I noticed another little quirk with the UV-5RM. If either the vfo or memory channel is set to an AM frequency and you switch to the weather scanning function, the weather channel is just static. Presumably because the radio is stuck in AM mode. You have to go back to the main screen and set the radio to an FM frequency. Then going back into the weather channel function allows the FM signal to be received
You weren't kidding! I just tried that and yup! Still could hear it, but very faint with a lot of static. Just really bad. Went back into FM mode and then back into weather and clear as a bell. Interesting for sure. Hopefully they'll come out with a new firmware update soon since it is a new radio release. Radio definitely has a few little glitches to get worked out...
Measuring harmonics: Once I take the initial harmonic measurement delta, I always add 10dB more attenuation and verify the delta dB hasn't changed. This is a quick way to make sure the spectrum analyzer is not creating the harmonics. If the delta dB doesn't change, then you know the delta dB from the initial reading is correct. If the delta dB changes after adding additional attenuation, then you were overloading the spectrum analyzer.
So what is really the problem with this radio? It costs $27 and has civilian air band RX. It easily transmits over 5W. So it looks like it’s perfect for hobby and for an emergency use. And it was approved by FCC. I’m just a regular user. Please elaborate on this radio more from this point of view. I appreciate it.
The FCC certification is for Part 15 which has to do with incidental RF radiation and things like not receiving cell phone signals. It is not "approved" for ham use. No radios are. A licensed ham has the responsibility to operate within the Part 97 rules. The radio I tested did not meet Part 97 emissions standards in the 2 meter band. For me, that was the issue. Cheers.
