Theoretically, yes, but the potential for damaging the speaker is much higher as the power rating could be accidentally switched. Using the 20W amp in question, we would still advise a 40W speaker.
I have a Blackstar ID260 2x12 Combo amp and was wanting to build myself another 2x12 speaker cabinet for the smaller space I live in. My home studio area is VERY small and a 4X12 cabinet is too large for my space since my amp actually sits in my closet. Its also about 4" too wide. Anyway I was wondering what are some good speakers to go along with it? I have not opened it up to see what speakers are inside it to void my warranty., but the amp on the outside says 300watts and its 4ohms. I seen your video on how to convert 2 8ohm speakers to 4 ohms. But what wattage would I select so the amp doesn't blow them or cause damage?
Does this apply for hi fi home speakers and amp as well or there is difference, because I know for profesionalni speakers (used in clubs, concerts, etc) it's totally opposite, for example if u have 350w speaker u need around 500 to 800w amp. Thanks

Got a 8412 Marshall cab. It has G12 40l speakers (I think) running a Katana head in it. Its way too shrill and mid rangey for me. Cant even eq it. Thinking about buying the Boss 212 cab. But also thinking about putting Electro Harmonix 12vr speakers in it. (75 watt speakers) any thoughts? Or just bite the bullet and do Celestion v30s or warehouse veteran 30s. 8 play metal almost exclusively. Greenbacks or Creambacks? Theese are some thoughts. 8f I do the 12vr speakers Im making a 300 watt cab for a 100 watt head. Would appreciate anybody's thoughts
The Jensen D series speakers have a flat EQ and are designed for modeling amps like the Katana. There is an affordable ceramic version: www.amplifiedparts.com/products/speaker-jensen-d-series-12-c12d-150w and a lightweight neodymium version: www.amplifiedparts.com/products/speaker-jensen-d-series-12-n12d-150w
Yes, absolutely. It is a general guideline to double the wattage of the amp, but nowhere near a hard set rule. There are lots of different situations, and different players have different needs, so if you want to use a 300W speaker with your 100W amp, we encourage you to give it a shot!
I heard one youtuber talk about efficiency ratings or DB. Guitar amps or speakers don't seem to have that information. Should I just forget about that?
Appreciate the talk but one major correction: you need 1.5 to 2 times more power in your amplifier than your speaker watt. So, for a speaker of 100 watts you should get an amp with 150 to 200 watts per channel out put. Not the other way round.
Quick question? I have a 20w bass amp and I really need to ugrade my speaker. So since you said you have to double your watt. So I guess I have to put atleast 40w speaker or is it? Am I right?
@@eveersdome712 If you want to use two speakers, there is no reason not to! If you plan to use two 20W speakers, you should have no issues with the amp being more powerful than the speakers can handle.
@@caljude pushing a guitar speaker with low frequencies can damage a guitar speaker, but playing bass at lower volumes through a guitar amp will not likely cause an issue.
Sometimes. It depends on the amp and the speaker you're looking to swap out. Speaker distortion is definitely a thing but typically most of the distortion in a tube amp is in the preamp and sometimes the power amp. The speaker has to be pushed into distortion which is usually at higher volumes. Old speakers can get warped or worn out in areas of the cone which can distort at lower volumes. If you have something like an 18W amp going into a single greenback which is 25W, there's a good chance that you can push that speaker into distortion. Upgrading to a 50W speaker like an alnico gold will likely improve that but be sure that you like the sound of that speaker at all volumes before making a decision. I don't think you can go wrong with an alnico gold though!
Hi Justin I have a simple question that might be easy for you to answering. I have 2 speakers 15 inches connected in parallel making both speakers work as 4 Ohms. They are 300RMS and I like to know how much power amplifier is suggested to get to make this 2 speakers perfectly loud, clear and without blowing either the speakers or the amp. I been watching your videos and seems to be that you are an expertise in the matter. Downside for me is that the speakers that I have they don’t have a label at all but I found out that they are 300watts in RMS mode. Hope you can help me here because I am so lost and I don’t want buy something that I might not need or something that might get wrong setting for the speakers and amp. Thanks in advance
Does anybody know can I upgrade Fender Champion 100 with Jensen C12k? And the most important thing you didn't mention, how do I know will the new speaker go in the same screw holes?
The Fender Champion 100 uses two 12" speakers and the amp itself is rated at 100W. The Jensen C12K has a 12" diameter and are rated at 100W each, so two of them would be a great option for that amp. Speaker mounting holes are standardized, so the mounting screws should line up with just about any 12" speaker on the market.
My question is I have a Marshall Super Lead 100w and am running it through an Orange 2x12. The Orange 2x12 is able to handle up to 120 watts. Would I harm my speakers if I were to max the the Marshall’s volume through them? I don’t intend on doing this too often, but I’d just like to know.

amplifiedparts i need help finding an amp for my 4 door speakers. they each need 175 watts rms at 4 ohms. i want a 4 channel amp ( one channel per speaker) and i want as close to 175 watts per speaker as possible. any suggestions?
The diameter of a speaker does not have bearing on the volume it is capable of producing. The "sensitivity level" of a speaker would indicate how "loud" it can get, so a 10" speaker with a high sensitivity could be equal in volume to a 12" with the same sensitivity level.
I have a 212 combo amp. Each speaker is 12" 50 watt 8 ohms. Can I put Celestion vintage 30 speakers that are 12" 60 watt 8 ohms in their place? The difference is the 60 watt vs. 50 watt that are already in it.
Hey Avner. There's no problem with increasing the wattage of your speakers. The new total speaker rating will be 120W as opposed to the 100W using the two 50W speakers. As long as you are matching impedance and your amp does not output more than 120W you'll be good to go!
There's a lot of personal preference involved but I'll try to make some suggestions. What amp are you using with the cabinet and what kind of tone are you aiming for?
say you have an old cab with no speaker, so you just know the size of the hole ( for this question, assume it needs a speaker that is a non-standard size, it is not a 10 or 12 inch speaker). How would you determine the speaker size just based on the hole size?
The size of the cutout is a bit smaller than the actual speaker size, as the frame add's about 1" to the circumference. If your cutout is 8" or so it's probably for a 10" driver.
Regarding the spreading of the wattage across multiple speakers, I have a question; I'm looking into getting new speakers for my old 4x10" combo, but I'm thinking of pairing two different speakers, so two of each, just to mix things up and possibly get some more character out of the amplifier. - Anyway; What would happen with the distribution if one of the two types was 30 Watts and the other say 60 Watts? Would the higher Wattage speaker be driven less and thus be quieter? Or would it somehow even out? (The amplifier is 100 Watts, by the way. Probably a real 100 Watts.) Of course there's also the efficiency, which in the case of these two speakers is a little different as well. What would happen with a few dBs of difference (which I know at that kind of loudness is a lot) in that? Would one just be underpowered or underutilized or anything like that? Thanks.
In terms of power going through each speaker, as long as the impedances are the same and the wiring configuration is series, parallel, or the standard series-parallel, the speakers will see the same signal. So if 100W is coming out of your amp each speaker will see 25W. Everything else about the speaker will be as it is spec'd. One type of speaker might just be louder than the other. A lot of times people will set them up in a crisscross pattern rather than side by side when using different speakers to balance out differences like that.
Can you answer my question. What is the difference between setting up a guitar amp and a music amp? I've seen videos telling the music amp should have higher watts than the speaker.

After a few " experts" were trying to fix my little tube amp , I've decided to do it myself, so the speaker in my ac4tv didn't sound right, the first expert changed the speaker, sounded ok for a while , then it didn't ( I've replaced the tubes ) . When i opened the amp, guess what ? I have an 16 ohm amp , and the expert mounted the 4 ohm speaker to it... Then the other expert told he this was incorrect , which it is , and mounted the old speaker back. I've tried the the amp again with the old speaker but i was outside with lots of cars coming through ,And near the children's park, so I couldn't hear well, came home , mounted the amp, and the first problem appeared again... This happens only after the amp is on for sometime , since it is a tube amp. Now I've only wanted to know since this is a 4 Watt amp, is the g10 30w ( 16ohms) good enough ... According to this video 4x2 is 16 so 30 would be enough i presume... I was worried because the original spekers was 50 watts, but according to this video i think it's ok. Funny thing with hi Fi sistem the amp needs to be 50% more powerful then the speaks .... I just hope I'm right because this g10 will set me back a 120 euros ... And the other guy has massured with his instruments that there are no signals distortions coming from the amp itself ... I have 3 guitars so the guitar isn't a problem ( same "bad" sounds are coming from all of them ) on the other amp that i have guitars and amp sounds as it should .... I'm just writing this is someone is having the same problems as me. Informative video this is and i thank you for it..
Question you said 100 watts amps , with 2x12 would distribute 50watts of power to each spekaer , and then you said you need to double it and have 200 watts speakers ? 50x2 would be 100 watts each ( combined 200 watts ) , So am I getting this right? If we use 4x12 speak cabinet on the 100 watts amp, than in the cabinet we would need to have 4x50 watts minum ? ( With the right impedance , and size )

Hey CJ. I'd check the speaker to make sure it isn't damaged since it's coming out of a broken amp but the stock speaker from a 65W amp should be fine with a 30W amp.
amplifiedparts Yea man, the Crate amp is in perfect condition, and I mean brand new basically! Except for the fuse housing, the previous owner ,or pawn shop tech tried to rig it with a smaller fuse back (screw-in connection)cylinder that holds a t2a fuse. The housing itself is larger, so needless to say, the actual fuse is too small to make contact on both ends. I replaced the entire fuse holder (and power switch) with the correct housing that fits the T2a fuse, still blows when turned on. I gave up, but it was only $18. Any ideas or suggestions how to fix? I'm definitely open for options as this has become an obsessive project at this point Lol
@@bones101proof If the Crate is a solid state amp and is blowing fuses my best guess would be the power supply or the power amp. It could be one, the other or both. It might be a good idea to isolate the power transformer and make sure it's working correctly too.
You forgot to mention that getting a higher wattage speaker than what your amp is putting out, can make your speaker sound like shit, sometimes, it can even sound as if your speaker is blown
question: my combo amp is 251 mm deep. its stock speaker is a celestion 7080 whose overall depth is 119 mm. what would be the max depth that could fit an amp that is 251 mm deep? for example, my amp is kind of a closed-back--it has a grille cover--and a celestion GB is 130 mm deep--would that fit OK?
Because the replacement speaker is roughly 10mm deeper than the original, it should still have sufficient space if the max is approximately 250mm. The only suggestion we can offer is to make sure there aren't any components such as tubes or transformers that are very close to the stock speaker that may present a problem with the larger option.

Theoretically, yes, but the potential for damaging the speaker is much higher as the power rating could be accidentally switched. Using the 20W amp in question, we would still advise a 40W speaker.
@@amplifiedparts thank you very much for your response!
Thanks
Most speakers will have a datasheet that shows a maximum power rating. You will not want to exceed that maximum rating.

Is it true that bigger is better?
So if my Amp puts out at 100watt I can use a 300 watt speaker? As long as the Ohms match?
You're the one who has it backwards. Do it your way and you're gonna have some smoke

That is correct!

Also one last question what if I put 2 speakers inside my am should I do (two) 20w speakers right? Or should I just put only one.
@@eveersdome712 If you want to use two speakers, there is no reason not to! If you plan to use two 20W speakers, you should have no issues with the amp being more powerful than the speakers can handle.
is the bass amp speakers is the same with the guitar amp speakers?
The concepts are the same but bass speakers can have other variables due to the number of speakers used in some cabinets.
@@amplifiedparts is it ok to used my guitar amp with my bass guitar for bedroom practice?
I'm not really sure it will damage my guitar amp speaker
@@caljude pushing a guitar speaker with low frequencies can damage a guitar speaker, but playing bass at lower volumes through a guitar amp will not likely cause an issue.
Will my amp distort latter if I put higher wattage speaker in there? For example If I go from Greenback to Alnico Gold?

Hi Justin
I have a simple question that might be easy for you to answering.

Full range or mid range
so the higher watts of your speaker than your amp output will make my speaker long lasting?
Pretty much. As long as you amp is not exceeding the total wattage of the speakers, the voice coil will not burn.

Hi, do you know if a 12x10 is a lot louder than a 2x12? Meaning one cab has a 12 inch and a 10 inch and the other has 2x12.
Is the 2x12 a lot louder?
The diameter of a speaker does not have bearing on the volume it is capable of producing. The "sensitivity level" of a speaker would indicate how "loud" it can get, so a 10" speaker with a high sensitivity could be equal in volume to a 12" with the same sensitivity level.

Hey Avner. There's no problem with increasing the wattage of your speakers. The new total speaker rating will be 120W as opposed to the 100W using the two 50W speakers. As long as you are matching impedance and your amp does not output more than 120W you'll be good to go!

I would go with some Jensen Alnico speakers for a cool vintage Fender like that. P12R or P12Q should sound great with it.
say you have an old cab with no speaker, so you just know the size of the hole ( for this question, assume it needs a speaker that is a non-standard size, it is not a 10 or 12 inch speaker).
Probably a real 100 Watts.)
Of course there's also the efficiency, which in the case of these two speakers is a little different as well.
Not once did you refer to the sensitivity or the efficiency of the speaker. This DB figure is important to know when selecting a new speaker.
Thanks for the input. We may be making future videos on the subject, and it is possible that will be addressed.

( With the right impedance , and size )

amplifiedparts Yea man, the Crate amp is in perfect condition, and I mean brand new basically! Any ideas or suggestions how to fix? question: my combo amp is 251 mm deep. its stock speaker is a celestion 7080 whose overall depth is 119 mm. what would be the max depth that could fit an amp that is 251 mm deep? for example, my amp is kind of a closed-back--it has a grille cover--and a celestion GB is 130 mm deep--would that fit OK?
Because the replacement speaker is roughly 10mm deeper than the original, it should still have sufficient space if the max is approximately 250mm. The only suggestion we can offer is to make sure there aren't any components such as tubes or transformers that are very close to the stock speaker that may present a problem with the larger option.
