      Oh yes indeed! I became (as very much an amateur/hobbyist) used to be able to edit photos with Photoshop and now, with Affinity, I have to learn again and these tutorials are SO precise and helpful. Unlike PS everything comes only at a price which a lot of prople (including me) cannot, do not want to afford.

    I think, if the light or sun is on the left side and make the right side of her face brighter, the right side of the picture must be brighter and not the left side. The left mountainside must be darker and the right mountainside brighter. Do I make a mistake?

    Appreciate your tutorials. After years of using PS/Lightroom professionally (photographer) I migrated to Capture One Pro about four years ago and am now seriously considering switching to Affinity Photo.
    I enjoyed your tutorial and offer only this observation (not a criticism) : the direction and elevation of the light coming from the left would catch the flat ground on the left from near the base of the hills all the way over to light up the right side hills, leaving the only left side hills in shadow with a probable highlight rim at the crest. The swimmer would also be casting a long shadow to her left (viewer's right).
    Keep up your good work.

      Very true. As she was doing it, I was thinking no, shadow on the left and lighting on the right plus some of the water to her right will be in shadow too. I'm going to download the resources and have a crack at doing just that. That all being said, I love the work of these guys so this is a minor grumble.

      I thought the same thing as I was watching it.

    • @dubbledown
      @dubbledown 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      worthy consideration, but it's not really lighting the left side background and road, even if that was the intent originally. it looks more like it's a localized light and the glowing ball on the left ended up being just that, a glowing haze, rather then a light casting itself upon the background. the light could be intense in the near proximity, hitting the face, neck, and shoulder hard, and providing the haze without ever going beyond the few feet where it wouldn't hit the other side of the road or the background scenery.
      if anything, I'd add a little shadow in the water nearer to her , and maybe some of the glow in the water itself at the ripples, only excluded by that shadow. if the light is coming from slightly above, not directly sideways, that's how I'd push for more depth in the water. if you lower the haze then you only need a little shadow in the water and no need for some golden highlights on the ripples.
      sometimes when we think too much about these details and don't just enjoy the finished project, we're stuck unable to see the proverbial forest for the trees.

    Great demonstration of image composing techniques. However, I think the lighting effect should be t he other way around: with the lightsource at the left (low sun I guess), the downward slope should be shaded and the upward slope at the right should catch the light.

    Very informative video> I do have one issue with the lighting adjustments. As done here the light falls on the swimmer from the left side of the image but on the background you made fall from the right side of the image. It's an easy mistake to make but as they say, "the devil is in the details." The procedure is excellent, just reverse the sides when adjusting the background light.

    • @cjc363636
      @cjc363636 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The small issue I have - and I don't know if I could do better - is the sun from the left 'light ball' would cut behind the model to light up the background right side grassy field. There's no nose cutting that off from the spill of light hitting that part of the background, so this wouldn't match the shadow symmetry of the model's face. To be clear, my thing is a nitpick. The photo as-is is pretty good.

    Very informative video for masking, selecting and blending techniques. I would of thought that, as the light is on the left had side of the swimmers face that the hills on the right side of the image should be illuminated by the 'golden light' and the the hills on left would be in 'shadow'.

      @AffinityRevolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Enjoying your videos. However, do you have a video of (or can add one) exposure blending? Usually for me, it's 2 or 3 images (-1, 0, +1 compensation). With most cameras these days, it easy to take 2 or more exposure compensation images. I got rid of Adobe earlier this year and would really love to view a video of blending identical images with different exposure compensation.

    Solid presentation on compositing! I have started shooting Nightscape scenes whereby I shoot separate images for the sky (like the Milky Way) and the landscape. The scene is the same but each require different exposure settings. Typically I will stack multiple images for the sky and the landscape to reduce noise. I am new to Affinity, is this the process you advise for taking the two final images of sky and landscape to blend them together?
    Thank you...

    I don‘t like that you very often select things with the keyboard instead of explaining where it is in the menus. Why? Because I use Affinity for iPad that does not have any keyboard shortcuts. So I often don‘t know what you‘re doing. How is your husband doing? Say hi please. By the way: Amazing tutorial!

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I always use keyboard shortcuts, so even I don't know where some of these things are in the menus! 😅 And Ezra is doing well, thanks for asking. 😊

    It doesn't let me paint the background back in and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. For some reason I can only select the whole picture with the mask and nut just the mask only :(
    EDIT: Fixed it, I didn't realize you had to click the icon of the image instead of the text in the layer selection. It's kind of counter intuitive.

    This is a really great video, but maybe I don't understand the lighting situation cause the light is not coming from the front it's coming from the left side, so I think the hills on the right side should be lighted, and the hills on the left side should be dark. Anyway, you did a great job. It's a cool video, and the technique is very good explained.

    Hi Ally, could you remake this tutorial from Ezra? I think the final result is not good, the abs layer needs a better blending with the model's abdomen. The tutorial's title is How To Get Six-Pack Abs in Affinity Photo. I will not write the link, since youtube seems to be deleting all links in the comments. Thanks!
