Nissan Kicks Review // This or the new Sentra?

  • The Nissan Kicks is a subcompact utility based on the Versa Note hatchback platform. Basically, automakers are giving people what they want, more utilities. Unfortunately many brands are also selling rather basic vehicles for more money. This new Nissan Kicks utility has less power at 122hp, compared the comparably priced Nissan Sentra sedan with 148hp. The Kicks has drum rear brakes, a torsion beam rear us-anion and isn't as much fun to drive and doesn't handle as well. All of that doesn't matter because buyers love small utility vehicles over sedans and hatchback vehicles. Unlike larger utility vehicles, this Kicks is not sold with AWD but competitors like the Hyundai Venue and Kia SOUl also are aonly sold with FWD. The Nissan Kicks comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all but the base and the base also has no heated front seats.

    Thank You for addressing all the negative comments regarding the CVT I own a 2019 kicks great car! I had watched your videos and others after buying my kicks and was horrified by the comments that the nissan CVT would need to be replaced I was kicking myself for buying a nissan but now am not worried at all the older CVT's did have issues but the newer CVT are fine . Great video!

    It's been 3 weeks since I took delivery of a 2020 SR Nissan Kicks, and I'm a happy camper....I hustle thru Tampa FL traffic easily, the 8 speaker Bose system is the real deal, and the youthful styling is appealing for this older guy who's over 50.

    We got a Kicks SV for my Mom in 2018 and it's a great commuter vehicle. Easy in and out, every maintenance service bill at the dealership works out to only around $70 for oil/filter change with tire rotation and the 34 MPG is nice. A taller person can fit inside and the features though basic work as they are supposed to. If you accelerate a little harder than normal the CVT switches over to simulate shifts and operates far better than the CVTs of old and it does highway speeds just fine. Just remember that in Asia and South America, their vehicles usually have like 80HP to 90HP so the fact we get 122HP is actually a premium over what's offered elsewhere. Great work Zack and Andrea.... Well mostly Andrea ;)

    Two key factors in favour of SUVs over sedans. 1) seating position. It's higher, visibility going down the road is improved. Think animals in the ditch. 2) ingress/egress. It's much easier (especially if you're a little older and have bad knees or back) to simply get in and out of a compact/mid-size SUV. The seat is already at the right height. No drop down/hop up. Every time I get in and out of a sedan, I remember a) how nice sedans feel to ride in and b) how much more I have to fold my body to get in and out of them. If my back is aching, it's tough. If my knee is bugging me, it's painful. It's just more comfortable to get in/out of an SUV.

    I'm just now finding your videos, but I really like that you guys make so many comparisons and make so many comments on various uses for the car instead of just talking about how powerful and fast the highest trim is like most of the other videos. I wish I'd found you guys earlier. I'm trying to decide now between a 2021 Kicks\Sentra or a 2022 Elantra.

    These suv and cuv cars are easier to load/unload you and your stuff in and out. Cars are lower and far more difficult to get small kids belted and buckled up. Also the seat heights of these types of cars is closer to the butt height of normally sized ppl which makes these easier to get out of.

    I believe Andrea may be on to something. I looked at the 2nd quarter sales figures for 2020 in the US. Nissan sold 9,193 Kicks, and 19, 907 Sentras! Over twice as many! And last year in the US, they sold 184,618 Sentras compared to only 58,193 Kicks. This may change with these newer models, but for now, looks like the Sentra is still “kicking” the Kicks’ butt! 😂

    I like my 2023 Kicks SV. If I had time and the Sentra SV was in stock anywhere near me, I would likely have gotten one instead. I was initially concerned about Nissan's CVT after hearing horror stories about them needing replaced prematurely but after driving a Sentra and now my Kicks, I'm hopeful. I agree that the Sentra is more sporty and powerful, with its 2L engine vs the 1.6 in the Kicks. I agree that the lack of power in the Kicks causes slower acceleration and passing, which has caused me issues on crowded highways. I've had instances where I've lost my chance to pass or merge to the right because I was accelerating too slow (I was nearly flooring it). Once I get used to my Kicks, I am sure I can overcome the slow acceleration. I do like the cargo space. I don't like that for the SV (and S), the parcel shelf cargo cover is a $300 add on that you can only get from the dealer (I'm not getting one). In the SV, I am not a fan of the hard plastic trim but I am growing to like it more and more.

      @MaestroTJS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HLMAX Toyotas are still the most reliable and durable cars on the market, although I wouldn't be surprised if they are using some crappier components now like everyone else. Everyone picks on them for using old technology but I'd rather have old tech that lasts versus new tech that doesn't. Honda has slipped badly. They've both been overpriced for a long time for what you get, that isn't surprising. At least Toyota seems to be putting nicer interiors into their cars versus that period in the late 2000's when they were really plasticky and awful. I have no doubt about the douchebaggery you'd encounter at a dealership--typical among companies that own the market.

    Nissan Versa Note was a great bargain for a city commuter car. Kicks exterior I like. The look of the infotainment system & climate control cannot even compare to other brands.
    For the money and looks, I prefer the Hyundai Venue and would pay more for KIA Soul. I've only test drove the 2020 Soul.
    These smaller utility vehicles actually have smaller cargo space than hatchbacks with the seats up.

  • @formsguy100
    @formsguy100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have looked at the Kicks, but I had a Versa for nine years. As good a car as the Versa was for that time in my life, I don't want a glorified Versa. I agree with Zack. I think the Kicks will outsell the Sentra because that's how we roll these days. But hands down, the Sentra is a way better car. Ride quality with the independent rear suspension along with a longer wheel base, interior quality, overall looks, a bit more horsepower, and some more content comparing the SV packages give the Sentra the nod. Oh... about the previous generation Sentra, I have a 2017. Zack and other auto journalists pan this generation, but I really like mine. I will say it is not my dream car, but for the money, it is a great car. It is not as much fun as my daughter's Mazda 3, but I love the interior space it offers for a tall guy like me.

      From engineering POV, you can argue CVT is superior - it is more efficient, while delivering smooth, constant power. But in most passenger vehicle application, it can be “annoying” if it is not tuned properly.
      My first experience with CVT was with my wife’s current 2011 Rogue. Like you, I hated it (still don’t really like it). But now, I have a 2017 RAV4 Hybrid, and I absolutely love it’s eCVT. Partly (probably) because of its electric motors.

It wasn't uncommon to see Nissan cvt's go out in 20-30k and at times need repair / replacement 3 times in 100k. According to reliability reports it hasn't been a standout issue in the last 3 years, but when you get that reputation year over year for so long it will be difficult for Nissan to kick it... so to speak.

    I'm an early 30s, so a total millennial, and I would take a sedan over an SUV/CUV any day! Generally, the comparably engineered sedan will handle better and be more fun to drive due to the lower center of gravity. The X3M is quite fun to drive, however, as one exception, so car manufacturers are getting better at making the sport CUV class drive much more like sports sedans.

      I bought a sedan (midsize). Never again. They are totally useless for putting things into them. Even something as small as a computer printer would need to come out of the box before you attempted putting it into the car. One time, I had a long box (about 5 feet) that was only about 6 inches high that wouldn't fit into the trunk even with the back seats folded. That had to come out of the box too. My previous two cars were hatchbacks and you could move decently large pieces of furniture in them. You are right about better handling and so on, but the cargo compromise is a deal-killer for me in the future. I'd love a world populated by more hatches and wagons, but no one else agrees, so an SUV it will be, I guess.

    I think too much is put into HP. Clearly if you are considering a compact SUV you have other options with more HP (Kona, CX30, RVR, etc.), but the Kicks offers a lot of additional options which I find are lacking with some of the others (climate control, push start, etc.). The one thing you completely left out is cargo space. The Kicks has 25 cu ft of trunk space which compared to the Kona (19 cu ft) and others is great. While the rear seats do not go down completely flat, they offer a lot more room. If you want to be able to pass trucks on the highway like a sports car, get something bigger. If you want to go 0-60 (100 km/h) is less than 7 seconds, go bigger. Otherwise, this will more than do for most people.

    There are so many things I like and despise about this car. I love that it's a small CUV that gets the job done. It has leather interior and has Nissan's famous gravity seats that just hugs you in every way. The driving dynamics are pretty good for what it offers and the value for this car is incredible.
    My issues with this car is the lack of power seats on the top trim, The ridiculously small engine on a car that needs more HP, the extremely gimmicky speakers on the headrest is the biggest of them all. Combining the likes and dislikes, it honestly makes it hard to pull a trigger on it. The value proposition is not as appealing but man oh man if you can get beyond the gimmicks and lack of features, it can be an extremely good car to buy...just not for me.

      They are not direct competitors. Per insurance terms, the Kicks is a CSW (compact sport wagon) whereas the Soul is a CUV (compact utility vehicle). Including an e-Power version, with the electric motor from the Leaf diving the wheels and the 1.2 3-pot from the Note acting as a generator to keep the battery under the front seats alive. No transmission at all, you drive electric all the time. Very interesting system but inly in Japan so far ― where it sells very well. Nissan now supply their 1.6 engine, naturally aspirated, together with the Leaf electric motor to Renault in Europe. Renault then adds a very complicated clutchless 6-speed transmission to this combination. Goes on sale in Europe in the last quarter of 2020, which may be a reason why Nissan don't sell their e-Power models in Europa.

Even when there is fresh pavement here there's always a place to go with a crap road in need of maintenance or snow clearing.
