NYAD Movie Review | Annette Bening | Jodie Foster | Diana Nyad

- Annette Bening IS Diana Nyad in "NYAD," starring as the legendary long-distance swimmer who made the treacherous journey from Cuba to Key West at age 64. Bening brings plenty of swagger and bravado to this larger-than-life figure, and she has a lively chemistry with Jodie Foster as Diana's best friend and coach, Bonnie. But Oscar-winning documentarians Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi ("Free Solo"), making their first narrative feature, opted for a story of athletic uplift, when there's a thornier, more interesting tale to tell here. Co-starring Rhys Ifans. In theaters now, streaming on Netflix Nov. 3.

Bening and Foster certainly make the movie worth watching. Really liked Rhys Ifans as their ace navigator, John Bartlett who looks like washed out seaweed, and we later learn a reason for this. Yes, Christy's correct that movie misses on the controversy of Nyad's claims. The postscript dedication to Bartlett is touching. The archival footage lends a bit of crediblity to other aspects of the story. Interweaving flashbacks illustrate the demons consuming Nyad that drive her. Neither will win the Oscar but there's worthiness in their nominations.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Marty!
Jodie foster needs to make an oscar comeback with this performance, seeing an open supporting actress category and gr8 reviews for her work (as always) I hope she gets that fifth nomination (her first in 29yrs)
"Push through the sharks" -- Christy Lemire. Inspirational words to live by.
And they're not even metaphorical sharks! These are actual sharks 😄
I have a huge love of Jodie Foster, and she looks so fantastic here. The chemistry between her and Ms Benning is obvious, even just watching the trailer! Not my usual cuppa tea, but I'll definitely see this one.
Great Larry, let us know!
Sometimes you guys review stuff I haven’t heard of and that’s why I love this channel!! But now I feel out of the loop and need to watch this immediately lol
Thanks, Courtney! That's a huge reason we do what we do, so we're glad it's helpful.
the movie comes out Nov 3 on Netflix!
Thank you for your thoughtful review. I'm a "mature" marathoner, so naturally I found this movie totally inspirational. Having said that, I agree that it could have been so much more than your typical never-give-up sports flick. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it. Whether or not it is Oscar material is debatable, but I gotta admire the commitment and effort Bening put into the role. And FYI, I also have an internal playlist when the going gets tough 😄
I'll definatly watch it when it drops on Netflix.
I loved Nyad. I'd give it a 9/10.
Saw a screening the other night in SF. I had some structural issues with it (maybe the 'first narrative' explains it) but I agree about the missed opportunity observation. I've seen a doc on Diana already but maybe that's why they went narrative. Did you get 'award season' vibes from it? I didn't, not enough so, though I liked the performances and especially the chemistry. I wish they'd held the actual footage of Diana until the end since it took me longer to get Annette as her into my head.
That's a good point, the back-and-forth with the footage is a little jarring,
I think Annette might get the nomination but she's not gonna win 🥲
Saw this last night. It doesn't exactly transcend sports movie cliches or TV movie tropes, and the lack of certain documented since-debunked Nyad self-hype aspects was eyebrow raising, but, oh my goodness, is it absorbing and watchable, and Ms. Bening and Ms. Foster have perhaps the most convincing female chemistry of friendship since Ms. Davis and Ms. Sarandon in "Thelma and Louise" -- effortless, gripping, and wholly committed. Oscar noms seem inevitable and entirely deserved. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso.
They are great together, it's true. Thanks friend!
I do not understand this Nyad is unlikable stuff. She seemed perfectly likable and even funny at times.
She's kind of an obnoxious and demanding narcissist a lot of the time though, no? But she can be funny for sure.
@@BreakfastAllDayI don't see that either, maybe demanding. To each their own I guess.
I watched this review while fending off a jellyfish . . . well, actually multiple jellyfish . . . and a shark.
Great job!
Oh no! Watch out, there's another one behind you.

Aww thanks Steve!

@@BreakfastAllDayI just read the Patreon post. (My bad. I filtered it out.) Good luck with this new venture!
@@TroyTheObtuse Thank you!
I think 6.8 is a fair rating for this movie. 7.8 might be a little bit too generous.
I enjoyed the beginning of the movie, but halfway through the flashbacks got a bit too repetitive and turned me off. The ending though is great so overall it's still a good movie. Not fantastic, but still entertaining to watch.
I just watched this last night. Man, I can't believe how great both Annette and Jodie are in this!!!!!! And Rhys Ifans!! My god, everyone was so execllent! For me, Jodie wins the prize though. So much subtlety and complex emotions and motivations at play, all written across her face. She choked me up a few times here! Very unexpected from a goof like me! lol
Jodie Foster is SO good in this. What did you think of the movie as a whole?
@@BreakfastAllDay I enjoyed it. I think that the director team's previous experience with extreme sports made it a little different. The unbelievable wear and tear on the body and mind in order to do such a thing was not something I'd ever even heard of before. Out and out hallucinating? Crazy!! Nyad's accomplishments were not on my radar, so anything I know, I learned in this movie. The fact that they left some controversial stuff out makes sense, but bothers me a little. You're right, that would have made it more interesting. But all I had to see was a shot of the two lead actors, arm in arm with the two real people in the end credits. They must have made this with Diana Nyad's cooperation, so she probably wouldn't let that negative stuff in. Too bad.
Going on about extreme sporting, have you saw The Novice with Isabella Fuhrman.
Yes! We reviewed it and loved it: th-cam.com/video/DNmA14LIJPI/w-d-xo.html
I think Bening is brilliant in this movie. I didn't like Foster as much but when you see the real life Bonnie you realise Foster got her character to a tee. But I think Bening carried the movie. Very interesting story. It's a bit cliched in parts. No mention of the controversy that followed. And no real insight into what drove Nyad to such extremes. But enjoyable.
Thanks for your thoughts, Anne!
I don’t really know anything about Diana Nyad. I like Annette Bening. Plus I think Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi are amazing filmmakers. Based on a lot of what Christy brings up, I’ll probably skip it. Thank you Christy & Alonso!
How did the LA Marathon go?
So great! Doing it again next year.
