The biggest help from my dog I find is the pressure on me when my dog lies on my lap. Weight helps calm a lot, as does the soft fur when I stroke her. 😍

We bought my daughter a bison frisée (turned out to be a cross - not that it matters) and it was the best thing that we ever did. He is amazing! He runs to her EVERYTIME she hits meltdown and sits on her and licks her face until she stops or calms. She has trained him (which unbelievable beyond believe) to help meet her needs. He can not bear to be without her and she him. It’s an amazing symbiotic relationship.

I can't agree more. I am an Aspie and having a dog helped me a lot to be more confident in social situations and in calming me down instantly by only watching her sleep or cuddle with her. luckily I am allowed to bring her to work. She's not officially trained to be a service dog, but she is to me.
The second thing I agree on is that people should be trained to care for a pet. To understand and learn about the communicationsignals between dogs would help so many people to communicate better with their dogs. Many people only care about their benefit, but not so much about the needs of their pet.
My little Bella makes my life so much better in rescuing her, learning to communicate with her and trying to make her happy.
    PEACE 😁

My daughter has social anxiety disorder , panic attack disorder and depression. I bought her a Pug puppy 8 years ago and that's the best thing I ever did. She had to get up and have a routine to look after this little bundle of fur. Going for walks and playing with her dog helps lift her mood and calm her. Pleased your dog comforts you too

If you are disabled by your autism and live in the US, you can have your attending doctor or therapist write a note saying you are disabled and the animal mitigates your disability, making it an emotional support animal. Per the federal Fair Housing Act, any renter who is compliant with the FHA can't deny you housing, charge for your esa, and must provide reasonable accommodation. Do more research on it, and don't try to "register" or "certify" the esa (all registry and certification is fraudulent). Learn the laws but it is a great protection for us

That silly dog look he is adorable! I've noticed him before in background and i am so happy you included him in a video. The dog i have now was actually trained by me and she did her duty to help with my mother's depression. Since mom died she sticks to us now taking good care of my dad. Pets communicate directly through love which is the best means of communication. In Romania i haven't seen any service dogs trained for autism yet, but again, sadly Romania is generally out of date with much autism related information..

I have an assistance dog in Australia (she is QLD gov. certified). Her name is Matilda & she’s a Labrador cross. She does so much for me. I don’t always take her everywhere with me but she is trained to come to the gym, go on all forms of public transport, movie theatres, shopping malls, escalators & lifts, restaurants, hotels etc. She was really expensive to train, but she has done so much for my confidence out in public. The only problem is stopping everyone from talking to/patting her (I find the general public aren’t capable of reading the patches on her vest). It can be really annoying when I just want to get something from the shops & people want to talk to me about her.

my dog, ember, does things like that. she'll come and alert on me when i'm either having a problem that hasn't gotten out of hand or when i'm about to have a problem ... this includes when i'm about to have a meltdown, when i'm having or about to have an asthma attack (something that can cause an anxiety attack which then makes the asthma attack worse), or when my pain level is spiking and i need to take pain meds. she will also help me refocus my attention when i'm waiting for meds to take effect.
i'm in Kansas City, Missouri in the USA ... i don't see a lot of service dogs around the city at least not marked ones outside of my dog.

We have 3 dogs 1 cat, 4 fish, and a holland lop, and daily we interact with all of them, something about having them is wonderful, my dog sits right by me, and makes me feel better, she’s not trained in any way for autism, but I’ve had her for 8 years, and she seemed to respond to my needs and commands, she goes everywhere with me, and goes in if pets are allowed, she stays in the car if they are not.

hi dan, glad you put this topic up. i was diagnosed with asd about three years ago, already being in my late fourties. that diagnosis was a big relief and explained a lot and left me thinking how i could possibly tackle life instead of just watching it fly by. suddenly a lot of things are not due to personal failure anymore and things change from "why can't i do this" to "under what circumstances am i able to do this", which is a complete new and very promissing view, isn't it? i've been working dogs nearly all my life, that's my job. funny enough it never occured to me to train a dog to help me navigate my own world. about three years ago i stumbled over psychiatric service dogs in the web and decided to give it a go. two and a half years ago i bred a litter of labradors and kept four to train for ptsd and autism. i would not recommend that aproach, it's really tough. but having run this race i think i am able to give some tips to people who consider a service dog for autism.
first: don't expect miracles. you will be disappointed. a service dog is still a dog, he just comes with special features.
second: service dogs have to be trained a lot to keep everything fresh and fun. they do not know that they are supposed to be your lifeline sometimes. they perform tasks they are trained to do. so every sd handler needs to have more than a basic understanding of dog training. these dogs are highly sophistocated medical equipment. you have to know how to use them and how to maintain their working ability. if you don't, you'll end up with a very expensive pet.
third: if you plan to get a service dog get every information you can but don't believe everything you're told. it is simply not possible to train a service dog in six weeks. that's scum. there are a lot of "trainers" out there who are not knowing what they do and simply going for the money.
fourth: if you are in public with your sd, be prepared to draw attention. you will be questioned. a lot. and people will try to pet your dog and stare at it and try to distract him. you can put batches all over his vest, no use, you will still have those who obviously are not able to read.
fifth: big one. bringing a service dog in public will out you as beeing different. i personally am still batteling this one. after two years of training dogs in public i'm now quite ok with strangers asking me if i train the dog for a wheelchair bound person and getting blank looks when i say the dog works for me. people usually walk away a little embarrassed after that and you never see them again. but friends and family are really hard. if you don't disclose on them they tend to sulk because you don't "trust" them. that's when i usually decide that life is easier without them.
sixth: access issues. here in germany sd's fall under the un convention of the rights of persons with disabilities. access is granted everywhere. sais the paper. reality is a little different. just be prepared to argue for your rights. i think this aplies worldwide.
and seventh and eigth... this post is allready far to long and i appologize. it's such a huge topic.
in short: sd's are great. but they are only one part of the puzzle. they rely on you as much as you rely on them. you're a team. you take a lot of work and a huge responsibility. your dog does, too.
me personaly i'm glad i took on this adventure. it was a hell of a lot of work, it still is. it's encouraging. it's sometimes frustrating. sad. silly. embarrassing. makes you want to vanish on the spot. sends you flying ott. love it.
peace (love this one too) thanks dan for all your work, helped me a lot

I have 2 bulldogs and they help me tremendously. My son adores them and having them around definitely helps. They seem to know exactly when you need some distraction from a stressor but they are always there to make us smile and love us and sometimes that is enough.

Yes! I totally agree a service dog definitely helps with asd. I have a Pomeranian and we were a team before I had to retire him due to him just getting older and battling his own health. Tho I'm in the process of training my new Husky pup to replace him as well as my other dog I own as another back up or in certain situations.
For me, my service dogs help with social interaction, they help me focus, they tell me when I'm spacing out, they help me find my way when I get disoriented, they help me find the outside for fresh air, they can help me find a person, they do compression therapy, I don't feel soo weird and akward people staring at me, instead I know they are looking at the dog and are friendlier towards me, they help me with my hearing, there's times I think I hear some one but there's no one there and the dogs would alert me if some one is at the door, they can canvas the house/a room before I go in there too make sure its safe, they provide me with affection and remind me to laugh and smile and cuddle, they'll calm me down when I get worked up, they'll provide compression therapy and there's a ton more stuff they can do. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for them saving me. Btw we live in the u.s.

I would love to train my dog for when she has her meltdowns he's a Labrador so easy to train still a puppy though. He was cuddling up to her this morning before school and it was a successful morning too :) it would be awesome if she could go to school with him she would be happy all day I think. I'm going to look in to this more right now.

I bought my Shichon (Bichon/Shi Tzu cross) 2 years ago. They were bred specifically for Autistic children, so I figured that was perfect for me. I did look into getting her registered as an official Assistance Dog, but it costs a few thousand for the training :-( I only rarely leave the house without her.

I got diagnosed with Aspergers this year. I'm 32 now and have struggled all my life with people just thinking I was naughty or depressed. I lost my dog and have found life much harder without him. I took him everywhere with me and found him very soothing. I find animals easier to interact with than people. Thanks for all the info. I can relate to so much of it. I'm trying to make sense of this diagnosis and the videos really help. I have been told I have savant syndrome. I can memorise huge amounts of information including whole books. Plants are my fascination. Do you know much about savant syndrome and why it effects some people with Autism?
All the best big thanks Oli

Awwwwwwwww! Your Randy is absolutely GORGEOUS!
When I went to a Fun Day for Dogs Trust Manchester at Heaton Park last year to make enquiries about adopting a rescue dog after my previous pooch died. On my way back to the tram, there were two teenagers who had chihuahuas with them - and they wore vests stating they were Autism Assistance Dogs! I was impressed. Perhaps they come from Greater Manchester (like Trafford, Bury, Stockport etc.)They are out there. I wouldn't be able to get outside the door without my little pooch Rosy - who is a rescue terrier cross with a bit of corgi … and a fruitcake! I talk to her all the time, I sing to her, she's great whenever I have meltdowns ... and she sits in on my autism counselling! Unfortunately, Manchester (England) does not allow dogs on their Metrolink trams unless they are official assistance dogs for blind, deaf etc. but dogs are allowed on buses.

It is reasonable for animal therapy is appropriate that greatly benefit people with mental disabilities, even those with autism, because of the fact is that animals are much easier to communicate with and not judgemental than people. It is that animals do not have the perception skills as they do not judge themselves from being different than human beings. They continue and unknowingly live their lives without question and do not rethink themselves in doing so. In short, animal therapy is effective for people with mental disabilities that should be further recommended in animal services.

I have two rescue cats and my Doctors all don't hesitate to call them 'therapy pets' because they truly are. My girl knows to lie on my chest when the PTSD gets the better of me when I'm sleeping and I very rarely wake up from what I know was a nightmare or a terror without her lying her on my chest, giving me a concerned look and some much needed weight/pressure to calm me down. Taking care of them keeps the depression at bay too. There are a lot of days when I wouldn't have bothered to get out of bed if they didn't need feeding. It helps with the routine. They MUST get fed. They MUST be brushed. Their boxes MUST be cleaned. Their schedule keeps my schedule on track and that keeps a lot of the overwhelm and other more negative side effects of the Autism at bay. I am more functional having them in my life.

I have been looking into the possibility of having a dog registered as a Service/Assistance Animal, as my own dogs (I have four) are invaluable in helping me through situations which I find particularly difficult as well as life in general. Unfortunately, here in the UK, Assistance Dogs are only recognised/registered to assist people with physical disabilities. This means for example, that dogs who assist people with Autism/Aspergers or mental health problems are not even allowed access to certain places or modes of transport (eg aircraft cabin).

I'm going to show my doc this, because you communicate far better than me... And I have wanted a service dog for near 2 years, but everytime I try bring it up I just can't get it out.
Here in Brisbane, Qld, Australia. When I last investigated this, and in reply I am given 2 options...
    1) Pony up 30K for an already registered, vested and certified autism service animal... (which can be dog or cat, and usually is dog).
    2) Get permition from your treating doctor to allow you to register your pup at a certified service training school and a residence permit from your doc, and then train it, then pay for a test of basic commands for the learner services vest. Then you must have it in service situations as training, have it pass service assessment, pay a yearly fee of service animal registration (on top of council animal control rego) have it chipped as a service animal.
If you paid for one pre done, it is reassessment each 2 years for a certified trainer animal to stay vested... Let's not mention there is only 2 close kennels approved that I know of... Or again, do it yourself, and face reassessment each year.
Reality is... It's either a lot of money buying a random done animal... Or... Your commiting to regular training at a school with other people who you don't know who might be smelly and loud, go with lots of strange dogs and strange owners, try to train the dog in that environment without melting, and do everything else to prove your dog is at a learning vest level, and retesting every year for owner trained regardless of service level, and to top it off, it's a bit more expensive to get vested as you need a custom vest because they are not bulk order for a training kennel.
This information is true as of the time when I was enquiring, start of last year, it's suposed to be easier, and likely more expensive,
Saying this here and as a written comment is a lot easier to just type, where I can take my time, recheck it.
and yes, it's still worth it for the right person with the right dog, they become your rock! and if you can handle the commitments... I say show your officials this video and enquire for your region, and get your service animal certified and vested!

I have a Guide, Hearing & Assistance Dog certified dog in QLD Australia. I had a training package where I bought & trained my dog myself & then had weekly one on one lessons with the organisation until we passed our public access test. The training package included her learner dog vest & once she passed they swapped it for her certified dog vest, they also helped fill out all the paperwork & lodged it with the QLD government. I can’t quote for someone else’s business but the training package I had at the time was under $10k, which is still very expensive I know, but a lot less than $30k. She’s been certified for almost a year now & has been a big help. Every council is different my local council waives the registration fee for assistance dogs.

I recommend you to watch a TH-cam video subscriber named Nathan Selove because he has made service dog videos, and much like you and Randy's relationship, Nathan is also best friends with his dog Sylvia. You two would have become the best of friends because of you both share many similarities.

CAMHS use therapy dogs. Or at least they do here in Scarborough North Yorkshire. The school I was working with used dogs in our autism unit (it’s an Enhanced Mainstream School for autism) as well as library.

Here in Arizona (USA) emotional support animals aren't recognized as service animals and thus aren't allowed into schools, churches, or places of business as a service animal requires specialized training for particular ailments and Asperger's isn't one of them. If I were to try to take an emotional support animal on to an airplane (considered a place of business), I would be asked for it's certification (which must be carried at all times). If I am unable to produce it and am found in violation of the law I am subject to a $250 fine.

i have read about it a lot- since someone suggested that i get one, but there are no resources to help autistic or depressed adults with this in the US(at least that i could find). In fact i have mainly only seen programs that help only autistic kids, and ones that only help blind or deaf people. It seems most autism resources here are only for kids. It seems like most resources are just for autistic kids, and nobody cares about adults struggling(and i have seen a lot of other autistic adults having a harder time than me and not getting what they need just because they are adults).
Organizations\programs for this i researched here only seem to get dogs from breeders- but i personally think a lot of shelter puppies could benefit from the training. Looks like emphasis is put on the family line- even though that can be easily faked with purebred papers(since the breeder just has to write down the parents so the document can be sent to the registry).
i think there are just not enough SD programs out there(at least in the US) since the possible training reason(for different things the tasks may be very different of course) are so broad.

I have a cat and dog and they each do different roles to calm me. I do have difficulty when the doggy barks on occasion as it can send me into meltdown from the sound. Do you ever get that with Randy or does he not bark loudly?

    • @TheAspieWorld
      @TheAspieWorld  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes it is crazy loud, but you can train them to have more gentle barks

    • @JAMQWERT
      @JAMQWERT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have tried training her to stop barking, rather unsuccessfully.
It is really hard for me to concentrate when she barks, so training becomes a bit crazy.
I may need someone else to train her with the barking aspect.
I have trained my dog in all the quieter activities (sit, stay, back up, leave-it, fetch, come etc) but when it comes to the noise, I just can't cope. My hands go straight to my ears and I lose objectivity and direction.
It feels like my eardrums are exploding, my head starts to throb with a headache and I go into panick-mode.
I do have Bose noise-cancelling earphones which are brilliant, but the bark seems to penetrate even that technology.
Other than the barking, my dog helps get me out of the house and not be ridiculed because people are focused on her not on me.
      She is a good distraction.
Thanks for doing a video on animals. I too believe they are such a blessing as they don't judge and are unconditionally loving. It is a wonderful feeling to be loved without restriction.✔🐕🐱❤

I wish cats could be trained for this. I probably could benefit from a service animal, I have frequent meltdowns, and no calming techniques available to me (other than sleep, which isnt possible when I have to go outside). I dont like dogs. They smell bad, they have to be walked, neither of those traits is appealing to me.
