When I was young, broke, and kinda dumb and couldn't afford my CCW or a decent gun. I open carried a hi-point 9mm (go ahead and laugh, I am laughing at myself looking back) the holster that I used would always pop the mag out so I carried it with one in the chamber and the mag in a pouch beside it. I didn't really think tactfully, until I was standing in line one day and just felt someone lift up on it. I quickly placed my hand on my gun spun around and was waiting for a fight. It was a State Trooper, who just stepped back a little waiting for that exact reaction. He just smiled once I realized it was a cop and said yea, that could have ended badly for ya kid. After we both checked out we stood around and talked about the situation, the gun, and he gave me a lot of advice. Even showed me how easily he could have gotten my gun before I even realized what was going on. He wasn't giving me crap about using my 2A right, but gave me advice about how to better exercise it and do it more safely. Gave me a few suggestions (1st was get rid of the hi-point) along with some more affordable guns that I could get and some decent holsters. I actually forgot about that event until I came across this video, and while I am still not carrying the most expensive gun on the market, I have a decent one that I can CC and a holster that provides some protection from someone grabbing it.

As long as you get a good magazine, they're decent shooters and can be incredibly reliable.
And if you run out of ammo, they're a pretty good bludgeon.
Way too heavy for daily carry though!

It blew my mind how many people thought that they would be better off open carrying, even after my insight. This one guy came in with one hanging off his hip that looked a quater the size of his whole body. I told him he's a target. After explaining to him the possibilities, he said he is always got his head on a swivel and always watching so that don't happen. I informed him that as he stood there telling me all this, 7 different people had been either standing behind him or walked right up on him without him even noticing. 100% right!! "something is always going to break your attention at some point."
It doesn't take much distraction to make an open carrier a major target. Even just trying to check out in line causes distraction that can be deadly - as can be seen in this video.

It was like he wanted people to know that he was a carrier. But man the way you shared your knowledge about this matter was spot on, because if I'm carrier I don't won't to stand out, but to be quiet and quick about any situation that may accrue that I may have to use lethal force. So one day while heading out fishing I was open-carrying and went to the convenience store to get some worms. I got out of my truck and got halfway across the parking lot from the gas pumps and realized I forgot to bring in my isolated cup that I was going to refill. I turned around and saw this woman who had just gotten out of her car. She looked directly at me. She suddenly stopped, turned around and almost ran to her husband who was about to pump some gas. I open carry a lot. And I do it for multiple reasons. I carry that way sometimes because as an armed guard that’s what I trained how to draw from and I’m just more proficient with taking it out of a als/sls holster than even a friction retention under a cover garment. Another reason i do it is because of what you said. Many people don’t see it often or don’t know it’s legal. I’ve had many people come ask me questions and I invite that. I answer them and they seem to be relieved at my answers. One lady asked if it was legal. Another asked if I was worried about getting it taken because she didn’t know the difference between types of holsters. My point is it generates good conversations. I also go out of my way to be even more nice and accommodating while open carrying as I want to change the perspective on those who walk around with a gun. A lot of people now associate guns with bad guys. But how does it look when the same nice guy walks into the store and always has a good interaction with everyone? Now I’m not saying I don’t agree with carrying concealed as I do it it places that I find rough. So when the benefits don’t outweigh the issues. But I don’t like the demonizing ( not saying you’re doing that colion but I’ve seen a lot of others do it) of open carry.

Nowadays, in AZ, people are calling the police on anyone carrying a gun carrying openly. Tying up police with these stupid calls when they could be at a serious call. There are so many false alerts, but they have to respond in case it's real!

If you do open carry, I think you should:
    1) Have very good situational awareness (You should do this rather you carry or not).
    2) Use a Retention Holster with some looking device like a Retention hood.
    3) Have a backup concealed.
    4) Carry it where it's easy to defend from people taking it.

As an open carrier, two things are a must: 1) a good holster WITH MANUAL RETENTION; and 2) situational awareness. Contrary to popular belief, open carry is a deterrent if you are aware of your surroundings and only if you’re not in a gang infested area. I usually conceal carry when I’m carrying in areas that say no guns allowed. *it’s not a crime in my state. And even when conceal carrying, situational awareness is still a must.

@@alrhodes05 You are incorrect. I live in the state of Virginia. And here it is not a crime unless it’s a school or government building like the courthouse for example. All they can do is ask you to leave if they catch you. And if you refuse, all they can do is trespass you. I’m not willing to fall victim to a mass shooter, so I will carry in gun free zones. Either way, restrictions on where you can carry is an infringement.

Case in point: the young man (18 or 19 years old) who was carrying a Glock pistol inside a mall and stopped the rainbow-warrior mass shooter in the food court. Carrying on private property (non-Federal, non-hospital, not K-12 school) only gets you trespassed.
By the way, that mall had signs at thd entrances saying "no guns allowed".

“only if you’re not in a gang infested area” so it’s not useful in the main areas you might actually need it? Whats the point of open carry then apart from hunting or the range?

    • @jimc4267
      @jimc4267 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@nra4ever2011 Good question. Gangs heavily outnumber you and are looking for conflict. Your normal everyday criminals are usually looking for victims and don’t want competition. If they walk into a store with intention to rob and see someone inside with a gun, they will probably leave and go to another place to rob because they face challenge at this one. I was at a grocery store in the parking lot one day with my gun on my right hip. Two guys approached me from the left and said “yo, you got any cash on you?” When I turned toward them they both saw my gun. And before I could answer, they stopped in their tracks and said “have a good day bro.” Then turned around and walked away. Most of the time they don’t want competition; they want easy targets (victims). People who carry guns are not easy targets especially when you’re aware of your surroundings. If you appear unarmed, you are more likely to be approached by a criminal than an open carrier. And before you mention the element of surprise with conceal carry, the best way to win a fight is to avoid one.

@@Jorge-jh9loknife on the back of the belt is something done by some military personnel when deployed. It keeps it off the front, so if a position gets overrun and you wind up in hand to hand, an enemy can’t grab the knife off your chest rig to stab you with it. The other option is worn to either hip, but other stuff like pistols or aid kits may take that spot.
