  • The Brioche Stitch is a combination of stitches that makes a nice, thick, double-sided fabric. In this video we cover both the simple Brioche Stitch, and the two-color Brioche Stitch. Written instructions for this stitch are available for free on my website here:
    verypink.com/2011/08/31/brioch...
    This video demonstrates how to work the stitch combination. If you need a clear explanation of any of the individual stitches used in Brioche stitch, you'll find my videos on these stitches here:

    I KNEW VeryPink Knits would show how to do this stitch with the hand, yarn and speech being in unison. There are SO many tutorials on this stitch where the instructions and what we are being shown are nothing much like each other. I'm really grateful to you. God Bless You.

    I have had “Learn Brioche” on my list of what to do for the year for a few years now! I was just under the impression that it was too hard...Thank you so much for all of your tutorial videos! They are my go to for things I forget and for new stuff I’m trying to master! Thank you, thank you thank you! ❤️😍😘

    With the brioche stitch, you can really only string a "proactive" lifeline, not a "reactive" one. That means the only way you can really string a successful lifeline is when you string it through the stitches that are on the needle. Many people string lifelines every couple of inches or so, just to be safe.

    I have found your instructions, for two colour brioche stitch, to be the most clear that I have seen so far. Just the simpe step of not turning for the foundation row was enough to not get into a mess. I am successful at last. Many thanks.

    Thank you, I had thought that brioche stitch was going to be super complicated, but you've made it look accessible. So far I've watched the video and now I am itching to try it. I guess that will be the proof of the pudding, backed up by your written instructions, also. Thank you again.

    Thank you, Staci. I was mainly interested in learning the Brioche stitch so that I could make a lofty, warm winter scarf. The one-color Brioche stitch instructions will be fine for that purpose, and I will use a variegated yarn for extra interest as you suggested. Your PDF instruction page loaded straight into my Adobe Reader with one click. So I'm all set.

    @11Wizardry9911 I don't remember the brand of yarn that I used in this demonstration, but it is 100% wool, worsted weight. You can use any yarn you like for this stitch. All of the details in how to work it are available in the free pattern. Just follow the link I provided below the video, in the video description.

    This video is meant to demonstrate a combination of stitches - and not the stitches themselves. If you need help with a slow demonstration of any of the stitches used in Brioche stitch, I have clear, slow videos for the knit stitch, purl stitch, k2tog, p2tog, etc. I also offer a free downloadable pattern to accompany this video (link is in the video description field), that should help both newer and experienced knitters with this technique.

    Firstly, thank you so much for such excellent quality videos!! I printed your instructions and am knitting while viewing the video - using both guarantees successful knitting! I would love to see a video from the very beginning for two -color brioche. As a fairly new knitter, it's tough to cast-on, join the yarn and know exactly what it should look like. But getting past the first part and knitting in pattern is so rewarding! Can't wait to see the fluffy scarf I will end up with.

    Thank you, this video is very helpful. I always enjoy your videos and find your explanations so easy to understand. If I have the choice between VeryPink Knits and another video, I always watch yours because I know it will be good--to the point but a thorough demonstration. I'm excited to try the brioche stitch, I recently learned about it from a yarn maker at the farmer's market. I've been knitting for years and I've never attempted it.

    You can bind off brioche stitch by working pretty much a normal row, but add pulling one stitch over the other (like a normal BO). Continue the k2togs as you did, knit the stitches you would normally slip, and bind-off as you work through that row. Hope that helps!

    Joan - you can bind-off the brioche stitch (one or two color) by working a regular row of the pattern, and binding-off (passing one stitch over the other) as you work across the row.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @11Wizardry9911 Did you see that I have provided a free PDF pattern download to accompany this video? That will show you where each of the stitches go. :) The link to the pattern is available just below the video in the video description area. There really aren't any yarn overs in Brioche Stitch.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I demonstrate this in the video - after you yarn-forward, the yarn does go back to work the next stitch, but not between the needles. Instead, the yarn is "flopped" over the right needle. Hope that helps!

    I think it's a great video, as are all of your videos. Very high quality. The only difference I can tell is you're working with thinner yarn on smaller needles, as opposed to the bulky yarn you usually demonstrate with. I suppose that makes it slightly harder to see what is going on. But your explanation was still clear and just as helpful as I've come to expect.

  • @verymoon630
    @verymoon630 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just want to say, you are just awesome. I had some issues with figuring out 2 color brioche, because somewhere I got lost remembering which row I was on. You completely answered that question with "always start with your contrasting color, if both are on the same side, and then catch up with your main color". Thank you a thousand times! Little intimidated with that yarn over with the purl side, worried it winds up being a double yarn over, does it?

  • @verypinkknits

    @charlieheartsmusic You start with the long-tail cast on...I have a video for that, which can be found if you use the search on my channel page. Also, if you follow the link to the free pattern download on my website, it will be easier for you to work this stitch.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @11Wizardry9911 Have you downloaded the free pattern that accompanies this video? The pattern, as written, maintains the same number of stitches from row to row. "YF" and "YB" mean "yarn forward" and "yarn back", which means to pull the working yarn forward between the two needles, or back between the two needles. The link to the pattern is available below the video in the video description.

    • @milheg5622
      @milheg5622 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is point 'yb and yf' ? Isn't it really yarn over? What do I consider the front? Set up row or row no1?

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @mersylla Yes - this info is available in the free pattern download (a link to this is provided in the video description, just below the video). You'll want to cast on an odd number of stitches.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sorry you're disappointed. Most viewers are happy with the quality of my videos. They are all in HD, but it's unlikely that you're viewing it in HD unless you adjust your settings. Additionally, you can adjust the viewing screen to full screen for a bigger view.
    This technique is a combination of stitches, and for intermediate knitters. If you need help with any one of the individual stitches used, I have a video for each one of the stitches, demonstrated clearly and slowly. Good luck!

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yes - the setup row does end up being an increase row. Then, subsequent rows have you both increasing and decreasing, keeping the stitch count the same.

    • @Stacey.B
      @Stacey.B 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is this available in slow motion? I am having a very difficult time with brioche. I found a beautiful cowl pattern with curved sections like leaves and I can't even get the regular stitches down. Do you have any more tips? Thank you Stacy your the 1st source I always go to.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @11Wizardry9911 The stitches that look like yarn overs are made by doing the "yf" and "yb" movements of the yarn. You slip the stitch with the contrasting color (cc) just like you would slip any other stitch - move it from the left needle to the right, without working it.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ladymistreschristine I'm not familiar with the stitch you're talking about, but it sounds like it would end up looking a lot like this. Knitting the stitch below is going to stretch that stitch, much like slipping stitches does in this pattern.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes - the first stitch of each row is a slipped stitch, and it's slipped knit-wise. Not a huge deal, if you slip knit-wise or purl-wise. Slipping it knit-wise just creates a twist on the selvage edge.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've found it's best to work the BO row like any other row of the pattern (including yarn-overs), but bind-off as you go along. That will keep your stitch count the same, and make the BO look better. Good luck!

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @11Wizardry9911 Yes, but then you're knitting two together (k2tog) the same number of times in the same row, keeping your stitch count the same.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @StephAteYourEars Hmm...without actually seeing your work, I can't tell you exactly what is going wrong...but if you're ending up with an extra stitch, I have to guess that you're adding a yarn over or missing a k2tog somewhere. I hope you find how you're adding a stitch so you can move on to Row 4! :)

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TineeTerror To start the brioche stitch, I used the long tail cast on. TH-cam won't let me give you a direct link here in the comments, but you can see my video by searching for "Knitting Help - Long-Tail Cast-On" on my channel page.

  • @verypinkknits

    You would need to CO 49 stitches to work the pattern as I've written it, but you'll also have to do more modifications because my pattern is knit flat, and I'm guessing you're planning to knit socks in-the-round. You might want to search Ravelry to see if someone else already has a pattern out there for Brioche Stitch socks - that would be easier. :)

  • @Treegona
    @Treegona 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've experimented a bit with 2 color brioche and find that making a 'normal' scarf this way is really hard for me because of the odd 4 row repeat. Knitting a round/tube scarf with two colors is a lot easier, excpecially if you can do both colors at once.
    I think the end result is cooler than a normal brioche scarf too, bc it's round and reversable.

    I have never tested out working decreases with this stitch, so I can't really answer your question. I know there is information out there on decreasing in Brioche if you search for it. Personally, I think this stitch is best used in pieces that don't require decreasing, since the decreases do mess up the flow of the intricate rib.

It's great that you know how to knit and are able to do it so quickly, however for someone such as myself, who is a novice, I find slower "knitting" demos easier to understand and less frustrating. Any chance you have a slower demo on how to stitch brioche for the beginners?

    Hi! I have been trying the Brioche stich rfom the last 2 days and have had to unravel my swatch like 10 times! I feel so stupid!
    I am able to do the yarn over, slip as if to purl and knit the Brioche stich.
    But I am getting terribly confused at the ends. Sometimes I land up with 2 stiches before the Bricoh. Sometimes the stich at the end is forming such a large loop (despite me doing the slips at the start for selvedge) Sometimes I have no stich left at the end to knit. Just WHAT am I doing wrong? Please help!

    I love this. I was getting tired of just regular stockinette. So thank you. But how do you cast off with this?

      earlandbob - your best bet for binding-off is to bind off “in pattern”. With the brioche stitch, that means to work a normal row, but bind off as you work along. That will keep you from increasing in the BO row.

      This video is meant to demonstrate the combination of stitches - if you need help on any individual stitch (knit, purl, k2tog, etc) I have slower demonstration videos for each of those.

      I had trouble following (and every other tut on brioche) because Im a continental knitter. Maybe thats what you're having trouble seeing? I think it might be a little different. Correct me if Im wrong, but i think theres also a setup row that you yarn over, slip and just knit one, to get the brioche started.

    I also have a question about binding off this pattern. How would you bind off in the pattern rather than just binding off knitwise the whole way? Would I still yarn over? Thanks for your help!

    Ive seen a pattern that looks really similar to this one... it's a knit one, knit the stitch under, repeat. Idk if the two color works with this but i've made a scarf that looks just like this and i was wondering if this was the same type of thing? Thanks :D

    I am strugglin'! I watched the video three or four times (and I will probably continue 'til I get it), but my brain can't wrap around the fact that we're knitting two together and keeping the same amount of stitches on the needles. We use different techniques (though I WISH I could figure yours our--it's so efficient) and I can't figure if you're knitting with the yarn in front or if you're using your usual quick-knitting technique. I gotta figure there's something else going on though. My work keeps shrinking and I feel like a crazy person. Lol.

      There is a free download that accompanies this video that spells out each step! Be sure you're working from those instructions.
