  • The Trawler 'Sharelga' sinks near the Kish Lighthouse when a submarine got caught in its nets.
The 70-foot trawler ’Sharelga was about 35 miles north east of the Kish Lighthouse when it was dragged by a submarine. The trawler owned by the McEvoy family from Clogherhead had its fishing nets out when fishermen on other vessels say,
It was suddenly dragged backwards at high speed. After being towed for about two miles, the boat overturned and sank.
Nobody was injured as the five crewmen were picked up by two other trawlers and taken to Clogherhead. The submarine has yet to be identified.
Ministry of Defence officials in Britain say it wasn’t one of theirs.
At Clogherhead Pat Connolly, skipper on the rescue trawler, the Supreme spoke to RTÉ News.
Sharelga crew members Mick Kelly and Noel Kirwin describe the incident but skipper Raymond McEvoy was too shocked to be interviewed.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 18 April 1982. The reporters are Kieron Wood and Brendan O’Brien.

It’s was the British submarine HMS Porpoise that sank the Irish fishing trawler. The British navy eventually claimed responsibility and paid the owners of the Sharelga an undisclosed sum.

In 1982, the crew of the Sharegla, a 100-tonne Irish vessel, escaped injury when the vessel capsized and sank after it was dragged backwards for about two miles by the Royal Navy diesel submarine, HMS Porpoise, after becoming entangled in its nets.

Yes, and they lied at first, claiming it wasn't them. It was an accident but they damn well knew and lied about it.
Keep that in mind next time you hear of our military claiming they're not responsible for an attack that killed dozens of civilians in some foreign country. Our "leaders" are far from the benevolent men and women most people assume they are. Lying is par for the course.

The very same Submarine, (HMS Porpoise) got tangled in the nets of a French Trawler in 1969.. HMS Porpoise also collided with an Aircraft Carrier in 1963 while leaving Portsmouth harbour.. Then this incident in 1982. All from the same Sub.. How many Subs have caused vessels to sink while at sea and it’s been kept secret?. Even with all today’s radar, sonar and GPS technology it still happens.. In 2019 a Royal Navy Sub narrowly missed a passenger ferry in the Irish Sea.. In 2020 a Royal Navy Sub narrowly missed a passenger ferry in the North Channel. And that’s just the ones I remember hearing about.. British, American and Russian Subs have been prowling our waters for decades playing their little “War Games”. There are numerous reports of incidents with Subs but when there are casualties then these “BIG POWERS” go to extraordinary lengths to cover it up… Look up the MS Estonia 1994.

There was always speculation that a similar incident with a submarine off the donegal coast was responsible for the total disappearance of the fishing trawler Carrickatine and its six crew in November 1995

@@michaeloconnor9809 As far as I can recall the weather conditions was pretty normal. As far as I know the only item the search parties found was a butane bottle that may or may not have being from the vessel. It’s wreak or wreckage was never discovered. It has always been a mystery in the same vein as maylasian airlines flight 370. It was a shocking and dreadful tragedy for the families and the victims of this

It was a British submarine HMS Porpoise. They fessed up eventually. It was during the Falklands war so that may have been a factor in the initial denial. Skipper had to go to court to get compensation which took a few years and wasn't very much apparently.
