  • Welcome to our latest travel vlog where we explore the journey from Hat Yai in Thailand to Butterworth in Penang. In this exciting adventure, we travel by land and experience the beauty of two neighboring countries while crossing the border from Thailand to Malaysia.
Our journey started by taking two trains, which made for a unique experience in itself. We made our way from Hat Yai to Padang Besar where we exited Thailand through immigration. The process was smooth, and the officers were friendly and efficient. After clearing immigration, we boarded another train that took us from Padang Besar to Butterworth, Malaysia.
The train ride was scenic and filled with the lush greenery of the countryside. We were amazed by the beauty of the scenery, and it was an excellent way to experience the local culture. The best part was that the entire journey cost us less than $5, which is a steal considering the distance we covered and the experience we had.
After reaching Butterworth, we hopped on a ferry to get to the island of Penang. The ferry ride was a perfect end to the journey, offering breathtaking views of the Strait of Malacca and the island's stunning skyline.
If you're planning on traveling from Thailand to Malaysia, we highly recommend taking this journey. It's an affordable and exciting way to explore two neighboring countries, experience the local culture, and cross the border while enjoying scenic views along the way. I was on this route in 2008 and the train momentarily derailed. I'm not 100% sure what happened but some of the wheels must have come off the rail line. I was sitting there watching everything go past out the window and the next moment my end of the car was in the air, it was like the back end of the rail car just jumped in the air for a moment. Then after that the train came to a sudden stop and these military guys came into our car and were looking around. After about 15 minutes we started moving again. We had already crossed into Thailand at that point. I still to this day wonder what the hell happened.

Were going to have more questions in future, so be ready 😊 on this video, we can't find the train from Hat ya to Panang on 12go Asia and other sites.. can you give us the info? Send our love and appreciation to Jerry as well.

We visited the train station in Hat Yai the day before we travelled and were told that it's common to just arrive at the station on the day of travel and purchase the tickets there and then. ;-)

There's a limit of how many times for non Thai/Malaysia citizen for land border cross. However you're recommended to prepare enough MYR cash for transaction. You may find Airbnb outside KL such as pj, Wangsa Maju, USJ or kelana jaya. Which area easy for grab coverage or near to lrt/mrt/monorel station access. Distance to KL less than an hour depends which location you're staying.

Train from Padang Besar to kl takes about 5.30 hr. I don't know how long it would take from hatyai to padang besar. Anyway why do you want to go straight to KL, have a detour to Langkawi or Penang and from there take a 45mins to 1hr flight into KL. Though, if u prefer train travel have a detour in Kuala Kangsar/Taiping also Ipo

I think MoT Anthony loke need to make a proposal to the government to install some escalators in KTM Padang Besar Station to ease local n foreign tourists to enter our country from Thailand n verse versa.
If the lift n escalator available in this KTM Padang Besar Station local n foreign tourists no need to lift their bagage on hand to step the concrete ladder.
MoT Anthony loke just talk much, but no result...cakap xsama bikin.
