Considering that Annette Bening is portraying a real-life person, maybe this could win her the Oscar. If theres one thing the Academy is well known for, its awarding an Oscar to an actor/actress who plays a real person.

Just finished watching the Blanchett vs. Portman Oscar race video and Brian mentioned this point. I wonder what other performances are gonna be contenders for awards season

I think that Annette Benning is going to get nominated for best actress and Jodie Foster is also going to get nominated for best supporting actress. I hope that Nyad get good reviews.

I’m so excited for this too! I love free solo so much, it’s a documentary that I revisit a lot, and it has such a narrative quality that I can imagine these filmmakers did a fantastic job bringing another inspirational story to life. I know that if you’re someone who has taken big risks to pursue a dream (which I know you have just done with this channel) stories like this can really unlock a lot of emotions, and that’s great! I can’t wait to see it, and I’m expecting to feel similarly!

Again another great review! I was at the same showing at Telluride. I also found the film to be very moving. I liked the real footage being interspersed throughout the film. It was done very well. It was cool to meet the real Bonnie at the Q and A. Jodie nailed her!

On February 10 I will be 80 years of age. And I have many of the physical problems of women that age. But here's the thing.- I "identify" as age 60. Sometimes even 45. I came to this realization on August 8 of this year and ever since then I've been acting and feeling confidence that wasn't mine, even at a biologically younger age.
In fact, I just got a job writing freelance news -I've been a community news reporter all my work in life but haven't done anything since I retired been retired since 2006.
This is just to say that there are many Diane Nyads out here. And by the way, I love your videos.

Thanks for your review, Brian. Even from the trailer alone, I can already tell that Bening & Foster are going to give powerhouse performances. I'm actually surprised the film is already at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that it's more than just a performance driven film. If Annette Bening can work her way to a Julianne Moore Still Alice sized sweep, that Oscar can finally be hers too. Definitely excited to see this on Netflix next month.

It’s so TRUE what you say Brian… me too at approaching 60 I suddenly realised its now or never for running a marathon (not swimming from Cuba to Florida I know but big for me) The first day of lockdown I barely managed to run 1km!! Now 3 years later at 60 I’ve not only run 4 marathons but also 2 ultras AND this summer I ran the entire length of the Burgundy Canal , 287km!! And I’m sure it’s just the beginning !! Whatever your dream, JUST BEGIN!!! And then don’t stop!!!😊

Let’s give Annette Benning her overdue Oscar win. This is her Still Alice.
Jodie Foster her first nomination in 29 years.
& I’d love to see Rhys Ifans get his first nomination. Underrated actor!

I’m honestly glad I subscribed. I actually trust your tastes and you’ve convinced me to watch films I was “Meh!” about all year (“Barbie” being one of them.). Much continued success and I look forward to seeing this.

Oh, Brian, you've got me excited about this true story. Hopefully, Anette will be nominated a 5th time and perhaps even win the Oscar for Best Actress this time. Of course, Jodie has won twice before years ago. A supporting actress nomination for Jodie would be great as well. Thanks so much for another excellent review!

Omg, thank you for this review, it was so insightful and tearjerking. Having seen the trailer of this movie, I must say as a die hard Bening fan this was like when I was waiting to see Being Julia. I really hope she will get another Oscar nomination and even win it for this movie. Her dedication and preparation for this role is impressive, and what a dream casting of Foster as the second lead. I can’t wait to see it, and I am sure I will be moved to tears....even your review made me cry.

For me, this was actually the most inspirational movie since Rocky! One of my favorite scenes is when a lady asked Diana's coach how much longer she'd be swimming! She replied 8 hours and 31 minutes! ❤

and Bryan, you changed your mind about Nyad faster than many politicians do and you said that Annette Benning snubbed Margot Robbie after Oscar nominations announced. Honestly, you need to stop making videos for gen zers.

OMG! You totally get this movie! I'm a marathon runner in my 60's and I gave up on my time goal, because I felt I was "too old". This flick has inspired me to reach for it again. It's imperfect - yes - but I absolutely love the message and the two leading ladies ❤❤ Glad they earned Oscar noms (and you nailed it with your prediction).

Out of the 13 movies you saw at Telluride, how many of them will you be reviewing for your TH-cam channel?

Outside the year of 1980, it seems every bio-pic struggles to please everyone and falls short of perfection. Either the exposition is too much (leaving the feel of a TV movie), or there's none at all (the recent slice-of-time trend like "My Week with Marilyn", "The Iron Lady", and "Judy"). I mention 1980 because both lead Oscars went to arguably the 2 finest bio-pics ever made, "Raging Bull" and "Coal Miner's Daughter". "Raging Bull" is more arthouse while "Coal Miner's Daughter" is straightforward rags-to-riches yet still told cinematically without TV movie trappings. I know there are good ones here and there ("Me and My Shadows" with Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard), but they are greatly outnumbered by the many ordinary ones which you can instead gather from TH-cam videos. So I'm not surprised "Nyad" struggles a little, because the filmmakers cannot help but try to please everyone, they'd have to instead adopt the "Coal Miner's Daughter" approach and somehow hold fast to avoiding that.

Does it show much about her early attempts. I am old enough to remember them and believe it or not a lot of people cheered for her failure to do it. It was all about her being a woman and got really nasty, I'm sorry to say. Unfortunately, female athletes were not appreciated at the time.
Maybe she will finally get her elusive Oscar, I think she is loved by the Academy. You must be a good luck charm to these actress as you do a video on them and then in a year or two, they win.

    How freand support anthor freand.
So it is not tragedy film...
To feel it is strong story.
I think all peaple watche it will love..for one time.
as i love the story you tell us in review..
But the film will be not the masterbease...and not the will astonshing film.
Audunce will enjoy it...and they will feel it is (light drama).
But critics and voters...maybe think it is film of hope.
Give auduance family leeson...as they in the shool.
I dont think after you tell us story of film..any wrong in it.
It is perfect film...but in geniral not the strooong to win oscar surly in race of oscar.
I feel if i watch it i like it as you tell story..becase they make the original story in right way...
And suite for diana nyed life.
    Not more and not less.
But her life and her swimming not the story all peaple care about.
I meen it is not biobic...i think it is story of her advanture and journy in sucssus swinning axperiance.
in the oscar we cant expect how will get nommination and how will win..academy snube peaple and let some peaple win by wrong choice.
Thank you to clear the film not one line...
