Unboxing + Reacting to SYOS Mouthpieces!

  • In this video, I try out 2 alto saxophone mouthpieces - the SYOS Steve Kortyka model and the SYOS Godwin Louis model, and I compare them to my 2 rubber mouthpieces, the John Thomas Custom and the Meyer 7M NY. What makes these SYOS models unique is that they are 3D printed, so the measurements are able to be very precise and consistent. They allow you to customize mouthpieces on their website to any degree of specifics you want - it's incredible! Usually, I've been wanting to try one of these for several months now. Finally got my hands on them! My favorite part about them is that they are colorful. Usually, when someone walks into a room with any colorful gear on their saxophone setup, you immediately associate them as noobs. But these mouthpieces are the real deal - professionals are using these everyday! Has anyone even read this far in the description? If so, you are incredible, and a true master of reading. I just finished reading an entire book not too long ago and man, it's been a while since I've done that. Never, ever again. lol jk. Okay I hope you enjoy this video!

      Chris Higgins Honestly the Steve one felt really good. It also plays subtone incredibly easily, which I had some difficulty doing with the Godwin model. But, I only tried 2 different reeds on them so far, so there is a lot more to discover!

      Saxologic I feel like the Steve one had a nice balance between bright & dark. Obviously got to spend some time with the mouthpiece to get to know it. I bought the Tivon Pennicott tenor mouthpiece from SYOS and it’s great. I went back to my Otto Link though because I don’t play tenor very much.

      I thought the Meyer won pretty decisively. Great projection, nice full well rounded tone. The SYOS pieces have this subtle but still significant lack of depth somehow. Feels like the SYOS pieces kind of.. suck the resonance out of your tone. Only slightly, but still

    • @aeabottss22
      @aeabottss22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn’t say terrible, but not great either, especially for the prices they are charging. Not sure why they didn’t just use SLA and get higher resolution, then sand where the reed sits. Cool idea, but it feels like the guys that design these aren’t fully educated on 3D printing.

      @Niko L, my 2 cents is whatever get's the job done however maybe reflowing the parts by cooking them encapsulated by salt or sand would take away all the lines. Or just use a high ress printer. But speaking from experience I have dropped my horn and mouth piece before so I would be reluctant tot have a SLA printed mouth piece, it would just shatter.

    Hey man, I've always digged your sound so you definitely sound good on all those pieces! But my own personal experience with SYOS is that while they're cool little mouthpieces they lack some depth in the sound department. It seems like they take away some of you and imprint this "fake" sound if that makes any sense. But you still sound killer on all of those pieces! (The Meyers my favorite but I'm biased because I played on one for a while) if you ever get the chance try out the 10mfan mouthpieces, those mouthpieces are solid! 🔥🔥

      I feel I should chime in here and say I totally agree. There’s a lot of hype around the SYOS pieces because well.. there’s a lot of hypable stuff about them; wacky colors, 3D printing, super customizable, etc. but the sound just doesn’t cut it.. like Diego says, it always feels like there’s something missing. A sort of unshakeable fake or cheap sound, that you notice more and more the more you play it. SYOS pieces are a cool novelty in the short term, but I’d be surprised if professional musicians chose to play these over any other mouthpiece, if they weren’t being paid to use and advertise it. They need to make some upgrades to be taken seriously as a contender for other $200 pieces

    What reeds did you play on the mouthpieces? Which mouthpieces offers less resistance? Which mouthpiece can subtone easier with?

    Definitely a cool idea. I'm curious how durable/cleanable it ends up being - judging by the layer lines it looks like they are just printing it using a pretty basic 3D printer. Given IMO their real value is the custom models they generate it would be cool if they could partner with a contract manufacturer to offer different printing processes with better surface finishes and different materials (including metal!).

    You should do a video on discussion mouthpiece specs and giving recommendations on which ones people should try. I’m going to music school in the fall and currently play on a metal Belmonte with a 7 tip opening, small chamber, medium baffle. I only play it because there’s so many options out there that I don’t really know what to pick and there aren’t any good music stores within driving p distance that have a good selection of mouthpieces to try. Closest one is 3 hours away driving. Idk I think talking about mouthpieces in a video would be great and helpful to a lot of people! Thanks! Love the channel!

    Dude, I have a question. How much does a mouthpiece matter when playing? Will upgrading mouthpiece significantly affect tone/sound/ease of playing? Been playing tenor for a few years at this point and deciding whether upgrading from my Yamaha 4C will be worth the investment... Thanks man!

    • @thefunwashere6221
      @thefunwashere6221 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey I’m not Saxlogic but a mouthpiece can make a world of a difference, your could have a cheap 250 dollar horn but if you have a good mouthpiece you could make it sound like a Selmer or Yamaha
