    Just to point out, she is asked to teach them, her lesson is 'stab the orcs, now, come at me'. And then proceeds to NOT demonstrate, or teach, stabbing techniques. So she completely fails to do the one thing she was supposed to be doing, and turns it into an attempt at showing off.

      Well, the problem to me is still that she is meant to be a mage....so anything that comes after her becoming somehow a "sword master" is bs...even if it was done right. ( But I do get that this is not the focus of the video)

      She told them to stab the orcs, so the first thing the guy tries is to attempt two thrusts. He doesn’t follow up because she explicitly told him it was unnecessary. “Just thrust? Ok, I’ll try thrusting”. And then she proceeds to prove how it doesn’t work.

      Except thy're not. Orcs are goblins in Tolkien, and they are little misshapen vermin, with the biggest of them being about the size of a hobbit, or a bit taller. A trained human warrior should be able to handle multiple at once with armor. Tall, strong orcs were the Uruk-Hai freaks of nature that only existed thanks to Saruman. Otherwise, an orc/goblin needed a warg to be properly vicious, and even then a dwarf kid like Dain was able to kill Azog in one blow as soon as he was distracted. The orcs' main thing was numbers for a reason.
      The goblin/orc difference is a D&D thing.

A Dunedain Warrior could certainly take one multiple Orcs like in the Battle of the Gladden Fields, but Dunedain are basically-super humans

      That's where I think older movies have advantage over newer stuff. Sadly Rings of Power is not the only example. In the past when they would do fight scenes, they would quite often choose actors who knew their stuff. Or would at least train them before the movie. This is specialy true with action movies with hand to hand fighting - Bruce Lee, Chuck Noris, Van Damme, Jackie Chan, Jet Li ... having martial arts background was kinda their thing. That's why they were cast. Now-a-days, looks and folowers on social media are far more important to land a role.
      When making a movie about swrod fighting, to me at least, it makes sense that the first place to look is Olympic fencers, HEMA practitioners or even kendo practitioners. Then adapt their style to the movie weapons, which these guys can do very fast, and do the selection there via auditions. Then promote the crap out of them via socials during the run up to the movie. Result is, you get a movie with excelent fight scenes, very kinetic and much more real than relying on CGI and dumb stunts. And if it's good, you get a new action star. Win - win situation.
      Actress who plays Galadriel dosen't know how to fence. She isn't a fighter. She hasn't even done hand to hand fighting. And thus is just not believable and looks lame. She is a misscast IMO.

    Compare this to Jon Snow training at Castle Black in which we learn:
    - Jon is a skilled swordsman (something we didn't know before)
    - He's not fitting in and isn't instantly liked by the other recruits
    - He believes he is better than the other recruits because he is a noble
    Jon grows as a character; he begins _teaching them_ how to fight instead of just showing off and as a result earns their respect and friendship. And he learns to accept his high-born status doesn't grant him preferential treatment in the Night's Watch.

    "Don't try and wear an orc down. Not only does pain from minor wounds rarely phase them, but orcs are renowned for their endurance. Some have been known to run for entire days in full armour. Never try to gain an advantage by tiring one out. You will lose. Go for a killing blow as soon as you can."
    Perhaps then she could have given some detail on the kinds of armour orcs tend to wear, pointing out typical weak spots. We actually saw Legolas do this in the Fellowship, advising other elven archers around him on the weaker points in Uruk armour as the Battle of Helm's Deep was beginning.

    I said this in your actual review but the "fight with your feet" line is very weird because this is a sentiment in a lot of sports. It seems like the writers took this line from maybe a sport clip or something without knowing the meaning. Coaches will say "play with your feet, not your arms" or "box with your feet, not your fists" but there is always a follow up explaining what it means. Like "bow with your feet, not your fist. Your ability to move and generate force through your feet and hips will win more fights (kinetic chain) than just focusing on your punches. Essentially, it's an easy phrase. The issue here is, she doesn't explain the phrase. if she was like "fight with your feet not your arms. Your mobility and positioning will win fights, not just your ability to swing a sword" or "you generate power through your feet and hips, not your arms (referring to the kinetic chain) " or something along those lines to give the phrase meaning then later, we see a soldier repeat this while fighting, that would make the phrase make sense. However, it's clear that the writers heard that phrase, didn't think about the context or how it was used and just threw it into their show. She doesn't even demonstrate anything. I don't see how this would be helpful to anyone. It would be like if Bruce Lee said, "Be like water" and didn't explain what the phrase meant and expected everyone to understand what that means.

    Shad, now that were talking about the lore regarding the Numenoreans. Let me add something about the lore regarding the canonical battle tactics of the Numenorians and I do hopw you'll able to read this.
    The Glamhoth (Sindarin for "the yelling Horde") or Orcs mostly rely on their numerical superiority and the Numenoreans themselves rely on superiority in arms, tactics and physical prowess though they are at most, numerically inferior in their battle against the orcs. The best known battle formations that the Numenoreans rely on were the defensive yet flexible phalanx formation called the Thangail, that is Sindarin for "Shield-fence" and the offensive wedge formation called Dirnaith which is Sindarin for Man-Speadhead.
    One of the best known use of the Thangail was during the Battle of the Gladden Fields or more known as the Disaster of the Gladden Fields. And you might say that this was a Numenorean defeat, true but prior their defeat the Numenoreans were able display that despite the overwhelming size of the opponent, they were able to hold and primarily overpower the orcs.
    The High-King Isildur and his two hundred strong retinue, taking the high ground and forming a Thangail were able to hold back waves upon waves of orcs. Despite being inferior in number, their superior weapons, physical strength and height were able to overcome and literally tower above the strongest and tallest orc. Sadly as the tale recounts, as the Numenoreans were able to push back the orcs into forests they were lured into low ground and they failed to take into account the hidden reserves of orcs that were kept and hidden in the forests who sprang up, surrounded and almost slaughtered the Numenoreans. Only three of the two hundred strong retinue survived and a servant whom Isildur sent ahead carrying the tokens of his House like the shards of Narsil. Isildur and his older sons were killed. Late but luckily for the three survivors of the massacre, an army of ax-wielding woodsmen were able to respond and caused the orcs to retreat.
    Despite being a known as a Numenorean defeat the events prior to such defeat was a testament to how incredibly strong and terrible in their wrath are the Numenoreans are in battle despite being numerically inferior.

"Fight with your feet" - don't just stand still and wait for the enemy to strike at you, use your balance, be aware of how you're moving, your footwork is important too. But the writers don't know how to write, that is the major problem of this show. If they could write a decent script, it would gloss over the "wait a minute, how many ships? how many days?" problems.

    Aragorn vs the Uruk (Lurtz?) fight from fellowship quite clearly demonstrates that orcs have a pretty good tolerance for pain. I know it’s a “hero” orc, but it takes a knife to the leg; carries on fighting, pulls the knife out, licks its own blood from the blade before chucking it at Aragorn. Aragorn manages to take it’s sword arm off, and then it gets fully impaled and DRAGS THE SWORD DEEPER so it can shout in Aragorns face/ potential bite range. It finally dies when Aragorn takes it’s head off.
    So, yeah, don’t think prioritizing the gut wound is a great tactic.
    Edit: A lot have people have mentioned that Uruk are higher quality orcs and therefore more resilient, which is definitely a valid point. They don’t even exist at this point in middle earth history now I think about it.

    Rewatching this, I've been hit by a bit of an epiphany. Fight choreographers who don't know anything about how to use swords/other weapons seem to believe that an attack has to fly true. You know how some games have it where if you hit the attack button that's it, your character is then stuck in the animation unable to move while the enemy can? That. That's what the people in this clip and so many other shows/movies are doing! That's why when Shad screams out how they're aiming for air, they actually aren't. They're aiming for where she was when they started the attack and so MUST continue with the strike even though she's moved away.

    • @waylander9265
      @waylander9265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You sort of right in regards to once a strike starts it must be carried out to completion like a video game, but there’s also a lot of strikes that are deliberately missed or aimed at the sword. For example the first strike at Galadriel, she doesn’t move her body she just twists. Had that attack been aimed properly it would have gone straight into her shoulder

    • @morlath4767
      @morlath4767 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@waylander9265 Stuff like that just seems like really bad editing/camera work. I'm pretty sure there is a way of filming that first strike at Galadriel that would make it look like it was going to hit but wouldn't. Just making sure the actors are out of measure with each other. That way the first strike would look like it's aimed for her body, she moves, and cut to a different angle to show how it would have connected if she hadn't.
      But you're right in that there's a lot of attacks that are deliberately wide for actor safety. The fact that they're all so obvious when watching the sequence is a testament to their lack of having good choreographers and actor training. I have to wonder if the actors had anything more than "make sure the pointy end doesn't hit the other person" sword 'lessons.'

    “Stab, twist, gut.” Reminds me of the fight scene between Aragorn and Lurtz at the end of Fellowship, where Lurtz’s only response to essentially that is to grab the sword and pull himself closer, menacingly. Then Aragorn does the actually smart thing and pulls back to cut his head off, making Lurtz unable to menace anything, because he’s been decapitated. In fact, the advice is so bad I’d consider it evil. Seriously, “Stab, twist, gut.” sounds like a catchphrase for literal orcs. Granted, the show has already portrayed Guyladriel as a terrible person, so it shouldn’t be surprising at all.

    Shad you really nailed it down brilliantly, I read the books yeah Numenoreans are not your average/ordinary men, they are the descendants of the Edain of the 1st age who fought along side elves in the war of wraths against Morgoth. Tolkien described them as strong in body and mind as well as having tall stature ( on average like 7ft tall, Elendil himself is described as 7.11 ft tall so almost like 8 ft). Surely they already know about orcs even enemies far worse than orcs like dragons or balrog. The lore also tells us after the War of Wrath, Tolkien mentioned about this passage in the Silmarillion.
    "Eonwe came among them and taught them ( Numenoreans) ; and they were given wisdom and power and life more enduring than any others of mortal race have possessed."
    We also know that Eonwe being a Maia ( a divine beings not as strong as Valar) but still immensely more powerful than an elf or man, trained and taught the Numenoreans, he was known to be the best of the Ainur with weapons, so it's safe to say that being trained by a Maia with that skillset , should give a better indication that Numenoreans can actually fight. Sadly the depiction of Numenoreans by Amazon is so far from that, they look weak and like some ordinary peasants who doesn't even know how to fight with a blade or swords.
    Showing an elf like Galadriel kicked their asses and humiliated them is just way too over the top . I think it's way too much lol, I don't mind if She beat them at the end during the training scene, since we know Amazon wants girl power in their show, but also for the fact that we know Galadriel is indeed strong being an ancient elf who is already more than thousands of years old by second age and was born before 1st age in the years of the trees. I just wished in that training/sparring scene, Amazon could've treated Numenoreans with a bit of respect considering their origin, like at least give them a chance to be able to stand their ground or fight back in some way. To me they look like noobs who doesn't even have skills in sword fighting.

    • @roselynveren5022
      @roselynveren5022 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      and just to add that Eonwe was referred to as the "greatest of arms in Arda," meaning that he was the best with weapons, one could argue that he is equal if not stronger than Sauron ( being a maia ) as well. In the final battle of the War of the Wrath , Eonwe being the Herald of Manwe, came to aid the Elves and Men by leading a great host of Valar to defeat Morgoth. So yeah I would expect Numenoreans to have some knowledge in weapons combat. Unfortunately I didn't see that in the sparring/training scene. Guyladriel just toying with these poor Numenoreans lol. It looks ridiculous.

    • @Horvath_Gabor
      @Horvath_Gabor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And as usual, there are very simple ways this could've made to work within the confines of the lore while still achieving what they were trying to do here. Just set up that Numenoreans, while long-lived, are still mortals, and over the generations, without opponents on their levels to fight, their combat prowess dulled and became too reliant on their superior physique. That way, the guy acting like a noob could be part of the storytelling, and then he could finally man up, start fighting properly instead of just relying on his superior reach and strength, and then after a close match, Gladriel could still win just due to her opponent being rusty.
      This way, you can have your fight scene, it would have actual meaning, Galadriel would come out of it more impressive by defeating an actually imposing opponent instead of a flailing moron, and it even fits the theme of the plot, where Galadriel is dragging the people who grew too soft in peace back into shape in preparation of a threat only she takes seriously.
      But of course, that kind of thing needs effort and nuance, and making her into the bestest fighter ever where ehs beat swardsmon and doesn't afraid of anything is just easier.

    I also want to point out that young boys (and some young girls, yes) especially in this time period, wrestle, box, rough house. They get into fights. They practice sword fighting with sticks, it's in our genetic makeup (most of us) to do this. It is training. The guys in this fight are tall, look like they are in decent shape, you don't get a physic like that without some good mind muscle connection. It is unbelievable that a young man in his fighting prime, would be so uncoordinated as to lose his balance and fall over from swinging with a 2 pound sword.

    • @JoRoq1
      @JoRoq1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The falling over would be from being put off-balance due to the over-swing or over-extension. Being physically fit gives you a better ability to control a sword swing and thrust, but if you don't properly keep control you can still put yourself beyond your ability to quickly recover and react. This would be especially true when you are expecting to make contact, and so are not prepared to recover when you miss because you expected your target to counter the momentum of your movement.
      A simpler example. Have your ever caught yourself not paying attention on a staircase and either missed a step (not encountering a solid footing where you expected it to be) or reached the bottom earlier than you anticipated (encountering the floor earlier than you expected)? Something as simple as that can throw a person off-balance, regardless of their physical condition.

    • @LivingAnachronism
      @LivingAnachronism 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@JoRoq1 I suppose that is true, but then that just goes back to what Shad says in the video, that not competent person would be swinging that hard. It would have to be a pretty serious surprise with an immense amount of force to actually throw you over. Even if you over swing and don't encounter resistance you were expecting (which if you didn't expect to encounter any resistance, means you were intentionally swinging at nothing on purpose) you just take a step forward and catch yourself. But a kinesthetically capable person, knows their body well enough to understand how much force is reasonable to exert. And if the characters are meant to look like they've never walked before, what kind of story does that tell? Why are they sending the most incompetent people to middle earth? The fight scene itself doesn't tell the story of any of them actually getting better or learning from their mistakes, one of them just wins by accident. It's one thing to have a beat in a fight where an otherwise competent swordsman misjudges something or makes a mistake or the terrain is treacherous, but it can't be the whole fight, because then it diminishes the way we see those characters, and makes whoever is beating them far less impressive.

      The problem here is that they are likely not "young". The Numenoreans are long lived, these _young_ people are likely 30-50 years old already and with that time, even though looking young, would come experience. But plot armor says they need to be incompetent to make Galadriel look amazing.
      Can you imagine if instead, every person in this scene was competent, fast and skilled already, but Galadriel moved so fast and precisely none could touch her. It would have lent even more weight if she had drawn blood, albeit relatively harmlessly on each of her opponents.
      But, you know, if you only have a billion dollars to spend on a show, why would you waste it on a good choreographer, consultant and proper training for your actors? But instead Morfydd Clark needed a shrink to get her through her battle scenes because she had some kind of snowflake reaction to pretend violence.

    I'm glad you pointed out that they were (for some unknown reason) doing their sword training, not only with real swords... but IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET! Not only do they apparently NOT have a barracks, they don't even have a nearby open field where they can train.
    I think they really are just so proud of those amazing palm tree pillars they needed an excuse to get plenty of tight shots of them. 16:47
    These "soldiers", who have, presumably, grown up around many people armed with swords are taking ridiculously long, telegraphed, inaccurate swings with their swords, (holding their swords behind their backs before swinging). In other words, they're acting like they've never even seen a sword before.
    I'd bet that if you gave plastic swords to a bunch of kids, they'd be able to put together a more convincing sword fight.
    Galadriel causes people to fall down or quiver, simply by looking at them at 27:49, 45:00 she sends a guy flying backwards by just swinging her sword at him.
    Thanks for pointing out at 28:37 how Galadriel sends a guy flying off-screen by just giving him a gentle elbow nudge.
    18:07 Galadriel ducks long before she needs to, in fact, she's standing back up by the time the idiot trainee finally gets around to swinging his sword down at the air. Something similar happens at 29:22 where Galadriel ducks long before the trainee slashes over her head.
    29:35 The first time Galadriel just holds out her sword and the trainee just runs into it. 32:29 The second time Galadriel holds out her sword and the trainee runs into it.
    32:00 Thanks for pointing out how the soldier just opens his hand to let Galadriel take his sword.
    34:48 The trainee gets his sword caught on a string... (why are they training in the street?) he stands there with his arm fully extended, keeping his sword stuck. Does that string have some really strong glue on it? Lower your arm! Let gravity work!
    35:49 When you comment "Another person who somehow stumbles back, I don't know what happened to them" I think you're referring to the guy who was somehow shoved back into the wall by Galadriel knocking over some cups on a table (again, why are they training in the street?).
    36:37 Galadriel uses the trainee as a shield... not that she needed to because the female soldier, leaning against the amazing palm tree pillar is just stabbing at air... and then the female soldier suddenly appears "not even close" to the amazing palm tree pillar a second later.
    36:59 The trainee moves behind the amazing palm tree pillars... even though Galadriel is clearly in front of the amazing palm tree pillars and he takes a deliberate high swing at... nothing... only to cut loose the hanging cups (again, why are they training in the street?).
    Like you said, "What are you aiming at!?!, There's no one there!"
    The cups tumble down on his head and he falls on his face.
    37:08 The female trainee is clearly swinging her sword straight up, Galadriel doesn't even have to deflect her blade.
    43:10 Thanks for pointing out how 3-4 blades just magically appear from off-screen and Galadriel somehow blocks them all... and then all the trainees suddenly seem to be frozen by Galadriel's awesomeness.
    46:23 Galadriel cuts the net down onto the two soldiers (I'm sorry you cut out most of this shot, it's one of the most comical parts of the scene). But anyway... 46:28 the two soldiers are cowering against the wall... but there's NO NET! Even though a second earlier they seemed to be desperately trying to get the net to fall on their heads and it seemed to fall over the male soldier's head.
    I wish you would have kept in all the shots of the falling net. It seems to teleport between characters and is good for a few laughs. Eventually, the net reappears around the female soldier's chest.

Like the 1vmob portion reminds me of this one chapter from Rurouni Kenshin where Kenshin teaches the boy character what to do if he needs to deal with mobs, you run away and pace yourself so that the mob gradually thins and you can force a bunch of 1v1s, or you force them into narrow areas that prevents them from surrounding you, and thus forcing them into 1v1s.

      Didn't Miyamoto Musashi use this tactic a few times. For some reason he wasn't very popular at some points of his career and whole schools went after him.
      Also another anime who gives surprisingly decent advice on swordsmanship is Overlord of all things.
      It's basically:
      1) Train your physique.
      2) Practice a few basic attacks until you are really good with them.
      3) Always have a follow-up plan.
      4) Prepare the correct gear.
      So the guy does stay fit. First becomes really good with a simple downward slash and later does follow it up with a vicious kick to the groin. He also wears chainmail under his civilian cloths and dyes his flashy armour black for a stealth mission and always carries healing potions and items that can do basic thief skills.

    Living Anachronism has done a response to your video. He added information about stage combat and the mistakes made during the filming of this fight. There are things that need to be done to keep actors safe that would make a fight unrealistic. But tricks are supposed to be used to hide these things from the audience. When it's done well, you get a realistic looking fight scene. When it's not, you get something like this. It's a combination of choreography and good camera work that's needed to make a scene work.

They've clearly not gone over the basics with the actors, even in something as 'basic' as modern sabre forms (which is where my personal experience is mostly) but the overall phrasing of the moves are exaggerated and executed in such a way which would work on a stage where the audience are 15m away or more, have only one perspective, and can't pause or see from more than one angle like on the film/TV. That sort of choreography, there's a lot more license for unrealistic exchanges in theatre. These factors don't seem to have been taken into account by the producers therefore it has been choreographed to look flashy with minimal training requirements to be safe.

      @@jlocksjedi7224 I was trained by a group of stage and film stuntmen (as they are called). One of the great differences that I recall from stage to film is that you have to be closer and the choregraphed action is actually faster in film. Since this is filmed and the showrunners would have to have an expert on set, one would think that they could stage a better fight scene; not one that looks like they are fighting on a stage. Btw, I was certified by stuntmen for broadsword, rapier, small sword, and sword & shield. Each had as you say different forms for combat but understanding how to fight someone else is also missing from this fight. Its like in poker, you play the person, not the cards.

I remember the guy who trained him said he was a natural. Although I wonder if he meant for stunt fight scenes, normal sword fights or both. At the very least I remember Aragorn tended to fight smart when he could. In Fellowship of the Ring at the Battle of Amon Hen, we see Aragorn retreat to a ruin, going up some stairs to gain a height advantage and also forcing the Uruks to fight him one at a time, since they could have easily killed him if he was surrounded.
    I even remember seeing the behind the scenes of Orlando Bloom practicing archery. These guys actually developed entirely new skills in order to play their parts. Whereas now with a *BILLION* dollar budget Amazon just gets people to randomly swing swords around and then call it a day.
