Navy Vet here. Did a tour in Iraq in 09. I can't watch this video. Listening is hard enough. Survivors guilt is what I deal with. Lost a guy I went to highschool/boot with. Cried like a baby when I first watched this video. Keep up the vids guys!

Tell my brother to keep fighting the good fight, keep his mind busy, press on through life the best he can and God bless!!

The official notification regs say a Chaplin and a medic. You could see the lapel pins when they were at the door. Part of his survivor's guilt was that he talked his friends into joining up with him and three of them died. The Army has a buddy program. You all have to choose the same MOS and then Army will guarantee that you go through training together and go on your first deployment together. After that the Army can send you where it needs you. Survivors who re-up usually do it for one of two reasons, they want to save others who are still in country, or they have a death wish. An old Nam vet here and even after all these years I still have bad days.

Just a small correction neither Ivan or any member of 5FDP served in the military. The band does however greatly support the US military and they do a lot of work with veterans organizations. This is why as a veteran I love this band. I don't much care if any members of any bands I like have served as long as they're honest in their support of my brothers and sisters and myself. As long as they'll put their money where their mouths are when it comes to supporting the organizations that support us.
Second, Dexter (who wrote the song) wrote and rewrote it at least twice for 2 separate reasons. The first time he wrote it in response to a shooting at a local ice cream shop. He later rewrote it to reflect his anger at the auto accident that took his girlfriends life. Just a couple corrections is all and in no way intended to take away from anyone's knowledge.
Still a great song. It's still a great meaning behind the song no matter which version you like more.

I'm married to a combat vet who suffers from severe PTSD. I watch him struggle every single day with anxiety, depression and multiple other issues related to his combat experiences. He suffers from horrible guilt about the deaths of others. It's heart breaking. All anyone can do is offer to listen. They will not ask for help. You often won't know how much pain they're in until it's too late.

That above anything else you can ever possibly do is what will mean the most to him in the long run. It's important not to push him to talk to you. Both my husband and I are Vets. We also have 2 sons who are enlisting. As proud as i am of them, i am scared sh^tless for them too. They made their decisions consciously. Oldest is 22 and youngest just turned 20. They are going Navy and airforce but i know this is no guarantee of safety. My husband was Navy and still was in combat. I was navy then army. We told our boys our stories hoping to lead them away from it cause we worry they may experience the things we have. We are physically broken and continually are emotionally and mentally healing. They dont know how worried we are as we only show support for their decisions and want them to know how proud we are of them but its hard. It makes it gard because i also get to hear other Vets stories everyday as a part of the work i do. I just hope and pray everyday that they will serve with less damage than my husband and I had to endure. Thank you both for your service and for being able to look in that camera and be authentic and real for everyone hear. You have no idea how.many of us need to see that and how many people you may help. With all my heart, thank and much love from here in Texas❤❤❤

My beautiful nephew did 2 tours of Afghanistan with the ADF. He has suffered such severe PTSD that he was suicidal, my sister had to go and take him for help and he was in the foetal position in the backseat sobbing. We were terrified, we had already lost one grandchild to suicide for a different reason, and the thought of losing him was unbearable. He has lost at least 4 mates since deployment to suicide. The ADF are shit, they do nothing. My nephew joined the Police and they are the ones who took care of him. He is better, about to become a father, but still has days when he rings my sister crying. He still cannot work. He has a wonderful partner who understands and is very calm, and she has helped him enormously. They are getting married in Greece next year and we’re all going from Australia. To see him married and happier is such a blessing to us! Love you so much David ❤️

Thank you for your comment Karen. reading your story brought tears to my eyes because I know what your nephew (my brother) is going threw. It is very unpredictable when you wake up the next day as to how you are gonna feel. PTSD doesn't care about your schedule or what you have planed the day. If you will give his this message from me. Brother! keep fighting the good fight and know your are never alone in the fight, I have your back along with your loved ones if you need me and I'm sure I speak for most other veterans out there. Together there is nothing we cant overcome! There was a long time I suffered alone because I thought I was superman and could do it on my own. Then I came to the realization that asking for help doesn't make you weak, it only proves you are strong, because it take a man of immense courage to ask for help! There is no shame in it! You keep telling yourself " I made it threw hell over there and although I came home with scares physical or mental, I will not let it defeat me...Because I am a veteran. And I will continue To be there for my loved ones just as I did for my country! God bless you brother, I love you! and keep your mind busy with hobbies if you can, it helped me. try to never have an idle mind. A huge SALUTE!!! to you and your loved ones!!! Thank you again Karen for the comment!

@@daolman8226 thank you so much for your comments. Our David has suffered terribly, but no worse than so many thousands of others around the world. U til it occurs in your family, or within your orbit of friends, you have no idea of the torment that they and you go through. I certainly didn’t. My biggest fear when he went was that he would be killed. Yet our aunt knew as soon as he was deployed that he would suffer terrible mental anguish as she is a nurse and has seen it herself. He immersed himself in computer war games and self medicated when he was deployed home. All very unhealthy choices which just made everything even worse for him. He joined the police here and was only on patrol for a short time after graduating, again really not a good choice for someone with PTSD. But the Police have been remarkable and have taken much better care of his mental health than the ADF even though his PTSD was not caused by serving the Police. They have been fantastic! I appreciate your kind words very much, and send my love to you, for some peace in your mind, your heart and your soul. With best wishes for your healing from Australia.

This one hit too hard. I left Ramadi after a 12 month tour in 2006. Our Brigade lost 85 men, and over 400 seriously wounded. 5 of them were my friends. I was almost killed TWICE within the first 9 hours on the ground by rocket & mortar attacks while just on base. We operated as armored cav scouts and engaged the enemy on an almost daily basis. I probabaly almost died 2 dozen times but was extremely lucky. Rest in Power my brothers, see you at Fiddlers Green when my tour is over in this realm. We will laugh again like we always did. I wear them on my wrist now along with a cousin who was killed in Afghanistan 5 years later. @Da Ol' Man: First, I want to thank you both for your service. I myself am a Navy vet, and I have both a younger brother and an uncle, both Marines. When my brother came home, he struggled with survivor's guilt, and for whatever reason, I was able to help him through that. A Battle Buddy of his took a bullet from a Dragunov rifle overseas, that was meant for my brother. The man died in my brother's arms.
Second, I have another song from a symphonic metal band called Ravenia. They released a song called "We All Died For Honor," and it, too, is about survivor's guilt. And all I can really say is, survivor's guilt, like war itself, knows no nation. At this point in time, it's why my heart goes out to the men fighting in eastern Ukraine, because I'm sure some of them also have to deal with survivor's guilt as well.
Thanks so much for your heartfelt reaction, gents. Here's to hoping we #EndThe22 and #EndThe5000 one day.

I only discovered ffdp a few months ago. I listened to the offspring's version of this song almost daily back in the 90s but never realised ffdp had covered it. Love this version. Also the 1st video I have seen from you guys so I'll be watching some more. I am civilian but have huge respect for those who serve in our defence forces. My grand father served in the Australian light horse during ww2, his brother toured Borneo at the same time, My father and uncle both served in Vietnam so while I am a civilian, I am well aware of the scars our defence personnel wear for the rest of their lives after returning. The worst part is the scars that can't be seen with the eye are usually the scariest.

Can I make a couple of suggestions from an Aussie perspective? This is almost an anthem here. It doesn't get a lot of play any more because it's an old song and a lot of people find it hard to listen to.

I'm a rap music fan. A couple of years ago an Aussie rap group came out with this as part of triple j's like a version. Basically, the radio station invites their most popular artists to cover well known songs and play them live. This is what the the herd came up with. I love how it's much more modern but also doesn't dilute the message of the original song.

I am not a vet. I want to join but I have cerebral palsy and a paralyzed stomach. Even before my stomach started even with a mild case of cp I am a part time wheelchair user and I was told I would put others at risk. My brother, cousin, and grand parents (many) served. My brother and cousin are currently enlisted. I have the highest respect for those who serve. I have ptsd from bad childhood and medical. It’s hard. But I will say, the effects of war, I can never understand but I will always support the veterans that struggle with it. Even if it’s just listening or a small smile in passing. Respect to you for reviewing this video. Its a great track and I like F.F.D.P, but I cannot watch the video without tears. 😥
Im a 12 year British Army veteran who lost both my legs and left arm in Iraq.
Hit an I.E.D. in a Wolf WMIK, blew the front off the vehicle killing the driver and taking my legs and arm with it.
According to E.O.D. it turned out to be six soviet legacy mortars all strapped together.
Still have P.T.S.D. to this day but alot better with time and heap loads of counselling.
    Stay strong brothers!! 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

Unfortunately I was born with a eye disability tht can't be corrected . Lot of friends from my highschool went straight to the service. My buddy deals with survivor guilt bad I tellem I'm here to listen and that's what I do just listen. He's been blown up 3 times shot twice and stabbed. He tells me all the time he doesn't understand why them and not me. The only thing I can tell him is that the big guy has bigger things for you. I lost so many friends to the war. It's truly hard to see your friend or family come home with a flag draped over them. I miss everysingle one of them. Thank you all again for everything y'all sacrifice.

most people are fortunate to never experience losing someone like this video portrays but it does an amazing job at showing the stages. the survivors guilt, the anger, the depression. I served alongside him for years and suddenly I'm having to carry on knowing he isn't with me. unfortunately for me I didn't learn quick enough, spent too much time overseas and away from my daughter that I ultimately lost her, I lost my best friend on my second deployment and I deployed three more times afterwards and frankly my ex wife was right to leave because hindsight I was doing it for myself because it felt right to keep doing what my friend couldn't. not to turn it political but that's why I have such a displeasure for politics is because now I lost my brother, my oldest daughter & my first marriage for nothing... everything I gave means nothing. 5 combat deployments and nothing to show for it.

I was stationed at Ft Hood in 3/67 Armor when 9/11 took place. We watched it in the day room as it aired. Once the coverage kind of slowed down we all got to the motor pool and got our tanks ready. We were all like, let's do this thing, we won't take this shit from anyone! I've lost to many brothers and sisters in combat (I have 23 of those bands) but sadly enough, lost more by their own hands because we are so discarded once we are done serving.
