How To Build A PVC Roller Coaster Track

  • I've had a great many questions about exactly how to build a PVC Roller Coaster. Here is the first of what I suspect will be many, many answers!
    • Use 1 1/2" Diameter Schedule 40 PVC, mostly in 20-foot lengths.
    • Use 2x4 lumber (which is actually 1.5" x 3.5") for the ties (cross braces)
    • To make an 18 inch wide (gauge) track, first cut the ties to 15" lengths, then use a 1 and 7/8 inch diameter hole saw or forstner bit with a drill press to "cove" the ends of the ties.
    • Use 3.5 inch long #10 deck screws with a T-25 torx fitting to fasten the PVC rails to the ties.
    • Set the screws at a 45˚ angle to the top dead center (TDC) of the rails. This will allow the road wheels (top) and the guide wheels (side) to roll smoothly across the rails without contacting the screw heads.
    OKAY - That's the deets, peeps!

    This is really cool! One day in the future I would love to do something like this. Approximately how much would track cost overall (supports and the rails themselves) per unit of measurement? Surely it can't be too cheap. But it looks amazing anyway!

    pvc sch40 comes in foam core and solid core, foam core is mainly for DWV drain waste and vent, solid core is for pressure water line, there is a big difference in strength between the two.

    I guess great minds think alike as your Milling the 2X4 for the Pipe was my first idea I thought of that to provide a bigger area for making the biggest gluing area as I thought some type of a epoxy or glue would help keep the track solid for many years although I’m not sure chemically what product would be safe on the PVC yet 3M 5200 comes to mind as it is a Tenacious bond for Wood and Fiberglass holding together in a marine enviorment both under and above the waterline on a boat I have things I glued on my boats that held for 35 years without fail and boat manufacturers use the same product to adhere the deck structures to the hulls permanently

    You said your gauge was 18 inch on center. 15 + (1-1/2) + (1-1/2) = 18. Center of the pipe would be 15 + (3/4) + (3/4) = 16-1/2. So, are you measuring your track gauge edge-to-edge or 'on center'?

    Hi Will, great video. I have my pvc bent and ties cut but I'm struggling to scoop out the ends if the ties with rhe hole saw. What saw are you using and what RPMs on your drill press? My chuck keeps unseating I think bc of the uneven force on the saw cutting on the edge.
    Any tips would be greatly appreciated

    What spacing should I use between the ties? Thanks!

    • @WillPemble
      @WillPemble  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I usually ended up between 18 and 24 inches. The more stress on the track (hills, turns, etc.), the closer the ties should be.

    If it were me I would put screws in the bottom corner of the pipe as well. Seems like it might last longer. If I could afford it, I’d probably just make it out of metal like his metal coaster. Seems safer and more long lasting.

  • @b4ckbl4st
    @b4ckbl4st 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why wouldn't you use the grey 80 pipe? It's thicker and won't perish like the white does. So in my mind thicker = harder to bend but ultimately stronger and if the paint wears you don't need to be constantly re-painting.

    • @WillPemble
      @WillPemble  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I built a coaster with the Schedule 80 pipe once upon a time. What we found was that because it's gray, it absorbs more heat which makes the rails a bit softer in the sun. That, in turn, increases the friction between the wheels and the track, which makes the coaster go slower.
      NOTE: I have done exactly zero scientific testing of that. It just felt slower on the track, and the Schedule 80 pipe felt softer when I was working with it.
      And, Schedule 40 pipe is less expensive! But at the end of the day, I think it boils down to personal preference.

    So I wanna build a pvc coaster with an inversion. Will a pvc track be able to handle let's say a heatline role?

    • @gdhyp3rsqu1d59
      @gdhyp3rsqu1d59 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm assuming you mean heart line roll and the answer is possibly, it depends on how fast you will be going but you will also need to do the math on it otherwise you could put a lot of g force on the rider and it won't be fun to ride.

  • @Pensacola-Handyman

    How do you attached 2 pipes together without a union? Union causing a bump in the track.

    • @WillPemble
      @WillPemble  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put a smaller piece of pipe inside the two pipes as a connector. You can use a wooden dowel, or heat a piece of PVC pipe and then use PVC glue to connect them.
      Eventually, I decided to switch to steel track construction. Easier in many ways, and much stronger.
