Gibson G Force Robot Tuners SUCK

  • Real life issues with the G Force/Robot Tuners.
    *Gibson's Recommended Method for tuning was to STRUM your String. The same issues show up when tuning String-By-String*
    This was a great feature for "Non-Playing" Guitar Players. Someone who somewhat plays guitar that wants to "Impress" people by owning a Self-Tuning Guitar. But in Practice it doesn't really work well. The fact that it tunes Up and Down to pitch is a MAJOR PROBLEM. Especially for Lead Players. Once you bend a string it WILL go flat.
    If You like these Tuners... that's not an issue. But it's very hard to understand how you would get through a single song in a live situation if you are a lead player.

    I'm a performing songwriter and I have several songs in various alternate tunings. This would be a great use case for this product.

      Then you need to prepare couple jokes to share with the audience when the tuner is doing it’s random tuning… it got “confused” and actually take a good amount of time to finally get tuned…
      You will be happy with Roadie 3 I think. It’s an auto tuner, but it’s handheld and single string each time. Ends up being way faster - pretty much one pass of the 6 strings and you done. App configurable tuning, accurate to cents, so you can do the James Taylor tuning easily. I love it.

    I love them. Locking tuners that wrap and tune your strings for you, awesome. I'll never remove them from my Les Paul.

    I always use the single string mode, one after another. Have the brass nut replaced by a free titanium one supplied by Gibson.

    Can you still manual tune if you have this? I just bought a '15 LP with the G Force. Not convinced it's working.

    This is one of the better videos on the subject. Please forgive me for laughing all the way through it, but you did a great job of highlighting the frustration in using this tuner.
    I’m sure that these work great for some players, but I didn’t see this as a benefit for me.
    When I tuned manually, and just like you confirmed, it felt like I was breaking the tuning key (even though we’re not).
    It’s a cool tool, but I think that you either have an application where it’s of benefit, or it’s completely unnecessary.

    For some people like me, its a nice thing. As a Pro, i would not use it.
    Don't damn it, there is a market for it. For me, i can tell, its fun and useful, and it is working fine for me.

    Why solve the design problem of the Les Paul constantly going out of tune by changing the scale length or the the break angle at the nut of the d and g string? Wouldn't it be so much better to invent something no one's was asking for and have the tuners just do it all by themselves. Then let's change the entire Les Paul Line up by having all models come standard with them on.

    • @littlefury
      @littlefury ปีที่แล้ว

      If you solve that design problem, it doesn't sound like a Les Paul anymore, because scale length and headstock break angle play a huge part in the tone of that guitar. The solution is to pay the utmost attention to the nut itself being properly cut, sanded and lubricated, but it takes time and skills, therefore it costs money.

    I have a 2015 SG and tried the geforce for two months then took them off and replaced with the correct set for an SG. Now it's a great guitar.
    Put the geforce on an old acoustic ( can be done ) and only kept it in standard tuning yet they totally went dead after 2 years.
    Not reliable and prone to faliure.

    So, with that last point, bending the string makes it sharp. Then , if you tune again, it is tuned higher automatically??

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The concern is how it tunes. A good rule to follow (especially for Les Paul’s) is to always tune UP to pitch, never down. Tune up, tug on your string to put tension on the post and nut, then tune again... only up. When you tune down to pitch it is automatically loose around the post and nut. So the moment that you bend the string it puts tension on the post and nut and pulls the string flat. The Robot Tuners tune up and down so they automatically become flat when you bend. Cheers -Ryan

      @@Crypticmaskguitar I think you’re just supposed to stretch your strings when you put them on lol

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not if you are a lead player. Try this: Tune down to pitch and then pull up on your string at the bridge pickup… you will notice that it will go flat. Do the same tuning up to pitch… still goes a little flat. That’s why you should tune each string more than once. If you are a Rhythm Player and not a Lead Player then it’s not that big of a deal. But once you start bending strings… if you haven’t tugged on your strings of will go out of tune. The Robot Tuners would have been great if they could have somehow pulled tension and then tuned a second time. But again any Lead Player knows to tune more than once and to pull tension. Cheers -Ryan

    it should down tune the string then slowly crank it up to pitch, why can't they just program it to work that way?

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would still cause the string to go flat after bending. After tuning a string up to pitch you need to tug on the string to cause it to go flat and then tune up to pitch again. Cheers -Ryan

    Lol....how about tuning one string a time?... Someone gave me a set hooked it up to my SG I tuned one string at a time I don't strum the whole damn guitar what the hell man I've never seen anybody do that before.... I even had a snark hooked up to it to make sure it was being tuned properly and it was... they were brand new strings ...bent the hell out of them stretched them out tuned them again...one string at a time.... And you don't have to keep pressing buttons you start at the low E once it's tuned it just jumps to the A string on its own and keeps going...

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      …and yet… the advertised way to tune it… was strumming… one string at a time or strumming still has the same result. Poor tuning and the moment you bend any string… it will go out of tune because it tunes down to pitch. Cheers -Ryan

    So in a nutshell... it's a tuner that doesn't. :D
    Man if only they could have gotten their requirements right. Tune to within 2-3 cents to make it sound right, then worry about the beat frequencies. Seems like they're not getting there at all.
    Also, they should be absolutely quiet.

    I think the intention was that f… Gibson very often went out of tune when playing, right? I have a 1961 Gibson ‚Les Paul‘ SG guitar, which really has problems to stay into tune. Anyway, this syrem in Gibson is history.

      I replaced mine a while ago with some vintage Gibson Kluson style tuners off of a Les Paul Deluxe (Green Button). It’s a nice idea, for sure. My boss has an SG Faded he got super cheap and I might give him these for it. You have the best TH-cam Name, by the way hahaha Cheers -Ryan

    Yeah. I’ve got a 2015 Les Paul Jr. Should be the simplest electric guitar ever. But the G Force tuners make it completely un-usable. The low E string wont get anywhere near in tune. Auto or manual. 🤷‍♂️
    Im gonna replace the G Force with traditional tuners. Hopefully that makes this guitar useable.

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Developing Costs wouldn’t have been all that much... they licensed it from another company who created it. Their exclusivity deal was what killed them! Gibson’s quest for “Innovation” is one of the things that players have complained about for years. Whenever they introduce a new body type in anyway people complain... I say continue to focus on QC and stop weight relief on Les Pauls and they will be fine. Cheers -Ryan
