I really like the background you used while playing the mouthpieces lol. Smoky has to be my favorite I’m a sucker for darker sounds in jazz lol. Would be hard to cut it as a lead alto with that though.
The coolest part about this review to me is how strikingly you sound like yourself on any setup. You’ve really found a voice of your own and your sound barely changes regardless of mouthpiece! I so admire that and I’ve been working to get closer to that point in my own tonal identity (and my ability to put healthy air behind the horn 😂). Great video as always Nathan ❤️
Aw thanks man. I still don’t understand what my voice is lol, but I don’t really want to either! Boundaries scare me! Also you’re too nice because you are a BEAST on every horn you play
You should try out E. Rousseau mouthpieces! Specifically their classical mouthpieces, they seem to work very well with me, specifically on the Alto Sax!
I second this, but include their jazz pieces. I have a Rousseau studio jazz that is gorgeously dark. Great for when I need to play with only piano in an environment where my regular jazz setup sounds too bright
I would agree that the Smoky one sounds the best. I also liked the Spark too. The thing with alto is its naturally a bright instrument, so having a higher baffled piece can be harder to control and too "in your face". The smoky model seems perfect for pretty much any situation except classical.
I didn't even knew that was a flavor that existed. I GOTTA TRY IT!!!! Also, sorry about my other comment I made. I thought you we're asking me about SYOS mouthpeices.....
3:28 It looks like that for aerodynamics. It naturally filters all the air to a fine point to make a lot more sound. I use this for my jazz crystal bass clarinet mouthpiece. It really makes a difference
@@Saxologic I love it! I got a 7 cut just to try something new and it plays smoother than any of my other mouthpieces! I only have three others though because I have only been playing for about six years. I love it so far
I could imagine pulling up to a recital in that bright blue plastic saxophone off amazon. Cherry flavored reed, and a bright orange mouthpiece to match.
You gotta love mouthpieces that are so durable they can just toss them loose in a bag together for shipping… Its definitely one of their big selling points in addition to their light weight, consistency, awesome playability, and great customer service.
I’m an advanced beginner and I love the smoky syos. I’ve tried a few and couldn’t get any proper sound out of other MPs. But with the syos…it just jelled. I ordered the smoky 5 in turquoise with an orange lig. I ❤️ color too. ☺️
I suggest that you try Theo Wanne mouthpieces. Some Theo Wanne mouthpieces can be pretty expensive but they are my go to mouthpieces for pretty much everything. I would love to see you play one!
Definitely preferred the meyer in the comparison, but that may be because you know exactly how to make your main mouthpiece sound great. You should do a follow up after playing with the SYOSs for a few days each to compare their peak sound
Bird played a white plastic Runyon model 22 given to him from Santy Runyon, and also a white plastic Brilhart streamlined Tonalin. So to me I liked your Meyer best, with a centered phat lead Alto Phil woods vibe, then the white sysyos was almost like a Paul Desmond kind of vibe, like a West coast Art Pepper kind of sound
I have a smokey and I do want to say one thing about it. It is much better in a combo setting than a lead alto setting in a big band because of its darker and quieter tone. I couldn't really get it to "pop" enough in the lead alto setting and had to use my Meyer to cut
So I play a syos spark on tenor and the mouth price is great I feel like there is a tiny bit more resistant low end then another pro mouthpiece but the leaks in my horn doesn’t help either but I feel like the ligature that came with it was not doing it justice i would play for 40 mins and then the reed wouldn’t make a good seal with the mouthpiece anymore and I would hate the mouthpiece so I would suggest a vandoren optimum ligature which made it so much better and I feel like a bit of a harder reed makes it better because of the step baffle there not that “resistant” I like out of a mouthpiece and cause of that when I try to push the sound it sounds tinny and sooo out of tune.
although i mainly play tenor i also own a Yamaha yas 23 with a Runyon mouthpiece and get one heck of a great lead alto sound using Fiber Cell # 2 REEDS . THAT SAID You are one terrific ALTO Sax player and in my humble opinion believe that the first , yes your black original mouthpiece plays absolutely fine . On my Selmer 6 tenor i use a metal Dukoff that does what i want it to do .. again i certainly admire your personal playing technique .. Bobby G.....
Meyer is predictable. SYOS maybe you can get to more possibilities. I had the problem with the high notes not having resistance enough. i tried them on tenor and bought a 6 Smokey and that is better than the 8 that I first tried. SYOS is a really good group of people to work with.
Great video. Thx. Can you tell me what tip opening was used on the smoky dark blue alto Mouthpiece? While you at it. Also on the white Mouthpiece?? Thx
these mouthpieces are sick. you should look into checking out the Nuvo jSax! its like 100$ and its like a mini saxaphone! it looks like a toy but it plays surprisingly well. check it out!
Hey there, Mr. Ologic. I was watching your "Practice for 12 hours" video and I was wondering if you could make a video about things to practice. I haven't picked up my sax in a couple months because I don't have anything to play and don't know what to practice. Any suggestions or recommendations of products or tachniques would be helpful...please.
Hey man, can you please advise? Need to use my Plasticover reeds on alto because of my doubling "issue" on gigs. But I need a MP that darkens those bright overtones, while still enabling some easy altissimo. Currently using a Syos that's really big with big interiors too, nice and dark sounding but very limited altissimo. Maybe this new Smoky model would be my ticket? Or ? thanks!
I've been looking, but can't find a tenor video you mentioned potentially making! Did you make one/is the "Smoky"/Blue still the go to on Tenor as well?
Actually no, I’m finding it hard to stick to the Mark VI 😂 I love the sound out of it, but the high notes are so frail on it. I am thinking whoever overhauled it may have adjusted some measurements on it too far? Idk. I am looking for a new neck, hoping it will open things up a bit. I definitely wanna stick with it!
Really like ur videos man! Can u please do a review of the better sax alto sax and compare it to jean paul AS400?! Im really looking forward to this one!! Thanks!
if you could, can you make the tenor version of the transcription of Sam Greenfield's instagram post? i play tenor saxophone and i LOVE the way you play it!
Still looking for something that would give me the punch and altissimo ease like my Guardala old studio model mpcs. do on both my tenor ( main horn) and my alto. Only difference I use a Vandoren V16 3 and a half on my tenor and alto I use a 3 or sometimes and 2 and a half reed. I love the evenness of my old Guardala's they are both late 80's studio models in silver with Selmer metal ligatures and been using since 1989. So I am like why switch now? I am just afraid of how much more time do they have?
Heya, I’m a tenor sax player currently in wind ensemble for my school. The band here never really taught us music theory besides knowing both bass and treble cleft, I was wondering if you had any recommendations in learning musical theory? Or where to begin?
The blue one is my preference, it's warm, but seems to lack some of tonal complexity of your Meyer. I play a TT Mouthpiece from Roberto's Woodwinds in NYC. It's a hand finished 3D printed model that is easily one of the best I've ever played, warmer, fatter sounding than my reissue NY Meyer and Ted Klum London model.
I see the great despair I have caused from ending the knife scenes. Never again will I fail you all. The knife scenes shall make a striking comeback.
im comforted already
Not seeing you choking on a knife is very discomforting
Don't get why the self harm jokes should be funny
@@FabiansHideout its ok not everyone understands jazz
LETS GOOOO
I know almost nothing about saxophones, but the more I watch your videos, the more I want to try this instrument
Try it ( ͡o ͜ʖ ͡o)
Same! My dad plays Sax, and I was thinking about getting into it this year. Learn a new instrument.
I really like the background you used while playing the mouthpieces lol. Smoky has to be my favorite I’m a sucker for darker sounds in jazz lol. Would be hard to cut it as a lead alto with that though.

What openings were these SYOS@@Saxologic

Rousseau makes Wonderful classical mouthpieces , I have both the 4 R and 5 R models.
I would agree that the Smoky one sounds the best. I also liked the Spark too. The thing with alto is its naturally a bright instrument, so having a higher baffled piece can be harder to control and too "in your face". The smoky model seems perfect for pretty much any situation except classical.
Good choice on the neck strap. I have several of those Jazzlab sax holders. They are all I use and have really saved my neck through the years.
Always nice to listen to your amazing playing Saxologic!
I'm lovin' the videos you post Saxologic! You've inspired me to pratice really hard on both Classical and Jazz Tenor Sax! Keep up the great work!
Thank you Flavored Ramen. Have you tried Blueberry flavored Ramen? It smacks.
I didn't even knew that was a flavor that existed. I GOTTA TRY IT!!!! Also, sorry about my other comment I made. I thought you we're asking me about SYOS mouthpeices.....
It's funny, I loved the sound of the orange. Almost sound like a metal without the projection.
NO, NOT THE KNIFE PART!! I LOVE THAT PART!!
:0 Ok I will revive it!
Can you do a video just showing off each mouthpiece you've collected and what each ones like special characteristic is?
That’d be a lot!
Have a good day to you to sir!
You have a better day.
If you haven't tried Westcoast Sax mouthpieces you're missing out! Absolutely love my MOAM .086 on Alto and MoFo1 .110 on tenor!
Yooo thanks for that shoutout - glad you dig the shirt!! #wrongnotesonly
3:28 It looks like that for aerodynamics. It naturally filters all the air to a fine point to make a lot more sound. I use this for my jazz crystal bass clarinet mouthpiece. It really makes a difference
😂I literally just got the smoky tenor in the mail today. What a coincidence
Yes sir! How is it on tenor?
@@Saxologic I love it! I got a 7 cut just to try something new and it plays smoother than any of my other mouthpieces! I only have three others though because I have only been playing for about six years. I love it so far

I was spooked when I saw they pouched them. 😐
DUDE I’m getting my stops mouthpiece today and I see this… making me excited
Woot woot woot woot
Youre tone is exceptional. It really sets you apart.
Personally like you on the Smokey. I play on a Jody Jazz Jett super 8 for my alto, but you make the dark tone sound so good
Jody Jazz review soon 😈
AH YES, SOON
Man you'd sound good on a piece of PVC! This was an awesome comparison vid!
You’re a kind man! You’d sound good on a piece of air!
I’m an advanced beginner and I love the smoky syos. I’ve tried a few and couldn’t get any proper sound out of other MPs. But with the syos…it just jelled. I ordered the smoky 5 in turquoise with an orange lig. I ❤️ color too. ☺️
Great video! Super informative and fun too watch. Your playing is absolutely amazing! The spark was my favorite out of all the mouthpieces you played.
Yeah that Smokey sounds great! 🎷
They sound great! might cop some of your tasty licks
Thanks man! You are the true equipment God
I suggest that you try Theo Wanne mouthpieces. Some Theo Wanne mouthpieces can be pretty expensive but they are my go to mouthpieces for pretty much everything. I would love to see you play one!
I’ve tried them! I had to take the video down for reasons, but here it is if you wanna see it: th-cam.com/video/JrQvDFtrlTc/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! Very nice to see you try them!
The sound he gets on that Meyer is just too good.
Pls don't get rid of the knife vidssss😭😭 They made my day
Definitely preferred the meyer in the comparison, but that may be because you know exactly how to make your main mouthpiece sound great. You should do a follow up after playing with the SYOSs for a few days each to compare their peak sound
that orange one sounded like vintage recordings the way you played it 🤣
The knife possession gets me every time 🤣
Just bought the Smokey in white......smooth.
I love u man, thank god u are not that 2017 fake saxologic who claims that he can play a chromatic scale, u are real, u gud, u nice
Sweet sounds..... I like the smoky as well. Great video, always teaching... thanks!

Ah yes, another addition of me watching sax gear videos even if I don't play.
Welcome!
You and me both
But I play!

Love the videos your a huge inspiration to me to be a better sax player

Yeah for sure, I am not a huge fan of the SYOS ligatures. I love how it looks but I pair the BSS ligature with it and it’s 😮💨
The blue one just great
We'll miss you, knife scene 😭
Let’s go he made a video
the white one me likey
the tone is really nice on it
man you are a beast on that saxophone

edit: 7:25 he hit us with "in a dispassionate mood"
Good ear!
Why does your video always make me want to learn sax? Lmao, can't even play guitar that good HAHA! Love your videos man.
yes sir I really prefer saxoligic SYOS mouth piece
Smoky is my winner :)
The SYOS Smoky, has numbers 5-6-7-8 which one are you using in the video? 😅
7!
Colored mouthpieces: 🌝
Colored reeds: 🌚
Great video. Thx. Can you tell me what tip opening was used on the smoky dark blue alto Mouthpiece? While you at it. Also on the white Mouthpiece?? Thx
Do you know what tip opening the smoky mouthpiece was?
these mouthpieces are sick. you should look into checking out the Nuvo jSax! its like 100$ and its like a mini saxaphone! it looks like a toy but it plays surprisingly well. check it out!
hmmm, the 'spark' sounds like my berg larsen alto mp.
Perhaps I should get this one for my tenor.
Wonderful video, as always. Was it an 8 tip opening?
Syos SPARK, WOW
dude I wish I had these
Nice vids
great. thanks
I like the meyer.

Me gusto el sonido del Smoky
No mouthpiece caps? 😔😔
Tenor gang
I would be curious to know why you’re not using your signature model anymore. Would you mind giving your thoughts on it?
and when was the syos tenor vid comming i have been waiting since january hahaha
You shhould review the new Dickerson Resonator ligature for Tenor sax on Reverb & ebay - it's awesome
What reeds you using these days? I have one of the saxologic 7 mouthpieces i think and im wondering which reeds to use for jazz

mr saxologic pls bring back the transcription series
And, the winner is….🤔🎵🎶🎵🎷
if you could, can you make the tenor version of the transcription of Sam Greenfield's instagram post? i play tenor saxophone and i LOVE the way you play it!
REAL
Could you use the smoky for classical and what tip opening was it
I played the saxophone to but I have a long way to go to play music!!!

WHAT WAS THAT FIRST SOLO YOU PLAYED ITS ON THE TIP OF MY TOUNGE BUT I CANT REMEMBER IT AHHHHHH!!!
Okay nevermind it was baptiste herbin I remembered now lol💀💀
What wa the solo at the end in all three saxologic?
@saxologic what microphone do you use?
7:34 me too
;)
Heya, I’m a tenor sax player currently in wind ensemble for my school. The band here never really taught us music theory besides knowing both bass and treble cleft, I was wondering if you had any recommendations in learning musical theory? Or where to begin?
Is the ligature valid? I'm thinking on buying my own Syos mouthpiece. If not, which ligature would you recommend for under 75$ or so?
Funny I bought a random mix of these mouth pieces and one has saxologic engraved . The odds lol
Do you use any effects on your mic?
Not on this video - completely dry mic
Adoro esse cara

Bro sounding like Albert Ayler at 7:33
What size reeds do you play on?
one question. does the ligature come with the mouth piece or is that seperate?
