    Great video Scott! Your sound is amazing. The Barkley Brazil was definitely the best one in my opinion. The Syos was close to the Barkley Brazil. I’m still curious to see you playing a metal mouthpiece like a Guardala. With such huge sound, this experiment would be very interesting.

    I know you dig that blue piece, and it's your go-to- but boy, do you sound so much better on the meyer.

      I played that Meyer for a very long time and never thought I would switch. For jazz and ballads, it definitely has a great sound. For what I play most of the time these days - the Barkley is the best fit. Some people change their gear depending on the style of music they are playing, I like to keep it simple and play the same thing all the time. The only exception would be for classical music.

    I have the same Barkley Kustome Pop in Red. Love it too. Scott do have a great sound to be fair. Top man Scott. The Reed I found works best on my mp is a Fibracell 3

      I tried Fribracell and liked the way they played a lot but they completely died on me after a week. I went all the way up to a 4.5 and they still kept dying on me. Glad to hear that they are working well for you!

    I have a Martin mouthpiece like yours and mine is a #3 which is probably for a beginning student with small lungs. I made a baffle for mine but really didn't do much.

    Love your tone, Scott. You still sound like yourself no matter what mouthpiece you use. However, I have noticed that there is a ring or edge (I don't know how to describe it) to your sound, even on the C*. Does it sound naturally like that or you did some EQ to it?

    Martin mouthpiece, ha ha, think that must be my trouble! Never realised mouthpiece made so much difference always thought it was the Reed grade...there you go, profound moment for a beginner. I only just realised you recently through the caravan colab you done with Jamie...outstanding stuff.

      I only paid for the Meyer and that was about 20 years ago. It was $175 then. The rest were either given to me free or I acquired them along the way. I think the Barkleys, the C* & the Syos are all around $200 new now.

    I find the Meyer sounds the best though it's a little too silent. I selv play a Meyer NY 7 and has a marvelous sound and it's loud.

    Along with another commenter, I would have liked you to adjust the reed strength to match the mouthpiece openings so that we could hear you apply your air flow and control more fully on the different mouthpieces. I, too, played a Selmer C* in college, then switched to a Selmer S-80 C** shortly after the S-80 came out(that shows my age!). I played jazz and classical on it until I ventured further to get a LeBayle for Jazz just to get a bigger air flow and sound.

    Fun video Scott. I hung with Richie Cole about 30 years ago and one night at a jam he handed me his horn to finish a song. I could barely get a sound out of the Lakey 4*4 and soft reed he was playing at the time. I couldn’t believe he got his big sound out of that mouthpiece.

      Hey Dan! Same thing happened to me with one of my sax teachers - Ron Diehl. He let me play his mp, and I could barely get a sound on it. That's when I realized that playing someone else's gear won't give you their sound.

    Important lesson: Match the reed strength to the mouthpiece. Keeping the same reed strength only works if all the tip openings remain similar. That's a big reason you got nothing out of the Martin. Here's a tip about tip openings: Stiffer reeds for smaller tip openings and softer reeds for larger tip opening.

    Hi Scott, excellent! I ask you, do you know why some saxophones warble when low notes are played? for example D, C#, C, B and low Bb? I will appreciate your answer if you have it. It strikes me that by putting something similar to a wine bottle stopper, this effect disappears. From Argentina...Silverio

      Hey Sil, that usually means that your saxophone has some leaks. Those low notes get all kinds of gargles in the sound when you need to take your horn to the repair shop

    What’s the recipe for that bzz (rocker) sound, especially on tenor? I don't mean growling. I use your syos mouthpiece on the tenor and it sounds great and is very responsive, but I would like to have a scooped mid sound with bzz like you have on the tenor (as well as the alto). Thanks.

      FAST AIR! Center your air in the dead center of your mouthpiece and get it going really fast. The more your reed vibrates the fatter your sound will be.

    My thoughts:
    Meyer- Same core tone as BB Kustom, but less power. More subtleties and personality, IMO.
    SYOS - Big sound, similar core sound and power. Very bright. sorta buzzy?
    The Martin- Huge tone! Sounds like you, but you with no lower lip. :)
    BB Vintage 5- very prone to overblow like you said, which can be fun, but pinched sound. Overtones sounded great, to me.
    Selmer C* - smooth sound, very low power, but classy. Funny how Altissimo evaded you, seeing as you just kill in Altissimo range.
    Thanks for the fun! You are a gifted teacher and player, and I value your skills and technique, which has definitely helped me in my saxophone playing. I've learned (read: made sense of) more from you in the past few months than I have in my last 40 years of sax playing. I tip my hat to you!
    BTW: Have you ever tried any mouthpiece(s) from Phil-Tone? If not, please do so!

    This is a great indication of how a MP can change your sound. Scott has a very unique sound anyway. Is that the reed or the material the horn is made from that gives that unique sound? I am 5 weeks in to my sax journey so any info would be amazing. Thanks

      5 weeks in, you just need solid gear to get a good sound. Until you really dial in the way the air is going into the saxophone upgrading your gear won't make much of a difference. Once you've got your embouchure and airflow locked in, a good reed is where it all starts (but you need that from the very beginning), followed by a mouthpiece which will have a significant change in your sound, then finally the sax which will have some effect on your sound. Hope that helps.

    Like you I'm using high baffle mouthpieces and I like the bright and loud side of them. I'm using also yours Syos on tenor. I did noticed that if I'm playing loud and with lot of air, my sound and intonation is good and I'f I play it softer it's become weak and unstabile. How to owercome that?

    Hi Scott hope you're fine well it seems barkley brazil best sound and fits on your ambochour. In my opinion everybody have different sound and different mouth piece fits his ambochour for me the yamaha 5 fits for me till while I bought the v16 vendoren and it didn't sounds good for me i don't know what do with it 🤦‍♂️

    I play a meyer 6 and am interested in The Barkley (or similar type). Can I ask you from a meyer 6 (.076) to a Barkley 7 (.087) that's a pretty huge difference in size. But how different does the blowing strength actually FEEL like? Thanks for a great video

    The Martin mouthpiece probably has a ridiculously closed tip opening, much like many mouthpiece of its time. The air you put through it isn’t vibrating the reed at all, it’s just closing it off lol

    1. Do you think that your Barkley Brazil, Custom Pop 7 Blue will work well for developing a circular breathing technique?
    2. I checked the Barkley website, while the Barkley Brazil Custom Pop 7 Blue, has a high step baffle, a #7 tip size, and a large chamber. Do you feel that you have to put a lot of air into it? (I play a Meyer New York, #6 with a high roll-over baffle for a versatile bright sound.)

      Hey, once you learn how to circular breath you should be able to do it on any mp you play.
      I have very fast moving focused air, but I still get a great sound on my Barkely Brazil even when I'm trying to play softer and fuzzy. However, be warned this is a VERY VERY bright modern sounding mp.

    I think if you had some harder reeds for the lower tip openings, you would sound similar across all off them. I find if I play a mouthpiece for a little while, I adjust my embouchure and move towards a similar sound, and will pick reeds that get me closer.
    Mouthpiece makes a difference but it's maybe 10%. Since you're a pro that 10% - the right amount edge, buzz, brightness - is really important.
    But the most important takeaway is that you can get a GOOD sound out of every mouthpiece but the Martin, and I'd love to see you try that one with the right reed so it doesn't shut off on you because I'm sure you'd be able to sound great on that too!

      I feel like if I would have adjusted the volume in post production for each mp I would have sounded very similar on a lot of them. The BB is sooooo much louder and that is what my recording gear is set at.

      I don't comment on this very often, because I don't want anyone to follow my example... but I prefer a loose-ish fitting neck. When the neck has a tight fit, I literally can't get the air through it. My repair guy tightened it one time without talking to me in advance, and it was a disaster. He loosened it back up while I waited and he couldn't believe the huge difference it made in my sound. It doesn't really make any sense, but it works for me. A sax that I played on for several years had a naturally loose fitting neck that I never had fixed, so I think I just adjusted to playing like that. I think David Sanborn has his set up the same way. So yeah, I barely tighten my neck - just enough so it doesn't fall off or swing around when I move the sax. I don't suggest anyone else use this type of neck setup.

    White Barkley is much easier to listen to-needs a harder reed. The sound of all these would be appropriate in settings with LOTS of volume from amplified instruments. I wish I could a hear a more acoustic approach. The Legere sounds thin and bright, although it might sound better in person with natural acoustics. Or when competing with electric guitars and synths.

    I'm surprised anyone can make a legere 2.25 sound this good. I have a 2.5 classic and it's not hard to overblow and doesn't have a very focused sound on any of my mouthpieces. I only use it for practice but my cane reeds all sound worlds better to me.
    Anyways I agree you sound best and most comfortable on the Barkley.

      Hey Russell, the American Cut & Signature play and feel way different than the Classic. When I use to use to cane I played a 3 soft. A lot of it has to do with what other gear you're using. On tenor I use a 3.25 Signature on tenor.

      @@ScottPaddock the American Cut is great, but does not last as long a the Signature. I’m think it’s tapered a little more at the tip, so it breaks more easily. I really like the sound and have gone up a strength from the Signature on both alto and tenor.

      @@Osnosis They last about the same for me, but the Signature starts to get a whiney sound for me when it is dying. The American Cut hangs on pretty strong. I usually get about a month or so out of a reed. I should be better about switching between a few reeds instead of playing one into the ground 😁

    Hey, Scott! Love the video. I prefer your sound on the Barkley Brazil Vintage because I prefer a more warm, round and mellow sound to a sharp, bright one. This mouthpiece has "tamed" your usual "aggressive" sound (which suits me fine).
    Compared to your preferred mouthpiece, does the vintage have a lower baffle? I tend to get the sound I prefer from a low baffle, medium strength reed and 5-7 tip opening.

      Hey Alex, yeah, that one is pretty far from my regular sound and it definitely reels in my aggressive side. I was surprised how much I liked it when I heard myself on the recordings. Definitely a mellow sound. I'd like to try it with a stiffer reed and see what happens. It doesn't have much of a baffle, but it has a horseshoe chamber which definitely effects the airstream.

    your original Meyer

    The difference between any two bright-ish pro level mouthpieces is never going to be super drastic, but the difference between the stock pos that everyone has lying around and any of these will be huge. You can’t sound like yourself on those. Upgrade.

    The Meyer has the best tone by far, its sweeter and has a beautiful Jazz sound, Syos belongs in a crackerjack box,
    Brazil is way in your face, goid for funk not Jazz

      Agreed on the SYOS. They were a fad. I don't know anyone who plays one without getting paid to do it (or at least gets free ones).

It's only natural they get their mouthpiece for free since it's the product of a partnership. They wouldn't play Syos if it sucked, it would take away from the quality of their performance and end up damaging their own brand. As far as being a fad goes, we'll keep pushing the envelope as long as we're around :)

      He's earned it. He's a great player and has reached a level of success that only comes from years of hard work. But if you think he would have bought four Mark VI or SBA or whatever instead of taking four free P.Muriats, you're just being silly. It works. Several of my students have bought Legere, Theo Wayne, and Syos because of people like Scott, Leo P., Moon Hooch, Lucky Chops, Derek Brown, and on and on. Kids think they can buy good sound because of sponsorships like these. That is literally what you're hoping. You're not giving him free stuff and a % of certain sales because you're just so nice and generous. 😆 So I take their horn and sterilize the MPC and play it for them. And they're shocked at how much better it plays when I do it. Then we go back into discussing breath support, embourchure, etc. I tell them they already have a decent mouthpiece and reed setup for horn and they need to work hard to sound good, not spend money. I'm not against buying good gear, believe me. But I am against the perception you cultivate that your product is a shortcut to something that is only earn with work.

      Scott, no disrespect. You have made it clear you endorse these but first one needs to work on breath and embourchure etc. It's SYOS that I disagree with and their inability to let it lie when someone is critical of their products or business model. This is not the first time they have made a transparent defense of themselves when I have expressed my opinion about them online. It's toxic. But that's not on you. You're doing you thing.       @@MattCouzensMusic while I TOTALLY agree with your summation on getting/having a good sign, the professional is looking for a mpc that is the easiest to achieve that sound. I love my SYOS, but do play a Lamberson or Francois Louis in a big band setting (for better blending). That’s on tenor. Alto is a Berg Larsen, and soprano is Selmer D Scroll (metal). YMMV.

    Not sure why you're wasting time on the Martin and your old Meyer. Folk are looking to play the latest quality pieces like the Jody Jazz / Better Sax Burnin', Windy City Woodwind / Theo Wanne '56, and the latest SYOS Originals. Purely MHO but this vid is not up to your usual tight, well researched standard, man.

      Hey, I think you might have missed the point of my video. It wasn't to introduce mouthpieces that people might want to buy, it was to show how much different mouthpieces affected the way I sound. Here's the video description "In this video, I demonstrate just how much my mouthpiece affects my sound by playing 5 different mouthpieces along with my normal setup. Can you hear a difference in my sound?"
