    I LOVE seeing what you are growing and when. I'm stuck up here in the NW tassie and NO shops are open for yet another week. I'm so glad I purchased some gardening supplies before we got closed down. I pot planted some potatoes yesterday, and have been following your layering method to plant other veg. Im excited to transform my whole yard into an edible paradise. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Its gold for me that I've found a tassie, gardening mentor.

    We had some growing in an on open bag of soil for a while. Just cut the end off and stood it upright by the fence. At the time we didn't have a spud bed and didn't want the main bed to get taken over, but we had this one little purple potato plant appear from some relocated dirt. Since then we've used an few open bags to smother some really weedy ground and grown some pumpkin and zucchini.
    So if you can only afford a $3.50 bag of dirt and you are low on space, you can still grow something.

    Pillowcase will work (we use the bags that our 5kg oats come in) but the bottom will break down during the growing season, so you need to put it on a tray of sorts (or put it outside.) Single use only :) lovely video thanks!

    Love your channel!
    Here in austria we have a method called hay-potatoe, which I tried this year. I put the potatoes directly on the mowed lawn and then just covered them with about 30cm of hay. When the plant grows, i'll cover it again. Hope it will work :)

    Lovely video and great spirit :) If you have a chance could you give us an idea of your sowing times (either early and main crop) and varieties of potatoes you use for those periods? I always get confused by first early, second early and main crop , what that happens and which variety might be considered (we love those Dutch creams you're planting there). We're in Tassie too so it's good to know from you and your experience. Thank you!

    When you say ‘compost’, it looks like you are talking about the hay? (I think?) what type of dried grass/hay is this compost? I’m in Perth, WA - and I don’t have any hay, but I have loads of native tree leaves and sticks (eucalpyts, wattles, etc) that we’ve been mulching up - can we use this instead? Or else what do we look for?
    Ps. Thank you this is the BEST video on all these methods that I have seen and I’ve been searching for weeks!!!👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍

    • @GoodLifePermaculture

  • @steveriddell1937

    Okay looks good but what about the mound of used decomposed compost as it would probably have lot of grass runner around the side how could you control that to reuse the old compost?

  • @karenb221

    Have u tried growing spuds in grass clippings on a no dig base?

    • @GoodLifePermaculture
      @GoodLifePermaculture  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't. If using fresh clippings it might be too hot as it's such strong nitrogen. If using dry, brown clippings then sure thing. Add lots of water and some manure/compost/blood and bone :-)

      @@GoodLifePermaculture thanks, our current home we've lived in 10 years and I know it's gardening cycle enough to experiment with success away from the suppliers recommendations , however we are looking for a acreage somewhere and a lot of the places we look are new to us , so I was hoping there might have been a web site to make me aware of a more micro climate 😁 ahh well guess learning it all over again will be part of the thrill 😁thank you anyway

    I am in NSW, (1/09/2022) Mid North Coast and my local nursery sold me one kilo of potoatoes to plant. So early Spring, i noticed you mixed compost and garden veggies soil (I suppose) ! Does it work better with compost only in Pots? thanks for your reply....my first time this year!

  • @lydiah2577
    @lydiah2577 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How did all your spuds turn out? We have just made a vaguely ruth stout esc potato bed for the first time this year and already our nasty couch grass is dominating and bullying our poor potato plants! We might have better luck next year when I can try and thin out the grass more and more and add more deep mulch!

    • @GoodLifePermaculture

    You sat the potatoe up to get sun in the pot, but down low in the no dig garden so it didn't get sun. Can you explain that thanks. Bit confused 😜

    • @GoodLifePermaculture
      @GoodLifePermaculture  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm. Potatoes don't want any sun on them at all (otherwise they go green/poisonous). All three options have the potatoes 100% buried, so no sunshine on them at all. The garden/pot needs to be in full sun so the soil gets enough warmth for the plants to grow. That make sense?
