Bro this is me with my acoustic guitar. Threw my portable speaker to my bed. I was so tired from recording that day that I forgot the guit was sitting right there in the dark. Tore right through the whole side. She’s my baby. My life was shattered. Still is, still haven’t told anyone else. I feel your pain, and I’m sorry for your loss.

Those professionally made visuals of you at Josh’s house really helps paint the picture of what happened, without those I would’ve only cried for 5 minutes instead of 10.
A friend of mine did this exact same thing to his trumpet, but it was in a VERY dark location. Same thing, though, a friend came up to say good night, drive carefully, and as my friend backed up, he heard it and KNEW what he had done. And it was his horn that he had saved up and sacrificed for while in high school, about 45 years before. He LOVED that horn. And drove over it lengthwise. He ended up sending it back to the factory, who pounded it out, but had to replace the bell, it was too far gone. Cost him far more than the horn originally did. But he was back to playing it the last time I gigged with him. It's amazing what you can fix. Or should I say, you can pay very skilled people a lot of money to do amazing things and fix the messes you make. And thank whoever for that.

I know Ken Beason, he was our NTSU sax repair guy ,back in 1982. He could take any horn and hot rod it! Metal tone boosters, Bare Brass, key swedging, tone hole leveling, you name it, he is the master!!
Regret is an inevitable consequence of life. If the metal is still there, the horn can be fixed. I picked up my case, was talking while packing up and didn’t fasten the latches. Rolled my Mk VI tenor out of the case onto the floor. I couldn’t eat for 3 days until I got it to Paul Maslin’s shop in Evanston. Paul repaired it, been playing it for 25 years without thinking of the incident.
This has happened to me. I felt completely hopeless. What was encouraging is that after my tech managed to fix the banana body and everything ....my Alto became better than ever. It just speaks even better.... I hope you get it back really really soon!!!
One time I left my sax on the bus on the way to university. I realized that as soon as I got on the skytrain and then got off at the next stop (where the bus is supposed to stop as well) while on the phone with the transit company. Luckily they told me which bus it was on so I found it. Terrifying 30 minutes though.
Several years ago , I purchased an heirloom Conn Conquerer 30 M Tenor saxophone from an older gentleman who had it for decades. It was mint. These were very special horns with every bell ,whistle and adjusting screw you can imagine. The engraving was spectacular. The sound was enormous. I started using it instead of my King Super 20. . I had changed vehicles and my loading procedure was different. I backed up and was horrified to feel the bump and worse, the crunching sound. I cried like a baby as I took the ruins into the house. I had run over , not the bell, but the body. I took it to Jim Coleman our local tech master. Over the course of several months, he slowly massaged the metal a tiny bit at a time to restore the horn. He didn't detach any posts until the very end. It played very well, but never quite as well as when I got it. Somehow the metal was stressed from the indignity. That is my fanciful interpretation. Now, I always double check. Cheers.
Ken Beason is AMAZING, I was lucky enough to meet him 30 years ago in Texas and he still remembered me! I just got back my YAS-855 from him and it plays sublime!!!

It’s pretty fun seeing your professor mentioned in a TH-cam video with a bit of admiration. Rick Keller teaches at my school and I really wish I wasn’t in such a deep playing rut when I studied with him because man he is such an incredible teacher, his teaching is as great as his playing if you could believe that and he’s such a humble guy. Funny how small the saxophone world really is!
Ken Beason is a bad ass. Used to live nearby and my teacher got all his horns done by him. He told me one local marching band had a horn they gave the bassoon players just to hold to look nice because it was unplayable -- had fallen through the bleachers onto concrete. Turns out it was a selmer mark 6. My teacher said he bought it from the band and had Ken fix it up -- the story goes that Ken had to get more metal to put on the horn or something but I guess he did the metallurgy himself?? Unreal. Anyway, the horn he showed me played fantastically. Idk how much of the story is true though
Yep! I did that years ago in the winter. I was enjoying the sound of breaking ice puddles under my rear tire when I realized it was my Muramatsu flute. I feel your pain.
Damn!! I had slightly hurt my saxophone before and it really felt bad. Cant imagine what THIS is like.. but thank godness you have a legend to bring reginald back to life!!
Also....I had a Selmer SA80 Series II Alto back in college....it was after Wind Ensemble I was principal Alto. I had a Protec gig case and for got to zip it. Flung it around my shoulder to head off.....and it flew out spinning to the ground on the tenon....the top twisted like a coke can. Palm key tone holes looked like footballs. My first Sax was $600 new in 2010 (the cheapest new you could get in NZ at the time) and I learnt on it, performed on it and earnt money in shows and busking with it, it payed for itself many times over. I was a bass clarinet player back in high school and on my way back from a competition my precious Apollo fell out from under the bus in the middle of an intersection and got plastered by a mini van. Some kids from another school actually got it and brought it to me the next day. It was horrible. It was in bits of metal and wood. Very sad day. The lead art teacher at the school got it and made a modern art piece out of it that now sits above the director's piano in his office.
This reminded me of the the time when my tenor sax plastic case gig bag opened up in a hotel revolving door, and the USAF Selmer Mark 6 hit the ground!!! Right before our jazz band concert, I had to play the concert on a borrowed sax.
