You can find the cable used here. amzn.to/4bInV07 The software used to program your Baofeng radio. I used the UV-17R download for the 5RM. www.baofengradio.com/pages/download
For those making comments that it gave them an error, I got this procedure to work: Go into CHIRP-next and go to the radio settings, change the startup splash screen from the default Baofeng picture "logo" to "battery voltage". (Now when you start up the radio, instead of displaying a picture, it will simply say "Battery 7.8 Volts".) Now follow the procedure he has outlined in this video to upload your bitmap to the radio. Then exit the program and restart CHIRP-next. Change the setting back from "battery voltage" to "logo". This worked for me, first time. If it's merely a coincidence and had nothing to do with the battery voltage setting, if you are still getting the error message, please reply to this comment so that others can see it.
Excellent, thank you. I just did this on a UV-5G Plus. One thing different that I did is to make the change in Chirp to Voltage before I opened the Baofeng software, did the import, then went back to chirp and made the change back to LOGO. Same thing, just different order, worked great.
I tried to customize the start-up screen image but it initially said "Failure". I am on the right port as verified by my PC's Device Manager. The resolution was 160x128 pixels in Bitmap (BMP) File format and 60KB size. What I did was to reinsert the programming cable to the radio, make sure it fits, then change the USB port, and it worked! Thank you for this, Sir. 73!
same problem here. The radio lights up like it's trying to do something but I always get "failure". Correct image size, BMP, 60KB, correct port. I can read/write to the radio otherwise. Tried multiple images, multiple USB ports. If I slightly remove the cable from the radio it starts to go green like it wants to transfer but doesn't move.
Hi I have UV-5RM Plus and I want to connect to PMR Radio 462.713000 but is block you know how to unlock it :( i have try using the old style presing PTT + Monitor + VFO and Power but dont work :(
If you follow the steps in the video you should not have a problem. I own two 5RMs and have changed the images multiple times. Many off brand cords and fake Baofeng cords have been known to cause issues. Mabe that could be it.

Is there any way to customize the start up sound?
Not with the stock firmware. You can turn sound off though.
What resolutoon of final file?
Mine was 47kb. Max needs to be under 100kb

mine starts transferring on COM5 and then shows FAILURE... can you help me?
Are you trying to upload a bitmap file under 100 kb ?
@@CameraRay yes, 28 kb

Try inserting the plugs on radio a bit more. Or reinserting.
Anyone test the signal? Another channel said the 5rm has a very dirty signal?
I tested it when I first got it. Just slightly noisier than my Quansheng k6
How do I edit frequency, it doesn’t work on my part.
Switch to VFO mode and type in the desired GMRS frequency
Thanks bud... I love random details like this.
i tried this but it came out garbled i did everything you said to do?? im lost
You uploaded as a BMP file at 160x128?
I did that on the baofeng uv-21r and same thing happened to me even though I followed the video and imported a bmp file 160x128
You may need to change the image size to match your screen dimensions. I think the UV-21r may have a taller screen that their other color screens.
