  • Making a Backyard Roller Coaster with PVC is fun and easy! Here is a simple method for connecting lengths of PVC pipe together for a strong bond.
    I learned quite a lot from researching the website at pvcbendit.com. They make some amazing pvc bending tools and they know A LOT about PVC! And no, I wasn't paid to mention them. I'm just a fan!)

      Maybe a bit late, but heat up some sand in an oven then pour it into the pvc pipe. This method evenly heats the pvc so it uniformly bends and doesn't buckle or fold

    Oh, and a heat gun with a variable temp setting is cheap, and works great to get PVC pliable, and would probably keep your wife off your back about using her appliances lol All joking aside, however, are there any toxic fumes given off by PVC, CPVC or any of the other piping we often heat up? I have found sometimes I can notice faint odors, even when not setting it on fire. I have gotten into the habit of wearing a respirator face mask, cause who knows what's in those fumes!

    • @WillPemble
      @WillPemble  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Safe to say we're all in the habit of wearing face masks these days! (sorry. bad joke)
      But seriously. It's great advice to be careful about fumes. Ventilation is super important.
      With the heat gun, I found that getting the PVC consistently warm was a challenge.
      An oven for smaller pieces is great.
      For longer parts, you can fill the tube with hot sand. Heat sand in a 500º F oven, pour it inside the pipe, then shape the pipe however you like. The sand heats the pipe evenly and supports the inside of the pipe so you don't end up with flat spots on your track.
      There's also an awesome product called PVC Bend It, which does a brilliant job, especially for long pipes.
      pvcbendit.com. So definitely check that out.

    How does the roller coast bend and turn if wood can’t bend

  • @MatTheGameGuy
    @MatTheGameGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've had trouble keeping the PVC hot it cools down too fast to form it properly

    • @WillPemble
      @WillPemble  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely a balancing act. Get the tubing too hot and it collapses or deforms. Not hot enough and it's tough to bend. The first coaster I built with PVC, I didn't heat the pvc at all. I used (dangerous) straps and jigs to hold it in place. I wouldn't do it again that way. Using super hot sand poured inside the tube (also hazardous) is an option that keeps the tube from collapsing. But, you have to contend with heaps of super hot sand!
      All of the above is why I switched to steel for tracks :)
      The main thing, Pineapple, is safety. Please be careful, be sure you've got someone with you to help, go slow, and think through every move before you make it.
      Enjoy!

    Would it be a stronger join between rail and cross-tie if the screw was screwed flush against the inner wall of the pipe instead of to the outer edge of the pipe? Does the weight of the wheel rolling over the track not eventually cause the exposed screw inside the pipe to bend? I can’t tell without having it in my hands!

    What type of PVC should I use for a coaster, I was thinking of using 2" Sch. 40 PVC but I was wondering if I should use Sch. 80 instead because I want to have a max weight of 150 pound riders and G-Forces that max out around 3Gs. Also there will be ties around every 1 foot but in high G-force areas there will be more.

    Can u show us what motor you use for the lift hill and what chain type

    If you don’t now how to bend pvc u put sand where you want it to bend and the use a heat gun to make it soft
    Then u can angle ITV the way u want

    Thank you, I am looking to make a jet ski land launch, and am planning to use PVC for the rails to the water. I am thinking I may also install concrete and rebar inside each section, as it will be carrying a lot of weight @ ~800 lbs. and I want the rail system itsel to be extremely sturdy, as it will be subject to occasional high surf and hurricane force winds. My plan is to keep the height of the ski 'locker box', aligned with the height of my trailer. In the event I need to offload the ski from the rails, I can winch it forward, right on to the trailer. I plan to use a ATV winch to pull the ski back out of the water up the rails. It's a good rise from ther water line up into my yard, ~4, and adding the trailer height, another foot for five total. To minimize scratches to the jet ski underside, I am thinking I might be able to build a cradle for the ski to sit in. It slides on the rails, rather than the ski. I am thinking PVC there as well, but again, wondering about the crush rating on 3" pipe. Does anyone know how much inward force it takes to crush say schedule 40? I am thinking a jet ski would be no problem. they rate it for PSI burst pressure, can that be equated to reverse inward pressure? E.g. if it is 2200psi, does that mean it can withstand 2200 lbs of weight on the exterior, before crushing?

      I'm not sure I would try cost savings on these parts. Maybe a lot safer to try and save money on non-structural things like paint!

    • @WillPemble
      @WillPemble  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jake,
      My friend Paul Gregg (th-cam.com/users/psg20101) tells me that darker paints are better at blocking UV radiation. Paul is an experienced backyard roller coaster engineer and an aeronautical engineer with over 30 years of experience in materials science, etc. He referenced this article on the topic of paint as UV protection - th-cam.com/users/psg20101. You can also check out www.backyardrollercoasters.com where Paul offers two ebooks for sale. If you want to work around the UV issue entirely, the gray, schedule 80 PVC electrical conduit will do the trick nicely. More expensive, but you don't have to buy or apply paint :)
      Best,
      Will

    It's pointless to use the glue without primer.
    The primer actually allows the pvc to soften and become porous so that the glue can bind the two pieces.
