  • Jim plays the new SYOS Chad LB signature mouthpiece. This mouthpiece is incredibly free blowing, with a velvety undertone, but when pushed it immediately rips and becomes a powerhouse. The tone is clearly bright (as you’d expect from its geometry) when taken to its loudest point, while the basic integrity and core remains present throughout.

      @@johnbanjo5772 hey there! An 8 opening (tip opening) is the measurement of the distance between the reed and the tip of the mouthpiece. In SYOS terms an 8 is .110 inches or 2.79mm.

    I really like this mouthpiece, so much that I have two. But with different tip openings. My first was a Chad 8* and this mpc's played so nicely that I couldn't resist ordering a second one, a Chad 9*. The bigger opening gives a bigger and cleaner sound which is easier for me to articulate (coming from a -77 Otto Link STM 9*)

    I tried a custom SYOS mouthpiece for my alto earlier this year. At the time I had 3 mouthpieces, a Selmer S80 C***, Vandoren Optimum AL5 and a JodyJazz HR** 5M. I liked how freeblowing the JodyJazz was but I preferred the sound I got on the Selmer S80 but the beak angle wasn't as comfortable for me to play on. I thought maybe they could make me a custom one to my specifications as I had heard from people who have tried a SYOS that they were very free blowing and I liked the idea of having a colour other than black or grey on a mouthpiece.
    After giving them my specifications of a centred sound that was dark and a bit free blowing, I mentioned that I tend to get the better sound on mouthpieces that have a slightly thicker tip as I get a smooth sound I am after on those as thin tips usually are too buzzy for me at any reed strength I can play on and I don't want a buzz in my sound. I got the mouthpiece and was initially disappointed as it had thin side rails, thin tip (not the thicker tip like the S80 has that I asked for) and medium round chamber. The design seemed to look like the design of the JodyJazz HR*.
    After playing on it, my initial reaction was that it was very comfortable to play on and I didn't feel the vibrations like I do with other mouthpieces. I also found it to be easy to keep in tune. However, It still seemed brighter than my S80 though and I preferred a darker sound. I found the sound lacked some complexity and a was a bit straight and a bit buzzy, probably due to the thin tip. I also noticed a kind of fizz (or fuzz however you describe it) in the sound which I read was due to the mouthpiece table not being smooth but if the table was smoothed out, that would go away. Overall the mouthpiece wasn't for me, too much like my JodyJazz HR* but not the sound it has which I prefer.
    I have seen the comments of people not liking these and have not even tried one but you have to try it first to see whether or not it is for you and I found it just didn't work for me but they are very good mouthpieces and I have heard artists like Chad LB, Scott Paddock and Dan Forshaw etc... sound very good on their SYOS mouthpieces.

      I remember you being able to send the mouthpiece back and getting them to try to fix it. Maybe should try again instead of giving up a little early to get your money's worth.

    I got one on a great offer from SYOS. Wanted to try it on my low Bb Buescher Aristocrat bari. Unfortunately it is too large for the cork. When I eventually get the horn serviced I will renew the cork and try it. Have used it on my low A baris (MkVI, Yanag B901) but it is definitely as reserve mpc and not one I would play on a gig.

    Chad is a great saxophone player. No wonder we wants to use his position commercially. But what is the basic concept about his products? What does he know that Otto Link, Selmer, Vandoren, Jody or numerous others don’t know? The fact that they are printed is no issue, as we are looking for the sound, not the way they are made. Is this just another mouthpiece?

    • @eonblue46
      @eonblue46 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My perspective is that Chad just asked for certain characteristics and SYOS produced a mpc with those sounds. It isn’t really his product but a SYOS product that is Chad’s “signature” mpc

      Just tried these mouthpiece- not very accurate finish, sounds ok, but not great at all, I still prefer my Vandoren V16 T8- twice cheaper than SYOS. Its just commercial IMO

    • @derhorst2177
      @derhorst2177 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SaxInstructor For me, it is the opposite. I played Vandoren V16 T7 for quite some time, but had some difficulties with it, mainly not being able to play loud enough in a big band setting, and some problems in the middle range (G/ Ab). Switched to a used Zinner metal one, that was louder but had a certain dirty sound quality I didn't really liked. Then I invested into the Chad LB Syos in 7* - and for me it is 50% better than every other mouthpiece I played up to now. Velvety subtone, gets loud when I want it to, even all over the range... a dream. Yeah, I have to admit, it looks and feels like cheap plastic.

    • @SaxInstructor

    • @lukeserrano62
      @lukeserrano62 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me the dynamic profile of this piece seems very even, actually too even. I don’t hear a sense of depth in the sound. While the basic tone is very pleasant, imho it doesn’t really go anywhere else. It’s just a bit boring really; the saxophone can do so much more, even working within straight ahead bebop. I’d love to hear Chad play on a piece that has more scope for bright AND dark tonal variation, especially with regards to accented articulations.

      Know what you mean ,even a fine player like chad it often gives off the Ramada Inn kind of sound vibe as opposed to say Sonny rollins at the village vanguard kinda sound vibe.. 😂 being a little sarcastic but there's some real truth there also
