like the other games.
As a playtester of the mod, I can absolutely agree, the devs place all of their love and passion into the mod.
It is a true love letter, and I am happy I can help in any way possible!

I'm used to flavor-of-the-week Mario 64 mods where simple textures are changed, the title of the hack is silly, and 75% are aimed at Simpleflips' attention.
Then you get the KurkoMods level of hacks. There's custom levels, new character models, faithful interpretations.
This mod is on like, a Kaze Emanuar level of detail. Optimized, detailed, the clear labor of years of work.
Whats amusing to me is how Vinny and Simpleflips became friends via Joel playing a random mod one day. The amount of circumstance that had to happen for these two legends to meet is hilarious to me.
On another note, I would like to see Vinny and Simple play 2 player Mario 64 one day. That would be amazing.
There's something super cozy about playing as Mario walking around in his house. Without any music. While Luigi is playing Mario 64.
Because it reminds you of your uncle.
the haunted piano being a fully functional independent character is what really puts this mod in a class of its own
Not only is it a character, but it's absurdly well animated for the N64. Look at all that squash and stretch!
I find it funny how "Grimace" is in the tags for this despite him not showing up in this segment aside from a mere mention.
7:55 The reason bob omb appeared twice is due to how picking up objects works in Mario 64 (also OoT from what I remember). When an object is picked up, the real thing remains where it is and has its rendering and collision turned off. Meanwhile, a fake is cloned to appear in your character's hands, with a pointer to the original object so that when you drop or throw it, it can replace the fake with the real thing again.
It's a large component of why a lot of SRM in oot works. Bob omb appeared twice because the rendering on the original did not get turned off.

He is not legal in tournaments lol. He is supposed to be a joke character, he is made to be a boss, an OP character. He has big hitboxes, is super heavy, and his moves deals so much damage. 😂
Typical Smash response -- "wait, don't use the content in the modded game. Actually don't use 90% of the content in the real game either. Oh and 3/4 of the characters aren't viable. No don't choose that level. No don't use items. Wait that physical controller is unfair. Yeah sure you don't have to shower. AHEM this is now truly a game of skill!"

Tooie is great, man. The level design definitely gets less focused as the game progresses - I'll admit that Grunty Industries and parts of Cloud Cuckooland are a slog - but I've always enjoyed how sprawling and diverse the overworld and other levels are, and for a game as ambitious as it is, most of it absolutely hits the mark. I'd way rather spend time playing through Tooie again than the simple collect-a-thon that is the B-K.

Smash 64 remix is like my dream game I wanted as a kid. But the characters that date after N64 make me irrationally upset. It's awesome that Goemon's in the game, it takes me back to '99, then right next to him you see Dark Samus from '06 and the childish illusion is ruined.

As someone who just recently streamed all of Tooie, I can honestly say for a fact that Vin is not missing anything lol. The game hasn't aged super well; the first four levels are fine, and then the remaining five are all tedious and terrible. The game has a very strong start and then just, drags on for way too long.
It's the same syndrome as Sonic Adventure 2 Battle; people remember "gotta go fast!" but forget about the emerald hunts.
People remember good stuff and forget the monotonous garbage.
It's not that bad, at least it has ledge grabbing which Kazooie doesn't have
