This reminded me of once, I was eating by myself in a McDonalds and right next to me there were a father and her daughter. The father DID NOT EVEN TAKE HIS EYES OFF THE PHONE in like 25 minutes. LITERALLY. The poor child was about 5 yo, super cute, eating, and checking out her happy meal toy. After those approx. 25 minutes, the dad finally stopped using his phone, and guys, I can't describe the face of that little girl. The joy in his face when her dad finally engaged and talked to her. I'm about to cry just remembering it. Society is addicted to a drug and we are not even aware. And kids know.
This needs a different title...it’s about so much more than flip phones. It’s about saving this generation from the horrors of social media. It’s about being GOOD humans.
Flip-phones are a large part of the solution though. Many parents will be too anxious to take away smartphones from their children if there is no alternative way to communicate
He did the same for me and, even though it took me a year, it was the first things I ever needed to hear. I am glad that his message reached more people than just me.
Collin Kartchner came to my school. I'm in sixth grade. He made me cry and made me appreciate how my mom refuses to give me a phone or social media. Thank you, Collin!
I like that challenge: Never let your children see you on your smartphone. That's the childhood I had, and it was wonderful. That's the adolescence I had, and it was hard enough without being worse. I want the same for my kids.
Today he talked to our school and many kids were left in tears. One of our teaches who had been teaching for 35 years said that it was one of the best assembly's ever. I'm only 13 and I actually paid attention instead of going on my phone like most kids do. I related to many things he said. I loved how he was funny. And I wish he could come back again. Never before have I actually enjoyed an assembly. I always talk to friends, zone out, go on my phone, ect. I only have 1 social media platform. So idk how it is to have Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook but all ik is that Snapchat is enough for me. Just thought he was wonderful and actually taught me something that will stick with me.
I’m 14 and I love this. I just wish that everyone my age could hear this. Me and my peers have so much more to live for than phones! Its scary growing up in this world as a teen... but this gives me hope.
Yes I was thinking that. It’s crazy back then people were sounding the alarm. It’s only gotten a lot worse. For me personally my phone addiction went full blown during Covid when there was nothing to do
Oh, please change the title of this Ted talk! I saw it more than once and didn't watch it due to the title. But a friend shared it today and I am so moved. This is about so much more than flip phones. Thanks, Collin
Thank you so much for spreading the truth about smart phones Collin. Your message has impacted so many teens around the country and around the world. RIP friend and may your legacy live on
This guy spoke at my school, he's amazing. Our middle school has a new rule with no cell phones and I feel much safer without having to worry about my every move being recorded. Also kudos to him bevause it's hard to have a good presentation for middle schoolers
I use a flip phone. My mental state has improved substantially. I had never realized that social media and smart phones had been a severe detriment to my mental health.
Such a great presentation. Really hit a chord. He and his inspiration will be greatly missed in this world. 40 is too young to die. How nice that he was present at home with his family and not on his phone. They will at least have those memories of him. RIP Collin .
Social media must be held accountable, for the Thousands of young lives that have been lost to it. History will look back at this moment in time the same way we looked at people believing smoking was healthy in the 50's. WE MUST DO BETTER!!
“I handed my daughter a loaded gun and did not teach her how to use it” *Collin says in his head “What? Why would you give your daughter a loaded gun?” The mother then pulls out a phone and repeats what she just said.* “I handed my daughter a loaded gun and did not teach her how to use it.” -What a mother said to Collin that then he said during his talks at schools.
This is absolutely correct. We need to listen to this and we need to make changes for the sake of our children and ourselves. I hope you continue to speak to everyone you get a chance too. This is literally a Life Saving Message. Little did I know until just now that Collin died at age 40 of natural causes, possibly an aneurysm not verified. How tragic for his family and children. What an awesome father he had to be and husband. RIP and prayers for his family that they are doing well.
As a teenager, I can really relate with what he said. I'm so glad my parents aren't on their phones 24/7 and I'm so glad they taught me what I know about my self-worth before giving me a phone. Still, it was rough dealing with drama on social media. I'm so glad I was lucky enough to become a part of an online community that supported positivity and taking care of yourself. I completely agree with everything he's said - though I've found great online friends, I need to love my irl ones more. I dont want to end up as the kind of parent who values their phone over their children or friends. It's so sad to see kids who are depressed or suicidal and only have social media to depend on for help, and sometimes help isnt there. Thank you so much for giving this talk, it's really helped me check myself and my choices.
I'm so sad to hear about Collin's death. Collin, your legacy will continue on. Thank you for your honest approach and inspiration. You will be missed. Endless Hugs for Liz and the kids. I'm so sad to hear these tragic news. You're forever loved.
I'm 25 years old.and I went back to my Motorola razr. Deleted all social media and just use my laptop to check emails. These smart phones spy on you listen to you and feed you advertisements all day. So glad to get rid of it.
Genuinely brought tears to my eyes, what a powerful talk! As a paediatrician, this hit close to home with the number of children who are attending hospital with attempted suicide, deliberate self harm and overdoses. Removing smartphones or barring children from social media may not solve every problem but it's a start
Thank you, Collin, for ALL that you are doing! This is a hard message to hear because many parents/guardians feel guilty. I remind them... "You can't change what you don't acknowledge AND you certainly can't change what you don't know!" Now, they know. It's NEVER too late to change.
I attended one of Collin's events in October. It was an absolutely amazing and life-changing experience. I love his message and continue to support it. Keep it going, Collin!
I've had anxiety and depression even before smart phones. So I learned quickly to avoid most social media platforms. I have Facebook to stay connected to family and TH-cam to watch funny and educational videos or to listen to music while I color or do other things. I've learned to be a responsible user... well, most of the time. My mental issues stem from good old fashioned neuroses. Yay?
Thank you for trying to make a difference. People want it to change, yet don't do anything about it. You really changed me and motivated me to not harm myself at my school.
Thank you. Just thank you for spreading awareness. I have sent this to some of my friends, thank you for coming to schools. People just don't realize how bad it is. Thank you.
The volume on this video is too quiet. I am trying to project it to my middle school class but the sound isn't good. The other videos are fine, but not this one.
I wish I could rate this as most favorite ted talk ever! I want to go completely offline/no tv no computer just a flip phone once I get done with grad school 😁

you touched on many tender places. Today I bought a 'flip phone' after three years of struggle on a 'smart' phone. I probably am addicted to youtube in these 'covid' times. I remember my son in earlier years and knowing that something was wrong in the way I parented...found a super reading 'PET Parent effectiveness Training' and got some hints about better ways of being and communicating. it's been quite a journey, more focused on looking inside myself and growing better ( I hope). The title should be "How can we start saving a generation from the toxicity of social media? Look in the mirror" I found it difficult to keep my composure throughout this talk, knowing that Colin passed away in 2020 - he was only 40. I can only hope that his message continues to reach more people and that children are being spared from the shackles of this potential virtual dystopia that has been created.
Collin needs to be a millionar. He speaks the true words that we need to here! He spoke at my school today and you could feel everyone feeling a little bit better then themselves! All you need to do is what he says I think it can change our lives forever!!
Now in 2024 the addiction is much worse. People can't even do a single thing without the use of their smartphones. I don't enjoy meeting with so-called friends anymore as they can't keep their attention for even 2 seconds without bringing out their phones. The way it's affecting the young ones is frightening. I worry about my nieces and nephews
I, by nature, was never a Social Media person myself. Even when I first got my phone, I saw Facebook. I didn't know what that was back then, so I opened it and as I tried to figure out what it was. It seemed like an interesting idea at first, but the only unanswered question that never left my mind was : "Why does it exist"? Like, we have phones and phone numbers, we communicate using those, so why do things like Facebook or Twitter or all of that exist? They seemed pointless to me. I was in sixth grade back when I got my phone. Of course, I knew of Facebook's existence way long before that. I used to play games on my mom's account on her laptop. Actually the ONLY single reason I EVER told my mom that I wanted a Facebook account was because I wanted to play those games on MY account. It had absolutely nothing to do with me wanting to "communicate" with my "friends" or anything. Right now, I am about to enter High School and I can proudly say that I am not addicted to Social Media. The only Social Media platforms I really use are TH-cam, Reddit and Whatsapp. Whatsapp for communication, TH-cam for fun and Reddit for fandoms and such. I feel weird (in a good way) that I didn't grow up with Social Media unlike most of my friends, but I am much grateful for that. I just want to say that everything technology-related is an extremely sharp double-edged sword. Social Media for example, is extremely useful for communication with people in far places, but it is also extremely addictive, and the developing companies are not helping by any means, by far, I daresay they are quit content with all of these addictions so much so that they are trying to lure you in with all the new things they add. Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Snapchat, Whatsapp. You don't need any of these, really you only need one or two accounts, but no, you actually don't need any. You could just send emails or messages for communications, and use TH-cam for videos. That's really all you need from technology, anything else is just like a lure dropped by the big companies, and most of us, unfortunately, foolishly get caught in it. For people with countless Social Media accounts, I have one question. Why? Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
I'd argue that the culture of social media is toxic, but the idea of talking to people around the world is really cool. It's just done very, very, very poorly almost 100% of the time.
This guy came too my school today and it was amazing. It was the best school assembly ive ever went. He is really good at talking too middle school kids 😂. It was very inspirational and made me want to stop using my phone. Also today I hugged all my friends for 8 seconds.
I never wanted my teens to have a cell phone until they were maybe 16. The thing that spurred me to get them a phone earlier (14-15) was the amount of school shootings. I wanted my kids to have a way to call me or authorities. What a sad day that was for me. I'm stuck between being terrified she has a cellphone at her fingertips and and being terrified if she didn't have one and something happened.
I started following Collin on Instagram several months ago and because of it I regularly delete Facebook and Instagram and have someone change my passwords. I'll take at least a few weeks at a time to take a break. Of course there are positives to having social media which is why I don't delete my accounts all together. But because I broke my social media addiction, for the first time in my life, and as a college student I might add, I got straight A's. I'm happier when I'm cut off of social media. I'm more productive. I'm more compassionate. I do more stuff like working out, reading, hanging out with friends, and writing music. People who didn't grow up with social media can't know what it does to us who did. Thanks Collin for the awesome message you're sharing.

It consumes your life. You want to be productive, you want to become successful but as soon as you touch the phone you are hooked and can’t let go.
He passed away today. :(
Thank you Collin for fighting for kids.
His wife hasn't shared yet why he died, but it was a natural death, she mentioned.

For people with countless Social Media accounts, I have one question. Why?
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
Excellent! The bottom line here is that parents need to parent and stop being afraid that your kids won't like you!!!!!
Living by example will convince and influence more people and your children more than you could try otherwise.
Rest In Peace. Your light will live on
Thank you Collin for all you are doing and saying!!!
This story has me in tears. Thank you!
Saw him talk live and he was so amazing!!! Such a good message. Thank you for sharing!!!!!
Thank you, Collin! May you R.I.P
Thank you, Collin...your insight is invaluable...even to us as grandparents!!!
Very inspirational. This makes me want social media even less then I already did!
it's about parents being absolute whimps these days..so sorry to tell their darlings NO..
So grateful for Colin's crusade!
I never wanted my teens to have a cell phone until they were maybe 16. The thing that spurred me to get them a phone earlier (14-15) was the amount of school shootings. I wanted my kids to have a way to call me or authorities. What a sad day that was for me. I'm stuck between being terrified she has a cellphone at her fingertips and and being terrified if she didn't have one and something happened.
i think a flip phone would still work
Thank you, Collin. Just thank you.
He just talked at my school and it was great
