The 2023 Nissan Versa SR Is Affordable Transportation That Doesn’t Feel Cheap

- New cars have become extremely expensive in the last few years leaving a lot of consumers to feel like a brand new vehicle is out of reach. Thankfully, the latest #NissanVersa is still one of the most affordable brand new cars on the market. #Nissan has made some updates for 2023 and the #VersaSR is an economy sub-compact car that doesn't feel inexpensive.

I helped my daughter pick this car for her first vehicle. She didn't care about anything other than the cost. (she is not a "car person") To me, it seemed reasonably equipped for its price point, somewhat reliable and cheap to operate. She has all the safety features she can use and a new car with warranty in case anything goes wrong with it. Not everyone is looking for 0-60 times or slalom times, as a matter of fact I'd say most people just want something that will do the daily commute efficiently, safely and at minimal cost to them.
I drove this and the Corolla. Barely more money for better build quality and resale value. Ended up going with a different car altogether, but both of these cars are good choices overall. 👌
Actually the similarly equipped Corolla here was way more than this Versa. I actually wanted her to get a Corolla but there was a big price difference for the same level of equipment :)
@@venictos
Here in Dallas, new Corollas are going for 5k over MSRP. This is because Corollas are in extremely high demand and low supply. So in the real world, the Versa is much cheaper than a Corolla.
I need a V8 with 523 hp from BMW with real wood and Italian Napa leather.
There's a reason for the huge price difference, you get what you pay for.@@LSDOGWALKER
I just recently bought my first Versa.
Sometimes you'll buy an inexpensive item & you'll say to yourself, "I can see why this was so cheap."
But every now & then you'll buy an inexpensive item & you'll say, "This was a great deal for the money!"
The Versa feels like a great deal.
I had many expensive vehicles in the past and present still not satisfied with them. I recently bought a used 2013 370z comes with many upgrades still unhappy, so I decided to trade for 2024 Versa SR with many features and I love it since. Will see how the vehicle last until break down. 😄
It may not be exciting but its nice to see a low cost NEW vehicle on the market
What!? He's reviewing a car!? A subcompact one at that! I thought that there were only SUVs left in the world!
Both honda civic and toyota corolla have more power and same or better fuel economy. Not to mention the reliability and lower cost of ownership. Peronally i would spend a few thousands more and get one of those.
Here in Dallas, both the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla have dealer markups, which means you pay several thousand over MSRP. On the other hand, I can buy a new Nissan Versa for $500 under MSRP. So the price gap is big.
@@elitedelta9001Same here but I would spend extra $5000 for a BMW base 3 series 😉
BAM!@@elitedelta9001
0-60 in versa? Are you serious? Versa buyers do not care ab 0-60, they are buying versa to go from point A to point B
TBH the Versa meets most peoples need. I'd take a port-injected, naturally aspirated I4 over direct-injected, turbo I3. Too bad about the Xtronic CVT. Thanks Sofyan! Hope the Versa is a sales success.
I do think the CVT hate is overblown. Take good care of it and hope if anything bad does happen, that it happens within warranty. I've had two nissans with CVTs with well over 180K miles, no issues. Should last most people a good amount of time before it starts to cost anything- if it even does.
@@devongee1776you've got the point. CVT transmissions are kinda like turbo machines, they're much more prone to bad maintenance. If we are not into periodic car service, take some time and extra effort to use the manual transmission with more than $1k sticker price saving and lower maintenance cost. My daily driver's car is a 16 year old 3 row Versa with manual transmission and it's still nice. Not only Nissan, but my family also got Honda & Toyota so I know what I'm saying
Shame on Bidens economy, THIS is all we can afford now
@@Brian_Eugene_LeeI also think Hyundai’s IVT transmission is also a good CVT with a metal belt rather than the typical rubber belt in most CVTs.
Honda nd their crappy 1.5 turbo blowing head gaskets before 100K miles
Wow, Nissan really does add on the creature comforts! For $16K starting, a multimedia screen, heated seats- and a new car😊- it's pretty incredible. Especially since a lot of used cars aren't priced this low. Thanks for this overview, excellent review as always!
And Reliable! Usually cars this cheap are garbage, but these will last a very long time if taken care of like any other car.
@@codykerstin3439 I love my Versa SR trim so beautiful than my 2019 X2 lol 😬
@@SAOKAROLINA I was close to getting one, but I got a used Mazda instead. Just got a need. But, that model was high on my list.
Versa's can be hard to find for this very reason and I think many people end up spending a bit more on a Sentra. When money is tight, jumping up to a Crosstrek or something isn't an option, forcing people into the used market which has it's own issues.
"Nissan does CVT's well"??? Nissan is the one car manufacturer that has had large numbers of failures with their Jatco brand of CVT's that they use!
And it not going away. Not the company fault if folks are non-car people
Thank you so much Sofyan for reviewing affordable cars as well! Many of us Americans are struggling financially and we desperately need more affordable new cars! As an low income working class American who needs an affordable new fuel efficient car under warranty, the Nissan Versa is definitely on my list!
Sofyan CONTRIBUTED to our *INFLATION* by voting 🗳️ for Biden! The irony is jaw dropping 😅
@@minipandora22 It doesn't really matter who's in office, inflation has been on a nonstop increase for the past few administrations.
What matters is who would be willing to help everyone else keep up financially, which none of the last few administrations have done so far.
@@dave_riots Joe Bidens INFLATION is the highest it’s been on over 50 years, SHAME ON HIM. shame shame shame.
@@minipandora22you obviously have 0 knowledge of how finance and economics works 🤡
@dave_riots the first thing Biden did was cut the Keystone pipeline, which immediately raised gas prices, which led to higher shipping cost, which led to higher prices for goods.
It also put about 4,000 people out of good paying jobs. The pipeline was also the most efficient and safest way of transporting petroleum.
There was not one upside of cutting the pipeline.
Kudos to Nissan for offering something that is still affordable. Basic transportation is still needed in many scenarios.
@angrypenguin956 Exactly, and who would expect 0-60 in 3 seconds in this car?
@@stevenwells5069 And even so if you are looking for speed don't even think about getting a VERSA of all cars..
$23k for this new is a bargain in 2023. Everything is expensive right now, at least in CA
Yeah $23k is just a steal tbh ~~
That car is a piece of shi . Any new car that cant go 3 years without breaking is a Pos.
Sure this car is not powerful, but it meets most people’s needs, and it is a very light car so it actually feels peppy for just normal driving situations. Also 32 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway is excellent. People will be saving a lot of money with this car in terms of fuel costs. Also i love with how simple this car is in the inside. Nothing fancy and it will be very easy to use for pretty much anyone. It’s nice that Nissan still offers a subcompact sedan since there aren’t that many options in this class anymore.
Thank God Nissan keeps this car going. Manu people can’t afford a new car and the fact that you can get a brand new car that has apple car play and power everything and it be in the $300 month range is a blessing. The Corolla used to be an amazing option but are no longer under $20k. Versa SV is the best option. We need more affordable cars like this!!!
I completely agree! New Corollas have become expensive, especially with the dealer markup and pre-installed accessories.
@@braetonwilson4296Go Versa go! 😄
I just purchased SR trim love it!😊
I have owned many cars and have never felt the need to tap one the dashboard for a sense of quality. How many times do you need to mention the cars "cheapness?"
It's amazing how much you can get for your money in a vehicle.
By the way, I remember in the 80's if a car could break ten seconds in a 0-60 run it was relatively quick.
With all the very expensive cars you review,...I'm glad to see you also do these very inexpensive cars for those who can't afford much. As _for_ this car,...it would be a "no" for me, but [again] for those who can't afford much, this car is definitely worth considering.
I concur, for 22K, I'd go with a couple of years old camry or a newish civic. Shoot, you could even get a cx5.
@@venictos Oh......MOST definitely. A lightly used car would be my choice as well. My current car is a Certified Used Honda. Having said that, as of right now, I wouldn't be getting a Certified Used Honda because my local store has prices of used Honda that are higher than when they were new. Used car market is outrageous at the moment.
Lightly used cars cost more than new cars right now. So I would rather buy a brand new car. Plus buying an used car is risky because you don't know how the previous owners drove it.
I can see his disappointment though 😂
Dam son
High rev hang
Valve float much !!!
Flat ground ?
That poor piece of shit engine
+ CVT = weak sauce
Warranty ??
Anyone really that desperate to own this ?
I wished Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru would offer a NO tech,
NO frills, basic manual, I4
direct injection turbo..🙏
One of my first cars back in the '60's was a Mercury Comet (the Mercury version of the Ford Falcon) with an 85 HP 6 cylinder engine that required a whoppin' 20 seconds to reach 60. The 2-speed automatic contributed to the car's sloth. We've come a long way when today's slowest cars take half the time to reach 60. I also had a 64 Malibu SS 283 V8, also with a crappy 2-speed automatic. It was blazingly fast compared with the Comet but 3 seconds slower than the Versa in this review.
I love these affordable, basic vehicles. I drove my 2000 Mazda Protege for 17 years (until it was T-boned and totalled). It had 1.8L engine, 122 hp and around the same torque. I never felt like it lacked power since I mostly drove it in the city. On the highway, it had no problem getting up to speed or staying with the traffic. I loved the comfort of the interior, the seats were comfy. It looked absolutely lux compared to a lot of cars now (new cars have way more plastic all over inside). Gas mileage wasn't great compared to vehicles from today. Miss that car.
I had a 2015 Versa Note and we loved it. Great gas mileage and very reliable. This will be one I’ll look into for my daughter. Who wants only a car for getting from a to b. Which is perfect
You can breath a little, no need to say 500 words per second
Coming to a rental fleet near you 😂.
“your Uber has arrived”
@@tinhinnh Valid and so true!
Hahaha 16k car has the range of a 40k+ EV , this is actually ICE showing why it's still ahead of EV
Exactly my thought. If I were in a tight budget situation I would not hesitate to buy the cheapest new Versa in manual. $17k + tax fee and it will get me from point a to point b in a relatively safe and comfort manner. Sure it does not have the creature comfort but beats buying a $40k car with $1k payment per month.
Thanks guys. I commented approx 4 months ago, that it would be nice so see some of your great reviews for some lower end vehicles.
The only new car I ever bought was a 1994 Ford Aspire, I think it was made by Kia? It was an adorable little Jellybean in Teal. Very 90's. Nice to see small easy drive and buy cars still out there.
Nissan and good CVTs should never be in the same sentence
Wow it's as long as an 8th Gen Civic! Economy cars have grown
Imagine complaining about materials in an economy car.
It's got all the necessities to do its job at an very affordable price, no complains!!!!!
This vehicle is extremely popular in Dubai, UAE. The majority of people own either a Toyota Yaris or a Sunny (VERSA), particularly those who primarily use cars for city purposes. And honestly, it is a good vehicle considering its price point. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, air conditioning, two charging ports, and good mileage, even if it's not a hybrid. Most buyers of this car are individuals who use it solely for commuting to work, and it fulfills this purpose well, especially considering its compatibility with cheap fuel.
I wish the Toyota Yaris was still offered in the US.
thundergato, I agree, i'm so jealous of Dubai folks! Here in the US we have plenty of expensive cars on sale but very very few affordable cars. That's why many Americans take 7 year car loans to pay off their cars.
@@braetonwilson4296 Most of the people who buy a car also usually get a loan and the standard here is 5 years. I would be really happy if Hilux was offered in the US as it was the original Toyota which earned the name “Indestructible”, but Toyota only likes to sell expensive vehicles in US and Europe another example is the new iconic Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series and the list goes on.
frankly id rather get a used corolla or civic before i buy a new versa
“0-60 is probably just a yes” 😂
I said that already
Can’t get out of its own way with that lawnmower engine. Not safe imo because of that. Not talking having passengers as well. No thanks. And Nissan does not do CVT’s well. They are complete crap and still fail all the time.
This Nissan Versa is faster than several other cars like the Mitsubishi Mirage and Honda HR-V. The Versa has a small engine but is also light weight.
0-60 does not matter to these kind of cars because they are low powered but have very good range.
"Top speed: Probably" 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 122 HP, so you can’t expect anything ~~ my Venue has the same power as this car but it’s actually quite adequate for me
My '15 5 speed I've had over 120. It's not as slow as most people think.
Definitely don't get the cvt trans unless your leasing it lol
Yep it’s trash and last about 6 years
@@90MVtvthese new ones are totally different from those old ones....you don't know what you're talking about
sadly my mom is someone who could just afford this. so i get its purpose. I hope it stays around with that price.
The Nissan versa is being discontinued in 2025
I dunno why people care about the 0-60. Every time I’m waiting at the light and as soon as it changes green no one in nicer cars accelerates. They go slow as balls for the longest time before even speeding.
Not worth the trouble of the transmission
The 0-60 is a YES🤣🤣 I do believe it owning a 2016 Nissan Sentra SR with the CVT, but ngl it’s been very reliable.
not bad , honestly this is all people want and need . regular car, AC, apple car play , good on gas . Im a toyota type of person but if i was tight on cash or didn't care about cars i would get this
The 2023 Nissan Vera SR is a nice smooth drive. Feels good driving, easy steering. Gas mileage is great! You don't have to put all your money in the tank. Take off is okay, not great but it will work it's way up decently. You have pretty good speed after the first take off. If you need a car to get you here and there with great gas mileage and comfortable enough, this is it. Looks are very nice. One flaw with Nissans, after ten years their transmissions give out. They are known for that. A car salesman will strive to get you to buy a new car, somewhat sneakily. Watch for that and how you finance it. The salesman will do it for his gain but not for your good intrest. Price isn't all that cheap. The cars are over twenty two thousand. Your lucky to get them down to eighteen and a half thousand. To me that's not cheap but more affordable then most cars. That's the right way to say that. Not cheap but more affordable in these days and times. Nothing cheap in price!
“Doesn’t feel cheap” but all here is “cheap, cheap, cheap”. It’s a Nissan and not Benz. We get it.
Honesty if price is the concern i would take the 2024 chevy trax LS for 22k. It looks nicer and has a conventional transmission instead of a cvt
I think all companies that don’t make cars under $20k should spend millions on public transportation infrastructure in car dependent areas
I support that! Great idea!
Communist much ??
@@408SPLKINGS that’s not how communism works. They fund the roads and used their power to make our cities car dependent, it’s only fair they either give us some means to survive or fuck off
My grandpa has a 20 SV and it’s not a bad (sub)compact car. Gas is comparable to my 18 Altima and it’s comfortable. I’m over 6’ and 300 pounds and have plenty of room.
I enjoy your tutorial of the economy family segment. You give the small little compact car a chance. My daughter has one & cried it had no power. I said it's not made for speed, it's made for good mpg's
That's a blessing in disguise, no erratic driving but do teach her how to merge properly.
I hope Nissan doesn't stop making the Versa. It offers a lot for the money 😢. Those turbo engines will probably not last long though. I hate anything turbo myself since I keep my cars 260k plus miles
You say it's a 17,000$ car but I would have liked that you mention the price of the version you show on camera which is several thousand dollars more.
Edit: Ok so the price is mentioned at the very end. 5,000$ is a lot of extra money for the highest trim, not really worth it.
don't those lunches destroy cvts? Also my car is a sentra b16 15 years old, cvt stil original and working
It’s honestly refreshing to see a review on an economy car like this. It gives a good insight on how far these things are coming along.
Nissan used to offer a turbo 1.6, this car could use the extra horsepower and torque....
The only good Versa is the Manual. That's the one to buy. P.S. The top speed isn't under 100. It's 119mph.
The SR trim adds lots of features and better seating materials. The base model is VERY stark.....😮 I'd step up to a Kia Soul S or a Chevy Trax
Absolutely understand people out there need affordable cars. Models like this are ubiquitous for a reason- they serve an important purpose. My problem with this car, and cars like it, is they don't last. I give this a year and it's creaking and squeaking and rattling inside. I know car reviewers can't attest to that since they only get these testers for a short time but we all know how it goes with cheap cars like this.
True. If Toyota brought back the Yaris, I would choose that over the Versa hands down. I want a small affordable car thats built to last, not a cheap throw-away car that will have issues 3 years down the road
Bring the subcompact segment back
Not the car I want, but it is nice for you to review vehicles that only some can afford. Always appreciate your honesty! One more thing and I wished Nissan would listen, leave the CVT to the Versa, Sentra and Rogue. The CVT does not belong in anything else they build or at least make an automatic an option.
Manual only on S trim, which has no CarPlay, and the deal breaker, rear seats do not fold down.
I had a 2011 Versa hatchback and really liked it, although my base model didn't have the CVT so the MPGs were surprisingly bad for a subcompact, something like 30 mpg combined. It had a nice ride and wasn't too loud on the road. I needed inexpensive, had just gotten my MA in Spain, I wanted an inexpensive European-looking car. I paid around $16k for it brand new.
I just got my new nissan versa sr 4/3/2024. I love it. ❤️
It may not be a BMW M340i, but it beats catching the city bus!😂
They copied 9th civic
One of my fav channels. I went to dealer to get one they sold them all. They said to get one buy it for 4th July sale. Ended up getting Sentra SV for 1500 more. Overall happy but limited selection during Labor Day sale.
This car (and nissan kicks) are nissans only cars I would get with the CVT.
@@Brian_Eugene_Lee according to my experience, modern CVT transmissions are not that bad, yet older CVT at any non Nissan cars are also not that good. Just take the 5 speed manual and we are good to go
@@Brian_Eugene_Lee no problem, just feel free to block me as long as I'm telling fact. Here in Indonesia, Honda did the same blunder as Nissan to introduce CVT too early. Look at how the Mobilio was and is still a flop so that Honda has been forced to change the branding only because Honda's bad early CVT. The Mobilio is kinda discontinued and being rebranded to BR-V, which is still not the best seller in its class
awang I'm a big fan of the Indonesian movies Raid and Raid 2 Redemption!
@@Brian_Eugene_Lee- Toyotas CVTs are garbage. My 2016 corolla's died at 78K miles. Feel free to block me if you wish, it'll just make you come off as a Yota and Honda fangirl to us here
If you like small, reliable, easy to repair cars with manual transmissions, the versa is probably your last chance to buy a car like that new. I've been hearing that because of new US government regulations the subcompact class is pretty much going to go away because the cost to make these cars compliant will make them as expensive as their compact siblings, so why continue to offer them is the logic automakers are going with.
Exactly. The EPA is a giant scam, how can they claim to care about the environment when they make regulations which punishes small economy cars and push everyone into big polluting SUVs.
Good to see a review of affordable car. Everyone can't afford a $50k new car whether financed or leased.
Everyone is spoiled today. Back in the 90’s when I needed the cheapest new car my poor ass could afford to replace my old deathtrap, cheap was no power steering, vinyl seats, wind up windows and manual locks, one outside mirror, sealed beam halogen headlights, no ac or radio, and 13” steelies. Oh and the airbag was only available on higher trims…
You're forgetting that your car from the nineties was much much cheaper than today's cars. Sell a new bare bones car today with wind up windows, manual locks, small wheels etc. for 15k and it will be sold out. Problem is, greedy carmakers refuse to make bare bones cars, they'd rather add all these features and charge you an arm and leg for it.
Not bad for the price. This probably a car that local shop could fix without going to a dealer so your price plus maintenance cost could be cheaper than a 30k car.
22K for a fully loaded SR? I would rather get a base civic or Corolla.
Test a mirage!!! Please?
He won't lol

It actually looks quite sexy apart from the slight bulky appearance
I am a "car guy"; an 80s kid who drooled over the AMG Hammer, 911 Whale Tail, M3 Lightweight, etc. I've owned '91 NSX, C7, Jag XKR and XJ Supercharged. I’m done with Nissan !! They have to change their line up !! I have a 2019 kicks sr and that new versa looks the same !! All Nissan cars look the same !!
this tech included in this car would have been luxury stuff 10 years ago…
Question: If you were to purchase a new '24 sedan today which would you go for: the Versa SR or the Chevrolet Malibu top of the line? Please share your enlightened verdict. Thanks! 🙏♐
There's a higher supply of the Malibu and you can score a bigger discount on the Malibu. Chevy dealers will take 3-4k off a Malibu's price but you'll be lucky to get $500 off a Versa's price. So I would choose the discounted Malibu
I have been looking for a good used car for my son’s first car. Prices are coming down slowly, but it still seems hard to find a rust-free car with less than 120k miles for under $10k. A $16,000 base Versa frankly sounds like a good alternative, though they are probably unicorns in the real world. Working A/C, power windows and locks, Bluetooth, a decent stereo, and a warranty. A manual transmission would also make this model a bit more engaging and likely last longer than the CVT as well.
Just bought a Nissan Versa, manual. Had to give up a couple of creature comforts that I wanted, but I don't have to worry about a CVT. The engine is a tried and fairly true design, from what I understand. Under $20,000 out the door for a brand new car. The dealership includes (in writing) a lifetime power train warranty. Engine, transmission, drive axle - $100 deductible for as long as I own the Versa - no mileage limit.
I did have to search for two months to find a Manual transmission in stock. Nissan and their dealers are doing themselves a disservice by limiting the manual transmission vehicle so severely - both in the numbers produced/stocked, and in the limits to what everyday options that are offered with the manual transmission. I don't understand that, other than that they are trying to eliminate manual transmissions.
The engine screaming for the godsss🤣
Under 100mph lol, it can do 120mph computer limited. Even the mirage can do 100mph but it is computer limited to 100.
Nissan is actually selling the cheapest Japanese car AND the most expensive Japanese car in the US market, just a fun fact XD
Inflation…capitalism, whatever you want to call it, a BASE Honda Civic, will soon be $50,000!
you're sadly right, cars have become a luxury
can't wait to see these on the road with the bumper falling off, last oil change done at 0 miles. Camping their ass on the left lane trying to go 90 mph for with 4 different Chinese brand tires.

0-60? Yes 😂
It is affordable until the CVT transmission goes out.DO NOT PURCHASE!!!

Again it's not cheap it's a less value value car
