the Polytune is SUPER useful if you use floating trems. since it shows all the strings, which are sharp which are flat, you can then adjust one knowing how it will affect the other one. also if you can see all are flat or sharp, then you just adjust the trem angle using the trem claw screws at the back of the guitar
Peterson Strobostomp Mini is amazing. The peterson tuners do have switchable buffers as well. In the large one it's in the battery compartment and on the mini it's in the menu.
The TC polytune clip-on is the best tuner I’ve used. For my bass, I removed the clip, put a bit of Velcro on the tuner body and a bit of the corresponding Velcro on the pickguard, so I always have the tuner without having it hanging off the headstock.
Daddario makes a tiny behind the headstock tuner that uses a screw from one of the tuning pegs, invisible from the front and perfect for any acoustics or electrics
Absolutely love my Peterson StroboStomp HD, especially for my 12-string acoustic. The sweetened 12-string tuning helps to compensate for the darned B strings never sounding quite in tune. And for those of a certain age such as myself: don't go for the StroboStomp Mini. While the tuning action is the same, the screen and buttons lead to more squinting than the larger version.
Before I had a proper tuner, I had a roommate who was also a guitarist who had perfect pitch (unlike me) and would occasionally grab my guitar out of frustration and tune it for me!
I have the Boss TU-3 and the Peterson strobe. Both work very well, but the Peterson is superb ! It is by far the most accurate IMHO and has several alternate and modified tuning options as well.
I'm glad I tuned into this video. I have the Boss and one day my tuner started to do this crazy strobing thing and I finally found the button to get it back to normal and I was today years old when I learned what it was actually doing 😂😂😂😂😂
Ordered a Peterson Strobostomp HD this afternoon. This vid was part of that decision. I appreciate the very reliable and confidence-inspiring comparison reviews (and always light-hearted entertainment associated with guitars) on the Anderton's channel. Seeing this review for the first time a month ago, I remember Pete saying, "Ah! It's a good tuner, isn't it!" at 11:05. That comment stuck with me as I shopped the market and arrived at today's purchase choice. The Captain calling it "le creme de la creme" at 12:08 cemented my satisfaction as I now await its arrival in the mail in a week or so.
I sold my pedal tuner when I discovered the Boss Tu-5 clip. Importantly for me, it's rechargeable via easy, included USB cable. I use it every day, and in more than a year, I've only had to recharge it once. Easy to read, works great, don't have to plug in to your board to use it, rechargeable, & Boss quality. Can't recommend it enough.
The Peterson can show you if the harmonics are in tune with the fundamental. The inner ring is the fundamental and the outer ring is the first harmonic. With some instruments, such as piano, you tune the higher strings to be in tune with the HARMONICS of the lower strings, not to the fundamental. This is called stretching the octaves. This is the Strobotuner's claim to fame. It can show you the intonation of the fundamentals and their harmonics simultaneously.
I own all of these except the first clip-on. I do own a few Snarks though, which are similar. My 20+ year old TU-2 is also still working extremely well despite many battle scars
The thing I like about the bigger Polytunes and the Korg Pitchblack I have too is that you can power other pedals out of them. I got a smaller Polytune recently and was a bit disappointed that they didn't have the 9v out.
A440 tuning fork. Hold it against the guitar pick guard (sometimes even against my head 😜) 0:32 and tune the A. The rest was on me to get right! Pitch pipes to my ears never sounded right. Of course that was 1970! Now: TC poly mini 3 and Peterson clip on strobe. 👍🏻
I love my Korg pitchblack I have an old one plus the mini version. I don’t know why people keep using the Boss TU I find them very hard to use and imprecise whereas the Korg smoothly guides you to the pitch from a half step down Plus an honourable mention of the phone app Plusadd tuner lite (free)
I love strobe tuners. I used a peterson for a while until I realized that you can change the mode of a Helix to use a strobe tuner instead of the standard tuner.
I have the strobostomp mini, which comes built in with a high quality low impedance buffer and true bypass if you’d like. Crazy accurate and has sweetened tunings for anything you can imagine. You can find it bundled with the stroboclip for a discount on a popular online instrument dealer
First of all, the spinning circle is pretty big and bright. The Peterson has a massive display compared to the others (did you watch the video, btw?). And strobe tuning needs less focus than waiting for that green light in the middle to pop up.
Small clip on tuners are supposed to run forever but in reality some go through the button batteries in a month. I remove the battery and clip it between the jaws of the tuner. I haven't changed the battery in two years and still use it every time I pick up the guitar
Yeah they have parasitic draw that eats the battery 24/7. Like most devices these days, unfortunately. Shame, those button cells aren't cheap at most stores!
The latest Peterson clip on is USB rechargeable and lasts ages on a single charge. It has an incredibly bright multicoloured display and it includes a battery status indicator too. I have been using Peterson's exclusively for twenty plus years. I use the handy clip on my guitars when not using my board.
Great video as always. I still have my pitch pipe for tuning, back in the dinosaur days. On my list for gear is a full-size Polytune. For the suggestion box on the "Complete Guide to..." series and videos: Noise gates.
When I got my first guitar I had to use a pitch pipe. Nobody else in my family knew anything about guitar, so I was on my own. On top of that, I was told that if I didn't learn how to play in one month that everything would be returned for a refund. I was 13 years old. No pressure. Thank God for Mel Bay, perseverance, and Black Sabbath.
I have the Peterson stomp and clip-on... If you ever used a Peterson in the Sweetened guitar setting, you'll never, and I mean NEVER want to use anything else, EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! It's absolutely unique, and incidentally, proprietary... But does something that is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AND MAGICAL TO YOUR TUNING on a guitar, and, again, you'll absolutely NEVER, EVER want to use anything else EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
My boss gx100 has a polyphonic tuning display along with a regular one, it does come in handy for a quick glance to see if the guitar is out of tune or if your fingers are the culprit
For upright bass the TC tuner works very well. I have the older, larger one. I mostly play upright bass but also guitar and a tuner that works well on both is nice.
Nice video! Note that Peterson Strobo stom HD can also do true-bypass. It just means you cannot tune while you hear the guitar (it is bypassed). It also does buffered bypass, and buffered with monitor mode (i.e. tuning whilst you don't mute the guitar).
I have had a couple of the Snark tuners. Last one I got is rechargeable. We also have the Boss tuner works great. Just got one of the Polytune stomp boxes. It is very nice. I like the strum and see all the strings thing. I also remember tuning from a Sony electric metronome I had that had A 440. I also tuned to a piano for my young years and pitch pipes.

i have a regular tuner but i like the clip on super snark now adays.. in the 70s when i played in a band we used a round pitch pipe to tune our guitars. worked great unless your were tone deaf
Love them for their convenience, but I don't think that many clip-ons are made too well...very careful with my stuff so they weren't abused...just play at home...had a Fender clip-on that just stopped working after a few months, & my Snark literally fell apart, which seems to be a common complaint. Also, both went through batteries very quickly. Just got a PRS rechargeable...seems to be well made & has an easy to read, large display...will see how long it lasts...at least, no batteries to change! Thanks for the video...always learn something!🙂🎸
I had been using app tuners and liked a strobe style one the best. Nearly bought the next model up Petersen but glad I went for the larger Polytune as it is so easy to use in poly mode. With chromatic tuners I wasted my time trying to get a string spot on when it didn't matter to my ears.
PolyTune is great but Peterson is the winner for me. I have the Strobostomp mini and it very quickly kicked the Polytune off my board for ever. Put the polyphonic tuning aside, the Petersons do everything else that the PolyTune does and more and is massively customizable for anyone who wants it too.

For all parents wanting to buy their child a guitar this is essential! They can do everything right and if it’s not in tune they don’t know if they are doing something wrong….
Nice content that doesn't forget the basics. Makes me laugh all the more that by far the most-watched vid on my channel with currently 149k views, is a sample of tenor banjo tunings for a client who wasn't up to speed on such things. To this day, I WISH I could choose the advertisers for it so it would be Snark, TC Poly, and Peterson.
So many choices nowadays. Back in the 80's I used to tune my guitar with... a Banana! 😃 Then I learnt to tune by ear. Now I use a Fender clip-on for convenience.
I have a Snark HZ 'Super Tight' Clip-on which responds quickly and is accurate, however I still need to temper the tuning across the guitar strings so my open strings sound the same note as the fretted string (Top E fretted 3 G same as open G etc) I had the super cheap clip on tuners and they are a waste of money, you can hear the pitch change but the tuner isn't sensitive and fast enough to display the subtle change in pitch. If you end up with strings a bit up and down relative to each other the guitar just sounds a mess.
I did not watch the video yet but I can tell you I had a Korg pitchblack that was terrible, I never sounded in tune until I decided to use the HXStomp tuner...
To those who own a Peterson strobe stomp HD pedal, does your battery drain fast? I bought one a month ago and the battery it came with died after a couple of weekends of good use. I’m on the second battery and it’s already lost a bar. Just wondering if others have experienced something similar?
I’m a blind person learning the guitar. I’m surprised that there isn’t a pedal for tuning that speaks. I currently use an app called Talking Tuner but it’s not that accurate and doesn’t always hear my guitar. Would be much easier if I could plug one into my guitar and it tells me if it’s sharp or flat.
I use the little clip-on Snark Tuner- but I constantly leave it on and run my battery down. You would think it would catch my eye and I would turn it off but- nope. I ignore it and then when I go to use it, it's already on. So I just keep a pack of the batteries it takes on me, in my gig bag. Now they make a rechargeable USB version though- I need to get it. Actually- I need to invest in a strobe tuner- they say if you're going to set your own guitars up- which I do- they're best for setting intonation. But man, it's hard to make yourself pay hundreds for a piece of gear like a tuner- no one hears it, there's nothing sexy about it- it's just a tuner. But- it's a really good tuner they say.
I personally prefer a tuner I can have in my signal chain, I've lost too many clip on tuners. The biggest difference I've noticed is when I'm on stage. With my BOSS TU-2 no one has to listen to me tune which I like for local bars, it's a lot easier then reaching for the volume knob, especially if you use your volume to dial in your distortion like I do. Band mates, neighbors, and audience members typically don't want to hear you tune. I haven't really noticed a difference in accuracy though.
From comparing a Snark to phone apps to a Peterson as a reference, my findings were ... - Peterson, so accurate it's almost hard to get the spinning to stop. You'll develop a really delicate touch micro adjusting peg heads! - phone apps were way off on lower strings to the point of being useless, but pretty accurate on higher frequencies. Though that could be my particular phone having a lousy microphone - I've seen yt vids where all strings worked ok. - the Snark is surprisingly accurate (after the phone disappointment anyway) though its green zone for "in tune" is a little bit wide. Good enough though, and you can adapt your method (eg tune til it first hits green, then nip it a smidge more)
The clip-ons are great for acoustic or convenience , but I believe a tuner being in the signal chain is better. My Peterson Strobostomp XD is definitely the most accurate. I use the Peterson when doing set-ups and adjusting intonation as well because of it's accuracy.
i have the Peterson strobo stomp. One feature I would like is the tuner display would power off instead of having to unplug the instrument cable. that'll burn up batteries, must use power supply, My cheap other 30$ tuner shuts off by itself.... Cant find a setting or anything about it online either.....
None of these tuners would work for me as I’m a blind guitar player. I have used tuning its before, but I now use an app on my iPhone called talking tuner which tells me by voice if the note I’m playing is either flat sharp or in tune. I wish some company would make an audio tuner that would play the notes of the strings so I could just tune to the correct pitch. The tuners do sound very cool though. Thanks for a good video.
Mm if you do tuners, then please try them also on a 5 string bass… Next to none of those tuners seem to do a low b string properly, finally found that a clip-on “Super Tight Snark” is usable after trying a lot , including the Boss one …
Back in the day when I didn't have a tuner, I'd pick up the home phone and the dial tone was in "A"..then proceeded to tune
That’s amazing! Another reason we should all go back to land lines. Cell phones are a pain… I get way too many people contacting me… like my wife!
Necessity is a Mother.

I use a Waza Craft TU-3 on my board and a Peterson strobe clipon. (i have a tuning fork in my Hiscox case lolo)
So many choices nowadays. Back in the 80's I used to tune my guitar with... a Banana! 😃
Then I learnt to tune by ear. Now I use a Fender clip-on for convenience.
I have the more affordable TC Unitune clip without the poly function, works great.
I have a Snark HZ 'Super Tight' Clip-on which responds quickly and is accurate, however I still need to temper the tuning across the guitar strings so my open strings sound the same note as the fretted string (Top E fretted 3 G same as open G etc)
I had the super cheap clip on tuners and they are a waste of money, you can hear the pitch change but the tuner isn't sensitive and fast enough to display the subtle change in pitch.
Informative and watchable = result!

Ultimate guide to setting up intonation and string height?
Is a plug in pedal tuner more accurate than a clip on tuner (even a supposedly really good clip on like a Peterson strobe clip on tuner)?
You can switch the buffer off on the strobostomp and have true bypass when it's off. Without that, you couldnt use old school fuzzes after it etc.
i have the Peterson strobo stomp.
Mm if you do tuners, then please try them also on a 5 string bass…
Next to none of those tuners seem to do a low b string properly, finally found that a clip-on “Super Tight Snark” is usable after trying a lot , including the Boss one …
Android Pitchlab and your done .. better than all
The StarKist is my brand of tuna. although the BOSS TU-3 has been identified in ancient cave paintings.
I really love the Peterson, however the display is not quite up to the pricepoint, having a rather inferior view angle before inverting.
I've never seen that Polytuner before, can it do other tunings or does it only work with E Standard, and can it do 7 strings?
All Boss pedals have buffered bypass. Many people put a Boss tuner at the front of their effects chain for the buffer.
