  • Ohms explained! Wattage explained! In this beginner's guide, Sam explains how to match an extension speaker cabinet with your guitar or bass amp, to get maximum power and efficiency without damaging anything...
Check out our full range of guitar amps and cabs at PMT online: www.pmtonline.co.uk/products/...
So you want to add an extension speaker to your amp, but you're a little confused by impedances and wattage? Wonder what the Ohm Ω symbol means?
Don't worry, PMTVUK are here to help! In this video, we explain the differences between power output and maximum power handling, RMS and Watts, as well as explaining impedance and ohms, and the load that a speaker cabinet will put on an amp. So if you're confused, this guide will help you safely match speaker cabinets for your guitar or bass amplifier without causing any damage!
Sam also shows us how to run amps with mono settings and the differences between speaker cables and instrument cables - and why you should only use a speaker cable for extension cabinets!

    Excellent and informative video.
For years I've done the PA side of things and back line has always confused me.
With a PA you follow the same guidance for matching the ohms but you use an amplifier that's at least 25% bigger than the speaker cab and always turn the power amp to full. This allows the cab and amp to deal with peaks in signal without clipping. The complete opposite of guitar amps. I've recently found out that guitar amps are designed to be driven hard and the cones are constructed to take it. This video filled in the last gaps. I knew that guitar gear would blow in certain circumstances, now I know when. Thank you.

Is there a way to do this without giving up to much wattage? Again I want to keep both 4ohm speakers working and like to use a 12in or 10 in speaker as external. What is the best way to connect to those speakers inside to get sound out to external speaker

My Egnater 15w Tweaker head has 2 outputs - 1 labeled "main" and 1 labeled "extension". I'm connecting 2 cabinets, 16 ohms each. Should I a) connect the main output to 1 cab and the extension output to the 2nd cab?, or b) should I connect the main output to the 1st cabinet, and then daisy chain the 1st cabinet and connect it to the 2nd cabinet? Would both set-ups work, and in both scenarios would I set the head to 8 ohms? The manual is confusing - the written instructions imply option (a), but the diagram makes it look like (b) is correct. Any help would be great. Egnater is not responding to me. Thanks!

Plate impedances on a valve amplifier are high, so an output step down transformer is employed, and the transformer secondary is connected to the speakers. The secondary tap for whatever impedance should have a shorting tab to short the secondary when a load is not connected. If the secondary is left open, the amp may be harmed, so for a valve amp, the thought process is the opposite of a transistor amp with a low output impedance emitter-follower or source-follower output device. So to recap.. transistor amp (ohms too low NG) and valve (tube) amp (ohms too high NG).

I’ve heard your cab is rated to double that of your lowest watt rated speaker. So does that mean 50w is as big as a amp as I’d want to put through it or do the 2 greenbacks pair as 50w and therefore it can handle a 100w amp?
I know to not count it as 170w, but just not sure about the greenbacks and wanted to ask someone who knows more than I, thanks so much!

say if i had an AC15 Vox combo tube amp, would i be able to buy a cabinet and extend that amp through that cab’s speaker? i’m pretty sure that the speaker on the ac15 itself wouldn’t be active anymore as i use the cab but what’s important is that i’m able to retain the settings and use the actual amp of the combo to change my sound and stuff

My 8ohm mono input on my cabinet is broken. My cabinet has a 2x16ohm left and right input. My Marshall head has a 2x16 output on the amp, similar to the one shown in this video where it’s 2 single 8ohms with a 2x16 sticker below it. My question is, can I run my amp with both cables into the cabinet? Because obviously when I put it in left or right, I only get use of one speaker. Please let me know! I don’t want to hurt my amp.

    QUESTION.
    I have two PPC212OB 2x12 orange cabs.
And a orange crush pro 100
Can I run my amp through both those cabs?
If so do I use both plugs on the back on the amp or daisy chain them.

So if I were to put a 2x12 can rated at 16ohms vertically I wouldn't have to worry about the ohms dropping?

So my amp has a minimum impedance of 8 ohms and I want to plug it into a cabinet that is 4 ohms mono and 8 ohms stereo but my amp only has 1 8 Ohm output, the cabinet has a left and a right obviously the left side says “4 ohms mono (using this side only) and the right side just says 8 ohms, would it be safe to only plug into the right side of the cabinet or could I use a splitter and plug the splitter into the right and left sides of the cabinet and run the one cable into that?

some fender circuit can handle 4 ohm impedance when you plug and 8 ohm external speaker and the stock speaker is 8 ohm as well.... Example Blues deluxe reissue now on the market... and it's written on the manual.... but still all vintage fender amp can manage...for instance fender tweed deluxe 5e3

So a solid amp like the vox VM50 doesn't require a cabinet or does it need one? I understand a valve amp needs speaker because of the valves needing a load, but what about solid states?

    A question for you.
    I’ve got a JVM205H can it handle a stack 1960a and 1960b cabinets.
How would you go about it
